HTC sensation only boots using fastboot. - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I recently rooted my HTC sensation and i have now achieved S-off and unlocked my phone.
The main problem is that now if my phone turns off to reboot it I need to go into the recovery and to the command Fastboot boot boot.img. i really need a solution to this because its really annoying to have to use my computer every time I need to reboot my phone especially because im using a CWM and i have a nightly CM rom currently installed
HELP PLEASE

Sounds like something is wrong with the kernel, try to do a full wipe and flash the ROM again
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda premium

thankswill try that im going on holiday so i will do it when i get back hopefully my phone won't die

ive tried that now and its still not working, i also tried flashing a custom ROM and its still not working.

Maybe try to reflash your bootloader?
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda premium

I've tried flashing the bootloader and the problems still occurring.

any other ideas?

I don't own a sensation so I don't know this is a common issue, but you can always try reverting to stock and restoring radio secure flags, this can tell you if its firmware/software or a hardware fault
Sent from my Nexus 4 using Tapatalk 2

is their possibly a link you could provide to help me with restoring radio secure flags or is that restored when reverting back to stock.
plz and thank you

Hi,
Try running a RUU.
Look HERE
Are you supercid?

hello I fixed the problem I didn't use the RUU however because I was really confused doing it.
the way In which I had done it was by factory resetting my phone and completely wiping the data and the cache so I didn't have any rom installed it was just the phone and the bootloader. then I went and re-installed the ROM I had chosen with the CWM recovery. although after I had installed the rom and the G-apps I wen and I opened a command prompt window and used the following instruction:
Fastboot Flash boot boot.img
after this I had rebooted my phone using the code:
Fastboot boot boot.img because I didn't know I had fixed the problem but I had to reset my phone and It just worked so thank you all so much for your help I really appreciate all the help and support given :good::victory:

If your on 2.3.4 that's your issue.those kernels won't work for it.pull battery.hold power and volume down go into recovery when battery is put back in..

I did that but when i choose recovery it boots to the htc logo and then keeps rebooting ...
no one knows what i can do ? :/ is there a way to reset the phone without recovery ?
You pulled the battery? Cause if you don't and fastboot is on.its would do that.
sent from my badass EVO 3D running Kaos Hybrid 4.20 using tapatalk
yes i did it just as you said ...
If you still can't get into recovery or the phone continuously bootloops after the battery pull, just run the latest RUU.
What is a RUU and how do i run it ? Do you have a link ? Thanks for the replies.
Have you taken the latest OTA, or have you ran revolutionary on your phone?
yes i have revolutionary on the phone
Go here, download the .exe with the 1.13.651.7, and run it as admin.
thanks, Is it a problem if i'm not on sprint? cause i'm in france and got the gsm version.
Yes, that would be a problem...try this thread and see if your version is listed.
i guess i'll try the "europe" one... if i dont risk to brick my phone by doing so ...
Tried and didn't work wasn't the good one... I hope i will find the good one soon i'll bookmark your link hoping that my version will be upped...
Thank you for your help.
Did you solve the problem?
Hi I just have the same problems like you ... I am in France, and after installing a new kernel, the phone is an a restarting loop.
I can go to the recovery mode (revolutionary) , I have tried to install different kernel and different ROM, but it alwas failed...
Thanks
MikRunny problems
I have a similar problem.
I tried installing MikRunny, (I flashed the boot.img multiple times, and did a full wipe, multiple times), but I keep getting a bootloop.
I fastbooted the boot.img, and I replaced the boot.img in the kernel map in MikRunny.zip.
My phone is (according to recovery) S-OFF, Revolutionary, 1.49 HBOOT, GSM.
That was the problem, the boot.img was not for GSM, but for CDMA.
But yet, I replaced it, and it still doesn't work...

Search Google, Rootzwiki, and XDA for an SD bootable CWM or TWRP recovery image for the phone. Use all terms for the Evo 3D (shooter, 3vo, E3D, and even the HTC model number, which is PG86100). Write it to a microSD with dd in Linux or Win32DiskImager in Windows. After it's done writing, just drop your zips onto the card as you normally would and place it back into the phone. Proceed to recovery as you normally would. Wipe system, data, cache, dalvik cache, and battery stats. Now flash your ROM zip and follow it with your GAPPS zip. Reboot system and pray for the best. If you need any more assistance or help, feel free to PM me. Hope this helps, I know how bricking a phone feels. Just remember that there's no such thing as a permanent brick, unless you hit it with a real brick .

Hey i ran into this problem yesterday flashing this Kernel...i used the flash gui app...what happened was it booted after it flashed....and it stuck in bootloop...i tried reflashing it the regular way just through cwm and it wasnt doing anything...so i did a google search on how to flash kernels on hboot 1.5 this is what i got...http://youtu.be/HclYpo0ZR3s that youtube video shows how to flash the kernel....THE WAY I KNEW HOW TO....but he says at the end there is a backup way to flash kernels..he says its longer but it also works just as good he says that you fastboot flash it via command prompt...so this gave me an idea...he says open up command prompt and prompt it to the folder you have used to unlock the device...unzip the boot.img file from the kernel your using in command prompt youd type fastboot flash boot boot.img....THIS NEXT PART I THOUGHT OF MYSELF. i removed the boot.img from the rom i was using and flashed that first AND FLASHED THE EXACT ROM I REMOVED THE BOOT.IMG FROM TO GET IT ROOTED. Not only did i solve my original kenel problem where my radios were jacked up BUT, i also got this kernel to work, and my synergy rom to work with the kernel, everything works and i was unbricked...I HOPE ANYBODY WHO RUNS INTO THIS PROBLEM DOES THIS AND THEY ARE OK.

I had an issue kinda similar like this and ended up having to flash the RUU through the bootloader. It is the stock firmware 605.19, and I had to reroot. It's a pain I know but it works

My friend's phone tried to pull an OTA while he had CWM recovery installed, and it started boot looping. Had to download the stock recovery, name is PG05IMG.zip in the root of the SDCard, and force the phone to boot to the bootloader and install it. Once it did, the phone started up, rebooted itself, and installed the OTA fine. Sounds like yours may be trying to do something similar?
If so rooted phones need caches cleared for the ota to work.
Sent from my ADR6400L using Tapatalk 2
From my understanding, Rooted can still take OTA, but you have to have stock recovery to do it (as I witnessed earlier). You will lose root, and will have to re-flash recovery to TWRP, CWMR, or whatever your normal choice is, and then re-apply the su.zip, but otherwise easy as pie.

Hello, first of all I would like to thank everyone who has posted in this thread to try and help out. I just started having a very similar problem- I'm rooted and running stock, but apparently my phone accepted an OTA and I'm stuck in a bootloop as well.
I got into CWM recovery and downloaded the stock recovery PG05IMG.zip, but it won't install. It just aborts every time I try to install it. I'm a noob at this stuff and not very good at dealing with these sorts of things and I've been having a panic attack for the past hour, so if anyone could help me as soon as possible I would really appreciate it.
I'm really scared of making things worse than they already are. I just want a working phone.

pull battery, wait a minute, turn on phone
when in bootloader screen,
volume down, select reboot
back to white screen, select recovery ( i had to do this twice)
hold volume up and power when black screen appears
choose the bottom option (wipe cache i believe)
choose reboot
phone should be good aftter this
( idont own a thunderbolt, but i had to fix this for a nother phone, called tech support and this worked)
hope this helps - hopefully saves someone from ruu'ing and wiping their phone

The zip won't work in CWM because it's not designed for use with CWM. It's designed for use in Fastboot. Should be on the root of your sd card. From off, if I'm correct (like this with other HTC devices), hold volume down and power to boot into fastboot. This will allow it to flash the stock recovery.

[Q] HTC EVO V 4G Stuck in Bootloader bootloop

Hello, so recently I tried to get S-OFF on my Evo through JuopunutBear. Something went wrong and I (mistakenly ) unlplugged the USB cable. Now my phone only boots up onto Bootloader. I can't access the recovery nor can I access adb. The only thing that works is fastboot. Can someone please help me? I have no idea what to do and after hours of searching, nothing like this has ever happened before I assume. I'm sort of a noob. I have adb installed and can use it but I don't know what commands to enter or what files to download or what. Is there any way I can reset my phone or get out of this bootloop? Thank You guys!

OK. So I looked into the guide, One of the attachments had a broken link so I couldn't do it. I tried flashing a stock RUU but it gave me an error. I tried getting the rom.zip from the temp and flashing that. My bootloader gave me an error and said something about the version being older than the firmware or something like that. I have finally gotten to my recovery, but that did not help. I've cleared EVERYTHING. Now I'm stuck in a bootloop where when the phone boots up it goes straight into JBear phone image with the arrow. I've tried everything. I still have no idea how to fix it. I really need some help.

Thanx for the help guys! Well, I fixed the bootloop and screen by flashing the boot.img. That got me stuck in an HTC logo bootloop, but I WAS SO HAPPY. I HAVE NEVER BEEN HAPPIER SEEN A BOOTLOOP THAN THIS. Well, since I knew how to fix this, I just flashed a stock ROM, and from there installed TWRP recovery and from there flashed a custom ROM (rooted, deodexed, stock, since I still don't have S-OFF). Now I'm just restoring my apps from Carbon( Helium) and getting some new themes. Thanks Guys!:laugh::laugh::laugh:
Just a heads up. The Evo V 4G seems to operate better when 4EXT recovery is used!

[Q] stuck in bootloop

Hi,
I have a very strange problem now (at least for me).
First some facts about the phone: It's unlocked Virgin Mobile phone, S-off, rooted, and has a usable 4ext recovery installed.
I also did some days ago when 4ext was installed a backup before trying anything else.
After that I tried different ROMs and most of them booted fine after flashing, and I used the last 2 days a JB 4.3 ROM until I found problems with the camera and wanted to see how this is for one of the other ROMs I tried before.
But after try to flash another ROM, it was stuck with on the HTC logo (the same ROM I flashed before without any problems, and of course after wiping all internal partitions like always). Also flashing any other ROM didn't help - even restoring the backup from the original ROM didn't solved this. Only using fastboot from the computer to write the boot image changed the hanging on th HTC logo in a boot loop now - and still no usable flashing is possible.
Does anyone has any ideas what the reason for this could be and how it can be solved to have a working phone again?
Thanks!

Try wiping everything, then reboot recovery, wipe everything again

It's hboot 1.50.5050
The hboot was only changed at the beginning after getting s-off. With this hboot all the ROMs I try now were working before.
However, for the original restore maybe this version could be a problem (hboot 1.58 was on the phone before), but should be no reason for the other ROMs to fail.
Try wiping everything, then reboot recovery, wipe everything again
Then try and flash again

Well, this works!
So far I wiped everything but then installed directly the ROM after it without a reboot. No I did like you proposed - wipe, reboot, wipe, flash - and it works again.
Is there a reason why it hasn't worked directly after wiping and needed a reboot between?
If all else fails try ruu through bootloader, you will still have s off

Just in case for the next time:
I can only find RUU for Sprint but not VM - do you have a link to a file for a VM phone?
Thanks a lot for the help!
Glad it worked, don't know why but there must have been an issue with recovery
Here is the pg86img I use for vm.
https://db.tt/eBcYZ7yu
Place on root of your sd and rename pg86img.zip
Reboot to bootloader and accept update
This will give you stock Rom and recovery and hboot...s off stays
So if you want to flash again, all you need to do is flash recovery...no unlocking necessary

Off hand the most likely scenario is the kernel didn't get flashed with the rest of the ROM. This is a known issue with TWRP and CWM on devices that are s-on. Try again with ext4 recovery and enable smart flash. It seems to be the recovery with the least amount of problems with this device, especially those that are s-on, and is the solution recommended by most devs here.
Thanks, i will try this and tell you if it is solved.

When flashing by smart flash on you have to flash the kernel seprately
Sent from my HTC_Amaze_4G using Tapatalk
Or the link might have gone bad one another user is also saying the same about cm but there is one more possibility the cm roms are usually quite a lot undervolted i think sports device supports it i had this problem on cm 11 and overvolting did the job but you guys cant even get to the main screen how are you going to overvolt you might just have to edit the kernel which i have no experience of.

If smart-flash is properly enabled the kernel will flash with the ROM. That's one of the main purposes of smart-flash.
To the OP: obviously you were able to successfully install the ROM this time since you didn't bootloop and were OK until you entered a PIN for the lockscreen. So this issue is different than the first, where you weren't even getting to the lockscreen. The first thing I would try is wiping then reinstalling CM from recovery. This time just try using it without a PIN for an hour and see if you have other issues. Only then set a PIN. If it crashes after setting a PIN, but was working fine before, you know there is a bug in that part of the ROM. If it begins crashing sooner then something else is the problem.
