[Q] EZsmartphone Invites XDA Developers Hackers - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Because I do not wish to waste time reinventing the wheel, I have searched for, and found, some references to specific device booting from the SD card in the forums. However, I wish to find out if someone here has developed generic code to do this.
I would like only 2 folders in the root of the SD Card, "current", and "backups". This will allow all non geek smartphone users to backup. restore, and select any version of the firmware to be loaded, without needing any proprietary software, simply using the "copy" command of the file manager on their PC.
As this is my first post, I cannot post a link to the EZsmartphone URL, but would like to also know if anyone here has already developed GUI concepts like Sliding Menus and MenuIndex.
I would really appreciate any feedback or help in getting an idea this simple, and this powerful, released into the wild via the XDA Developer community.

[THINK TANK - WIP] Apps2SD on Nexus with Option on Install Location

Hi all,
If you are going to say we don't need Apps2SD on the N1, please leave the thread now . (Actually, read on) There are various reasons I can think of why we need Apps2SD on the N1, and one of the biggest is actually Games. I don't really play any games to begin with, but the last I checked, some games are as large as 19MB, possibly more. Isn't it kind of crappy that the N1, the superphone, can't hold more than 10 such games?
I started this thread with the intention of gathering more information, and hopefully some coders will do it (including myself, if I've the time). Package Manager (the thing in charge of installing, if I'm not wrong), is in the AOSP, under frameworks/base. In such a case, wouldn't it be possible for some programmer to mod it such that it will ask you whether to install to (SD/Phone) before each installation process?
The other issue is, looking at current implementation of A2SD, it seems all apps on Phone are moved to the SD card partition. If we can have an implementation that allows both to co-exist, in addition to the Package Manager mod, I'd say we'll have a pretty nice implementation.
Your thoughts/findings? I may be completely off, have yet to actually look at the AOSP source.

that doesnt work on roms like the desire by modaco. app2sd doesnt work, ive tried that method and it just hangs. true there is a thread already for app2sd, but its not going anywhere in terms of the newest desire release. i know its still early, but i only had like 50mb for apps and i have over 120 apps and i didnt feel like reinstalling. someone fix it please.
Apps to SD is of course necessary. The Nexus doesn't really have that much space for apps - about 190mb which is only the same as the Hero.
I have apps 2 SD working with CM 5.0.3 from the kitchen.
its also addable to a CM rom using the how to thread.
It WAS working ok with MoDaCo ROMS but for some reason has ceased to work and causes bootloops if you bake it in - shame...
I've no coding experience, but willing to test stuff out anytime.....

i think what Wysie is trying to do is stimulate discussion about a different way to do A2SD.
He, and a lot of people believe (including myself) that running apps from the sd makes them slower, so what he wants is like WM where when you install an app it gives you an option to install it either onthe device or on the sd. So you can choose to install your most used and apps that require speed the most on your device...
And if this isnt thread development where the hell should he have posted it? It certainly is development if you ask me. he is thinking of ways to develop a better A2SD.
Seems like unionfs + some kind of app to manage which apps live where might work. This would require kernel support, however. You would set up /data/app and /data/app-private as union mounts of (say) /data/app-internal with /sdcard/app and /data/app-private-internal with /sdcard/app-private. You would then want a custom app management tool to move things to the appropriate places.

My suggestions are as follows:
Use a different mount point, not inside any of the other file systems.
Like /apps2sd, this makes it alot easier to handle in the recovery realm (which is what I care about).
As for handling the specific apps installed in either /data/app or /apps2sd I suggest we have a look at something simple. Like symlinking individual apps.
Ext filesystem is mounted on /apps2sd on boot.
New installs of apps are done in /data/app like normally. /data/app is not symlinked to the apps2sd directory like it is today.
If a user want a app to be stored on apps2sd instead of in /data/app a management app can just move the .apk from /data/app to /apps2sd and set up a symlink it up into /data/app again.
Simple demonstration:
Initial state, two apps installed normally:
/data/app:
SomeApp.apk
SomeOtherApp.apk
/apps2sd
<empty>
Now the user moves SomeApp to apps2sd:
/data/app
SomeApp.apk -> /apps2sd/SomeApp.apk (symlink)
SomeOtherApp.apk
/apps2sd
SomeApp.apk
If this is possible, i.e. making sure that Android doesn't bork on symlinked apps (can't see why it would, but best to make sure). This is clean simple way handle it. It gives more control on what apps are stored where, better handling of ext stuff in recovery.
Also writing scripts/apps to facilitate this is trivial since it's so simple.
What do you think? Want input especially from ROM makers.

Okay, that's better than my idea, assuming it works. One disadvantage is that removing the SD card breaks all the links. You could conceivably swap cards with the unionfs approach, as long as you were not using any widgets or launcher icons which rely on APKs in the SD storage, and had a way to properly unmount the disk. Might not be worth the complexity, though.
I think the biggest issue is with regards to removal of SD card. You guys have made it way more complex than I thought, thanks for enlightening/sharing !
I thought it could be as simple as simply modifying the Apps2SD script to allow apps to exist on both the sdcard and the phone, and then modifying the Package Manager to prompt the user on where to install to. Keep those thoughts/opinions coming!
If it wasn't for my school work and lousy time management i'd definitely start doing something. For now, it's good enough if all the necessary knowledge is shared here, then some dev can actually start work and put it on github or something for the rest of the community to contribute!

i believe the solution that we want isn't with the use of symlink or that sort. we should aim to find a clean, programmatic way of doing it - built to the heart of android.
any idea how android am manage the apps on the phone? is there an sqlite app db or something? how does it store the installed applications information?

Well, you have to remember that the solution should work on stuff that we do not have source access to, like people wanting to use on ported ROMs or a rooted stock ROM.
I tried to simlink apk's but for some reason it didn't work, simlink the app directory works.
I think the best way would be to add paths in the program that actually searches/launches the apps (my guess would be that's in framework.jar)
Currently it looks in /system/app, /data/app & /data/app-private there should not be any technical reason why it couldn't look in a forth directory. this way you can keep the imporant/most used apps in the flash and large/less used on the sdcard...

Again, this is the problem. A general technique suitable for XDA-type applications must require only root or changes to GPL code. You can't touch the framework, which can (and does) have proprietary branches.

i would say that we have no choice but to implement it without considering those groups. however, i do suggest that we should make the implementation compatible, just that, on modded frameworks like cyan, it works to the fullest.

Unionfs is not available for android devices without kernel sources.
Concerning ported rom, I am not sure the package installer get modified by vendors. So it may be possible to implement the changes done to aosp code using baksmali.
So my two cents are:
- modify AOSP sources to have android lookup at /sd/app for apps
- modify package installer to have it asks where to install apps
Sure the removing of sdcard problem is still there. I don't know how we can ever handle a straight manual remove of it. It implies big modifications to AOSP sources to have the system aware of missing applications that have existing home shortcuts or widgets, so it "hides" them until app is back...
Anyway we can start implementing the functionality and look after for that sdcard removal problem.
I've been thinking of doing this for a while, has any progress been made?
I like the idea of modifying pm to prompt for the install location, I was thinking of just writing an app to manage that (but probably would be a good idea to have both).
If progress has been made, great, if not, I may start a fork of CM5's vendor tree for this.

Kernel sources are the one thing you most assuredly do have on all devices, at least if they're sold where copyright law can be enforced. No one needs to risk a lawsuit by intentionally violating GPL.

Well.. it is not the case in real life.... For eg, acer Liquid kernel sources they acer provided is unusable.
Just a clue for aosp source modification:

In response to d_dan's thread I have decided to start putting together a glossary for android related terms/abbreviations. Feel free to reply with ones you would like added/modified as the list I'm beginning with is rather short. I will monitor the thread regularly and incorporate them into the original post, contributions will be duly credited.
GLOSSARY:
adb : Android Debug Bridge, a command-line application included in the SDK. Allows you to run certan commands on the phone from your computer over USB as well as pull/push files.
BART : Backup And Restore Tool, similar to Nandroid but with more customization options for advanced users.
Cook : To create a ROM for a certain device.
Emulator: A program that pretends its certain hardware/software running on another device.
Flash : To write a ROM/Radio/SPL/etc to a device.
Nandroid: A backup/restore tool that creates an image of your phone's software guts which can be reapplied if something goes wrong.
Radio : Clarification on this requested, I know it has something to do with the connectivity to your provider. WARNING: Mucking around with it can brick your phone in certain situations!
recovery: Booted into by holding the "Home" button while booting the phone, a custom recovery image allows Nandroid backups, console access, wipes and much more.
SDK : Source Developer Kit, Contains tools to create things for Android, also includes adb and an android emulator.
SPL : Secondary Program Loader, loads the android OS. WARNING!: Mucking around with it can brick your phone in certain situations!
Terminal: A way to run certain commands on your phone, like CMD on a windows platform.

SDK traditionally stands for "Software Development Kit". The Android SDK provides the tools necessary to debug various android components, as well as a handful of pre-compiled libraries which are primarily used in developing applications.
Also, the words "Cook", "Chef", "Baked", "Cooking", "Kitchen", and "ChickenWings" should be avoided.
We have SOURCE, we do not need to "cook" anything, we can build the platform the same way the carriers do.

Although ports have some heavy-ass cooking going on
So many htc phones would be better with sense source. (that example of sense because it's the most popular redo of android these days)
Also, a thread like this shouldn't be in "chef central" because people in here should already be chefs, amirite?
But otherwise, I love this concept.
Edit: and honestly, I'm cool with those cheesy terms because they were made and developed on XDA, so thats good stuff.

Great idea. I've been lurking for quite some time now. Most of these terms I have been able to figure out without this glossary by continuing to read, read, read and search, search, search. The term I have not been able to figure out is odexed/deodexed. Anybody who could help me with these definitions will be greatly appreciated.

Need help with basic java!

Hi Everyone,
I am trying to code my first android app, which is an app that will copy some files from the app's asset folder to /system/app, adjust permissions and let the user know the process has been finished. I am a systems person, not a programmer, so know all of the details as to what has to get done. I create some scripts in /assets, and have the files I want to copy in /assets as well.
How do I go about programming this? Is this the right method I'm looking at doing?

I have zipped up everything I have related to the project, it is pretty simple, I just want to copy some files from the progrsm into /system/app, I have created an install and an uninstall script (although I haven't tested them just yet, not sure how I would do that right now) and have placed those scripts in the /assets/scripts folder. The goal is to copy the files into the proper locations, in order for the Kobo Vox to get access to the Android market. I have devised some instructions and posted them in the following forum page ( http://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=160948&page=1 ), but a lot of users seem to be messing up their system (they aren't a technical bunch) so I figured I should try and learn java and build an app for all of this...
Unfortunately this is a little beyond my abilities, but my intro to Java course starts tonight hehe.
Anyways, the project name is called OogleVox, it won't need to be going onto the Android Market, and will probabably just be an apk download from one site or another.

I don't know what Kobo Vox is, but for android, in general, the /system partition is read only, and on most devices the MMC or eMMC is locked so that it can't even be remounted read/write. Also, any user app won't be able to gain the required permissions to write to /system/app even if the partition was unlocked and mounted read/write. If you are rooted and security allows you write access to the MMC/eMMC, then you'd need su to gain the required permissions from the OS.

Thanks Gene Poole, I know this app will require root permissions, which will require a run as su. That's going to be a requirement for the app

Thanks for trying! I'm taking a Java course at school now, maybe I'll be able to figure this one out in due time.
If you want to write app before learning java you could use basic4android. You could use its phone library to execute the commands direct and as you can also issue adb commands etc with it you could also have your app more interactive whereby it could check for things you know cause problems and react accordingly.
The site is basic4ppc.com I think, it would allow you to quickly and easily code an app and as with eclipse and other ide's it produces native standalone apk files signed and ready for use.

Root request for Verizon Ellipsis 8 Tablet

Hello XDA, I'm new here and I haven't found any info regarding root on the aforementioned tablet. I know its only been out a short while and isn't anything to shake a stick at, however I believe that the ability to root and install custom ROMs on this device would allow it to run much smoother even with the low grade hardware.
Anyhow if anyone is willing to look into rooting I would be appreciative. I did find something where a fella tried kingoroot, towelroot, and one other method which apparently worked on the ellipsis 7, but had no success. If anyone else is in favor reply and let's get some attention. Thanks XDA.

It's a real shame that no one's done this. There are guys, here, that write whole ROMs for tablets they don't even own and no one's taken a shot at a root. Not being a coder, i can't but there are so many talented guys here i'm just really surprised someone didn't lean over, fart, and put out a root. lol.
Just no real demand for it for these tablets.
Verizon is charging more for these than what you would pay for a MUCH better tablet like a Nexus 7, or Gpad 8.3, etc...
The only people that are "buying" them, are the ones that VZW is giving away for free with you upgrade your phone and add the tablet to your data plan for $10 a month. If not for them giving them away for free, nobody would have one.
I'm stuck with a nexus 8 and require root.
the latest update was forced and now hundreds of my apps will not work due to not being allowed to change sd card files. Root for me is not cool or optional.

Hundreds of apps don't work with the small and incremental update? Like which ones?
For 1, I cannot imagine even having hundreds of apps... But the update was a small one, nothing significant, and I don't see why they would have stopped working?
Disabling writing to the SD is hardly incremental!
can't add new accounts
about half my created files on SD were deleted (save games, notes, configurations)
since existing files on SD cannot be changed, and new SD files cannot be created, the following apps will not function as I need them too, or fail to do anything:
roguelike classics
angband variants
angband
humble bundle app
es file manager
astro file manager
retro arch
and bible
hacker's keyboard
teamviewer for remote
teamviewer quicksupport
android VNC
scummvm
gdosbox
unipatcher
andftp
nesemu
snes9x
gbaemu
androgens
freeciv

What format is your SD card formatted in? Maybe something changed with the update... like the Shield Tablet cannot write to the SD card if it is over 32GB and formatted with exFAT... it needs to be in NTFS for anything higher than 32GB...
Maybe the same case here? Try copying the files to your PC, format the SD card with your PC(and specify NTFS and defaults for everything else), not the tablet because the tablet will format in exFAT even if it is larger than 32GB...
Try that and see if it works.
My Ellipsis 8 is on the latest update, and I can read and write to the SD card just fine... Not sure what the issues are that you are having.
What size SD card do you have?
I have this tab, and rooted. It took me a while to get the right combination though. Go here (it's in Chinese): http://www.kingroot.net and click on the download button with the Android icon to download the kingroot apk. Find a way to install the downloaded apk to your tab. You are rooted. I didn't like the kinguser root manager so I used this Replace_Kingroot_With_SuperSU.zip to change to SuperSU for root managing. The zip is attached. Just unzip, copy the "mrw" folder to your tab and use adb as root (either terminal emulator or adb shell from your computer) to run this command:

. Ignore the errors that may appear. After a while SuperSU will open and ask you to update binary. Do so and reboot. you are still rooted, but with SuperSU as root manager.
Now if only there were any custom ROMs...

Rooted using Kingroot just download and open click root let it do its thing if it fails select try again.... After root is established install suoerSUme let it do its thing.. Viola Root

Some Hacking in Yoga Book

Hi folks.
I'm an Android firmware developer (you can see my posts here in xda) that got a yoga book yesterday. For me it works at it should (by now) but my hacker soul speak to me and said: "at least take a look to see what you can get from this device". I don't have many time, so I can't spend time doing roms or fixing things by myself, but I can share with you some info I get and help you with my knowledge if someone is interested in "play" with this device.
First of all, I'm not responsable of anything that you can break following these steps. Almost all of them are tested and with some common sense you will not break anything, and if you break anything I will try to help you to fix it (if you are polite), but this is a work in progress and hacking and the possibility of brick the device is always there.
I only have the Android version without LTE, so I only tested in my Book.
So, here we go:

I get this codes decompiling EngineeringCode.apk with apktool. Be carefull with them:

Change curfirmwarever to a valid OLD firmware, this way you will get the next one in age.
Change locale if needed.

These images are not full ota images, they are diff versions. This means that we can't use them to mod the image, or recover a bricked device, but this is a first step
3) Custom images
We don't have real sources to build a custom image (the lenovo's open source files are useless), but this doesn't mean that we couldn't modify stock images to take out useless apks or get better performance.
We can get this using an Android Kitchen and a full update image for the device.
As Android kitchen you can use SuperR kitchen (https://forum.xda-developers.com/ap...chen-superr-s-kitchen-v1-1-50-v2-1-6-t3597434)
As full image, I only tested the one here (https://easy-firmware.com/index.php?a=browse&b=category&id=19521) because I can't download any newer one.
I tested uncompressing it, deodexing the apks and doing a new image. But I don't test it in the device because I need to install twrp to flash the new image and I don't have time to test. But this should work, I did it many times so if someone is interested I can give steps to do it and support for testing.
If someone can get the latest full images, send then to me and maybe I can get some time to do some tests.
PD: Probably we could use this as a base to get LineageOS 14.1 working: https://github.com/latte-dev/android_device_xiaomi_latte/tree/cm-14.1

Sorry, my knowledge of Windows is only user level . Install it in personal computer to play games .
But I really don't know why people wants to run Windows there, it will go slowly than Android and its less touch oriented... but I suppose that this is a chat for another thread

Have you tried running it through Crossover? It may be in its infancy but i have got a few apps running OK with it.
I have the full "YB1-X90F_USR_S000196_1611040312_WW06_BP_ROW" I can upload somewhere if anyone can suggest a good site to do so without signing up? The file is about 2.5gb
It will be great if we could get the latest version, because maybe these older versions have older files that we have updated in our tablets.
Mixing files could give unknown problems
The current TWRP is based on the new Yoga Tab 3
I am starting to think they do not do full roms for this in the same way they do for a lot of their other devices.
We know the otas are available from tabdl.ota.lenovomm.com/dls/v6/ and are named according to the 2 builds that it bridges. As easy-firmware had the december full rom under the file name B1-X90F_USR_S000196_1611040312_WW06_BP_ROW-flashfiles.zip I had hoped that I could work out the file path to pull it down.
There were some interesting ideas here, https://forum.xda-developers.com/android/help/how-download-stock-roms-lenovos-ota-t3109507 but it seems there is a difference between phonedl.ota and tabdl.ota
Queries to full roms that work for phones, don't seem to work for the yoga book.
Anyone with more web knowledge able to pick this up? I am not sure the files are there but I feel they should be.

Update: the downloads seem to be hosted via CloudFront. An Amazon service, but I can not find out a way of listing the available files. The latest full rom would be

But the Last 8 chars are random and we do not know what they are.
So we have two hopes. First work out the right query to the link from fus.lenovomm.com or two find a way of listing files available in tabdl.ota.lenovomm.com/dls/v6
Not sure I have got much further but ill keep trying when I can.
Hey, I should mention that I have some files that you may find helpful; I got them from the easy firmware website. They're all the .img files for each partition in Android (ie. boot.img, cache.img, config.img, factory.img, recovery.img, system.img) as well as: biosupdate.fv, bootloader, firmware.bin and gpt.bin. However, these of course aren't in the normal "flashable .zip ROM" format. So unless you know how to take apart these .img files they aren't very useful. If you need any more help or have any other questions about how far we've come on our own, feel free to ask. danjac also has great knowledge of our efforts.
Yes, I know how to use them, unpack, modify, etc. But what I want is the latest version, no a old version (I hav these files too). If you have them I can do some changes, debloat, etc.
Anyway, I see little interest in custom roms in this forum ( probably because it's not a device with a lot of users or the users are not the techy kind), so I prefer to help others with info than do a custom rom that only 2 or 3 people will use. Doing custom roms is a time hungry task and probably it doesnt worth the effort. Anyway this device is not full of bloatware like samsung ones, so it useable as it is.
As I said in my first post if anyone is interested I can give some hints and support to modify the full image (but only the latest one).
It's so sad that there are only a few interested owners of this tab - it's such a nice device but i fear the day lenovo decides to end their support for it. There will be no custom roms to switch to and keep the device alive - it will be a soon to be bit of old tech garbage BTW. I still use my Asus Transformer Prime because of the nice community
@NiffStipples I fully agree. This device is so powerful and its a suprise that it is invisible to the "market". In my humple opinion the normal ROMs aren't that bad besides missing updates but I would love to see all the power served through a custom rom. unfortunately programming is not my business

Interesting - is Crossover good (and does it require factory reset)?
Hi, It works well with some things and not others. Often the why and where are not obvious. It is basically "wine" the layer that allows some windows apps to run on a linux install. Tweeked to work with android. Just an install to put crossover on. Then another install (Within crossover), to put you app on crossover. If it doesn't work out of the box, there windows libraries you can switch out and dependencies you can install. (Eg: directx , .net) Even if your not technical. I would say get on the beta program and give it a try.

I've entered the Android YogaBook's BIOS and noticed that VT-X is enabled by default! With Limbo x86 we could get a fully working virtualized Windows or Linux, if it wasn't for... KVM. It seems like it's not enabled in Lenovo's default kernel. Could we get to recompile the kernel with this option on? i'm not a big android/ROM expert but i surfed the open_source_code folder from Lenovo and it seemed, to me, that we could rebuild the Kernel at least.
This could really change things!
