[Q] Some doubts with my gs2 - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello.
My brother just bought his new razr hd and gave me his galaxy s2. At least its much better than blackberry.
Im having some problems with it and I have some doubts.
thanks for your time
-I didnt ask my brother because he is travelling for his work.
1- Once rooted, always rooted? I saw somewhere that if I reflash the baseband I could lose the root. Is that true?
My brother rooted it with 4.0.3 with a bug that you dont even needed to plug the phone to the pc to root it. It had a brazilian firmware, then he flashed a trinidad tobago firmware and did the root. I want to reflash the modem and try new modems. Thats why im concerned about. Can I do it without any concerns?
My root does not have the yellow triangle on boot.
2- Then he installed CM9. Can I factory wipe it via CWM? Im afraid of that superbrick bug, but it now has CM9 kernel. Im safe, right?
It has the crazy chip. Checked with an app.
3- Are you guys also having problem with the new ROM manager version? 5.9.3.0? None functions that need root permissions work. If I uninstall to previous version, it works.
4- Why ROM manager it asks me to install a "new" 6.0.1.0 version when I have a 6.0.1.2 CWMR?
5- I did a factory reset via menu. It is the same as doing factory wipe on CWMR?
6- When he flashed CM9, the wifi roaming bug was fixed. But after I factory reset, it seems to stopped working. When I move between access points, the signal increases then it disconnects and reconnects...
Thanks.

Before I answer anything, please check this out:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1763193
Now then,
1. Root remains until u manually unroot it (by removing su binary and Superuser app), unroot using SuperSU app, or flash a stock firmware. Flashing a baseband (or modem) doesn't unroot your phone. But flashing an entire firmware does. Still, you can always root if you get unrooted!
2. Brickbug only affects stock 4.0.4 firmwares with stock kernel. CM9 should be safe to do a full wipe, since you're on a custom kernel. :good:
3 & 4. I suggest you stay away from ROM Manager as many members have reported problems while using it. Since u already have CWM, you don't need ROM Manager.
5. Factory reset via Settings and via Recovery ought to be the same. I prefer to do via CWM though.
6. I don't know about this as I haven't tried CM9 for a long time! Maybe you should check out the CM9 discussion thread to see if someone else has ur issue, and look for a possible fix for it.

[Q] Trouble upgrading from GB to ICS

Hello all XDA users,
Many apologies for the noobish questions, I am new to this forum and this is my first time posting. Although a first time smartphone owner, I decided to be brave and attempt to root and flash my phone, which worked fine under Gingerbread until I wanted to upgrade to ICS. I have a International GT-I9100 SGS2 purchased in Singapore. I rooted it by installing a custom kernel and flashed a new Lite'ning Rom V3.2 with Gingerbread.
In order to upgrade to ICS, I tried through KIES and the "Software Update" function to no avail. I then tried to do so manually but Odin would not complete the process with the original I9100XWLP3 rom I downloaded on this site. I left it running on my computer for 2 hours only to come back home with the progress incomplete.
My questions are:
1) I live in Taiwan now. My other friends who purchased their SGS2 locally here all have gotten ICS through KIES. Am I unable to do this because I purchased it from Singapore and must wait for the Singapore rom to be uploaded? Is there no way for me to flash to the local Taiwanese I9100ZSLPE rom?
2) How long does an ODIN flash take to complete? Should I be more patient and waited longer than 2 hours for it to finish?
3) Does KIES no longer recognize my phone because I rooted it? It always fails to download the driver whenever I plug in my phone. Do I need to unroot to an official ROM such as I9100XWLP3, and then download through KIES to get ICS, or is I9100XWLP3 already packed with ICS?
Again, many apologies if these questions are elementary in nature, and thanks in advance for the help. Attached you will find a picture of my phone's current firmware state.
[1) you must be on a stock rom as your friends had, since you have rooted and installed a custem rom, keis will not recognize your phone. you can flash it from ODIN also, if you really need official update from Kies, you want to flash the same stock ROM your friends had in their mobile at your region...
2) Maximum 5 minit, something wrong with your connection, it is strange finally you got installed after 2 hours waiting...
3) same answer as #1, + you dont need to unroot, mere rooting will not effect Keis update, XWLP3 is an ICS rom
Should I perform a full wipe before upgrading my rom?
Thanks for your response, all the way from Kuwait. I backed up most of my files via Titanium backup. Should I now perform a factory reset before upgrading to ICS? Wouldn't the factory reset also wipe out my Titanium backup, or is this somehow protected? Do I need to transport my backup to my pc first? I tried to backup via kies, but the driver issue prevented my phone from being recognized.

on which firmware are you currently?
it is always good idea to transport to PC your back-up, even wiping and factory reset will not touch your own stuffs on SD card, also while you are flashing a ROM from ODIN and CWM.
also take care when you restore your backup from tintanium, uncheck all the system data, it will mess up your phone, if you had made the backup from a GB Rom, install only user applications.
Your backed up data will be on the SD card a folder named Titanium backup, you only need to download the application titanium backup from market, after rooting your phone.
Edit : sorry I did not notice your picture uploaded, that means your attempt on ODIN did not do anythig and luckly it did not hurt phone too, I think your PC connection or driver is not proper....google more about usage of ODIN....

[Q] Bugs with 2.3.5 official firmware? How to reinstall?

Hi all,
Complete noob question warning, I've searched but not found the answer. I installed the latest official firmware from Samsung using Kies and it appeared to work but the phone is now buggy. It crashes to black screen and drops service, then reconnects to the network and scans the SD card again, and has done this mid call. Is there any way of rolling back or re-installing the firmware without rooting etc? Kies just says the latest firmware is installed.
Thanks
Neil
Odin is the program you need to Flash stock samsung roms, samfirmware is the place where you get them.
Look through the post tutorial on how to use Odin for ace in this very Forum, I don't know if there is a way of flashing the desired firmware with kies.
You don't need root to do it, but its recommended because flashing with Odin WILL WIPE YOUR STUFF, so having root and a backup with Titanium backup is very handy.
Pd: root it, I don't know anyone who's sorry after rooting.
You could go into recovery Mode.
Reboot and hold the middle button.
Then wipe data factory settings (It will deleted everything) Exept SD. and its like it was installed for the first time.

I9100 LPJ possible brick?.

Hello I am from Argentina, desperately need help.
I rooted my SGSII ICS 4.0.3 phone with CF Root LPJ everything went as expected. Odines PASS! and all but when my phone reboots it just turns off after logo screen with triangle.
I can get into recovery and download mode but that is all.
What should I do?
Might commit suicide if there is no fix.
Flash stock rom.
You can find it at sammobile.com.

If you can get into recovery and download mode, you are only softbricked. It could be worse.
Please be more precise, I lack experience but I will understand.
Which stock ROM should I flash now?
Because I got a downloaded I9100UHLPS_I9100AROLP4_ARO but it is not LPJ.
I also managed to find Kernel_I9100XXLPJ at intratech. Would flashing this kernel fix it? Could it possibly mess my recovery mode and brick my phone?
Flash the same ROM again using Odin, do not flash the wrong kernel.
ARO is a good ROM, just flash it again, it will boot, then root with the cfroot for that ROM later.
What do you mean by the SAME rom? I got this problem flashing a CF-Root kernel not an entire ROM.
The ROM I had before was ICS 4.0.3 which I upgraded officially via Kies.
Should I flash ICS 4.0.3 UHLPS that is for my region? I9100UHLPS_I9100AROLP4_ARO
I'm pretty sure that's what Atifsh meant, yes.
Thank you all! Thanks given with the button for all!!!
I flashed stock ICS 4.0.3 for my country downloaded from sammobile.com and the phone recovered with no trouble! I got my soft bricked SGSII working again!
Is there anything I need to wipe now to make sure there is no crazy leftover from the CF-Root boot fail?
If it's working fine, then probably not. I mean, you could always backup your contacts, call logs, SMS, etc and your apps with Titanium, do a factory reset, and then restore contacts, call logs, sms and user apps/data only (do not restore system apps or data).
But if it's working fine now, I don't see the point.
I want you to do two things for me tho.
First, get kTool either from Google Play (it's free) or from Hellcat's thread on here. Then backup your EFS. Keep one copy on your external SD card in your phone, and keep another copy on your PC. Then I want you to do a Nandroid backup in CWRecovery.
That way if anything does ever go wrong, you should be able to recover/get up and running again easily without losing your stuff. For example, if your phone ever borked & you had to send it in for warranty service/replacement, you could restore that backup when you get your phone back/a new phone.
Do a backup at least once a week and certainly every single time before you flash a new kernel/rom or if you make major changes to your system.
I am afraid of doing anything with this phone now. First experience = soft brick.
Damn I almost die. Now I need to find a way to get out of this stock 4.0.3 ICS because it is ramming through my battery and is as slow as a potatoe.
4.0.4 is eMMC hard-brick possibly if I wipe after flashing.
Now I feel like an expert.
I also tried flashing cf root today and it softbricked my phone. Weird.... next time I try to root my phone, I wont be using cf root.
Which Kernel was yours? Leave it here logged for future brickers.
Mine was LPJ

phone lags badly and other problems

Hello,
I installed a Anono ROM v17 and now my phone lags like there's no tomorrow. I've tried three other ROMs which work a little better but there's still noticeable lag. The worst part is that my connection keeps timing out now. Can I wipe it completely and return it to stock without losing root? Will that fix the lag problems?
My advice is you download the latest Odinable firmware, at the same time download Chainfire's Auto-Root. Flash the firmware first, go into stock recovery once it completely boots and wipe data/factory reset and afterwards flash auto root. Now you have a S3 with no lag and is rooted. (I hope)
Hit Thanks if I helped you!

Where can I find firmware which is compatible with Odin? Also I'm rooted already and not sure how to return my sg3 to stock. It's been a while since I last returned a phone to stock android.

[Q] Installing CM 10.2 (JB) over stock gingerbread

I really wanted to work this out myself but my time is very limited, I do not have access to a PC so don't want to risk bricking, and I've already spent many hours searching answers and downloading files. I need a working phone ASAP and it's not easy finding a spare in my current situation.
My phone died (battery) while active as hotspot. I replaced battery and now it won't detect ANY sim card (sim cards verified to work). Upon attempting to access mobile network settings: "Insert sim card to access network services".
Also, I'm not sure if it's related or not, but IMEI number is "unknown".
I'm really hoping it's a software/firmware corruption issue that I can fix.
I have tried the following:
Replacing sim
Fight mode
Restarting
Combinations of the above 3
Wiping SD card
Factory reset
Reflashing CF-root kernel via CWM (I think it worked but reboots before I can read log).
Now I want to try flashing a custom ROM. I have CWM installed and I was going to install CyanogenMod. I am aware of how to do this, but...
- I read that attempting to flash a JB ROM over a gingerbread kernel can cause an issue and that I may need to flash a JB kernel before installing cyanogenmod. Is this true? And if so, where can I find out what kernel to flash. I've seen lists, but I see all these numbers and names which don't really mean anything to me. Is there a stock JB kernel that would be suitable, or is any KB kernel fine?
- Does installing a custom ROM like CM not flash it's own custom kernel? Because I don't understand why having a gingerbread kernel should potentially cause issues.
- Is there anything that installing a custom ROM like CM doesn't flash (apart from bootloader)?
- Should I just flash a stable gingerbread CM ROM instead?
I appreciate any info
Cheers

I also flashed modem. Problem persists.

Flashing anything without a PC nearby is lunacy/asking for trouble. If something goes even slightly wrong, you won't be fixing it without one.

The problem is the unknown IMEI because the phone gets identified my this unique number. If its lost, SIM-Cards won't work. If you made an EFS Backup, it should be easy to recover the IMEI. But if you didn't...it will be nearly impossible.

I'd never heard of backing up the EFS before yesterday, so unfortunately I don't have one with IMEI. I think I have a nandroid backup at home somewhere, would this have a backup of the EFS/IMEI?
If I had it written down, would that allow recovery of EMEI?
Some roms bk up to efs folder so looking in to your sd card you may have one. Flash the nand if not it may restore it. May not though. Worth trying. Have you tried to flash gb firmware with odin as this has for some got it bk.

If I have a backup it will be on my PC or a HDD on the other side of the planet. But I will indeed look for it when I can. I'm fairly confident I would've done a full backup before I flashed a CF root kernel via Odin when I originally rooted the phone.
And no I haven't tried to flash gingerbread firmware via Odin. I don't have access to a PC. But I did flash the CF root kernel via CWM.
Your gonna need to look and hope your have mate or service center job. Local phone shop could prob do it to.

Fixed. Thanks stopro.
The phone was deteriorating. Apart from not detecting sim cards, it somehow lost su access. Even though I would allow access it would fail (issue with system/xbin/su). I couldn't even connect to WiFi anymore.
Flashed Dorimanx kernel 9.39
Flashed latest CM 10.2 nightly
Flashed GApps
Flashed modem
Wiped cache and Dalvik cache 2x each
Did a data wipe/factory reset
Booted
All working fine. IMEI number is displayed correctly. WiFi connected immediately (could not successfully obtain IP address before). I had to re unlock my phone to use a different carrier sim (I unlocked it before leaving Australia, but that flashing must've relocked it). Now it is connected to 3G with which I am posting this reply.
Not really digging this JB style, but hopefully I'll get used to it. Happy I've got phone all working properly though.
