Yes or No and why. I'm on the fence right now and really wanna know what it's like walking, sitting down and operating a huge phone.
If you can operate a Note 2 you can operate this phone. It is a bit hard to use with one hand but you can with some getting used to it
I would trade 1 handed use for screen any day. How often are you stuck with just 1 hand to do everything? 3% of the time maybe?
I am very comfortable using the phone. I thought size might be a factor but it's not. It is a pleasure to use.
I would imagine using it as a small tablet is comfortable, but are you guys using it as a phone by itself? As in holding it up to your head? Or do you pair a bluetooth device to make calls?

Yes, I use it as a phone holding it to my head. I bought a bluetooth device thinking I would use that as a handset but it remains unused.
Are there any issues with the other side hearing you? While on my note 2, if I'm not talking in normal/loud voice, the other person may complain they can't hear me very well (or maybe it's just this particular restaurant in specific). Since the XZU is so long, it'll go WAY past where your mouth is.

No complaints as of yet.
I don't have the largest hands and I can type in landscape with very little effort. It is hefty, but since it's so slim, you don't really notice. I've made a few phone calls and I'll admit, it looks strange, but doesn't feel unnatural.

No issue for me, if still comfortable for me.
I can make calls with it no problem. No need for a bluetooth device at all unless you want one.
My biggest concern actually is using the phone as a music player. The audio jack is on thw side so it might be too tight on the pants. And while driving, it might be impossible to switch between tracks with one hand lol
I wish android implemented swipe gestures on the screen to wakeup. Its almost effortless and is an elegant solution especially if your phone is idle on a table top

Coming from iPhone 5, I need some adjustment to typing on this device. However, browsing websites and reading articles from Current and Buzzfeed is great, it has that book-reading feel to it. In fact, the big ass screen makes it a pleasure.
It's easy to hold with one hand but making phone calls made me feel awkward, and a little bit embarassed.
I feel like I made the right choice to return to android with this device. I wish it has tablet capacity battery though.

The audio jack on the side is ridiculous - sony did this on XSP too (sony seems to be good at spoiling decent devices ), especially on a "smartphone" this big :silly:
I'm also getting an XZU in couple of weeks, and if using audio cable while the phone is in my pocket proved impossible, I think the workaround is using the wireless bluetooth.. Sounds like it defeat the purpose of a fully-waterproofed audio jack, but some compromise must be made, huh
First look I worry about the size, now I love the size. Inside my pocket no problem for walk, sit and run. I put my note 2 and zu together with my jean pocket or short paint is ok. No doubt.
One hand operate no problem for me. Because I m the big hand.
When incoming call also no problem, answer without bluetooth. Now I won't worry the size only how to root my device.
One more think is this device suitable for male better than female. When my wife hold it look like holding a M16.

Here's a fresh preview video from Pocket Now. The Ultra Vs the Note 2
I found the Note 2 too awkward to use so I sent it back. If I had issues with that would this device be even worse?
I don't have the ZU yet, so I can't really give you an answer, but what didn't you like about the Note 2? Was it too big?

It was partly the size but more just its general handling, reaching across the screen even though I tried clustering stuff on one side of it. I had a Galaxy Note sometime prior & I got on with that reasonable well & though the Note 2 was bigger of screen I still thought I would be OK with it.
I taking out my phone from the jeans every time I get in the car.

I never thought that I would use my phone as my primary media consumption device. I had always used my smartphones for on the go browsing but now I find myself grabbing the note without thinking even though a laptop and desktop are within arms reach. I never feel that frustration of everything being just a little bit to small to truly enjoy anymore.

This is the exact opposite of me. I have gone through 10 years of pdas and cell phones combinations looking for that one device that would cover both and give me a pc like experience. now i have it.
It is so much quicker to whip out my phone and get info while others are booting/logging into their laptops atmeetings.
Back on topic: guess it would be gaming. I'm getting older now and just don't game as much now that my kids are all pretty much grown up but playing asphalt 7 on here is a trip.

I actually prefer tapatalk to my PC now, and I do a fair amount of browsing while I watch TV. My phones have been my primary source of music playing for quite awhile, I have about 11gb of music, 32gb SD card. Surprisingly you can watch a movie on the phone pretty easily, my complaint is the lack of a front speaker, this is a glaring omission to me, they want us to use our smart phones for all kinds of media, but you have to cup your hand behind the speaker to hear it. We have front facing cameras, give me a speaker, too.

It gets warm because it is a quadcore, plus when installing a bunch of things on the phone it will heat up. The memory is nothing to worry about, Android handles memory differently than most OSes. On my One X+ the speaker is pretty loud, it could be your case muffling it.

Android uses ram in a totally different way to windows and ios. Android is designed to think as unused ram as useless ram, And it will manage background processes on it's own. A google search will provide more information on how android uses ram.

One question on bluetooth phoning: Am I the only one with the problem that when I enter my car, leave the phone in my pocket (why should I take it out?), dial via my car's quick button that the phone/Android unlocks in my pocket?? Had the same problem with my DHD... Is there no way to learn my phone to leave the screen off&locked when dialed via BT?

I came over from a galaxy s3 which I actually thought was about the perfect size for a phone. I thought I would try the note 2 out just to see if you know I would be able to use some of the extra features such as the pan and maybe some other things. I'm having trouble with the size. I'm not sure I am going to be able to work with this. The Galaxy s3 I could work 1 handed but I am struggling using the note 2 1 handed.
I am just curious if it is just that I am NOT used to the phone, and I will eventually figure out how to use it 1 handed. Thanks in advance for your kind response is.
Unless your name is Shaq I doubt you will ever be able to one hand this phone.
But even without being able to do full one hand operation, I am betting you will get used to the size. All things take time. Hell there was a time when I was so used to texting on my old Samsung flip phone back in 2005, that the thought of getting a touch screen keyboard based phone was just blasphemy. And of course when I did get my device, a Droid X, I was really turned off from the keyboard. I hated texting on it and it drove me nuts.
Now today, I can't imagine having a flip phone with those ugly T9 keys, or even a slider phone that has so much wasted thickness for a redundant keyboard.
You'll get used to it, sooner or later. But it grows on you.
You have to hold it differently. If your fingers are long enough, their tips can still wrap around the phone while it mostly resting on them, not your palm. This gives your thumb much more mobility. It feels weird at first but isn't uncomfortable. I cannot reach both the status bar and buttons without shifting my grip awkwardly, but I still can do that one handed.
It's been three days and I've already gotten used to it, I can't believe how small my former Razr MAXX feels in comparison. I'm 6'2 and have pretty big hands and I am able to 1 hand it in most cases, but it's more comfortable with 2.
Unless you have really small hands. you will definitely get used to it.
Im going to give it a week....right now I'm missing my sg3

That clip thing is called a fly grip I believe. Qbking77 has a YouTube video reviewing it and I think it looks pretty handy. I'm a 6 foot tall man with big hands and I'm afraid I'm going to drop the phone reaching for the notification bar while the phone is sliding in my hand. I've had a lot of different phones and this one is hands down my favorite but I do have the fear of it sliding out of my hand reaching for the notification bar to the home button (try doing that one handed... you'll see what I mean).

The moment I pulled the note 2 out of the box and put it into my hand for the first time the GS3 was dead to me. I doubt I will ever be able to use a smaller phone without a stylus. I use the stylus nonstop for work and find that I am typically using one hand to hold the phone and the other I have the stylus.
But, I am also 6' 5" and don't really have much issue holding it in one hand and using my thumb to operate it. I usually don't even have issue moving the phone slightly to be able to reach all 4 corners.
Personally when I use my wife's S3 or my old GN after having this phone they seem tiny and I can't even stand using them. People can say what they want but for me a guy with avg size hands I think this phone is perfect. The only Issue I do have is when using my left hand it is a PITA to hit the back button. Samsung should have had the whole area to the right of the home button as a contact area, so that isn't so much a size issue for me but a design issue. Either way I could never go back to a smaller phone now.
The only thing you'll have trouble getting used to are the stares. At the mall.....restaurants especially. I haven't had a quiet meal in the last week. Waitresses and patrons just walk up and say, "That is the biggest phone I have ever seen! What is it? Do you like it.....isn't it TOO big?"
I just tell them the micro radiation is off the charts....so stand back.

It's called TK2 bluetooth handset. it costs $20 on ebay ATM.
I've just bought one fron ebay. The sound quality is ok, battery life(from what te page says) is pretty good, also it rings when a call comein.
What's bad: The only ringtone it has is the famous iphone one...
I've not decided yet, if i ever saw a more ugly headset then that ... but its defniatly going for the first 3.
Beside that, why should i carry one that is as big as an iPod?

I know you can do that with the SBH52 but I'd quite like a lightweight option that you can just keep on a lanyard etc.

I use the Bluedio BD100 - http://dx.com/p/bluedio-bd100-1-0-oled-usb-bluetooth-v2-1-dialer-headset-white-3-5mm-jack-127233
A discussion around it on XDA itself - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1709473
Interesting, it has one feature that the SBH52 does not - the ability to sync the phonebook. The BD100 copies over all the phonebook entries, and allows you to scroll through and dial out from the device itself. The SBH52, from what I have read, can only redial recent calls (which even the BD100 lets you). I am surprised why Sony left out such a useful feature.
Apart from that, the BD100 has vibration and a single high-pitched ringtone (which will scare you the first time you hear it!). You cannot change it, but luckily you can turn it off. Though there is a model from Satechi that, apparently, comes with 8 ringtones.
Call quality is ok, though a bit muffled. Music quality is mediocre, especially if you are used to aptx headsets like the HS3000 from Samsung or the HTC BH S600.
I have been using it for over six months (previously with my Note 2) and have not encountered the issues others have in the XDA thread. Been stable and reliable for me.
The best part is the size and weight. Worth the price i paid.

Sure it have interesting features, but going size, weight, features and price wise you can go as well for a full phone, like a Nokia 105 with longer talking time and standby time as well as better audio quality with Nokia quality and the all for about $20.

could someone please explain to me why anyone would want a device like this?
so many nice, small, BT headsets, with great sound, and many even ring when you get a call, so why would you want something this big, ugly, with horrible sound, when a nice BT headset is so much better in every way?
thanks!

I don't think the sony sbh52 is in any way ugly. It's just like a normal Bluetooth set as it allows you to plug in headphones but it also lets you take calls without the headphone connected.
I agree some of the other units which are basically like a small phone are not by cup of tea. At that point I just as well carry a normal small phone plus a tablet lol
I agree the sony unit isnt really ugly, but a couple of the other ones I saw really were..
it just seems weird to carry "2 phones" around with you at the same time...or am I missing something?

Well I can't speak for anyone else but yes by getting the Z Ultra Im trying to combine the phone/tablet experience and only have to carry one device.
Having said that I won't mind carrying the SBH52. But the point is if I forget it I can still make calls without it. :good:
I thought that is what my mindset would be when I bought the GN2; I ended up getting a Note 8.0 a couple of months ago, which is the perfect tablet size, IMO..Can you put the sony in your pocket when you wear "normal" pants, not skinny jeans, or, will in not fit in any pants pocket? It looks narrow and long, like it would fit in loose pants pockets..

I think it will fit in normal pants pockets but definitely not skinny jeans. What I did was buy a cheep TPU case off ebay for $3 so I could check out the dimentions and try it in my pockets first
Coming from a note 2 I know what you mean. I don't have much use for a full blown tablet though and in the past I've handed down both an ipad and nexus 7 to family members. I just want a large screen mobile thats not a pain to browse or consume media on while on the move. For anything other than that, serious browsing or for real productivity I'll switch to the laptop.
Even then I find Im far more productive when trying to do real work when using a desktop PC. The laptop is a macbook pro so its no slouch, but simply being sat at a desk using a large screen monitor, full sized keyboard etc.
Anyway I got off track there a little lol.. I think the note 8 is a good size, pity they made the side bezels so big though. The phone functionality on the cellular model is sometime id like to see enabled on all tablets.
my wife has the note 10.1 tablet, which I find too big; we both had original Motorola Xooms, which were also 10 inch, and I thought was too bulky..The 8 inch tablet really hits the sweet spot, IMO..
problem is, if I get a 6.4 inch phone, and have an 8 inch tablet, are these devices too similiar too each other?
my tablet is a wifi model, but I make VOIP calls with it, and can text with it too; wifi is everywhere, and where it isnt, I just tether to my GN2, so connectivity is not an issue..
My wife is already warning me I am not getting the Sony, so, until someone is selling it here, and I can take her to a store and show her how cool it is, I have to control myself! She thought I was nuts getting a Note 1, then she wanted one; when I got a note 2, she said I was nuts again, but now she has one too, so there is definately a pattern here I can take advantage of!

Theres a big difference in screen area between 6.5" and 8" I actually wish the Ultra bezels were smaller and they had stuffed a 7" screen in there.
!! Seriously it would fit in almost the same footprint, just a couple of mm wider. The note 2 will be the superior device if you use the spen a lot for note taking etc. The Ultra note taking is nowhere near as good as on the Note 2 or Note 8, but its ok for infrequent use.
Me and the mrs both had note 2's. She smashed the screen on hers so I bought her a mega 6.3. Forward thinking so she could't moan about me buying the Ultra lol
So far I have see those problems and those make me think twice before buy it.
1- getting too hot easily. Not only when recording 4k videos some users find it getting too hot while browsing Internet. That's not acceptable. I don't want it to be blown off in my hand.
2- screen is dim. I thought that's since I watch the videos on YouTube. Other phones such as samsung s5 and HTC One m8 has got a lot brighter screen. If it is sunny you can see your phone screen that's not good for people especially in hot countries.
3- gap issues. I don't know if this is a big issue but still shouldn't be like that.
4- speakers. So people are happy some people are not. Some people are having issue with income calls they say it's not loud enough and only one speaker works.
Those are so far I can remember/told by people here. Maybe that's why it's been delayed for release who knows.
Do you guys have any other issues with the phone? Please let us know £550 for pay as you go phone is a lot of money I don't wanna regret after I buy it.

1..... All phones these days get warm when in use, id be more concerned if it wasnt heating up, as for the 4k recording it doesnt bother me too much, its not a feature ill be using anytime soon and im assuming the related software can be fine tuned and updated by sony so it doesnt strain the processor as much
2......Im in great britain so not the sunniest place but weather was quite bright over easter weekend and i had no issues seeing the screen outside
3......As long as its not affecting the water resistance, who cares. If in doubt either treat it like any other phone near water or get it tested by sony
4......Speakers im 50/50 on.... the sound is crisp and clear, just not as loud as other phones. The sound is supposed to be mono on an incoming call, it also cuts to one speaker on my blutooth speakers and on my galaxy if i have headphones in and recieve a call the right earphone cuts out

You don't care about gaps?
Yeah... we now know you...
Lol... Anyway do u think they will do a fix for the one speaker ****e...

yep id definately be concerned if it didnt heat up while im using it, just about every electrical item i own heats up when in use, if it doesnt then its probably not working properly.......
I dont mind gaps...... as long as they dont affect the waterproofing, my z2 appears to have a couple of (extremely small, less than 1mm) gaps, but im not about hide it away in shame or demand an exchange for a cosmetically perfect handset.......... unless of course they cause the phone to die a watery death, but i doubt that
and finally i'll stick with my overall opinion of the speakers, but as for the one speaker dropping out ignore anything i said, i was mistaking what you was on about with something else.... my bad lol
I have just received my z2 this morning - opened the box and found the phones back glass panel is raised above the edge of the phone in one corner by 1mm or so.. from the Power button to the bottom corner.
It spoils the whole feel of the phone as its easy to catch the glass.. I imagine its going to get damaged quickly
So I now have to contact company I got it from to arrange a swap, or send it off to Sony.. probably at my own expense.
Premium phone and price with not so premium build quality.. This should never have passed Quality Control.

give it back to place you bought. do not give a single penny for returning it. its not your fault and it is not supposed to come out from your pocket. do not get it fixed get a brand new one.
faulty phones make me think again why the z2 is postponed so many weeks ahead. there is definitely something wrong with this phone in one point. overheating, out of shape design, gaps on the top of the device, speakers etc.

Do you think they would have solved all these problems by the start of May (which is when most people get their phone)? If not then all these delays would have been a complete waste of time...

Start of may is not guaranteed for release. Some companies giving date for 24th of may. Hope everybody will be happy at the end of the day but Sony is not doing well so far. Postpone is a really bad start and faulty phones comes up after waiting months or weeks is more disappointing. If you are not ready for launch do not announce your phone.

I cannot get a decent close up using my OneX..
I'll hunt out my normal camera and see if I can get a decent close up.

Oh man there are a lot more problems than I thought. People complaning to Sony directly instead of telling people here . I think Im right with my opinion never buy a newly released phone there are always problems at some point. Wait a month or so and get them after. My wife bought newly s4 when it was out the phone was getting far too hot she was scared to use it cos it might blow off on her hand. we complained and got a brand new one which is okay. All my old iphones were the same some had sound problem some had glass problem.
It seems that Sony were in so much of a rush to assemble the phones to get them 'out there' that quality control suffered big time.
Am gonna make sure that mine is perfect before keeping it even if it means returning it time after time.
Am hoping all of these build issues are solved when its officially released in May
