I am trying to get rid of the ota update notification on my nexus 10. It wants me to update to but I am rooted and do not want to lose my root. I have searched and searched and searched trying to find the answer to this but have not been able to. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Use OTA rootkeeper and then just update? If it's 4.3 you'll have to update to the new root service method, end of the day, it's a nexus, stop worrying about root because there isn't a nexus yet that isn't rootable on any software version.

Well I read that rootkeeper does not currently work with 4.3. I am fine with either getting rid of the notification or updating and keeping root but either way I have to keep root one way or another because I use root permissions on a daily basis to write to my external hard drive. If rootkeeper works with 4.3 then I would be happy to update and use that to stay rooted. As far as "updating root service method", what does this mean and what needs to be done to perform this? Thanks for your reply buddy!

No problem, basically,4.3 requires a service to run that will mediate superuser requests. It is neither here nor there to you as a user, do a quick search around for 4.3 root by Chainfire, it installs pretty much the same as any other root, but it uniquely addresses issues in 4.3 (new security).
I'd link you but I'm on my phone so easier to search on tablet or desktop.
It's really easy and I did it myself on my own nexus 10 soon as 4.3 came out.
FYI, complications such as those in 4.3 aside, it's always possible to root a device where flashing a custom built kernel is possible. In other words, unless the OS breaks the standard su/native/dalvik communication (kinda like 4.3 does) it will always, always, be possible to root a nexus device.
4.3 just makes it slightly more complicated because it disallows setuid (which allows recounting system read/write) from dalvik (android) apps. Fortunately, I assume, the workaround takes care of it by having a native "service" (that does have permission) take care of that part for us (the latter part is an educated guess).

Does this include write permissions? I download a lot of media on my N10 and then transfer it to my hard drive for safe keeping.

Is there any site or source on the web that provides downloads of old versions of Android Market apps? This would be for apps that are now updated or no longer available on the Market? I am looking for a site similar to "OldVersion.com" which has some old/classic PC software (but this would be something for android apps instead)?

CustomShortcut gone?
The app that I am looking for in the above post was a free one called CustomShortcut APK. I now have it on one of my two phones (the other phone had it but was lost and replaced). I have tried looking for a developer page for this app but no luck as everything seems to point back to android market as the source link for download.
Does anyone know of a way or source for me to get this APK back on my other phone? Is there a way to copy it from one phone to the other? I am assuming that it was removed from the market because it may not be compatible with ICS but I am not running ICS. The application was made by appli.club.
Are you rooted? If so use root explorer to look for the .apk in the /system/app folder and copy or email it to the other phone and install it.

No sadly I am not rooted. Is that how this could be done? I have an HTC phone (Sensation) and I like my "sense" gui. Don't want to wipe it out by rooting (that is what would happen, right?) If access to the apk is possible with rooting, then I guess my question would be, does anyone else here have CustomCut on their rooted phone? (Or possibly know of any website that would have those apk's available for download). I would be willing to pay if someone would take the time to send me a replacement copy.

Rooting will not wipe out your phone or change it other than giving you super user privileges. That way you will have access to get to the system apps folder.
I notice apktop keeps old versions around. But part of the reason I like Titanium backup is because I have a fail safe if a new update to an app is bad, as I can just restore from the last backup the older version.

Well I am not really too concerned about it wiping out my phone, but I thought I had read many posts here talking about once you root your phone the native skin from the manufacturer is eliminated (for HTC that would be the "Sense" user interface). Can you please confirm? Is this not true? HTC Sense will remain exactly the same after rooting my phone?
The other thing that has made me cautious is that my phone runs perfectly now and I see so many threads on the xda boards here and over at various android forums that start off with "My ____ app is not working right since I rooted...." Just a little daunting for a newbie like myself.

Thanks very much for the site suggestion. I have been trying to search for the CustomShortcut APK over there but no luck ...so far (the site search is not that easy to use). I have even tried to seach the site externally using google but, unfortunately, still no luck.
Wait for someone else to confirm on the htc, but nothing changed on my droidx. I just had superuser privs. All of the "this app quit working" is when people flash custom roms. You don't do that when you just root. But you have to be rooted in order to do things like that. Lol.
Rooting gives you the power to do that if you want to.
When I rooted my droidx, I did it just so I could have the power to do other things if I wanted. I am still on factory rom. But I am able to get to parts of the phone that are off limits if I wasnt rooted. I made it where I could tether, later I got rid of bloatware, etc.

Thanks once again for the reply. Now that you mention it, I remember reading the terminology "flashed" rom and thought they were similar or the same thing as rooting. One other question, once a phone is in a rooted state, if I was to go in and copy the APK for my replacement phone and put it on there could I then "unroot" lol ...sorry if this is not a word... so that my phone was no longer open? I had read somewhere (perhaps I heard it on a TWIT or Android podcast) that when your phone is in root state that anyone (ie: potentially bad software) has easier access to your phone's vunerable areas.

yes you can unroot. As for easy access after you are rooted to vulnerable areas, they can only get access if you let them. If an app wants super user privileges, you will get a pop up from su(the super user apk) telling you that some app is wanting privileges. You can grant or deny access. The only things on my phone that have ever given me a pop up are things that i downloaded and know need su access. Wifi tether, root explorer, adfree, etc.
I have found a site that keeps older version of an android app. It's called Android Drawer.

As crazy as this sounds, is there an SD card image that is bootable similar to CM7 that isn't rooted? I want to use my Nook as a tablet for work but the IT department has an application that verifies that the device isn't rooted before you can get corporate mail. If there isn't an image, does anyone know if there is a way to reset the status on the Nook so that it doesn't show that it's been rooted?
Since I've started using my Nook booted off of the card I can't think of more than a couple times that I've needed root access. And each of those times I could just as easily moved to a different load/card. Being able to power down and swap cards is pretty snazzy. I received my nook as a holiday gift and I've loved running it off the card. I haven't loaded CM7 or anything else into internal memory because I like having the ability to revert back to B&N build if I need to.
My current setup is a Nook Tablet 16Gb running CM7 from SD card.
Mod version CyanogenMod-7.2.0-RC0-acclaim-Team-B
Android version: 2.3.7

Well you could always just boot into your internal ROM and use that at work. The root access you have only is available on your SD ROM so there's no real way for them to tell if you've ever had root access.
Although I don't know how they check in the first place, so that might be a little out of place for me to say.

Solar.Plexus: regrettably that is the crux of the issue. The company uses an app that is on the Google Play store for checking the device and the B&N internal rom doesn't have access to that. The card has access to the Play store but is rooted. It's like a rock and a hard place.

Oh, I understand now. You need access to Google Play, but you can't have root.
I don't know if you can unroot a CyanogenMod ROM or not. Haha honestly, this is the only time I've ever seen this requested. Maybe if you remove some binaries and SuperUser completely, but I'm not so sure.

I'd just like to provide some info on how this all works.
So the stock OS on the Nook is like most Android devices in that the end user does not have "root access." We have a few tools to allow users to gain root access on the stock OS.
Now, we also have a handful of custom versions of Android (roms). They all, as far as I know, come with root access. This means that upon installing them, whether to internal or booting from an sdcard, you will have root access, i.e. full access to the rom's file system. Developers could, if they so chose, create roms that did not have root access. In fact, back in March, the official CM team added the options in developer options, allowing users to disable root altogether, enable it for Android Debug Bridge mode (ADB) only, enable it for apps only or enable it for both (though I think this is only for CM9 and beyond).
Essentially the OP was asking for a way to have a custom rom (CM7) without root access. The app I suggested disables root access and allows you to toggle it back on when you need it. Its fantastic for stock versions. As many have found out, taking official updates usually removes root access. Voodoo Rootkeeper allows your device to preserve the apps/exploit essential for root access and to restore it when you need it.

I know from bitter experience that SkyGo (UK) doesn't work on a rooted or jailbroken phone (something to do with counters) but has anyone here found a way round this? I realize that the official release for this is November, but the principle of whether rooting can be detected is the same.

I used to temp unroot when using sky go and restore root afterwards. All this can be done without a reboot.
Use hidemyroot or voodoo ota rootkeeper to make a copy of the su binary, unroot device, uninstall superuser app, force close sky go if its running and then reopen.
I wonder if you could used the multi user function of 4.2.2 to run sky go under another user

Why go through so much trouble?
I have this problem with an app from my cable provider which enables me to watch live tv on my tablet, it also fails when it detects root.
The only thing I need to do is open the SuperSU app and disable root, it's as easy as that for me.
Maybe this also works for you?

No, that would also be to much trouble for me, I like things simple.
Just open the SuperSU app, go to settings -> Enable superuser -> uncheck the box besides it.
It disables root access.
Works like a charm for me but I don't use the Sky app, I use another app provided by my cable operator/isp which also checks for root.

Unfortunately it didn't work. Sky really are on the ball when it comes to securing this app.
Looks like I'll have to try the only other thing I can think to make it work, flash back to a stock image using clockwork mod.

Check out the general section, you will find the anwser you seek. if you have any other questions there is also a search abilility..there are only about a half a dozen threads titled with the same or basically the same as yours...thanks for visiting and I hope you find all the information you need. Previous owner must unregister. the tablet from their account before u received it.and I would attempt to register it and setup your account before cash exchanges hands or contact amazon with id to verify that it has not been blackliisted already, it can either be unregistered by owner from tab then reset . Or done through ther online account..

I haven't taken my Fire out of the box yet. There seems to be discussion that if I haven't downloaded an OTA yet, I can root in a way others can't because the new updates block it?
Is there a known "best" ROM someone can point us to?
Why do I keep seeing everyone say 'don't ever turn on wifi!'? I assume that is just to not get the OTA update at the beginning. But once rooted, obv we can use wifi right?
Is every root method dependant on creating a separate partition for the new ROM, and whenever we use the Kindle we have to choose to use the stock amazon rom or the new ROM we've flashed?

Well "root"has nothing to do with seperate partitions n such. root is all permission control over system.
The only way to flash anything currently is being on older os rooting,then installing safestrap which will set up alternate system and data boot path allowing you to flash a ROM separately from your factory os ,as to not disturb it. Because currently we do not have stable working fastboot for this device. As for BEST rom. In any situation is totally in one own experience and opinions. Currently there isn't any selection if u look in development section the only two that function only work on old firmware ...you can roll back to that firmware ..but also bootloader is locked tight thus the need for a "safe" type of recovery as of moment only works on older firmware also. Just.within the last couple of days have reveiled a couple of rooting options for lastest firmware so ...this tab per Amazon gives no warning nor asks permission to upgrade of firmware which unrooted a ton of people last few months...soooo no root no development....now we have root again we will get going again..Have fun and most of all be PATIENT and do not ask for ETA remember all the developers here are doing that on there FreeTime and free of pay most the time. AS FAR as rooting and adding gapps to newest firmware I heard that it has been achieved with HDXPOSED found in development and permission module . Then sideload gapps... As far as adverse effects... Like I said you will have to be patient if you want somebody else to find out bugs for you.. still to new .....due to new root releases..like last three days.

As far as I know gapps aside from gmail will not work without root and HDXposed..(fixes permissions)and as far as doing any mods to stock slot it is not advised because of very difficult if even possible recovery due to no fastboot capabilities. Check for bugs for any mods in associated threads. As far as flashing anything ,again I am not sure safestrap is functioning on latest firmware .. And there hasn't been enough time for any development because of the recent rooting capabilities.
Alright, so it sounds like this is what I should do then:
Get tablet
Root it (If I can't, then I stop here)
Install safestrap
Backup
Install the backup on romslot 1??
Make the modifications I want to romslot 1
Is that right?
Also let's assume I can't root it, I can still sideload most apps I want like Gmail, Youtube, etc? (Those aren't on the amazon app store correct?)

Yeah I would say you just about got the idea .... If it is a brand-new unit you have a possibility that it will be on the old firmware still ... That is why they need to bypass activation skip set up . And check firmware before you hook it to any active Wi-Fi service .. And even if it does or is already updated there is now root available for the latest firmware ... It's just a question whether or not we can get anything else to work along with the latest firmware ... I would be advised if you attempt to run the OTA blocker which comes in the HDX utility you may have Wi-Fi glitches and reboots .... But like I said those bugs need to be checked for and follow through and repaired in their associated threads ... Not a new thread that only plugs up our forums but puts the helpful threads on the next page where cannot find them ... Remember there are multiple pages each forum section and some of the helpful threads have been buried on the next page due to people starting new threads with the same questions or problem... That have been resolved already... Remember reading is more informative than typing . I suggest we contact any of the forum members who are advanced in these matters to assist us with the root for Overdyve.

I'm going to try to dive in and see if I can figure out rooting my Overdryve. Since they don't seem to sell too many of these, I think we'll have to figure out how to do this without a nifty app. If anyone has any thoughts/pointers/useful articles, perhaps they'd share them.

I agree with you 100%. We really need to stick together on this and help each other out noting that these devices are very few. In the event we are unable to root the device is there any other way of enabling Google Play Services without requiring root? If I can get support for the Google services I will be good to go. Currently most of Google apps are not supported. Thankfully Google Maps works as I absolutely needed this to work as the Rand navigation software is not located in my country. I bought this to use away from USA and so far the most disappointing issue is that Rand disabled support for Google apps.
I will read widely and support you where I can.
I bought the Overdryve 7 a few days ago and there is literally NOTHING out there to help Root it, install a custom recovery, or how to install Google Play Services. I have tried rooting it with KingoRoot and King Root but to no avail. I haven't resorted to such generic methods to root anything since Towel root. This is why TWRP is essential to have.

I have the Overdryve 7, and 8 Pro... hoping that someone out there much smarter than I has been working on this. Eager to make these thing earn their cost back.

download dr.fone and you can root i did on mine it works if not first time keep doing it will root overdryve 7 or 8
overdryve 8 pro, been rooted for a while now, but Id like to get the OTA updates that ive missed over the last year, and i keep hitting a snag on the OTA verifier...
/system/bin/install-recovery.sh has ben modified... sha1 doesnt match...
there was another file too, but when I rooted, SU made a backup of the other file so i just switched it and it passed SHA1 check.... but SU didnt take a copy of this file for back up...
any ideas? ive tried changing it to a .bak but then fails becuase file is missing....
anyone have a stock 8 pro, unrooted ever, that they can turn on just USB debugging and try to copy the file original file out for me thru ADB debug if possible?
Or anyone know the ile contents for that file on Android 5.1.1 build LMY49I/N8_1_0_170516_275
I wanted up load more detailed specs.... I also have the new OTA update zip, like I said it just goes too error tho because the install-recovery.sh file sha1 doesn't match because I have rooted, and SU remove root and factory reset do not return the original file

Has anyone figured out how to install Google play services and play store. I got as far as getting an early version of Google store to work without crashing but now it says it can't connect to the Google servers. Oh well something's gotta work.

Anyone able too get into Fastboot on this?
I can see the option and select it from the Engineering Menu, but the decice just sits on the RM logo then reboots normally.
There must be a key combo like too enter the Recovery Menu, but I cant figure it out.
