I just got the HTC one yesterday. I'm coming from a galaxy note 2. I not the unlimited data plan that I believe come with 500 mb tethering. But clearly I don't want to spend an extra 15 a month for only 2 gb. Is there an app or a hack that will allow me to tether/use the one as a hotspot like the galaxy note?

If you're already rooted, you can use the WiFi tentering app by CWM on the play store ( yellow WiFi icon). Just change the device profile to wlan0 and check the this option after the MAC spoofing section( can't remember the name right now haha.

i THINK i did that already. not exactly sure what that last step meant lol. but i am rooted, and have treve mod on it. and have all the settings in it set. though when i use it as a hotspot, the data shows up under the tethering section on the tmobile account app. the only way ive found around it is using vpn shield. then the data isnt collected. BUT the problem with that is that it knocks down speeds considerably
What version of android do you have? I got it to work on 4.2.2 with the newest version of wifi tether for root users that has the option to not send tether command and I got it to work without enabling native tethering on the system.

I'm in the same boat as you with an unlimited data plan but I'm getting blocked for tethering. On my HTC One S there was a file I used to flash in TWRP that unlocked the APNs using the stock ROM when rooted. . But I have not found anything like that for the One yet.
I have read of some people using SQLite to edit the phones carrier list on other phones. But I'm not a developer and I don't know if that would work on this phone or not.
Just throwing an idea out there since the thread is here.

I got the stock hotspot app to work again. I had to go ahead and unlock my bootloader at HTCDev, flash TWRP recovery, flash a custom ROM (which I did NOT want to do), and add a different APN to get it to work again. I flashed the Revolutionary ROM, which is pretty close to a stock M7 ROM with a few minor tweaks. Has the same stock feel. Even on this ROM, the fast.t-mobile.com APN will block tethering and give you the page to add it to your plan. But if you add the old epc.tmobile.com APN, it will save and not switch back to the fast.t-mobile APN. Also, the APNs are not locked, you can delete it if you want.
I'm just testing out this ROM right now to see if I can get the same kind of battery life I get with the stock ROM. This is the main concern for me. The stock ROM got me 3 days of use out of the device. That's unheard of on any Android device I've ever used. If I have to spend weeks working out bugs and flashing different kernels, I'm going to run the RUU and return my device back to stock and continue searching for a way to modify my stock ROM or just give up and use one of those clunky slow apps in the market place.
But basically, you just need to find a way to unlock the APNs and you can get wifi tethering/hotspot to work natively.
Did anyone get Wifi Tether to work with 4.3 ROM? It did not for me. I am s-off.

Doesn't work for me either. It did with 4.2.2. I get an error when I try to close the Wifi Tether connection saying my phone is currently in an unknown state and prompts me to reboot.
Not sure how to solve this...

I see a lot of debate over how to tether. Can anyone please tell me the tried and true method to tether on LTE without being detected/billed by AT&T?
Thanks in advance.
I am not a pro whatsoever here, but it is my understanding that once you are rooted, if you freeze or uninstall tethermanager using Titanium Backup you should not have to do anything else, and it should work.
You can insinstall or freeze tethering manager, but no matter what you do they can still detect you if they look for it. I have never ran the stock rom on my infuse, and always had tethering manager uninstalled, and they still sent me the text message warning to stop or upgrade to a tethering compatible data plan.
I think they figured out that people were deleting tethering manager, so they now check by different means, from my understanding they check the packets of data being sent and received or something to that effect. A phone will send and receive different packets than a tethered laptop.
It will work for a while, but they may eventually warn you that you've been caught. I would say go ahead and do it until they warn you. That's what I did. And I suggest not using it for huge amounts of data, like a replacement for your home internet. I think I was caught because I used my phone to tether a few laptops and a ps3 to watch Netflix for a couple of days when my internet went down at home and my roomies still wanted to use internet.

Change your APN don't use their Proxy and you will be fine, I have a phone at home tethering 24/7 to my computer to browse / chat / download roms kernels and it stays tethered not doing nothing 90% of the time I never get messages saying I'm tethering

How do you change the proxy?
Menu - Wireless Networks - Mobile Networks - APN then make a new APN under name put anything under APN put Phone under type put internet hit menu then save and your done

The bottom line is that AT&T can detect it. They just didn't bother enforcing it until the last 6 months. And they have ramped up the enforcement more and more to force people into the tethering plan involuntarily. I speak from first-hand experience!

This. Changing apns and such only makes it harder for ATT to detect. If they think you are, they can still check, and will find out.
Sent from my SGH-I997 using xda premium
For AT&T to know you are throttling they have to go through Billions of packets every second now with that they do sniff packets through their proxy and changing the APN helps avoid those problems and turning off tethering manager.
You can always encrypt your packets if you are that worried about it but from personal experience you should be fine.

Does changing my APN affect anything else? Should i only switch to the APN when I plan on tethering or should i use it all the time?
I'm just asking because the default APN has a bunch of info. What does all of that stuff do?
I got my ATT Note today. Rooted it, installed Titanium Backup (aready owned it), froze tether manager and Hot Spot works perfect.

Go to Dev forum and get the root kernel. Follow directions in that thread. Get titanium backup and superuser and uninstall tethering manager.

The Phone APN mentioned before is for HSPA+. To use LTE, you need ptr APN that is pre-configured on your phone.
So, by switch to Phone APN, you are disabling LTE and switched back to HSPA+. AT&T is still able to catch you (just ask those SGS2 owners who got letters/SMS).
Tethering is so 2010. With a GNote, why tether?
Btw, I pay for tethering but rarely use...only use for critical VPN required access. Actually work pays for the tethering.

The free version can be used to "uninstall" and backup apps; however, you will need the PRO (paid) version to "freeze" apps.
TiBu PRO is one of the most justifiable app purchases you will ever make.

Most come with a wifi tether app, ones i know of are Nils Business Sense and Rezrom( I think Scott's Cleanrom also). It takes a couple extra steps to get working-
Change device profile to Galaxy Nexus LTE & checkmark routing fix. Enable & disable, allowing root both times.
EDIT:

I've ran into an issue with it. I am on Rezrom Ex 3.4 ICS.
My issue is: With galaxy nexus LTE selected, wifi tether starts without errors, however my wifi interface starts to have issues. I installed the latest version of wifi tether, 3.1 beta 14 and using the generic ICS device profile it seems like it is going to work, however then it gives the message "Device has taken back control of wifi interface" or something to that effect. If anyone knows a fix for this I'd really like to know what to do. Dont really want to have to load a new rom just to get this working so I can tether my new nexus 7.
Anyway it seems there aren't many people having this problem (that i have found anyway) if I find a solution ill post with info.
Found thread with fixes. If your having this issue or any others try the steps here. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1540707

Hello all, I have a rooted S2 with a stock ROM (ICS). I had to accomplish a master reset due to some issues I was experiencing. Prior to the reset I was using WiFi tethering. I have a grandfathered account with AT&T and so I used the tethering hack/option with my phone previously. For the life of me I cannot get it to work once again. I have done research on he web and can not find how I did it before. I have Titanium back up and in reviewing all the apps I do NOT have Tethering Manager APK to freeze.
I remember that after I either installed or modified something on the phone that i would go through the normal tethering option in settings and select tethering. The little blue icon would show up in the notification bar but the dialog box would remain saying it was working on activating the tethering option. All I had to do was to select the Home button and Wa-La I had tethering active for my tablet.
I would appreciate any help in getting WiFi tethering to work again.

Probably not. I didn't even know you could tether without root as the big A wan't to sell you the ability to tether. If he pays att for the tethering plan he should contact customer service. If he wants to do it the XDA way he needs to flash a rom.
Just my opinion. I am not totally certain of any of the above information. Just the way I understand what information I have seen.

I got bluetooth tethering working with no issues at all using the EasyTether app. That's on the Google Edition ROM, though.
Try treve's mod. I entered verizon with the limited data plan so I cant tell you if it works on the s4 but it worked on my old sprint note 2 and sprint is even tougher on wireless tether than verizon

This is a modified apk for the VS985 that bypasses Verizon's provisioning checks and gives free use of your 4G LTE data per the FCC C Block rules. It also enables additional advanced options such as Port Forwarding and DHCP Server configuration.
A number of people had contacted me requesting that I make a version of this specifically for the VS985 as I had done for the G2 (VS980). Though I don't own the G3 it has been tested on one (thanks @Rodeojones and @roxy.schram) and should work just fine with ART unlike the other copies of my mod that seem to be floating around.
How to Install:
Peform a full nandroid backup.
If you have a custom recovery, you can simply download the zip from the downloads section and flash it in twrp.
If you only have root, you will need to backup and remove the existing /system/app/HotspotProvision.apk & odex files and put the modified apk from the download section in their place (odexing is not necessary) with rw-r--r-- (644) permissions and reboot.
Downloads:
VS98512B Hotspot Mod
VS98523B Hotspot Mod
VS98535B Hotspot Mod
VS98546A Hotspot Mod
Devs: You do not need to ask my permission to include this in your roms, but you DO need to put a clear credit in your OP. I do not authorize any mirrors to be created or posted.
Glad I could help. I'm not a developer, so the least I can do is test a ROM or mod from time to time. And for those who may be curious, I tested this with both ART and Dalvik and it worked great.

No, don't be silly.
It gives unlimited tethering to those of us with unlimited data already through our grandfathered contracts.
If you are on a current plan, you already are allowed to use your limited metered tiered data for tethering, if you want, without this.

I have been traveling and have not had much ability to troubleshoot this with another device, but I cannot get my laptop computer to connect!! It sees the network and asks for my password, then says it cannot connect to this network. Tried various configs for the hotspot but no change. Figuring it is something with my computer, but I cannot figure it out.
Using auto dns/dhcp. Any tips would be appreciated. I have used the hotspot in the past when the first mod came out. Installed jasmine and will not work correctly now.
-----EDITED-----
Actually, if i use a third party tether app, it works fine.
The tethering provision is already unlocked in Jasmine. Did it not work in Jasmine without this mod?
Dumb question.
I'm stock everything for now. Unlimited data. What happens when I turn my hotspot on? Does it send something to Verizon?
If you 100% stock like you say, and on grandfathered unlimited data (like me), when you try to tether you get redirected to a Verizon site that tells you to pay for it.
This can be avoided in a number of ways, including installing this mod.
