My friend has this phone (I believe), and she lost all her contacts after a factory reset, due to the fact that the LG system by default adds contacts to the phone instead of her Google account. I know it's possible to choose where the contact is stored when you create a new contact, but it's terrible software design to force the user to remember that every time. Is there a way to make the Google account the default (or only) contact storage?
Or is the only solution to install a custom ROM? Thanks

I dont think you can BUT what you can do is make it as "google account" for each contact. So whenever she factory resets she can sync her account. :highfive:

Thanks. There's no address book or contacts app that will add all new contacts this way?

You cant solve it permanently from what i know, thats why they added the option to move contacts to sim, phone, google account etc..

Oh, is there an option to move all at once? That would be helpful. I don't know this phone very well.

Why can't you change the default for your contact that you create on the phone to default to a Google contact instead of the phone contact? Does anyone know how this can be changed? I rooted my phone and lost a couple contacts that I had put in the phone because phone contacts don't sync to the gmail account. Glad I at least found this out early so I don't have a huge problem when putting a different rom on it in the future.

that was a really annoying "feature" of the samsung fascinate. I guess the only way around it is to use the AOSP contacts program. I will attempt to restore it from titanium backup and see if it works
it usually sets it as gmail right out of the gate when i'm creating contacts, etc...i find myself checking every once in awhile now anyways. it is truly annoying!

A) language
B) It's a feature of sense, therefore htc, not vzw, is to blame.
however, yes, annoying. One solution would be to export contracts to SD from phone, import from SD to google.
(you would have to keep doing this, but it's a good way to back up before wipe/flash.)

I did the same thing. I went into gmail and organized/updated all my contacts. So now all my phone contacts are Google contacts. Be sure to go into gmail and do a perge/merge of any duplicates. This makes porting contacts over that much easier.
What really annoyed me was the linking/suggested linking of contacts on the phone vs google vs facebook. After you centralize everything around your google contacts things become much easier.
To set contact default to Google go into you contact list then press menu and choose view next uncheck the box that says "phone" and now your default is Google

I think if you create the new contact in your google account (vs on the phone) then it will sync up and everything will be OK.
I have to get into my google account contacts and clean up some stuff, duplicates, etc., that seem to appear every now and then.

Thanks, this is one step closer to what I need. I have a couple GMail accounts on my phone one of which I use solely for work contacts and I use the option of selecting which GMail account I added the new contact to. Really missing this feature
Any word if the AOSP contact app works?

That just changes which contacts show. I am talking about entering a new contact and letting it be a Google contact by default. I don't want to accidentally set it up as a phone contact which will not sync to your Google account.

I gotta say Contact Management with Android has been probably one of my biggest frustrations. I like the ability to sync my GMail contacts, that's easy enough. But between getting pictures and "linking" "synching" and "attaching" contacts via Twitter, MS Exchange, and other means... TO not being able to only populate mobile numbers when creating SMS/MMS's and such, it is just way more difficult than it should be.
It could and SHOULD be much simpler. Maybe I'm just a wii-todd, idk.. Either way, I feel your pain dude.
Ya so was I.... Maybe since u have a mixture it isn't working for u.....Export all your contact to Google then remove ur Google account from the phone then delete all ur contacts off ur phone then sync with Google and do the steps I posted before

Try that,not working.
All contacts have the icon of google and the icon of the green with the phone inside.
That means uncheck the google contacts in the display option doesn un merge the contacts.
Any other idea to un merge?
Thanks,
It shouldn't show any google contacts if you uncheck everything under google settings.

You could alway export all the contacts. Then import the contacts. Don't allow Android to the merge. Delete the ones you don't want. Finally sync the gmail account.

Why would you not want to store your contacts on google? Easy to sync from phone to phone, backed up and easy to edit/add/delete online as well as on handset.
1) I just don't like it.
2) It's synchronize with more than one account.
3) I think this is my privilege to choose.

Maybe disabling automatic syncing in "Accounts and sync" could help.
Hello,
My mom currently owns this phone and she was experiencing lag with the phone and the rep told her to do a factory reset. of course, she lost all of her contacts now they cant figure out how to get them back.
Is there a way that I could recover her contacts only after the phone has been through a factory reset?
Thanks in advance.
I assume This Was a non rooted Phone with stock, So unless u synced it to Google or make a backup manually... I Dont think u can recover :-\

just sync using google account and all contacts will be restored. :good:
It's fairly obvious the phone contacts weren't synced to Google in the first place, so there's nothing to sync back from Google
OP - Time to get her in the habit of syncing contacts to/from Google everyday now this has happened to prevent a recurrence.

if she had setup a google account (which she could have), the contacts were synced. And there is no issue with a try or is there one ? Cheers.
I really screwed up this time... Normally I'm pretty good with backing up and preventing this kinda stuff but this one slipped through my fingers. I did a factory reset of my Samsung S3 (US Cellular) and formatted it on my PC via USB. I assumed all my contacts had been saved through my gmail account, but apparently they were not.
#1. Is there any way I can possibly retrieve some of my lost contacts? One number in particular is extremely important.
#2. If they weren't being saved to my Gmail account (some did, some didn't), where did they save to?

Give a thank if i helped you.
I'm supposed to 'sync' every time I want a number to be saved? I've had this number in my phone for months and months.
If your contacts haven't been saved in GMail account then see if your Sim Card has them. When you save a contact, you can choose to save it in your phone's memory or Sim Card. To see if your Sik Card has your contacts saved, Go to Contacts, press Home button and tap Import and hen choose import from Sim Card.

Normally, and if you activated the sync, it should sync once you created the contact and you got an internet connection. If this did not happen, and you already formatted anything and don't have any nandroid backup or Titanium Backup of the contacts files, I fear there is no way to get those contacts not synced back.
Did you check the contacts in Gmail on web? The phone saves to Google account based on preferences settings.

Yes.
Check with your Service Provider, and demand a print of calls or sms messages sent from your number in a specific time frame, that way you'll 100% get the number. But this method is not free, they will charge you for it. Good luck.

Hi All,
I have a brand new LG P714 phone.
1) How to remove phonebook sources
I now import contacts from the Sim card, phone itself, and gmail.
I want to extract contacts ONLY from gmail.
How can I do it?
2)
I want to remove the gmail account I am using from the phone, and associate it with a new one.
How can I remove an account (How to add is plain and simple but we cannot figure out how to remove)
BTW:
I don't want to root this phone.
Hey there,
1. I guess you use the stock dialer. If so, when on the contacts tab, go to settings and select customize. There you can choose the sources to display, and you can leave gmail only.
2. Removing accounts can be achieved by going to phones settings, then accounts and then removing the required account, google here. However, as the google account is so fundamental in Android, removing it is usually not easy (as many things rely on it). Maybe the only way is to go back to manufacturer's settings.
HTH.
