Hi there,
problem as follows: I got a I9300 (pre-rootet and with some kind of chinese custom rom based on 4.0.4). I did not put in my simcard, but flashed it straight away with a 4.1.1 custom rom, and did the efs backup.
However, once I put in my simcard it shows no service. I have tried several roms and just restored stock recovery and stock firmware 4.1.1 but nothing has changed.
i have checked this threat http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1080076 and others, but still my phone is not having service.
I don't think that my efs partition is corrupted since when I type in those keycodes it still shows my imei. also I did a restore of my backed up efs.
Does anyone have any ideas?
Thanks!

It looks like what I am looking for. However, I cannot find the files they are using
I'll keep looking... thanks
Update:
I have asked the person who gave the phone to me, and apparently it was a parallel import to china. However, I have no idea where it is from originally.
I have tried flashing a couple of different stock roms, but without success.
I have also tried to flash the chinese rom from the suggested thread, but it keeps failing when it comes to the part where it wants to install the modem.
Does anyone have an idea how to find out the origin of the phone?
I have tried Kies, entering the model number and serial, but kies does not accept the serial.
My last hope would be that I can find out which market it is from, then flash back the original stock firmware?
Any other ideas why it might show no service?
IMEI is shown, so I think efs partiotion should be still ok, right?
I'd really appreciate any help and suggestions. I am out of ideas...
Thanks
There is some issue with your efs or modem.
having imei does not confirm that efs folder is intact.
No service .
Usual is .
Wrong IMEI .
No Modem /wrong modem .
Wrong CSC / network connections no tet up .
Sim faulty .
Phone blocked due to theft .
Wrong firmware on phone .

IMEI is shown as on sticker.
I have no idea where the phone is originally from - I have contacted Samsung but they were not willing to help- they say it has not been bought in NZ so they cannot help me here. Hence I dont know which modem would be the correct one. I have tried a couple of different ones, but none seems to be working.
Sim is ok, also tried like 5 other sim cards.

That's what I read in other forums now as well.
The error seems to be common after unlocking with boxes.
So I suspect that someone unlocked the phone, which messed up the efs folder. The backup I made when I received phone, must already be faulty.
I also noticed that the SN in the phone settings shows up as a different number than the one on the sticker.
I guess I have to find someone with those 'boxes" who knows what he is doing Any suggestions for Auckland, NZ?
I have been to like 5 shops but noone could help so far... THANKS
Have you tried following the steps in this thread to identify the original firmware?

Thanks, I had tried that. Kies doesn't recognize the SN. Strangely enough SN in settings and SN on sticker are not the same. I really think seller screwed with the efs partition.
Was it working with the original Rom?
From my reading of your posts you have not changed the modem or csc that it came with?
Perhaps if you tried a 4.0.4 Rom again you might have some luck given it was probably working when you received it.
The different serial numbers are suspicious though. Presumably the one on the sticker is the correct one. Would Samsung not be able to identify the phone by the SN and tell you what the original firmware is?

When I received the phone it was not working. Hence I installed stock rom. I also tried flashing different modems, but nothing helped.
I contacted Samsung service and they said they wouldn't be able to help me because I did not purchase the phone in the country where I live in, and also cannot give me any information about where the phone was originally from.
It possible that is an imei block. If the phone is sold with a subscription and the owner sell it to an other prson without paying anymore the taxes for the phone the operator is able to block your phone using the imei.

As bought origins unknown .
Non working may be faulty and not fixable .
May have been as said blocked as its a stolen phone .
If it is I9300 then i would be flashing stock ICS firmware with modem and CSC for the country/network you are trying to use the phone on .At least then after a successful flash their can only be two reasons for not working phone hardware or IMEI .

IMEI is ok. I also called my network provider to check if IMEI is blacklisted in my country, but say also say it's not blacklisted.
Someone told me (and I also read it on other forums) that this often happens after unlocks, which are actually not successfully finished.
I will meet him tomorrow and will post an update.
Thanks for the suggestions and help so far.
Ok last update:
Indeed the phone is unlocked and something went wrong with it. Apparently, it is a common thing that the IMEI changes during unlock and then has to be restored, which often causes that problem.
The guy who helped me got it fixed. Only problem is now that I cannot flash the modem file. So have to stick with roms which come without modem. Also it seems that some are incompatible with the 'old'modem
Right now I am using AOKP and everything is working.
Thanks again for all the help and suggestions!

hi can someone close this thread issue has been sorted flashed ee stock rom and got imei back lol
thanks though
wait a minute thats not a good sign, So your saying that you lost your Imei and that QCN backup did not work?
The only thing that worked was flashing a stock rom back... this is not in the guide lol HMMmmmmm
I am just thinking why that QPST tool would not work when it should of or shouldnt it, did you use it correctly??? Can you try do the same thing as you did before and see if it you are able to restore it over your imei now? If it works now then maybe it wont work if theres no IMEI when thats the time we really need it to work.....Maybe Lyriquidperfection can comment?
ChwadKs can you try that QPST tool again and do EXACTLY what you did when you lost your imei. If it doesnt work AGAIN then thats a good sign for us as then it must be something wrong on your end or Hopefully you did it wrong which is why it didnt work. But if you do the exact same thing again but this time it works, then it may be a bad sign for us

Messing up partitions can cause adverse effects like phone not being detected in QPST. Don't worry backups do work.

Don't get too excited about ROMS. It's not just partition locations to think about but the hardware differences such as the extra ram and the Qualcomm modem.

Try looking at the RIL. I9300 uses the Samsung RIL but the I9305 uses the Qualcomm RIL. So you will need to alter the Rom to reflect this and you will get baseband back!

hey guys,
sorry to hijack the thread. I have a i9300 with the exynos processor so all the qualcomm leg works to restore the imei are a no go for me.
Is there a way I could fix it? (imei unknown)
I did the same. Thinking I was being smart and not looking into it properly flashed with i9300 and not i9305 and now I have no IMEI. Searched everywhere and cant find a solution. If any one can help out with a solution, I would greatly appreciate it.
I have re-flashed several times, back to original and back to root and still null IMEI.

...my wife had this problem last week. Phone was saying that it was not registered on Network. Looked around on the net, checked settings on phone and found that if you turn the phone off for a few minutes and back on, it re-registered to the network. Very basic, don't know why it did it, but it's now OK

About the other solution, i'm going to try it but i don't think it will work for me..
Is there a final solution? It is impossible that we can't solve the problem..
Thank you all..

This worked for me after flashing S4 Revolution ROM V5, thank you i've got my IMEI back.
First of all, this is not my first time flashing a custom rom. I've been using different roms for months. Before this tragedy I was using MIUI as my primary rom and CM10.2 temasek's UNOFFICIAL Build - V10 as my secondary rom with Googy-Max Kernel 1.6.7 installed. Everything works perfectly fine. Yesterday I decided to install Resurrection Remix® v4.0.6 as my secondary rom. During the installation the installer asked me to choose one modem. And I randomly chose one of them. After that I rebooted my phone into secondary rom, but there was only black screen. Then I took out the battery, reboot it into my primary rom. UNFORTUNATELY, THE MOBILE SIGNAL WAS GONE. I tried to flash different modem/baseband and tried everything I can find on the internet. Now the signal shows" Emergency Call Only". I used Odin to restore my phone to stock rom, everything on my internal storage is gone BUT THE SIGNAL IS STILL "Emergency Call Only". The SN is normal (not all 00000000) but imei is wrong. Can someone tell me what the f*** is happening to my phone? Thank you so much! :crying::crying::crying::crying:
Update: I sent my phone to Samsung care. And they said some sort of chip on my phone is broken. And they charge me 200 dollar for replacement! Hell no! Any ideas??

The stupid thing is I didn't know efs before this. And there is a backup. But nothing happened after I restored it. Another thing is the Titanium Backup on my phone became a free version. It should be a premium one. Does that mean I lost my efs? Then how come I still got the correct IMEI and SN?

Okay..now I realize that my IMEI has been changed to 00499010640000 which is different from my sticker. But the S/N are the same. Is it fixable?

That's generic IMEI. Do you have EFS folder backup ?
Read this : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2393289
If not reset flash counter flash stock firmware and visit service centre

Man I sent my phone to Samsung care. And they are charging me 200 dollar to replace some sort of chip on my phone... Is that really necessary??

Ouch...
If you didn't have efs backup then visit to service centre was 'a must' move.. Although I have no idea how much they charge , 200 $ kinda seems too much /// @rootSU should know better

I would expect pocket change, £20
I bought my S3 with Cyanogenmod 10.2 on it. Everything working.
I backed up EFS and downgraded to 4.1.2. No signal. "Not registered on network". All providers show up, I get bars, my IMEI is a valid one but not the same as the one under battery, same goes for the serial number.
I restored EFS, same thing. I reverted to Cyanogenmod 10.2, same thing. I've tried everything.
What can I do?
Is the imei starting 0049? What baseband do you have now?
Did you read the imei / efs thread in general > sticky roll-up thread?

No, the IMEI looks like a legit IMEI starting in 3 and ending in 4. I'll get the phone to check the baseband now.
I've read everything I could find. I've been searching the internet too for about 4 days, 5 hours a day lol
EDIT: XXEMG4 is my baseband
If the imei is a standard format but not matching - something has happened. Id get that looked at professionally

Yep, its standard format and so is the serial. But both differ from the numbers under the battery.
Im thinking some hex codes must have been changed in the restoration of the EFS??
Probably the standard generic IMEI gone wrong number .

Unlikely. Do you know 100% it used to match or have you only just noticed after the restore?
Looks to me like a motherboard has been replaced but perhaps with a second hand one.
Anyway they're supposed to match so i'd:
1) confirm there's nothing dodgy / reported stolen etc with original imei
2) if not, get a repair centre to set the details as they should be if it is within their legal power

hex compare nv_data.bin from back up and current from phone since it has fix 2mb size. if there are minor two three bytes of difference you can manually patch bytes and try.
