I purchased an AT&T Note 1 or i717. It currently has version 4.0.4 on it and would like to get the most recent (AND STABLE) version I can. A basic stock android would be fine, doesn't need to be a rocking mod or anything like that, just something that won't crash every day and where everything works.
Can someone PLEASE point me in the right direction? I did the search function but couldn't find out where to begin. Thanks for all who are able to assist me

Kies will get you the latest firmware available for your device.
1. On a PC open http://www.samsung.com/us/kies/
2. Click Download for windows
3. Install Kies
4. Open Kies
5. Write down serial number of phone device (it's under battery)
6. Plug in phone to PC and power up phone while HOLDING volume down
7. Once you see the download screen on phone press volume up
8. On PC in Kies click "tools - Firmware Upgrade and Initialization"
9. Type in SGH-I717 (all caps)
10. Type in serial number
11. Follow directions
12. Once phone reboots you will have the latest OFFICIAL firmware (JB 4.1.2 as of 6-1-2013)
13. Perform a factory data reset before proceeding (it helps it run smoother)
14. Type in google info and enjoy!
Why not use the built-in OS update? Waaay better than Kies.
Just go to settings> phone> check for update. No PC needed.

I thought upgrading to 4.1.2 was ONLY available via Kies? (we are talking stock upgrade, not custom)
(or Odin I guess, if you download the flashable file)
The current stock at&t rom is 4.1.2 and it is delivered OTA through update menu.
Even though its an AT&T phone, I had it factory unlocked. Currently using in on a T-Mobile service. Gonna have to try the Kies method I guess.

Damn. Here in Canada (or at least in BC), its only available via Kies. GB -> ICS was OTA, but ICS -> JB isn't. At least on Bell its not.
Sorry if I stepped in where I shouldn't.
That's good information about Canadian carriers not offering OTA upgrades. Lucky for this amigo he's at&t so he can get up to date OTA.

Ok, having issues here. I've done 1-6 when I do #7, Kies makes a noise, like its trying to connect to the phone, goes to another screen for just a a second, looks like a cable attaching to a phone, then goes back to splash screen. Tried several usb ports, different cables, even Kies' troubleshooting guide where it reinstalls the driver. Still the same thing. Any suggestions?
You can try this method:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1506330
I have the same .tar file, but built for Bell here in Canada.
I flash it through odin, then flash TWRP. Then I flash my bell modem, flash counter reset file, then re-flash stock recover. Then I use OTA to get to ICS, then Kies to get to JB.
I can write more specific instructions for what 'I' do, if that might help. I can also try to track down files for ATT (not bell) when I get a bit of free time. Hope that helps you get closer to the end you are wanting!
If it wouldn't be too much trouble, sure. I can't figure out the next step. I'm considering just selling it and buying something new with JB already in it, lol.
Has anyone experienced the same issues or am I just the special one
Is it the stock 4.0.4 on the phone now? Then, you should be able to just upgrade to stock 4.1.2.
I was never on stock, so I don't know if the update can be done via OTA, but you should be able to use Kies on your computer to update it. At the very least, you will have JB even with the stock bloat.

First sorry for bad english.
I bring the firmware 2.3 and 2.2 for YP-G70, I do not know to whom to allocate the credits because I got the information on a Japanese site, but I did my test and the two worked.
so I know the 2.3.5 firmware is available from samsfirmware.
The tutorial is simplles: Programs
needed for the upgrade:
I can not post links because I am a new user, but researches on google!
Samsung Kies (only for the samsung drivers are installed)
Odin3-v1.82
Link: seek the Multiupload: XCQS1S2T2G
firmware 2.3.5
Link: look on google: YP-G70_XET_G70XXKPF
or
firmware 2.2.2
link: look on google: G70XXKD6
1. Unzip the downloaded file
2. Place the apparatus in Download mode (press the lock button + volume down + Home at the same time)
3. Open Odin
4. Click PDA and add the new firmware file in the case the file .md5
5. Connect the USB phone in and wait for the Odin recognize
6. Click Start and wait
7. Ready!
Procedure at your own risk!
Thanks for the information. Samsung is damn slow in releasing updates in all countries..
Did anyone try this?
What's the password for the 2.3.5 downloaded file? It is not unzipping because it is password protected..

excuse, the password is: sampro.pl
Done!
Thanks very much bro, it is DONE!!!
I followed your instructions and now the firmware version is updated! Not had time yet to see what's new but does seem faster for usual interaction..
See picture below! Forgive crappy quality as taken from my phone in a hurry..
BTW the password is not what you gave, it is ******.pl you can google for the correct password as I am not sure if I am supposed to post it here..
thanks, very helpful.
works like a charm.
i take it this is not for the USA YP-70
if not then you had better state it before someone screws up their usa model.
Most regions should by now have access to the official 2.3.5 update.
If you're like me just got your device and you had it delivered with 2.2.2. Check kies. There might be an update available.
1. Download kies from samsungs website.
2. Press menu->Settings ->Wireless & Network ->USB-settings ->Check: Samsung Kies.
3. Press menu->Settings -> Apps -> Develop -> Unckeck: USB.
4. Start kies on the pc
5. Connect the usb cable.. and relax for a bit and wait and see what kies says.
For anyone wondering, i bought my device in sweden and it was delivered with:
2.2.2
2.6.32.9

After kies update:
2.3.5

Here in Brazil has not updated the kies, so I do the same as Odin is not the official one.
radx you can backup your firmware and make available for download?
Sorry I dont know how to do that.
I believe there is an option in Odin before you flash a rom look otherwise a "dump" or backup button. Always a good idea before flashing any thing. It allows you back to a factory returnable state.

You could flash rjs kernel in Odin and that would install ClockworkMod. From there you can do a nandroid backup. Well i think that's how it works.

Hello guys.
I recently bought the Galaxy Note i717 locked to Rogers (Canada).
The seller told me that he has installed custom rom on the device. I thought it would not be problem but it seems like my phone is kind of laggy compared to others'.
I tried to connect KIES to install the original ICS firmware but my mac does not recognize my note.
The message on KIES when I connect USB cable is that ' device not responding '.
I tried turning on/off the phone and USB debugging mode.
I haven't back up my phone as I could not get it connected with computer.

Install CWM Recovery and you can install any of the custom roms. All you have to do is install CWM and put the downloaded rom on your SD Card and install it with CWM. Go here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1526431 and download the one that says ODIN in the first post then read the instructions to flash CWM Recovery with ODIN in post two on the page link above. Now you can flash roms without needing your computer. Now you can head over to to the development area for the I717 Note and pick a rom to flash with CWM. make sure you read the instructions for each rom cause it will tell you to do a full wipe on most and you do that inside CWM. Another tip is that you will never ever need KIES and the only use for it is having the Samsung driver that get installed with it so your PC will sync with your device. KIES is kinda useless.
EDIT: you probably already have CWM installed. Before going and tryin to install it hold down the power and volume up volume down at the same time and the device will shut off but keep holding down those three buttons. Now the device will vibrate and the Samsung logo will appear, let go of the power button but keep the volume buttons pressed in and CWM should pop up after a few seconds. If you have CWM already installed do not flash it again just find a rom and flash it through CWM like I stated above. In CWM the volume buttons move you up and down the list and the power selects.

Go to this thread for a quick tutorial on flashing http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1586223
There is no "original" ICS firmware for i717. As of yet no i717 ICS firmware have been released by carriers, save for the unofficial leaks, which you seem to have.
If you want to go back to stock firmware of Rogers, make sure to do a factory reset in CWM and then flash a stock GB ROM. The other choice is to wait for the official ICS release from Rogers (which I hear is coming this month) and then flash that when it comes out.
Otherwise, search for stock i717R GB firmware on the forums, put it in SD card and then flash it using CWM.
If you don't want to lose your data you could try using Titanium Backup from the play store to backup your apps and data, flash your firmware, and then download titanium backup from the play store again on your new firmware and use the restore function (if you are flashing a stock rom, you need to root first before using the restore function). Don't know how well that would work though, never tried it myself.
I've read just about every thread on here with people having issues updating and nothing has worked for me. I can't seem to get kies to connect to my phone to use the emergency tool (tied just about every method here). I'm thinking it maybe best to try my hand again at reverting back to gb and see if kies will connect. I'm not sure what tools I need to go back to gb, rom, modem etc, and which order to flash them at. I've downloaded to my pc the big rar file located in the dev sticky section for unbricking but when I place the file into odin and run it, it fails...what do I do?

There is an issue with Kies updating if the modem file does not match what its looking for. If you have changed in ROM/rooted, etc there is a chance you have installed a version of the modem it deems unfit...and refused to update.
Follow these instructions to update your Note to the official ICS unrooted AT&T release;
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1731654

Here is the simple way to do it and you can do it through Kies no matter what Firmware you are on.
1: Take battery out and write down the serial number exactly how it is written.
2: Put battery back in and cover back on.
3: Restart phone.
4: Place phone in Download Mode by holdin volume down and power buttons at the same time then when you get to the menu screen it will tell you to press volume up to continue, do that.
5: Run Kies, connect your device and inside Kies click on tools, in the dropdown menu click on Firmware Upgrade And Initialization.
6: In the popup screen type your serial number exactly how it it written under the battery and then type SGHI717 with all caps for the model name.
7: You will get a popup about downloading the firmware upgrade press ok.
8: Another popup will ask you if you agree, check the box about how you read and agree and click start upgrade.
Now Kies will download the firmware upgrade and your device will be upgraded to ICS.
FYI...Need to enter the dash in the model name = SGH-I717

Is anyone else not able to upgrade to ANYTHING from any version of stock, unrooted KH7 or KK6? I like to try out ROMs from time to time, but will usually flash back to stock unrooted KH7 using Mobile Odin. I then will plug in USB and make sure I have the latest drivers installed, fire up Kies, get recognized as being ready for the ICS (LE5) update, so then I'm back to stock ICS. I do this because I rely on my phone for my job sometimes. And if I'm going to run stock, I want the ROM and upgrade process to be completely official.
In the past couple of weeks, Kies recognizes the current revision of firmware that I have, but shows that that version is the current version for our device (SGH-I777). It does this with KK6 and KH7. If I select "firmware upgrade and initialization" option, it offers to reinstall firmware that is currently on the device. I get no error messages of any kind.
I have already done all basic troubleshoting steps: Kies and driver un/re-install. I have the latest version for both installed. I have also ensured that Heimdall drivers are not installed for the USB port that I use for Kies update.
Any advice is greatly appreciated.
UPDATE:
I resolved this issue by:
1. Disconnecting my USB cable
2. Selecting "Tools > Firmware Upgrade and Initialization"
3. Following instructions in firmware upgrade window that opens after step 2
4. Inputting model and serial numbers as listed on the back of the phone under the battery and clicking "OK"
5. Booting into download mode by holding both vol buttons + plugging in USB, then pushing vol up at the download mode warning screen
Once I did all that, I clicked "OK" to begin the upgrade process as usual. Instructions beyond step 3 are shown on screen after step 2 is completed, including the correct button combo for download mode.

Was on jellybean but prefer gingerbread thanks. Aside from the minimal extra features in jb, gingerbread gives a day plus hours of battery, smoothe as butter, and I prefer touchwiz. having bone stock jellybean makes all my android devices seem too similar and it gets boring. I prefer touchwiz widgets and motion gestures. Everything in jelly bean I can do on gingerbread. Google now is just an easy way to search but isnt really too crazy of a leap from regular search bar. I do miss the swipe to close tasks but I could live without it. To each there own

Official Samsung Galaxy S3 Android 4.2.2
Update Rolls Out The Backdoor
Posted by Travis Williams
If you are an owner of the Samsung Galaxy S3 with
model number GT-i9305 you will be happy to hear that
OTA updates are being sent out by Vodafone in Spain.
Owners of the handset are able to download it through
KIES and if you are in the UK you are able to download
the update and then install it manually.
The update does not come with any extras, such as
ClockworkMod and you don’t have to have anything
installed as the update takes place with the ODIN tool.
Check out the instructions below, but you take
responsibility for updating your handset.
Android 4.1.2 XXBME3 Jelly Bean Firmware Details
PDA: I9305XXBME3
CSC: I9305ATLBME2
Version: 4.1.2
Date: June, 2013
Pre-Requisites
Take note that the XXBME3 firmware along with the
instructions are only for the Samsung Galaxy S3 GT-
i9305 version. You should check the model number of
your device in Settings – About phone.
Before undertaking the update you will have to back-up
your settings and data to avoid losing it.
Make sure that the handset is not locked to any carrier
and that the boot loader has been unlocked.
You should also check that you have the USB drivers
installed on the computer.
Make sure that you have USB debugging enabled, you
can go into Settings – Developer Options on Android 4.0
or if you have Android 2.3, you can find this in Settings –
Applications – Development. If you have Jelly Bean 4.2
you will need to go into Settings – About Phone, choose
build number and then tap on this seven times to reveal
the hidden Developer options in Settings.
You should then out a tick in the check box under USB
debugging mode in Settings – Developer options.
You should have around 80% charge in the battery to
make sure the handset does not switch off.
How to Install Official Android 4.1.2 XXBME3 Jelly Bean
OTA on Galaxy S3 GT-I9305
Step 1: Extract the firmware zip file to the desktop to get
a .tar.md5 file and some other files (optional).
Step 2: Extract Odin zip file to obtain Odin3 v3.07.exe
along with few other files.
Step 3: Power off the phone and wait for vibration (about
5-6 seconds) to confirm complete device shutdown.
Now boot the phone into Download Mode by pressing
and holding Volume Down, Home and Power button
together until a construction Android robot icon with a
triangle appears on screen. Then hit Volume Up button
to enter Download Mode.
Step 4: Launch Odin3 v3.07.exe that you obtained in
Step 2 as an Administrator, as Admin privileges are
required to complete the firmware installation process
smoothly.
Step 5: Connect your phone to computer via USB cable.
When the device connects successfully, a message
saying “Added!” appears in ODIN and the ID: COM box
will turn yellow with the corresponding COM port
number. If the message fails to appear, try reinstalling
the phone’s USB drivers or changing the port on the
computer.
Step 6: Choose the following files from the extracted
I9305XXBME3 folder that you obtained in Step 1 by
using respective checkboxes:
Select the PDA checkbox, and click the ‘.tar.md5′ file
Tap the Phone checkbox, and select the file named
‘modem’ (ignore if such file is not found)
Choose the CSC checkbox, and click the file named
‘CSC’ (ignore if there is no such file)
Click the PIT checkbox, and choose the ‘.pit’ file (ignore
if the file is missing)
Step 7: In Odin, enable Auto Reboot and F. Reset Time
options by selecting the checkboxes. But the Re-
Partition checkbox must be selected only if a .pit file
was chosen in the previous step in ODIN.
Step 8: To prevent ROM related errors, verify Step 6 and
Step 7 are done correctly. Then hit the START button to
begin flashing the firmware.
Step 9: Once the firmware installation is complete, the
phone will reboot automatically and soon a PASS
message with green background appears in the left-
most box at the very top of Odin. Now it is safe to
unplug the USB cable to disconnect the device from
computer.
The Galaxy S3 GT-I9305 is now running on the latest
Android 4.1.2 XXBME3 Jelly Bean OTA firmware. Go to
Settings > About Phone to verify the firmware installed.
Troubleshooting:
If the Samsung Galaxy S3 is stuck at boot animation or
Samsung logo after Step 9, then go to recovery mode
(press and hold the Volume Up, Home and Power
buttons together) and perform Wipe data/Factory Reset
as well as Wipe Cache Partition before choosing reboot
system now option. NOTE: Use Volume keys to navigate
between options and Power key to select an option in
recovery. Performing data wipe task will only erase your
phone’s internal memory and not the data on SD card.
