This is a modified apk for the VS985 that bypasses Verizon's provisioning checks and gives free use of your 4G LTE data per the FCC C Block rules. It also enables additional advanced options such as Port Forwarding and DHCP Server configuration.
A number of people had contacted me requesting that I make a version of this specifically for the VS985 as I had done for the G2 (VS980). Though I don't own the G3 it has been tested on one (thanks @Rodeojones and @roxy.schram) and should work just fine with ART unlike the other copies of my mod that seem to be floating around.
How to Install:
Peform a full nandroid backup.
If you have a custom recovery, you can simply download the zip from the downloads section and flash it in twrp.
If you only have root, you will need to backup and remove the existing /system/app/HotspotProvision.apk & odex files and put the modified apk from the download section in their place (odexing is not necessary) with rw-r--r-- (644) permissions and reboot.
Downloads:
VS98512B Hotspot Mod
VS98523B Hotspot Mod
VS98535B Hotspot Mod
VS98546A Hotspot Mod
Devs: You do not need to ask my permission to include this in your roms, but you DO need to put a clear credit in your OP. I do not authorize any mirrors to be created or posted.
Glad I could help. I'm not a developer, so the least I can do is test a ROM or mod from time to time. And for those who may be curious, I tested this with both ART and Dalvik and it worked great.
Thanks bro your a beast

Is this really a thing? I can turn on mobile hotspot without any mod. Didn't VZW lose a court case forcing them to allow this out of the box?

No, don't be silly.
It gives unlimited tethering to those of us with unlimited data already through our grandfathered contracts.
If you are on a current plan, you already are allowed to use your limited metered tiered data for tethering, if you want, without this.

I'd expect root is needed, as you have to rename the original hotspot system files, and park this new one in system, with proper permissions.

computer cannot connect
I have been traveling and have not had much ability to troubleshoot this with another device, but I cannot get my laptop computer to connect!! It sees the network and asks for my password, then says it cannot connect to this network. Tried various configs for the hotspot but no change. Figuring it is something with my computer, but I cannot figure it out.
Using auto dns/dhcp. Any tips would be appreciated. I have used the hotspot in the past when the first mod came out. Installed jasmine and will not work correctly now.
-----EDITED-----
Actually, if i use a third party tether app, it works fine.
The tethering provision is already unlocked in Jasmine. Did it not work in Jasmine without this mod?
Dumb question.
I'm stock everything for now. Unlimited data. What happens when I turn my hotspot on? Does it send something to Verizon?
If you 100% stock like you say, and on grandfathered unlimited data (like me), when you try to tether you get redirected to a Verizon site that tells you to pay for it.
This can be avoided in a number of ways, including installing this mod.

Hi, so I'm currently using an unlocked Samsung i777 outside the US. I'm loving this phone except for the fact that wifi tethering is not working. Every time I try to enable it, it says mobile data not available or invalid sim.
I can use my sim's 3G/HSDPA connecton just fine and my sim has a data plan and I can even use tethering on other mobile phones so I'm assuming that AT&T locked down the wifi tethering or something. How can I make it work preferably without rooting since I managed to unlock this ohome without root?
If I do need to root, well what are the apps that I need to make wifi hotspot work? Thanks.

You need to root, and you actually need to REMOVE an app (TetheringManager2.apk) to make it work.
It's AT&T's bigbrotherware
I hope you're using a local Sim and not planning on tethering while roaming, that would be a heart attack inducing bill waiting for you when you come home!!

I have same problem. But i can not find app TetheringManager2.ark in system/app. Can you tell what i should do? Thanks.
cannot tether after rooting and renamed TetheringManager2.apk
the file is there... i am in the same boat as you are. i bought an used i777.
you need to root the phone first, personally, i used Root Manager and located the file and renamed it (instead of deleting it)
BUT.. i still cannot tether :-( still getting the mobile data is not available or invalid SIM.
can anyone offer some insight to this issue ?
---------- Post added at 01:38 AM ---------- Previous post was at 01:23 AM ----------
i tried to rename the file to something else, but did not get tethering to work.
i was mad and DELETED the file i renamed altogether and u know what - tethering works !
so i guess you will have to root the phone, DELETE the file, then you can get tethering to work.
have fun.
In the op it states she does not have root. Therefor what she wants to do is not possible. U need root to access the file she needs to remove.

UCLE5 remove the tetheringmanager.apk,is not work,open the wifi hostpot,setting is FC,why?
remove tether provisional app wifi hotspot still do not work EDIT:hotspot now work
hello everyone,
as the title shows I have remove the tether provision app with super manager as I can't find the tethering manager apk stated on this thread. Maybe it is on the stock GB rom I'am running stock ICS rom rooted and running on latest siyah kernel. When I tried to open wifi hotspot it just sits there unresponsive for several seconds then says "settings application stop working". I am on vacation here in the Philippines and using the local sim cards available here I have data on my phone but I can't share it on my other devices as the wifi hotspot is not functioning. I have searched several sites and install several root tethering apps to no avail. Any guide or help is greatly appreciated. Thnx
edit: I have now a functional wifi hotspot. I have downloaded FoxFi App from the market and it works. I have installed uninstalled reinstalled this app several times before but hangs and force closes upon activating the wifi hotspot. I have uninstalled the tether provision app on the root folder with Root Uninstaller as stated above. I don't know if it helps but when reinstalling the FoxFi App again, wifi hotspot on my phone now works. Though I just want to share as me myself badly needed this as my phone is not that big enough on surfing the net. Activating the phones native wifi hotspot is pretty sweet though.
2nd Edit: Though I just want to make it simple and share for everyone to know how do I make my wifi hotstpot work on stock at&t ics rom. This is a very simple step to make and works only if you are rooted. I am not responsible if you do something wrong with your phone. This do works for me..This is a guideline only for anyone wanting to have a wifi hotspot tethering on their phone as in my case running on stock at&t ics.
1. Download and install Unistaller Root app (or any root file manager app) and FoxFi tethering app ( other app may also work) from the google play market.
2. Open Uninstaller Root App and allow it SU permission then open system apps.
3. Navigate thru it and uninstall tethering provision apk.
4. Open FoxFi Tethering app , wifi hotspot should now work. Enjoy..... Do not use the native wifi hotspot from your phone as it will not work.
FYI: As in my case FoxFi will not work if you still have the Tethering Provision Apk in your phone it will just hang and forced closes when opening the app.
Hope anybody running Stock ICS will find this useful. Have a Great day....

Those with unlimited data plans do not get free tethering, it is blocked and requires you to pay for it.

Root is what I needed to get wifi tethering to work, remove bloatware, and run many purchased apps that required root.

Not true at all.
I have unlimited and i use portable hotspot which bypasses the VZ activation and I've never been charged.
The WiFi Tether - TrevE Mod method did not work for me.
However, this simple little app does work:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=kr.core.technology.wifi.hotspot&hl=en
I guess the authentication system used by Verizon isn't all that robust, if all you need is a simple app that doesn't even require root to bypass the subscription check and start the native WiFi tethering. Heh.
I have this issue nonstop.. It's random and annoying..
I've gone an hour or two without problems and then all of the sudden 4g icon disappears and comes back over and over until I stop tethering and restart it.. and then it happens immediately.. If I keep restarting tethering eventually it will hang on without dropping out but it will start it's crap again eventually.
I could have sworn Trev-E caused the phone to do the same thing. I want to say the issue is the phone and or the radio firmware.. possibly the kernel?

These settings for TrevE Mod have worked perfectly for me on Vzw since the first day I rooted. Also, make sure you have the right version from 11/22/2012 and uninstall any old versions, apparently it does not upgrade very well. Good luck.

You're definitely confused, so I'll help.... The ATT Hotspot app is to connect your phone to the wireless hotspot ATT provides for free at various locations so you don't use your data plan
Wireless tethering is to connect another device (laptop, WiFi tablet, another phone, etc) to use your data plan on your phone wirelessly, turning your phone into a router, receiving data and broadcasting an SSID like your WiFi at home / work does
Make sense?

hrmmm, i guess i need to figure that out... im new to att, just switched when getting this phone. all i know is i am on their mobile share plan with unlimited talk & text, then we pay for the 4g data plan. so maybe the fee is built into the 4gb share data plan.

i THINK i did that already. not exactly sure what that last step meant lol. but i am rooted, and have treve mod on it. and have all the settings in it set. though when i use it as a hotspot, the data shows up under the tethering section on the tmobile account app. the only way ive found around it is using vpn shield. then the data isnt collected. I'm in the same boat as you with an unlimited data plan but I'm getting blocked for tethering. On my HTC One S there was a file I used to flash in TWRP that unlocked the APNs using the stock ROM when rooted. . But I have not found anything like that for the One yet.
I have read of some people using SQLite to edit the phones carrier list on other phones. But I'm not a developer and I don't know if that would work on this phone or not.
Just throwing an idea out there since the thread is here.

I got the stock hotspot app to work again. I had to go ahead and unlock my bootloader at HTCDev, flash TWRP recovery, flash a custom ROM (which I did NOT want to do), and add a different APN to get it to work again. I flashed the Revolutionary ROM, which is pretty close to a stock M7 ROM with a few minor tweaks. Has the same stock feel. Even on this ROM, the fast.t-mobile.com APN will block tethering and give you the page to add it to your plan. But if you add the old epc.tmobile.com APN, it will save and not switch back to the fast.t-mobile APN. Also, the APNs are not locked, you can delete it if you want.
I'm just testing out this ROM right now to see if I can get the same kind of battery life I get with the stock ROM. This is the main concern for me. The stock ROM got me 3 days of use out of the device. That's unheard of on any Android device I've ever used. If I have to spend weeks working out bugs and flashing different kernels, I'm going to run the RUU and return my device back to stock and continue searching for a way to modify my stock ROM or just give up and use one of those clunky slow apps in the market place.
But basically, you just need to find a way to unlock the APNs and you can get wifi tethering/hotspot to work natively.
Did anyone get Wifi Tether to work with 4.3 ROM? It did not for me. I am s-off.

But basically, you just need to find a way to unlock the APNs and you can get wifi tethering/hotspot to work natively.

works thanks
Is there a way to get wireless tethering working on VS985 without having to add tethering to your plan (FoxFi or other)? I used it all the time on my Note 2 and have come to depend on it. Unlimited data plan. Thanks.
This link should do it for you.

It works. You need to change the name of the network each time. Also make sure to enable proper permissions I can confirm it is working.

I was under the impression that FoxFi works on the LG G3 and you don't need root.
Foxfi does not work! The http://forum.xda-developers.com/lg-g3/general/g3-hotspot-hack-t2812305 does. But you need to be rooted which is a easy as a breeze.
I got a "404" error on the prior link. This one works: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2812305
I've got a question out on how to use Tasker to automate having to refill password and/or link name each time you use the apk included with the thread.

Yeah as mentioned by others it does not work. Unfortunately I need my work email on my phone and can't root it so for now I am use USB tethering via PDANet. Hopefully the developer finds a way around it. On the bright side, my laptop keeps the phone charged while I tether to it.

What you could also do is just change the channel. So pretty much just change something about the network everytime. i'd just go with the channel so the ssid just stays the same everytime
