Hard to answer without knowing what ROM you're on. Go in to Settings, About Tablet. If you're thinking of a new tablet, I might suggest the new Nexus 7.

If you like (or don't mind) the larger 9' form factor, the gorgeous HD+ at $149 is a truly great bargain.
With access to the Google store there is practically little if any benefit to rooting (i.e., running rooted stock ROM).
However, custom ROMs (e.g., CM10.x) provides features that stock ROM does not have, e.g., nifty GUI, USB Host Mode, etc.

I can get a Nook Color or Kindle Fire for christmas. But I can't decide which one to get! The fact that the kindle fire doesn't have a mirco sd card slot really bothers me. But once usb host is figured out this will no longer be a problem. I like that the Nook Color is alot father along in the terms of hacking and it has a mirco sd card slot. But the fire has a faster processor and its dual core. The fire will be able to run ics and idk if the nook color will be able to. Ugh! I can't decide. Please help me!
P.S. I plan on using this as a tablet, not as an ebook reader.

Both of them have ICS roms (in development). Here's a comparison: http://www.tabletmoz.com/tablets/kindle-fire/a-comparison-between-kindle-fire-vs-nook-color.html. You can see that the Kindle Fire is more suitable for the use as a "tablet" compared to the nook color.
If Nook Tablet was an option (it is not due to signed bootloader) then it would be a tough call. But Fire vs NC is easy: get the Fire.

I've made my decision! I will get the fire based on joeuser846's recommendation and and theonew's helpful article and recommendation. I realized that I can use dropbox to get around the micro sd card issue. I read that the 6.2.1 update breaks root. Will I still be able to install the android market without root? My sister has 6 months of amazon prime free then I was planing on installing cyanogenmod 7/9 on it. Do I need root to install these roms too?

All official updates break (remove) root. Instead, you could get the pre-rooted update here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1402440 so you don't have to worry . Yes, you have to have a custom recovery (usually requiring root to be able to install it).
fire or nooky???
Dude if your gonna use it as a tab, why not just get a tablet...if it is size and the $200-$250 pricetag, than go with the 7" iconia A100 by acer. I just got one from best buy for $249 and I love it, and I think you can still get $100 off(the tablet, in store) if you sign up for a wifi hotspot through ver., at&t or sprint we went with sprint.
-downfall= not much development yet, but full android market and honeycomb 3.2 out the box
It is incredibly easy to strip the DRM off books purchased at the Kindle Store. You should check to see how easy it is to strip DRM from nook books, if you plan on purchasing books form them.
Stripping DRM
As a total beginner, can you tell me how?

I think this all depends on your needs, what you want to use it for?
Anyways, this "Kindle Fire VS Nook Tablet-Specs comparison" what listed as a chart in Aneesoft could take a read, might give you some ideas.

hello to all apologize if posting this in the wrong place, and sorry for my english google translator.
I am very close to buying a touchpad but I'm unsure whether to buy it or kindlefire, even if you think a player no longer manufactured there will still be many hacks, and developing roms for it?
ICS will be possible on the touchpad, there are many people developing for it?
I thank all
Well this can do all a kindle but kindle can't do all this can. While we have some issues with drivers, over time it will be fixed and yes, will have ics. Kindle can't have WEBOS now...

The kindle is garbage. If you want to see the wonders of the Touchpad, check out my videos:
http://www.youtube.com/user/reverendkjr?feature=mhee
The Touchpad is definitely better hardware wise. You are getting a 9.7" screen (same size as the ipad) instead of only a 7" one. You also get a full GB of RAM on the Touchpad instead of only 512MB. My phone has the same CPU and GPU that the Kindle Fire does and on GTA 3 there is some lagging. On my Touchpad with CM7 the game is smooth.
ok thank you all, I'm convinced to buy the touchpad, but only one question to those who already have it, all games and applications to run on android Cyanogen mod? there are still some compatibility issues.
And it is possible for easy installation of the dual bot WEB OS and android I liked the interface of the Web OS, did not want to be without him, and he accepts some sort of memory card? these are still my doubts

The only way to install android is dual boot with webOS. You cannot remove webOS.
The TouchPad has no expansion slot. You can use a USB flash drive with a janky set up using a USB on the go adapter, USB y splitter, and USB power source. So, basically you are stuck with what ever version you get, 16gb or 32gb.
I greatly prefer webOS, so I don't spend much time in android ... Until there is a tablet version of android available. I have not had any compatibility issues with the few apps I have installed.

as long as your fairly tech savvy, i would go with the TP. The only thing that would worry me if i were you, is the tutorials are all written in english so that may make things tougher. o ya, and good luck finding one unless your looking for a used (and maybe overpriced) touchpad.

I have read and understood the tutorials I've done some installations of Cyanogen on other devices, then I am completely noob, and my reading of good English and have a greater problem with writing.
I'm buying it right now, here I pay 800 reais to 425 dolares worth in the 32GB version, I know it is expensive compared to prices here in Brazil over U.S. prices are still absurd tablets.

Couldn't agree with you more. I own two regular e-Ink Kindles.
They are very enjoyable to use for what they're designed for: reading
books.
Out of curiosity, I pre-ordered the Kindle Fire. When it arrived, I was
very hopeful. Unfortunately, it turned out to be a piece of *******(sorry)
It's just not ready for prime time.
I currently have XRON's Android on my Touchpad and I am extremely
happy with it. (until ICS comes along, of course )
Read Leo's thread it has all you need to know. I never flashed a Rom before and have been using his for a month with great results. Just follow the instructions.

there is some evolution in Cyanogen 9 for the touchpad?
Hi, i want to buy the new nook tablet but i have some doubts....
1)first of all in italy i can't use the store of barnes & noble and , if i'm not wrong, i can't use the wi-fi ..... so the os is "blocked".
With the root could i use more functions like google market, some google apps, load my documents, musics or films?
2)I know that for the nook color was realeased the CM rom and i also know that nook tablet is a recent tablet... in your opinion will developers focus their attention on this tablet with some stable rom?
I would wait to see if the bootloader is hacked for the tablet. give it a month and if its not hacked go with the nook color, or something else.
you can't use wifi? why not?
I'm italian and I have purchased a nook tablet with the hope that the bootloader will be unlocked. For the moment I've rooted the device and installed the android market and some other apps. The wifi works normally.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA App
Thank you for the help now i can only hope that it will be hacked, otherwise I'll buy color or a kindle fire
If you're willing to spend $100 more, consider the Samsung Galaxy Tab 7+ (Bestbuy US.) I'm in Canada and I picked up the NT when down in the States, kind of regretting it now, especially since I left the receipt at the hotel. For $100 you get a camera, full android, with ICS coming etc.
yes, galaxy tab is one of the best tablet.. but i don't know if i want to spend about 350$ ( in italy about 490 €). if there isn't a solution for the bootloader problem, i think that i will buy the kindle fire or the nook color.
The problem is that nook color have a "slow" processor and the kindle fire have only 8GB of memory(6GB for files app ecc).
EDIT: an other small question: if the root give the chance to install the market, the google apps, to load musics, documents, films, use all the 16 GB and not only 1GB, why we have to hack the boot loader? sorry for this question but i'm a newbie
sorry for the reply, can someone answer to my last question pls?
The reason we want an unlocked bootloader is so that we can install roms based on HC and ICS. but we cant work on roms becuase the bootloader is locked which means the kerenel cant be changed to anything newer then then gingerbread kernel.
hey there, as the title says, I'm interested in the nook tablet.
I have a nook simple touch, rooted, but want to be able to get a bit more of a true tablet experience.
1) hows battery life? I mostly intend to actually read, view pdfs, some online browsing, and note taking. essentially, does the nook tablet battery do well w a lot of usage?
2) how is cm7 or ics coming along? do these improve battery at all, or hurt it from stock?
3) why did you chose your nook tablet over what options you were considering?
4) is there an "updated" model coming soon that might replace the tablet?
thanks guys!

1.) Battery life is pretty good for the most part. It should treat you really well for what you intend to use it for. Keep in mind that the biggest killers of battery life are the display and WiFi.
2.) Check out the Development subforum and threads with [ROM] in the title. CM7 is further along than CM9 and has an internal version and one to run from SD card. I think the general consensus is that battery life is nearly the same between CM7 and stock.
3.) I guess the big rival to the NT is the Kindle Fire. But the NT offers double the RAM as the Kindle Fire and also has a microSD slot, allowing you to multiply the amount of storage. Not much of a contest if you ask me. This device has a lot of potential for its value.
4.) Not that I've heard. In fact, I've heard that Barnes and Noble wasn't doing quite as well with sales as they thought, so I'm not sure where the NOOK product line will go from here.
Good news, maybe they are forced to unlock the bootloader eventually.
Lesson learned.
While the NT is a great device, there is a rumored nexus tablet that is supposed to compete with the KF price (and thus the NT) coming this summer.

I'm still pretty salty about this. I was looking forward to the MeMo 370T, and I find it unlikely that Asus would release two tablets like this around the same time.
Meh, I'm pretty sure we'll see a 7" Nexus Tablet with specs that are at the very least comparable to the NT, if not better.
The key part though, will be that it won't be horribly locked down and it'll come with unfucked ICS.
The only potential downside will be a lack of an SD card; Google has shown with the Galaxy Nexus that they really don't want to progress with external sd cards and they do have quite a few of their own services (videos, books) thus they may want to limit local storage ala Kindle Fire.

Memo has been officially canceled by Asus, it was shown at CES and they canceled it shortly after, presumably due to not wanting to release two tablet (memo and nextab) of the same price range around the same time.

I don't believe this was ever confirmed though.
An "insider" source if I remember right though.
Rumors were though that Asus was pairing up with Google for the Nexus tablet so I think its a reasonable conclusion that they wouldn't want to put two nigh identical tablets out on the market like that.
So I have an almost fully functional version of Google Now running on my Xperia Arc running ICS. I am running CM9 off an SD card on an otherwise unmodded 16GB model. I'm wondering if I can install Google Now and have it run on the Nook?
By the way, is anyone else mad at Google for releasing a piece of hardware that's too good too be true at that great a price, so shortly after paying for a Nook?
1) This is not a development thread.
2) it did not work for me, though it did work on my Fascinate
3) That's about the pace of things - the Nook is over six months old now.

The Nook will be coming up on a year this fall but thats irrelevant I suppose. You can't really be mad at Google for releasing a competitive product.
The Nook also has something the Nexus 7 doesn't: expandable memory.

Why are they making Android devices without expandable memory?
This is one of the main reasons I don't like Apple products and do not buy them.
Expandable memory and being able to change the battery on the fly.
The Kindle Fire is really nice but sadly only 8gb and no external.

More specifically, Play Store Media.
Amazon saw some great success with the Kindle Fire despite limited local storage while offering videos/books/etc via their store.
B&N tried to lock down the Nook's local storage to 1GB for the user to use, with the remainder being reserved for official B&N content. That didn't go over so well.
Google is simply joining the game.
