[Q] LTE or OPTIMUS L9 - LG Optimus L9 P760, P765, P768, P769

I have the LG Optimus L9, for T-Mobile and I was wondering if it was worth sticking with it over the new LG Optimus F3 which is coming to T-Mobile. I like the big display on the L9, but dislike the lack of LTE or atleast HSPA+ 42Mbps. The Optimus F3 has 4 inch screen while the L9 has a 4.5 inch screen. That is the only thing holding me back right now. Just wondering what peoples opinions on this are.

2460Mah battery seems like a plus too... especially on a 4inch 800x480 screen, it should last a good while.
Current tmo speeds are fast enough for me so lack of lte is not a problem.

That is true. I have 2 questions. Is the LG Optimus L9 HSPA+ 42MBPS or only HSPA+ 21MBPS. And also I upgraded to the latest jellybean and get poor battery life. I did a reset and nothing. Wifi is draining my battery, and it's always connected. Also Phone idle is very high in battery drainage. Any ideas

The F6 looks like more of a device that is comparable to the Optimus L9. With a 4.5 in IPS display and dual core CPU it is easy to see why. Still it has LTE and NFC. Sadly no price or release date though http://www.engadget.com/2013/08/07/Optimus-F6-and-F3-on-T-Mobile/

Cant way to see the price
If the price is near he LG Optimus L9, then I'm all in. It looks cool. I'm wondering if the the L9 is HSPA+ 21 or HSPA+ 42 capable. If it's HSPA+ 42, then I feel there is no need for switching phones. However, if it only has HSPA+ 21, I'll look into the new phone when it comes out. With your L9, do you lose around 1% every half hour when the phone is idle?

Having had both phones, I really recommend the F3. The L9 is only HSPA+ 21 which was actually noticable at times. Also, the battery is considerably better, with a higher capacity and smaller screen. I also like the notifcation light around the home button on the F3. Price-wise, you can get either for $150 with possibly cash back straight from MetroPCS and then simply unlock it.

I think I'm going to wait to see how the LG Optimus F6 is priced. I would like a bigger screen than 4 inches.

[Q] Samsung 4G

How do you think the Samsung Charge will stack up to the competition? Not that exciting next to other Verizon upcoming LTE enabled devices? Or better than the rest?
Its a galaxy s with a better screen. It has the same internals. The thunderbolt has a better processor and a decent screen. The bionic is going to be a dual core monster and the sgs2 will be out later with the best of all worlds. The charge is a last generation smart phone with a new screen. I wouldnt put my money on it winning any contests.

Do we know if SGS2 will have LTE modem in it? I hope it does, but the only confirmed model of SGS2 is for AT&T currently. SGS2 4G will make my year.

Well there is a screen shot somewhere showing SGS2 coming to VZW but thats not a lot to go on. Still, I can't imagine they would ignore the VZW market. Likely they will just be months behind, the way the fascinate was to the captivate

This generation is different, though. Verizon, and only Verizon, is pursuing LTE for its next-gen data -- since EVDO sucks and is deeply limited. And since Voice over LTE (VoLTE, which is why I guess all the Verizon 4G phones have the lightning motif) doesn't exist yet and you need 1x and 3G data for full coverage anyway, this means that Verizon models will need two separate radios instead of just being able to swap the GSM chip for the CDMA chip. LTE is even bulkier than WiMax, because it requires a SIM card and MIMO as well.
So while AT&T and T-Mo (if the latter continues to exist) will get something basically equivalent to the SGS2, Verizon and Sprint will end up with a bigger form factor -- like the Epic or Charge. And we'll have to wait a while this time too.
AT&T is going to HSPA+ short term for "4G" and LTE is their long term plan, so they'll need the same LTE radio as VZW phones when they decide to start up their LTE network and phones/devices.
I'm waiting.
If I go 4G, I want more than just 4G. I want dual core, good battery, front camera, better screen, hdmi out, etc.
Since LTE is so new, I may wait a year anyways. I may pick up the Sony Xperia Play so I can have the latest Android with all the above except 4G while adding real game controls.

I hate to admit it as I was very much against switching, but I will be trying the new phone. 4 of my friends are also getting it and we geek out a good bit with our phones so I'm gonna test the waters. Luckily I know that if it's not exactly as I want it to be, I'll now have another 30 days to go back and get my beloved GSII.
No LTE in my city so why change?
No. Really don't see a reason to.

Just a heads up to everyone. AT&T Direct Corp stores will have the Skyrocket on sale for $149.99 starting Sunday. This price is good only at their stores, dealers will be the standard $249.99 pricing on a 2yr contract. Verified by 3 sources (2 prev managers I worked with) and 1 random local store.

Agreed. They used the verbiage, 'initial launch window' which leads me to believe they're doing this to lure people directly into their stores initially. Not sure how long but it definitely won't be the permanent price. If I can get any more solid info or source material, I'll update - but no promises.

That's my issues with it.
1. I just got the sga2 and the size of it is perfect. When I hold it in my right hand I can very easily swipe down the notifications or if I am typing with it is my ritgh hand and using my thumb I can do it easily and fairly accurately. With a bigger screen I don't know it will fit as nicely, in fact I am pretty sure it wont. I have the bionic and it drives me crazy because it so big and the thunderbolt is the same way.
2. Rom development learning curve. When the lye came out for Verizon there was a tremendous amount of issues ans bugs with data switching from 4g to 3g and half the time you were left without any data. It will not be as easy for the devs to make Roms or even port them because for some it will be a new concept. Right now we have a few great roms to choose from. When the sga2 is out it will be a while until there is a any Roms. If anything I will wait until the last couple of days of my return period which is about 22 days from now, to see the progress of development, before I think of switching. Like I said the screen size is an issue for me. If it doesn't fit as nice as this phone then I definitely wont switch.
3. Battery life- even though the skyrkt has a bigger battery the battery life will be significantly less than what we got. All lte devices have shirty battery life, bionic, thunderbolt etc. I know this because I own them and as you can see which phone I favor because I am writing this post frlm it. The sga2 is by far the best phone out there, tried them all. Any deviation from this phone could possibly make it no longer "the perfect phone". I have not tried the phone yet so at this point I am just assuming, or speculating.

Comparing Verizon's LTE phones to att lte phones is that both are different in terms the phones. To my understanding that Verizon's phones has 2 radios one for their cdma aka 3G network and the other for lte where Att will only have one except their lte is going to be more then likely a different band but since lte is gsm, should not need another radio. So trying to compare verizon's lte to 3g switch off is not going to be the same as att lte which from what I have been reading about will be running on 700 and 1700 mhz bands which is probably why att will not have as many problems as verizon since att currently uses for their Hspa *3G* and Hspa+ *4G as marketed* runs off 850 and 1900 mhz bands, so building an lte radio to run quad band should not be an issue and then running a quad band for 2G should not be an issue in the same radio where Verizon's 3G network as they call it is cdma and their lte network should be running off of 700 mhz and 1700 mhz as well as falls back to cdma. The issue I can see happening with att is the 3G/4G/LTE back to Edge aka 2G will cause dropped calls and slow data or no data, like it does from hspa/hspa+ back to Edge. My sgs2 has been proven otherwise but it still can happen because the handoff is not perfect.
I am not sure if battery life is going to take a serious hit as I do not have lte in my area at the moment with att but what would have been nice to test the skyrocket compared to the og sgs2 if both were running the same cpu, that would be the true test. A good test would be the T-mobile sgs2 versus the skyrocket, that would be a way to see if the battery life takes a hit since both phones are similar in specs.

Just got the Skyrocket.. questions?

Just picked up my Skyrocket about an hour ago. LTE here so far seems pretty sweet. Getting around 15-20mbps download AND upload with 3 bars.
Any questions? I'll probably be making a video comparison between the International GS2 and the Skyrocket soon.

How is the text sharpness on the Skyrocket, and can you control it with one hand?
hows battery life? Does the phone switch from 3G to LTE like the GS2 switches from UMTS to HSPA when data is needed to save battery life?

But to answer your question, it stays on LTE data.. unless there's no signal. No switching between UMTS and HSPA
i got my sky rocket at 12 it is now 7pm and i still have 80% left and i have been running test and downloading and using netflix i dont see this phone as a battery hog AT ALL.
i have not seen it switch out of 4glte at all so far.
even when i have one bar, i get 9mbps when i have 3 plus bars its easily gets 20 plus mbps. and i have seen it hit 44 mbps maybe a fluke who knows though.
this thing flips through the web and runs streaming movies with ease.....sometimes i dont even see the loading bar.
im sorry, so its been confirmed that the skyrocket is snapdragon processor? Also how noticable is the display/pixels compared to the i777?

Exactly like the T-Mobile SGS2. The Skyrocket's the same phone with an LTE radio vs. DC HSPA. If you read their forum, the UI isn't as fluid and neither is the browser. There's also some issues with the display because it's the same DPI as the OSGS2 stretched over a larger screen. It also benchmarks lower than Exynos. I'm sure all the happy new Skyrocket owners will disagree. Check out the TSGS2 forum, they've had the phone longer and aren't blinded by love. The online reviews of the TSGS2 frequently compare it to the ISGS2 so you may want to check a few of those out also as they've noted the performance difference.

I wont disagree but I will say I couldn't care less if it doesn't bench as high. This device is well beyond anything else I've used and still exceeds 90% of what's out there imo. I'm fine with that and I love the larger size.
I've yet to see any lag or sluggish-ness in any app so it all appears equal to me.

You will get no useful data by asking that question here. Instead, look for reviews directly comparing the reception of devices in a controlled environment using a Femtocell.

Really, people can't give their own assessment of the signal strength they get? I'd find that more useful, getting input from people's everyday use then a test. It's like benchmarks. Actual day to day use is much more relevan than a test.

Yup, that's true. I've noticed that as well. I have the LGOG while there's 3 GS3 in the family. The GS3 holds onto the 4G LTE connection much better while LGOG drops it. It also doesn't reconnect quickly; I've had to toggle airplane mode so that I can reconnect to 4G LTE. I shouldn't have to do that. If the service it available, it should stay connected.
My LGOG doesn't connect to the 4G towers that are in Baltimore City (yes, I do have it set for 4G/3G), I have updated the profile and PRL multiple times, toggled airplane mode on and off multiple times and it stays on a 3G data connection, sometimes the 3G connection is so slow downloads and uploads take a long time. I'm hoping under SoftBank's ownership, SoftBank can vastly improve Sprint's 3G and 4G networks before the G2 comes out. I would love to switch from the OG to the G2 and have better 3G and 4G network performance than what Sprint currently has.
I'm happy with Sprint's new Unlimited Guarantee for Life but would like to see faster and more reliable data speeds on the 3G and 4G networks.
Thanks for the replies. If GS3 have better data connection than LGOG then I may steer clear of it and possibly get the Moto X Developer Edition on VZW.

Good luck with the x man.

Really, people can't give their own assessment of the signal strength they get? I'd find that more useful, getting input from people's everyday use then a test. It's like benchmarks. Actual day to day use is much more relevan than a test.

People can, and have, but at best you're getting limited sample size in unrelated markets to your own with wiggle room for signal attenuation depending on the person's grip, weather conditions, or the structure they're residing in. In short: just about as useful as testimonials for homeopathic remedies.
At worst, you're dealing with different phones reporting different bars for the same signal strength with the potential for different carriers, different protocols (Wimax/LTE/HSPA+), different modem drivers, faulty 3G/4G handoffs in addition to everything I listed previously.
I really hope they decide to throw the G the 4.2 rom thats running on the G2, the features looks pretty nice. The phone itself looks pretty sweet, I like the idea of having the volume buttons on the back. I wonder if LG has improved the camera on the G2?

Just got this phone last week because my s3 died. The s3 always stayed on 4g lte everywhere i went in town. This phone goes from 3g to 4g if i go from room to room in my house. It's. Very annoying but i have 14 days to trade this phone back in. I really like this phone over the s3 but the reception it's not on point like the s3. That's just my experience so far.

No, me thinks. Some people live under the cell and have upper quality signal 100% of time and can't tell and difference and could care less if its Moto or Coolpad
Others live in sorts of suburbs, farms, countryside and their signal is poor no matter if it Moto or LG or Nokia.

Can't find ones. Could point me to test of Moto Atrix HD vs LG Optimus G?

Well the LG G2 is officially announced and LG has announced that the G2 is coming to Sprint.

Official G2 specs: http://www.engadget.com/2013/08/07/lg-g2-officially-announced/
The specs sounds quite amazing for the follow up to the Optimus G and I'm glad Sprint will be selling the G2.

All 4 major US carriers will be carrying the G2 when it hits the States though i don't know if anyone has listed a specific date. (most seem to think early September so that it is top of the heap for a while being king fish with the Snapdragon 800)
My only concern so far is this: I like to run occasionally and I wear my phone in one of those sports arm bands... if the combo power/volume buttons are on the back, won't they be pressed against my arm and therefor prone to accidental presses? They aren't exactly flush with the back of the phone.

The volume buttons need to be pressed pretty firmly as I understood it, and the Power button is surrounded on the sides, thats how it will not be pushed down on a table etc. Even so, I bet it would be easier to accidently push the buttons when they are on the sides of the phone.

I have a question for LG Optimus G owners.
How are the radios in the LG phones? Its seems everyone agrees that Motorola are the best. my HD gets a lot better reception than my Samsung's got. How would you guys rate LG's reception?

The radio wasn't -bad-, but Motorola is certainly far better. The trick was to disable scanning for LTE (CDMA only mode), really gave a good boost to the OG's signal and battery, might I add. Since I don't currently live in a 4g area, I had no use for LTE

Well, Verizon and At&t are getting theirs Sept 12th & 13th. Let's hope Sprint's and T-Mobiles version isn't too far behind.

From what I hear the original LG Optimus G had a great radio. 3G performance was of the top devices on Sprint while the 4G ranked just a bit behind GS3. We'll see how this device goes. Motorola is really good with EvDo technology and owned a lot of Sprints legacy equipment on the cell towers. I still haven't seen any device out perform Motorola's Photon in terms of network performance.

Verizon LG G3 switching to 3G

Noticed for the last couple of days that the phone will switch to 3G when I know there is an LTE connection. Switching it into Airplane Mode and back kicks in LTE again. This happens frequently. I know there aren't many Verizon G3 users yet but I'm curious if anyone else is having this problem.
Could you post a picture of your back cover? I know people are wondering if it has Qi charging or not.

In regards to the 3G issue, you can try updating the PRL and see if that fixes the problem. I have similar issues with other devices. It deals with the SNR on the device. Most of the time the LTE signal is far lower than the 3G so it will switch.

What is that white looking thing under the two NFC contacts? is that metal or just something on the case?
Basically, does QI work out of the box?

I have two QI Nokia Chargers are home and it won't charge on either. No idea what the white thing is.
So 4G LTE is not good on this device Alla note 3

Let's stay positive here lol..
This has been discussed with other phones. When the phone is performing actual phone operations (calls, texts, and other such communications), it is using 3G. Some manufacturers actually make it indicate this is happening with the switch back and forth. I've seen phones updated so it no longer does this because people assume it's a problem with the phone's reception.

Are you using VZW or AT&T? (your user info states AT&T). Most AT&T areas other than major cities and suburbs is not a 4g LTE connection, its HSPA, so your spectrum for your area may not be as strong. Secondly going to your local brick and mortar store and getting a new SIM is always a good starting point and one of the easiest possible fixes.
I'm using Verizon. My profile hasn't been updated.

Oh Boy
I have noticed this happening very often Im in the same office where I used all my LTE Verizon phones in the same office and never had this problem of signal switching to 3G. Not good.
Update: I've noticed that if I switch from Global to CDMA LTE the 4G lte signal stays.. I'll keep my fingers crossed and update.

I did that also, ended up doing it again. I returned my LG G3 and return to the HTC One M8. I'll miss the G3 camera but the lag really bothered me.

Status bar drop down lag, swiping lag, recents lag. I don't mean data connection, LTE speed, just talking about how slow the UI feels.
I'm too impatient to wait for the bootloader unlock. Once it gets unlocked I might come back, but i'm used to the lag free HTC One m8.

There must be an issue with a certain batch or something, I really have zero lag.
I have this issue as well, phone just randomly drops to 3g when I pull it out of my pocket. S5 right beside it, stays on 4g

This is happening to me too and is incredibly frustrating. I only got the G3 because my Moto X was destroyed by a roller coaster, but in areas where my Moto X easily kept 4G my G3 keeps dropping down to 3G, forcing me to fix it by activating airplane mode. I'm wondering if I should return it for a new one, or if this is a software issue that is affecting all phones. I have 13 days left to decide, but if this is affecting a wide range of users I may pick a different phone.
