This is from the Omega thread OP..
1. Make sure to make and keep in a safe place an efs backup - nadroid backup - titanium backup - etc, in case you ever need to restore!
2. With the new firmware from Samsung for the S3 they have changed some security code that will disable the use of older modems, the new update changes the EFS partition which makes it impossible for an older modem being use without upsetting your IMEI (No Phone Signal), please make sure you do have a backup of your EFS in a safe place before you flash to the latest Omega ROM.
This is what Samsung has done, and it seems that its being done to all the new Modems on all the high end devices.
More info
3. Flash with No Full Wipe only from v43.x and previous Omega 4.1.2 versions - if

[Q] efs and imei - all roms?

Hi
Just wondered about this efs and imei trouble, does this concern all newer (or older) roms? I've got ultimarom v12 on my international s3 going good, but wonder about changing to the newest ultimarom but then I read about problems with imei.
Is this something new you have to do with all roms now?

EFS and IMEI problems since day one especially for noobs who have not read the basic faqs and guides and have no EFS backup .
Current released firmware Samsung have changed the EFS Folder .

I have rooted and installed ultimarom without any problems. was I just lucky then? Do you have to take backup of efs folder every time? It's not good enough with backup of rom when you flash a new rom?

As written in the guides, you should make a backup of your efs at the very beginning one time and keep it somewhere safe. Without imei and efs backup otherwise you have to go back to Samsung...

How to downgrade 4.2.2>4.1.2 safely?

I have searched and think I know what I'm doing, but I wonder if some kind soul could confirm what I think, before I eff my phone up?
I'm currently running a 4.2.2 Samsung ROM (Archidroid) but I'm not happy with the lag. I want to go back to a 4.1.2 ROM.
Am I correct in thinking that I can just flash the new ROM and then restore my EFS backup, and I won't have a problem with losing my IMEI/phone going into factory mode, etc? My EFS backup was done when I was on a 4.1 ROM. Or do I need to restore EFS before flashing the new ROM?
Thanking you!

just back up efs every time. be sure> flashing firmwares based on MG, changes efs format to a new one. after that if you wanna flash a firmware based on previous releases(to XXEMG4), you will be facing network problems like no data connection, no calls, no text messages etc., so once you flash a firmware i.e released after MG4, be sure the next custom rom/ stock f/w you flash is newer to it. good luck
Can I not flash an older firmware safely by restoring my EFS? Or is it risky?

Yeah thanks, I've read that more than once:
If you have ever flashed XXEMG* (or newer) ROM, to keep your IMEI working, you must:
1. Stay with the EFS v2 basebands (MG* or newer). You may flash other ROMs but must return to the MG* (or newer) baseband
2. Restore your EFS backup (taken before XXEMG* or newer ROM install) to use older (EFS v1) basebands. EFS backup must be an EFSv1 backup to use an EFS v1 baseband
3. If the above don't work, consider sending for repair...
This is the part I am worried about.

that's what exactly i was trying to tell you. XXEMG4 f/w is some what problematic but the f/w-s released after that are good enough. once you flash any of these f/w-s, back up your efs for sure.
:good:
Yes, but I want to go back to a ROM with an earlier baseband than EMG4, so I can use a custom kernel. The performance on later ROMs with the standard kernel (which is all you can use at the moment) is not satisfactory.
So my question is, in order to go back to a ROM based on firmware earlier than EMG4, can it be done SAFELY? If so, do I need to restore my EFS backup before I flash the ROM or afterwards? Or, if it's not safe then what should I do to minimise my chances of messing my phone up?

Try different 4.1.2 stock roms prior to 'MG' series. Make a clean installation.
As you were on 4.2.2, you were probably not on efs v2. Take backup of efs.

how to restore to 4.1.2??
I have installed 4.4.2 AOKP firmware on S3 GT I9300. I have backup of previous version 4.1.2 through CWM backup. Now i am trying to restore 4.1.2 backup through CWM but unable to do. I have tried a lot but can't restore previous.
Plz anybody help me resolving this issue. how to restore my previous version 4.1.2 from 4.2.2 with the existing backup?

[Q] efs backup/restore and safe rom change

Hi all, I know that i have to backup my EFS in order to change ROM's (I already have it backed up), but my question is, will efs folder be corrupt if i change only 4.1.2 ROM's, or is it just due to downgrade from 4.3 to 4.x.x.
I had my phone service twice because my efs was corrupt, and yes, i have restored my valid and good efs, when the signal was working, but it didn't help.
So I am just asking will i break my efs with changing from for ex. stock 4.1.2 to some custom 4.1.2 rom?
Also, I can't backup my efs via EFS professional, it cannot create the final step creating .tar file, I did efs backup with k-tool but when i restored my valid efs it was also no signal problem. Everything went good with backing up to PC.
Yes, I read other threads, but I am just asking for a direct opinion.
Thx in front.
Direct opinion is read the efs 'know this stuff' sticky -tells you everything you need to know.

Ok, so, if I am on XXEMG4 firmware i must stick to MG based basebands/firmwares in order for my efs to work, right?
XXEMG4 or later, any baseband/firmware after this will work with efs v2

[Q] I9300XXELLA downgrade and other questions

Hi everyone,
Before I flash a custom rom, I would like to know the answer to some questions I have.
This is the situation: I have an international galaxy s3, I9300XXELLA, with stock rom and android 4.1.2 and I'm interested in flashing the latest cyanogenmod 11 milestone.
I would make a nandroid backup first, so will I be able to just flash my nandroid of version 4.1.2 and downgrade from android version 4.4.2 to 4.1.2?
Also, if I make a nandroid of cyanogenmod 11, will I be able to just switch between the two roms like it's nothing?
Sorry if my questions are noob, but I've tried to downgrade before and I got stuck in a bootloop, I don't want to get this problem again..
And yes, I've searched google.
Any help is greatly appreciated!

The above post is absolutely wrong. Custom ROMS including CM never include a modem in the RO
Wrong wrong wrong custom roms may and indeed do include a modem or even a choice of modems . Fairly obvious from reading rom descriptions .Modem: BUUGMJ3 Modem: XXUGMK6
Modem:
- XXEMG4
- BUUGMJ3
- XXUGMJ9
- XXUGMK6
- DDUGMK1

Okay I've read the topic about efs and IMEI, but I'm not sure if I understand everything correctly
Please correct me if I'm wrong and feel free to give extra information, this is what I think I understand:
Once I flash a rom that was made after the efs format change, I can't go back to a previous version of my modem on that rom.
If I make an efs backup with CWM, I CAN restore it only if I go back to my stock android 4.1.2 (?)
But do I need to restore my efs backup on my new rom? I thought that wasn't necessary..
And another thing, I already succesfully installed a PA version AFTER the format change (I think android 4.3), and was able to go back to stock 4.1.2.. Got a bootloop but was able to fix that in recovery. The stock rom still works, never had problems with the modem what so ever, the only thing I did was restore my nandroid backup of 4.1.2, fixed the bootloop in recovery, and got a working, factory resetted 4.1.2...
So if I flash CM11, will I be able to go back to stock if I use a nandroid (and efs) backup?
Can someone give me a step by step tutorial please? (I just want to know what I have to do)

Thanks, so I don't have to worry about the modems or the efs? Even though my build version is from before MG2?
So for switching to CM and back to stock, I should do:
- make a titanium backup of apps
- make nandroid backup of 4.1.2
- factory reset/wipe cache/wipe dalvik cache
- flash CM
- factory reset/wipe cache/wipe dalvik cache
- (test CM rom, put on some apps ect.)
- make nandroid backup of 4.4.2
- factory reset/wipe cache/wipe dalvik cache
- flash nandroid of 4.1.2
- factory reset/wipe cache/wipe dalvik cache
- reboot
- restore apps with titanium backup
Will this work?
Thanks everyone, any help is welcome

Yes you do have to worry about efs if you do not backup your efs you may have problems maybe not today or in a week or month but if you ever corrupt your efs by flashing roms and you do not have a backup you will have big problems!....First rule when flashing roms backup efs!
Second rule save a backup not on your phone .
