My proximity sensor seemed to quit working. On beans 20. Has been working great. Accidentally dropped my phone and made a few calls to realize proximity wasn't working. Is there a way to test the proximity sensor before I go drop coin on a new note 2?

I also have zero red light where the proximity sensor is

Try installing CPU-Z. It lets you look at all the sensor readouts in realtime. Once you are on the page with the proximity sensor listed, just put your hand over it. You can even try moving your hand closer and further away. If the value for the proximity sensor changes while you are doing this, then you know it is still functional.
Tried cpu-z and it was not functional at all. Did a battery pull and on the 4 battery pull it kicked on. Weird

Easy FIX!!!!!
I took a can of compressed air and blew it through the top earpiece grill a few times and Voila, it works great now!!
I actually used a Old perfume can which perfume was over and it was only pressing Gas OFF!!
I noticed mine wasn't working earlier today. I decided to go into TWRP and wipe cache, dalvik, and fix permissions. Not sure if that helped, or if it was just the reboot, but mine started working again. Just thought I would mention this in case it helps.

So since I've moved to CM7 I keep hanging up on people when I am trying to hold my phone between my ear and shoulder because my jaw bone hits the end button. I don't recall this happening ever with Blur. Is there a prox sensor that is supposed to disable the phone when it's up against your face? Where is this setting in CM7 or is it just an issue of buttons being in slightly different places w/ CM7 than with stock? If so, is there a phone replacement app that anyone could suggest?
Have you tried turning the screen off (via the power button) before holding it to your face? That was something I desperately wished I could do on my old Moment, because its proximity sensor sucked, but the power button served double duty as the end call button.
Interesting idea. I didn't consider trying that. I also noticed under Call Settings an option "always use proximity sensor" which I enabled and will try. Maybe my phone thinks it's horizontal when I hold it that way.
It is a vertical horizontal thing I believe. Phone needs to be pretty much vertical for the proximity sensor to come on. You can test this in a dark room. Call a number and watch the sensor illuminate. It should look like a red dot near the earpiece. Then move it towards horizontal. You should see it cut off.
Sent from my MoPho. All typos are the phones fault.
ypu may need to do another fresh clean install. completely wipe everything then flash the rom again?
The "always use proximity sensor " setting seems to have fixed it. I must have had my too horizontal.

I was just going to mention that. I found the setting while tooling around in the cm7 settings. Glad you got it fixed.

will give that a try. im having same issue on cm7.2
Right after I replaced the rear camera in my phone it seems like the proximity sensor died as when I try to call the screen immediately turns off and locks until the call has ended.
Proximity sensor finder indicates that there is an object 3cm away but there is nothing actually there and the indicator is just stuck on 3cm.
What should I do?
I'm on cm9 btw.
Bump
Same issue
I have my stock camera and run CM9 AOKP, and I have similar issues with the proximity sensor. I read somewhere that it was an issue with CM in general and always discounted it as such. I did set up volume rocker wake and use that to wake the screen on call.
Do you use facelock? Try disabling it. Its a well known bug in CM9 that effecting proximity sensor...

Using the volume buttons doesn't wake the phone.
Note sure what facelock is.
Thanks for the answers.
my wifes proximity sensor started acting up along with many other problems. this all happened right after the last OTA update. I sent it in to moto for repair. I was suprized i didnt need a reciept. I bought it on cl used. went to motos site and they showed me how to check if warranty was still good
Phone was imported so no warranty is available.

Ok, I figured and putting the proximity sensor really close to a light source makes the screen wakes.
Also, using proximity sensor finder I did see that the proximity sensor responds when putting it really close to the light source.
It seems that while replacing the back camera, the rubber cover of the proximity sensor fell off. Is there any way I can replace it or improvise something that might suite?
Thanks.
Please check your note 3's b4 its to late!! mines had a dead proximity sensor and i had to take it back to swap out today!!..CHECK YOURS!!

The problem is that the screen will not turn back on when the phone is pulled away from your face.

yea..
I believe the kinda/sorta "disclaimer" says that the proximity sensor works while the phone is in use (making a call).

I dont know if its just sprint phones but i assume most Note 3's will experience this issue. Something about the sensors not reading accurately. When i clean the sensor area with a cloth it works correctly. Hold the phone to my ear for a few minutes and it stops working. Clean the sensor area while still on the call and it will start back working... Issue probably started day one but just now realizing its a issue.
I had issues with this as well, the screen wouldn't turn off during a call, but turned out to be my screen protector. Pulled it off and works perfect now. Cheers!
Returned mine yesterday with a little headache as the rep i first spoke to decided to play with my phone vs doing a exchange. Manager sorted it all out and gave me a new phone. Also knox was tripped but i don't think they care. Dont think im going to root again till KNOX is out the way.
The sensor works like it is suppose to now. Funny story is that the sensor tried to act right at the sprint store. They have spot lights so the sensor was reading correctly. Explained to them i didnt walk around under spot lights they agreed and did the exchange.
So, I had this issue on my phone. Tried a bunch of stuff. The fix for me: can of compressed air targeted into the earpiece. Immediately solved and perfect again.

Worked for me for about 5 min on my old note 3. Also wiping the screen were the sensor is works. Of the screen cuts off and you wipe that area with a microfiber cloth the screen comes back on. Lol

Will report back if problems return. Hoping for the best I already tripped knox.
Hello everyone. I found the cause of this I hope. The main culprit is hardware. 1st I will tell solution for this problem. Just push hard the earpiece chrome grill inside with ur nails and the proximity sensor will work properly. problem is when we use phone and it gets heated at top then the glue which is holding earpiece grill will loose itself. its hardware problem and eventually many note3 users will face this. im using exynos note3.

You can also get a micro fiber cloth a wipe the sensor area. And the light will cut back on. Before returning the defective one i did that a few times. Never even touched the ear speaker grill.
So once you have the phone to your ear and it cuts off....Wipe just the sensor are with the micro fiber cloth. The screen will come back on. It will happen again the next time you use the phone but i am just saying its not the ear speaker.

Thanks Brian! That did the trick!
My proximity sensor will not turn on the screen once I removed from my ear. I've tried multiple roms, but the issue still remains. Currently, I am on Vison X NH7.
It has to do with dust on the sensor. Same thing was happening to mine. Once I opened it up cleaned the sensor everything was back to normal.

I noted each time I make a call, the display immediately turned black. It auto turn black without me even taking up the hone up to my ears. I needed to press the power switch to have the display lit up again. Is this a proximity sensor defect ??

Yea I'm dealing with the same issue on my at&t model, it's definitely a proximity sensor issue. Also, I find that the proximity sensor functions relatively OK outside of the phone app when I'm on a call in terms of lighting of fading to black...I haven't found a fix yet, hopefully it's a software issue though somethings telling my it's not... Just another defect in a long line of LG phones as of late

I have a same issue but clean the proximity sensor and it will work. The proximity sensor is next to the speaker. Clean with your t-shirt or jeans.

I've cleaned it several times to no avail
I have noticed occasional "quirkiness" while in the phone app, but not to the point of requiring a battery pull. Example, connected via Bluetooth, while plugged to a charger in a call, no way to wake the phone without pulling the charger.

Thank you. Thank you. Your proposed solution works very well. Now no more this problem. Had never thought the sensor could be dirty or blocked over time. I had the phone only about 2 months
Problem update
Okay, I've found new info on the proximity sensor problem. Firstly, I noticed that my proximity sensor still works with the second screen, if I cover it up when my screen is off it goes black and comes back on when I remove my finger. Secondly, if I was on the phone but not actually in the phone app it would behave normally sometimes. Now today I found out that when I'm in the phone app, if I'm talking on the phone through the speaker the screen does not go black, as soon as I take it off speaker, the screen goes immediately blank. Still have not found a fix, but just more info that may help define what the actual problem is.
anyone have any update on this? this issue seems to be getting worse for me
Same issue, drives me nuts. This phone is a disappointment to me overall. Have an S7 on pre-order with Verizon. Can't wait to get my hands on it!
Had same issue just happen on the AT&T LG Escape 2. (Yes I know its a year since this thread was started)
It was the proximity sensor but the "T-shirt wipe" method didn't work for me.
What I did realize there was some gunk on the sensor, and I used a cotton swab (Q-tip) with alcohol and rubbed it till it was visibly clear of gunk. Now it works fine again..
