[Q] Looking for my perfect rom - HTC Droid DNA

So i got my DNA last week and have been playing around with it for awhile (trying several different roms) but i havent found one that fits me perfectly.
I'm looking for one that is desensed
remap hardware keys
Works with Verizon (though 99% of them do)
Beats audio enabled
HTC keyboard (though i can go without)
The two closest i've gotten is VipersDNA and the Unofficial CM port.
I really like CM only real problem is that beats doesnt really work with it (and i know it has dsp but just doesnt sound as well and i cant get eq perfect)
Viper is almost perfect besides a few nitpicks (I miss my scrollable wallpaper and dont like user a different launcher on top) and i prefer the task manager on CM a bit better (though ive never had the phone lag once which is amazing i like hitting recent and closing all apps, but i can easily go without)
Anyone have any suggestions? I've tried several others but can't find one just right...

I tried nos gpe earlier today but had a few to many bugs for me, or I did somthing wrong. It had data connection but my 3g 4g icon wouldn't show and no hardware key remap. And kept giving me no service icon but I could make calls , but that one is super close too

I am on CM 10.1 Right now. Only gripe is the camera, not nearly as good as stock sense since it isn't the sense camera but i can live with it. Some of the customization features dont work either. I wouldn't say it is perfect but it is getting there and the DEVs are doing an amazing job for something that is free. Im just waiting for the bugs on GPE to be worked out so I can switch to that.

I'm currently on EclipticNA by Hawknest. It's Sense 5 based so you still have Beats Audio and the HTC Keyboard. All system apps and some user apps are blacked out and inverted, which I love. This ROM is VERY fast, and with Crpalmers kernel it's faster than light! For desensing, just freeze or uninstall Sense, and use whatever other launcher you want. Recent apps button is remapable. There's "press for recents", "press for recents, hold for menu", and "press for menu, hold for recent".
Other than that, when all the kinks in Newt's GPE ROM get worked out, that would be good for your needs.

Romwise
Firstly I wanna start out by saying that having to post 10x before i can post to help development is annoying. But i do understand why. So im posting this as my first post to start my way to be able to help development. Im currently rocking a Droid dna. Roms Ive so far liked for this phone Ill list with a brief reason why in order.
1. Team Venom Viper rom. Fast stable and mods out the bum. No issues
2. EclipticNa inverted. Best sense 5 rom to me. Fast stable and saves so much battery with the invert
3. Supercharged hatka. Pretty fast decent mods. And stable.
Ive flashed and used 8 of the roms from xda for the dna so far. When Im able to post for development Ill start giving detailed reviews and helping the devs out. U guys can help a guy out by giving me a thumbs up or something. Thanks.

There is a new version of NOS GPE out, version 1.0.3, which fixed all the force reboot and data issues for me, all I had to do was cycle airplane mode two or three times for it to pick up Verizon's connection. Smoothest ROM I've tried so far.
It makes sense that it would work well, because it's coming from an AOSP rom made by HTC for the One. I've had problems with small things not working on other custom ROMs, like HDMI. GPE 1.0.3 has no issues like that so far.

I believe it's Sense based to look like AOSP, hence the name Google Experience.

According to newtoroot it's the HTC version of AOSP 4.3 made for the Google Play Edition of the One, so it should be as close to stock as possible..... It also has no hints of sense in any of the apps or menus....

Except for beats that's from sense, not aosp, and if it were pure aosp it wouldn't be 400megs, it'd be like 150. Its desensed from HTC, that's it. It also works quite well, and rather then being bland and boring (to me) it is a very excellent choice for non sense but pretty perfect running.

True, I guess ultimately it's the best AOSP ROM available for the DNA, although I'd love to see a team like Venom come out with a more custom experience based off of it.

"Anandtech's Brian Klug discovered that both the Developer Editions of the HTC One and the Samsung Galaxy S 4 will not receive software updates directly from Google because they're not running pure Android Open Source Project (AOSP) software, but instead a combination of the OEM kernel and the stock Android skin. As a result, the Google Play edition devices may not receive new Android versions as quickly as standard Nexus devices."
http://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2013...one-and-galaxy-s-4-arent-quite-nexus-devices/
I'm still wondering what other "stuff" is in the Google Editions; pure AOSP is under 200 MB, add gapps which is under 100 MB, and then there's _____?

I had issues with version 1 and 2, but 3 has been on my phone since he released it and only had an initial data issue (put the phone in airplane mode twice and it fixed it)

Hopefully by now he OP has narrowed down his choices, so continuing with another subject that came up: why have an original development and a development forum?
Is the distinction that an original development ROM is compiled from source even if the ROM has cherry-picks from another ROM and is based on something such as CM, while the development forum are for ROMs that are ported from one device to another which is made to fit over the Sense base since there is no public Sense source to compile from, or is a modification of a manufacturer's ROM?

Built from source = original development
Built from a factory ROM or otherwise pre compiled image, including from other devices (this covers current MIUI as well) = development
The Roms in development because they have cherry picks but are source built should be in original development, but whatever the mods decide I guess.
That's how I understood it when it was originally posted by XDA when it started.

Looking for the perfect ROM. Need help.

Has anyone been using a ROM for HTC EVO 3d they love?. I'm looking for a ROM that is fast (snappy), saves battery, everything works great, and tips the charts on linpack and benchmarks that comes with an outstanding kernel that is 100% working with the ROM. If you think your using this or may have found one please let me know. Thanks.

Try LeeDroid 3. There is no custom kernel yet.
I swear by CleanROM DE. Easily adjustable OC, everything works, good battery, and the dev is really helpful and friendly.

Try EvoZoneRed_2.3.4...
I've been using it for a while, its Good!
Best ROM has to be viper ROM. It's super fast and its actually beening upgraded to the 2.34 version and its getting tested. That's for sure the best ROM out there.
Go with deck's, stable, reliable, and battery life is amazing. Unfortunately, he seems to have disappeared for a while now...
Deff warm twopointthree. Still in beta, but it's by far the best looking rom. stable. Lots of features and. Cm7-like customization. Good battery too.

Best ROM I have used is still ViperROM
I tried out a bunch of roms today, coming from stock rooted and then steel 2.2 which I ran till this weekend. I'm looking for a stable daily driver, but since I was flashing anyways I decided to try out some of the new features out there. Keep in mind I used each rom probably for less than 30 min, so I am really just giving a first impression on what I liked. Also, I didn't take battery into account, which has been great for me stock, rooted, or otherwise.
JoelZ9614 - Runnymede sense 3.5 port v1
Sense 3.5 is great. It runs noticeably smoother than stock sense 3.0, and most custom roms running sense 3.0. By smoother I mean when you swipe screens and the carousel. The beats splash is the coolest splash I've seen, and the beats audio feature has a noticeable difference in how the device sounds, even if it is just eq'ing it fits my style of music to make it sound better. My first install froze up a bunch, requiring battery pulls, that was after wiping everything once. Second time I flashed this rom I wiped multiple times, may have even ran a superwipe type zip. Second time didn't have the lock ups, everything seemed to be in order. Updated widgets and menus make sense 3.5 desirable - even if it isn't much of an upgrade to 3.0. I didn't notice if this rom had the new 3.5 homescreen widgets, it was outfitted with the updated sense clock but that was it. Still very nice, and was my favorite rom of the bunch. It needs camera/3d/4g to be a viable option for me, which I hope is fixed soon with all the people working on sense 3.5.
Virus - Infected Rom Eternity RLS 1.2.2
I was very impressed by this rom as well, I've used Virus's roms on my 4g and like his work a lot. The smoothness through screen on this rom was very comparable to the sense 3.5 rom, more smooth than overclocked roms I tried. Beats audio works well on this rom also. The extra tweaks/options included in this rom make it really great - it's something that us rom flashers really need to appreciate, easy customization is great for me as someone who doesn't want to keep messing with stuff and than seeing how it looks and then having to flash/edit more files to check it out again. This rom is fast and smooth, and has a lot of transition effects that are different than other roms. I wasn't too fond of the way dialogue boxes popped in kinda sideways, but everything else was awesome, particularly the animation when pressing the back button and exiting screens. The animations do make everything feel smoother and more polished, and there's a lot of features added to this rom that work. This rom had less free ram than some other options out there, but similar to stock/stock based roms. I don't think this is a bad thing, as everything ran quickly and smoothly, but may account for lower benchmarks than others if that's your thing. Theme on this rom is friggin schweet. The newest 1.2.2 version looks like a winner.
MIUI.us/Scott951 - MIUI 1.9.23
I'm someone who never used MIUI as my own daily driver, but I've installed it for others. The main reason is 4g, I wanted to have it. I still took a look to see how it was. The Evo3D package is quite nice, there are some nice widgets packed along with it that I don't believe are part of MIUI, like a sense type clock that has easy to configure touch options for the various parts. The rom installed very quickly as it was a small file, and ran beautifully for the time I tried it. The many options and individual theming options seemed quite appealing, and I can see why so many MIUI installs end up so beautifully presented by some flashers out here. I remember not liking the contacts app - it was either slow or something else bothered me. The messaging app stood out to me as interesting tho. I may have been getting it confused with the next rom, as I spent very little time with MIUI.
Vaelek - Vaelpak 3D RC2
Vaelek is another devloper I have experience with from my Evo4g. His rom was the first one I used to have customization options after install, and also the first rom I used that had a non-sense launcher on it. Vaelpak 3D RC2 was my first experience using Go Launcher EX. I've used both Launcher Pro and ADW EX, and found Go Launcher EX to really outshine the two tried and trusted launchers with all the extras they've been adding. Go launcher hasn't exactly been a secret for some time now, but I was still impressed by all it has to offer these days with all the Go apps, widgets and themes it really gives every other launcher from sense to MIUI a run for its money. Go launcher stock looks great, and the themes I looked at looked terrific as well. I also love the screen transition options, they made me chuckle a bit. Vaelpak manages to keep a lot of stock sense underlay/apps, and still has a lot of free memory to spare. Rom ran great and might be calling my name later if I get curious about Go Launcher, but I didn't give it a full try as I wasn't sure I wanted to take time to learn/configure it to be my daily driver.
toastcfh - CyanogenMod 7 VALPHA3
I knew I wasn't going to daily this but just wanted to test it out. Thought it was going to be super smooth, which it is, but the nexus LWP used didn't seem to be running the best or wasn't the best version of it, cuz it looked a tad laggy to me. Having used CM7 before, it's a rom whose reputation speaks for itself with options/speed, and I'm sure this version is no different.
scrosler - Clean Rom Developers Edition
My first taste of Evo3D overclock. Found the screen transitions to be less smooth than Sense 3.5/Infected, but was better than stock though. There was a lot of free memory to work with on this rom. I tried using the rom updater to change some of the theme, but after flashing some of the zips in recovery I didn't notice any change, perhaps I did something wrong. I find themes/icon sets in other roms to look better, although this rom had a very "proper" look to it, and stood out as sort of an "HD" version of a stockish rom. I think I would stick a theme on this and call it a day. The overclock made for some good benchmarks, I didn't take the time to install games and test out differences there. This does seem to be a choice overclocking rom though, keeping sense but making it far less of a hog. . Ran solid for me, no bugs in short term testing.
SteelH - SteelRom v2.62
Coming from Steel v2.2, I hadn't updated previously because I didn't have any problems and everything was just great - I was running the Honeycomb theme by mayfield with zeus mods and didn't really cave in to the new rom features till I saw sense 3.5 on my friend's tbolt and saw how smooth it was compared to my phone. I hoped I would find another stable release from Steel, which has so far been the case. The rom has a few aesthetic tweaks over stock which I like, and runs well. I kind of want my zeus mods back, which I may try to get thru the honeycomb theme if it lets me. The notification icons are a little like Clean Rom in that they are stockish, but I prefer the honeycomb/stock gingerbread type ones over both. Everything about this rom feels solid, and the black sense clock I've preferred since my evo4g is included here and looks great. I actually have been trying to get a black sense clock with no background - might even try Shogun just for that reason. Beats audio in this rom really isn't what it is in sense 3.5/infected roms, it feels like less of an improvement and more like the stock eq settings. I feel at home running SteelH's roms, as he fits the niche that I look for - stability and the more important new features you would want in a custom rom.
Things I noticed testing all these:
Roms with Beats Audio/DSP Manager - I had been using DSP Manager to up my handset speaker volume by doing custom EQ and all the levels. The roms with Beats Audio from the XE port sounded about the same without using the DSP Manager EQ, and when I turned the EQ on it actually LOWERED the handset speaker volume, even with the EQ levels turned up. On roms with the beats audio that wasn't the ported version like on SteelH's rom, using the DSP Manager EQ makes the speaker volume louder and better IMO.
Transparent Notifications/app drawer - I strongly prefer transparent notifications, and found it implemented a little differently in various roms/themes. There's some more opaque, some more transparent, different color fonts. I didn't have too many issues reading them, I just liked it more when it looked consistent, like with the rest of the drop down and the quick settings.
Customizable quick settings - This should be a must for every rom! If you can put them in a different order someone tell me cause that would be perfect.
Remapping the personalization button - why doesn't HTC let you do this? I mean, it is the "personalization" button. Just slap some generic shape on there or something. One rom let me change this to broswer but it didn't work. I don't remember which one. Another let me change it and it worked fine.
Infected Eternity/ SteelRom win best dialer award
Would like to see more custom lock rings/lock ring docks out there!
Lots of interesting splash screens out there
Cameras - ISO1250 seems to make noticeably different pictures, nice to have this option. I have no idea if 8mp did anything, I guess if I pull a pic to the PC I could check it out. Touch screen shots work better than the camera button, but I use the button anyways because it just feels nicer to do. Anyone have any idea why the button lags and if it can be fixed somehow? Haven't looked to see if the compression fix for images changes anything either, maybe a comparison is in order.
Everyone who worked on removing the HTC spyware stuff has to be commended. I feel like that is the biggest difference in rooting this phone, removing that stuff makes the phone run so much better and has been less buggy for me as well. I believe Treve was a major player in this.
Support for these roms has been phenomenal. All these roms had threads with constant updates and feedback between developers and users, making them some of the many standouts on these boards.
I don't know if me writing this up helps anyone as tests were so short, but maybe it gives you an idea of what to check out. I haven't gotten around to trying out roms until lately because my phone was running great and it takes so long to try out all of them, and there's still more I wanted to test.
All the roms I tried surprised me, except MIUI and CM7, which I had varying experience with before and always feel polished. It feels like Evo3D development is picking up quite a bit, and is getting very good. Major ups to you guys cooking up these roms.
As a new Droid user, and seeing that there is so many options out there, its like asking which flavor ice cream is the best, all depends on the user and what their eye in the first place to flash it,
However I run cleanrom2.5 with the bcblend kernal and this thing is dam quick. And Scott provides superb support with all of his work. So what's your favorite ice cream? Lol, just look thro some posts and find what sounds decent and complete to you and flash it.

Thanks for everyone's feedback I greatly appreciated. I just installed steal ROM and its nice. Fast, even while being underclocked. Could use a couple of things like 8mm cam, more bloatware removed, more quick settings. Things I like. What do you guys think about his ROM?
Sent from my PG86100 using xda premium
Cleanrom has no bloat, lots of settings and options, its been cleaned up nicely, steel is very popular as well amoung the masses you just gotta try it and see what happens see if you like it or not,
Kernals are the performance boosters, to me the kernal is more important than the ROM, so just try some different things and see what u like

Energy vs Revolution

Has anyone tried both of these ROMs on the Amaze? I've read all 46 pages of the Revolution forum and several Energy. Both look like they meet my needs. But I'd like a good comparison between them.
My needs:
- Close to stock feel/look (like the blue themes)
- Ability to remove pre-installed apps/bloatware
- Wi-fi calling (must have due to my location)
- Better battery life
- A bit snappier
- Free tethering would be a bonus
I've read that some have experienced texting and mms sending issues with Energy and some say that Revolution is outdated.
I realize YMMV, but I'd appreciate a comparison between the 2. Thanks.

I'm loving Revolution right now... And I ran Energy since the day it came out.
It has the stock feel and way easier to customise. It feels better than the stock Rom I just came from.
They're both easy to debloat and deodexed.
I use my phone so much that I get roughly the same battery life on both.
Both ROMs are very fast and snappy.
I would recommend both... But I'm preferring ARHD right now.
MrMako777 points out a good point though in another threas. ARHD is 1.36 build so no WiFi calling, so if u need that, then Energy would be better (although I prefer stock rooted over energy)

Hmmm. That's a little confusing. On the Revolution Thread, it says that there is "improved wi-fi calling" (from Post #1, ARHD 1.1.0 release date 19 Nov 11). Maybe since I need to have wi-fi calling, I should go with Energy.
Have you had the opportunity to test wi-fi calling with either one? Any issues (notably, the sending problems with Energy or the lack of capability with ARHD)?
Thanks again!
Sorry... Revolution is identical to stock as far as UI look... It is built on 1.36 which the stock 1.36 didn't have WiFi calling. I haven't tested it on revolution, but WiFi calling does work on Energy ROM. There's also a modified messaging apk that fixes a time stamp issue with texts.

Ok. Now I'm leaning towards energy unless I can get more info on WiFi calling in ARHD.
You said that ARHD is more easily customized than Energy. But Energy can still be customized (wallpaper, ringtones, etc), right?

Oh certainly... Wallpapers, Ringtones, Sounds, and even lockrings can be personalized on ALL rooted ROMs... NRGZ28 just has a heavy blue theme on his Rom... On the statusbar icons, dialer, app icons... Etc...
XBoarder has a pretty sick 3.5 ROM also that I'm a big fan of. You can find that at android-dev.us.
Craigtut has an ics themed ROM that is pretty nice also. I can't say too much, but his next update for that ROM is pretty sick

xboarders sense 3.5 rc1.7, great rom (my DD) it's fast, stable, and had great tweaks. though it doesn't leave much room for themes, as m10tools for 3.5 was never well adopted.
for stock 3.0 with a ton of mods i recommend bulletproof 2.5, if ARHD had a current version that would be my go-to as mike1986 is a solid dev.
Good to hear about u liking blue... U will prolly be best off with NRG ROM.
I like the 3.5 (its called Sense 3.5 RC1.7) for it has 3.5 features compared to 3.0... I mainly like the snappiness and loon myself.
Here's what I do. I flash a ROM using 4ext. I backup its stock load. Then I customize. After I have it the way I want and am sure its running stable after I modify it, I do a another backup and delete the old backup. Then I format all partitions (except sd) in the recovery's wipe menu and flash the next ROM... And repeat

Sorry... I just had to quote this.
It's not everyday someone comments on how about how vibrant and active the Amaze development community was...
There are a few others that I didn't mention from HeyJoe and Chrispaw also here, as well as more at Android-dev.us.
When ICS and s=off happen, it should get even better.

I list all the Roms here - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1545464
i have to update this lol, but no stable releases have come out in a while
we do have a lot of roms , just no ICS
We have about 15 roms give or take
Thanks to all of you for your inputs. I'm going to go with the Energy ROM and see how that goes. Maybe I'll try something else after that.

Well, this phone was really easy to unlock/root. The custom recovery has a lot of interesting options--I see how easy it is now to switch between ROMs when you get bored with one!
For those that are lurking and may be intested in my experience (b/c you'd like to try something like this):
- The "How To Root HTC Ruby" was very helpful. for the overall rooting process Post #2 was a bit confusing (I think there are some links missing). I basically went to the HTCDev website, registered, and followed the unlock instructions on the site.
- I used the Clockword Mod custom recovery (as opposed to what was suggested in the above post). A good thing to note is that when installing a ROM it says to do a reset/wipe, the author generally means through the recovery, not the device (I ended up doing both since I didn't know about the option in the recovery).
- Once the recovery is in place, adding the ROM is as simple as downloading the ZIP, copying it to SDcard, rebooting to recovery, and loading the ZIP. If I can do it, just about anyone else can, too!
- After installing the Energy ROM, I could not get the WiFi to work. Rather than read hundreds of posts, I did a search on that thread and found an updated kernel in Post #4. Followed the specific instructions and problem solved.
Now that I have been running this for a couple of days, only a few things that I don't like:
- Random reboots. Though I did have them on stock, they appear more often now.
- The HTC Trace keyboard acts much differently than on stock. For example, when swiping some letters, words I've never used pop up and choices that I expect don't appear. I presume it's because NRG customized it for himself.
- It is REALLLY blue. If you don't like blue, this is not the ROM for you! (Did not mean to rhyme that but if works.) Blue is my favorite color so I don't mind it that much. But because of the way he has themed it, some screens appear much darker than they should. Also, within the tray, there is no distincition between background apps (like WiFi calling, JuiceDefender, etc) and Notifications (package updates, email updates, etc) because the theme is so dark.
Overall, now that I've "got my feet wet" with this ROM, I may actually look at others. But this was a great place to start.
I got no reboots with Energy ROM. I've never gotten a reboot (unless I was testing something in alpha/beta stages) on this phone. And if u used 4ext recovery, you wouldn't have had the broken WiFi because you don't have to flash the kernel separately.
Sent from my HTC Amaze running Sense 3.5
i never had any random boots with any rom besides Bliss Sense 3.5 ( My FAV Sense 3.5 but was never released stable ............
Maybe I got a lemon device. Though I talked to a t-mo rep who has an Amaze and he said there are occasional reboots.
I may try another ROM and see if that helps but I doubt it will.

[Review] ReZound Roms

Ok to begin this topic, I am in no way an expert and this is based on my preferences and experiences with the Roms listed, present and future.
I will be updating this as I test these Roms for one week or until I have exhausted featur, My signature will reflect the Rom I am currently testing.
These will be in order of use not alphabetical and will contain GB Firmware patch links when required.
Lets get started.
Ratings
1 Star = 1/2 Star =
Top Rating = 10
All of these Developers have done excellent work providing our community with quality work, this is not meant to Flame against them, just my experiences shared for those who wish to find the Rom that is right for them and I am still looking for my favorite, PM me suggestions.
My attempt to review these Roms after a week of switching back and forth, ratings and information subject to change.
Ineffabilis Dues v1.1
[ROM] Ineffabilis Deus v1.1 [6/26/12] Sense 3.6 | Beats | Tweaks | 3.14.605.10
GB Patch
First thoughts:
This Rom was the first I have ever flashed, it has many customization features built into the rom and is very very stable.
Many launcher options on installation, the customizations I mentioned before are mainly due to the launchers that you can choose from.
While this isn't spectacular, the Notification customization is amazing and quite user friendly.
I wasn't quite sure on what was missing from this Rom.

Newts Zone XxX RLS 3.2.1
[ROM - 7/7] NeWts zOnE XxX RLS 3.2.1
Patch Located in Rom posting.
First thoughts:
I believe this Rom is still in development, newtoroot stated he was releasing an update, so this view point is prior to that release.
Issues I had encountered:
Sense and all sense related, clock, weather, etc. closing unexpectedly.
Graphical glitches in the weather, Icons on the home screen.
All in all this is a very good Rom, Once the bugs have been reduced I would not mind using it for more than a day.
Beats Audio on all apps with the Beats notification control!!
This Rom is also very customizable with lots of support from zhp pilot.

Nils' Business ICS 4.0.3 Sense 4.0
[ROM][07.27.12][V2.3] Nils' Business ICS 4.0.3 Sense 4.0 [Aroma Installer]
First thoughts:
This is another very stable rom, it has some customization features, HTC Hub included into the personalize section which is always a plus, but the service seems to be down due to HTC.
First Boot Issues:
Status bar carrier name collapsed upon itself.
Fix: changing the carrier name with the tweaks app and then removing it if desired fixes this problem.
Weather app is graphically bugged, even after turning off Force 2D GPU Rendering and a Hot Reboot it is still sluggish looking and the menu has some graphical glitches.
Maybe a side effect of the CPU being under clocked?
Fix: Unknown.
Locksreen Icons:
The lockscreen icons seem to be only set to what the launcher is set to, this is a bump that you have to get over immediately if you like customizing your icons to different apps.
Widgets:
This Rom has all of the goodies that come stock from HTC and Android.
Notifications Area:
As Nils' informed me in the forums, tapping on the carrier name toggles Quick Settings, inventive way of hiding them and I personally like this.
Again there isn't a recent apps menu, as I have said before, I personally like being able to switch to an app that I was using before I had a Email or SMS Message.
Unfortunately it does not seem to have a way of organizing the Quick Settings menu items to your own personal liking.
Wifi / Radio:
I experienced no issues with connecting to wireless routers or signal issues.
Battery:
55% battery left with moderate use for the last 5 hours, WiFi seems to disable itself quite well when not in use, for all the people who think sense kills a battery, think again as Nils' might have something going here.
Down only 5% while editing this post and replying to a few pm's
Beats Audio:
When I know, you will know.
Wirelss ADB:
You will have to go to the play store to get Wireless ADB as it does not seem to be included.
CarrierIQ:
I could not find a trace of this trashy forced spyware.
Oddities:
While skimming through the People tab of the PhoneBook, I opened the menu and found a button for Verizons Backup Assistant Plus, When tapped nothing happens, as it is not installed on this Rom and having flashed this Rom before, I backed up my contacts with Google prior to flashing it again.
This one seemed odd to me, and I kind of liked it, but Google Play automatically downloaded 3 out of my last 6 downloaded apps.
There does not seem to be a setting to allow the homescreen to wrap to the first panel as seen in other Roms and...

I hope so too, I will be adding to it as I switch between the Roms again and again until I haven't missed anything substantial.
I just flashed back to Nils' last night from your Rom, so some stuff may be jumbled.
I think something you may have missed from NilsP ICS Sense is the battery life. His battery life is very good (he customized it for that and stability) Using android i don't know of many people who use VZWbackup for their contacts and can't really imagine using that instead of google's own solution.
ViperRez, also is incredibly innovative and has good battery life, customizability. It is currently my daily driver until AOSP.
I would definitely put NilsP's at a 4 star at least. ViperRez i think is right up there. My favorite Sense 3.6 and Sense 4 roms.

I am still swapping out Roms and haven't fully tested everything, but at the moment 3 1/2 is as high as I can go at the moment, this is just the beginning of a review between what I have found to be the big hitters and have yet to test cleanROM.
Don't worry I will update with battery life and the like eventually, I am going to take a week on each Rom and edit this post, currently I am back on the ViperRez, next week I will return to Nils', but the main thing reason the VZW Backup is so important, new users are given the tool by default and I must admit, the Google version only confuses me and I have never took the time to use it and learn how to back up my contacts and phone numbers, something 3 out of the 4 Roms I have tried have optional during first boot is VZW Backup and Google.

Just to add. Quick settings is in the pulldown. Just tap the logo bar and it toggles. Just don't want anyone to think 4.0 ROM does not have QS and Tweaks.
Also, great idea for a thread
I havent used Ineffibilis Deus or Nils Business Sense so I have no opinions on those, but IMO ViperRez beats out OneXxX. OneXxX just seemed a little buggy and slow. Still, if ViperRez weren't around, it'd be my second pick.

Well it was included with the Rom and modifies the Rom at the lowest levels, so why not?
After reading what zone pm'd me, he actually rebuilt the entire Rom, so I think that counts in this list.

Theming it, adding ad block hosts, and updating gapps is not a new ROM. Newt did 99.9% of the ROM if you discount the blue color. I am not saying the blue doesn't look great or not take a long time to do, but it isn't a new ROM or development. It is theming.
Please just remove it from the list. Thanks..

but i like the idea of this thread. grate work OP
You need to try ConRom with the desensed option . Its the best one so far in my opinion!
ViperRez is gr8 but the battery drain
Newts have gr8 power setting

Do you have to sacrifice something with each rom?

I was given a Verizon HTC 4G Thunderbolt today. My wifes old Fascinate was on the verge of dying, so it was perfect timing. I got her all setup with her apps/contacts and she started learning how to use her new phone..... but now that she's sleeping I figured I would "enhance" her new phone and maybe learn a little something in the meantime. If I don't manage to turn it into a paperweight
I've never flashed a ROM before, but I've rooted many phones. I managed to get this one rooted and have downloaded a few roms (haven't flashed them yet), but after going through the different options it seems like you are always sacrificing something with a rom, is this normal?
I found that one rom where the wifi didn't work (this is a must for my wifes limited data plan), I found another rom where the camera didn't work (We have 3 kids and her phone is basically her camera), I found another one where 4G wasn't supported (she's going from a 3G to a 4G phone, I want her to use that feature).
Anyway, it just seems like each one has something that doesn't work...Is this normal or did I just happen to click on the ones that have issues?

Which ROMs have you downloaded? I'd recommend ThunderShed for a Gingerbread base. I used that for several months without issue. I'm on Liquid's ICS now and only have the reported camcorder issue although the camera still works.
I haven't flashed anything yet, I just started downloading roms and happened to notice that Liquid didn't have a working video camera. I can't remember the names of each one, but as mentioned before, one didn't have a working wifi, one didn't support 4G.... so it just seemed like each one was missing something.
I'll look into the one you mentioned, thanks!
If youre looking for a ics sense 3.6 based rom with everything working I suggest trying out nusense 3.6. its pretty good and everything seems to work. what I am running now.
If you want a GB then for aosp thundershed is the way to go. If you want a good sense gb rom skyraider is perfect when it comes to sense roms and everything works on those 2.
Oh and might want to ask your wife if she wants you messing with her phone. Messing with a womans phone is like messing with her kid not a great idea lol. I know my wife has told me if I root her phone she will kill me.

LOL, I'll check them out, THANKS!
As for me rooting her phone, she doesn't have a clue what that means, she just knows that now she doesn't have ads in her games and she likes that.
She did complain that the HTC interface is way different than the Samsung interface (DUH), are there ary roms that would make it look/act like her Samsung?
Samsung usually runs aosp so if you flash liquid ics she may not notice if you use a touchwiz theme.

Also some people has had the camera to stop working also after while. Yeah sense is way different than touchwiz. You could look for a theme that mimics touchwiz.
You could download a launcher like HOLO, Go launcher and AWD (think thats what its called.) .
I will second the recommendation of Thundershed 1.6, which has been flawless since I flashed it (everything works, runs super fast and smooth, and battery life is way better than stock and most other custom ROMs). You do need to bear in mind that these are custom ROMs, meaning each is designed to reflect the priorities of the designer and involve a certain degree of risk (rooting and replacing the stock ROM invalidates warraty), but in my experience the custom ROMs I have used (only two: BAMF Son Of A Bliss aka SOAB 1.4; Thundershed 1.6) have been as stable (if not more stable) than the original Thunderbolt. Also keep in mind, *every* device is different and custom ROMs act differently on every device.
Those caveats in place, I'd research different custom ROMs, and how each can be customized with different launchers, lockscreens and themes, and try one or two out. The Sense-based ROMs will act more like the stock Thunderbolt. Sense based ROMs include SOAB, Skyraider Zeus, and BAMF Forever, and the AOSP ROMs include Thundershed, Liquid Smooth 3.2, and SFK's CM7 build. While everyone is excited about the new ICS custom ROMs they still seem pretty "BETA" (Santod's NuSense 3.6 seems furthest along) like and so I'd wait until all of the bugs are worked out and focus more on Gingerbread ROMs for your "daily driver."
Hope this helps.

Newly unlocked: prefer Sense or Viper

I know alot of folks here have recently JTAG'd or just aquired an s-off dna. so now that you've have a chance to look at the scene... what do you prefer?
The Viper team won't do Sense 5 and the Sense 5 ROMS are basically stock. So from what i can tell, Sense 5 ROMS look like the same as the DNA unrooted but with the currents/blinkfeed widget.
I haven't tried the Viper ROMS yet, but will this week. I'm just curious on what people are settling on.

Would have to throw in with the sense 5 guys. I hope the Viper team is reading and makes the call. I know they are considering it.
Minus BlinkFeed, Sense 5 is quite nice.
I run a Viper setup and a Sense 5 setup. I'm also running another sense 4+ setup that's oh so sweet. But typically speaking I keep a nandroid backup of each so I can just do a full wipe and restore what I want to run.
They both have their strong points, Viper offers the ultimate in customization.
But sense 5 has a lot of customizations and tweaks and performance improvements, especially Newt's rom. And there's a big update that should be dropping anytime now. Not as many different configuration options, but its still quite a bit improved and modified over stock.
Maybe it's because the JTAG guy have been stock so long, but I think only choosing one or the other is a big mistake. You should run one for a few days and then run the other for a few days.
Oh and blinkfeed isn't all bad, there was a lot of negative speculation pre release and still from people that haven't run it. I fully expected to hate it honestly. I'm not really a widget kind of person and I saw it as a permanent widget. But when I actually set it up and use it, I think it's pretty cool. However I don't do social networking like facebook. Generally speaking I don't even set blinkfeed up unless I'm going to be running that rom for a while. I'd like it removable but I'd MUCH rather have it there than not because I think it's good for HTC, it's something that wins over a lot of new to android type general consumers. And sales and the phones in peoples hands is better for all of us.

I like Blinkfeed. I have it set to show all the tech sites and the news I like. It does a pretty good job of summarizing the highlights. Way better than the google CURRENTS app. Although i didn't hate currents either.
I loaded viper but don't think i gave it a chance. Ive tried NOS and now on Hatka sense. Love the toggle bar and circle widgets and the built in personal hotspot.
But I'll giving Viper another go for sure. Normally I'd have about 4 to 5 restores, but with only 16 gig, i know i can't do that. I'll finishing searching for the best sense5, then back it up and go for Viper.

Currently still using Viper 1.1.3 with custom Kernel. Will update Viper soon though. I would try Sense 5 ROM but the connection in my location is just horrid.
Will NOT use Sense 5 until you can get rid of blinkfeed. Sense 4+ is good enough for me ViperDNA
lol. seems like most love Sense 5 but nobody loves blinkfeed.
I like it, it reminds me of a better 'CURRENTS'. But i'm gonna try VIPER soon,so i'm itching to see realworld customizations.

Had the Viper installed for the last few days. all i can say is wow. Not missing sense 5 one bit. The amount of customizations on this rom are just sick. But more importantly, the ease of changing these via the venom tweaks menu buttons are amazing. Can change the status bar in nearly unlimited fashion, can change fonts, can change icons, etc... All of these things can be done of course on any rom, but it's all built in with menus and buttons here. Everyday i can change my phone in so many ways without having to flash. I change my mind alot and in the past 3 days, i haven't been bored.

^^This. Precisely the reason I'm using Viper. I keep finding something new every time I go into venom tweaks
Has anyone noticed increased battery life with a custom ROM and/or kernel other than stock? I'll do my own testing when I get JTAG back, but if there's a general trend I'd be interested in hearing about it.

My battery was superb on stock rom. Lasted about 2 days of normal use.
My battery on sense 5 roms with Beastmode kernal was about 1.5 days of normal use.
I'd say Viper on it's stock kernal has been about 1.2 days of normal use. Although normal use has gone up since i have a fun menu to play with and reboot more often.
I'll be searching for the best kernal/rom combo along with battery saving tips without reducing performance over the next few days.
I personally like blink feed, but hate the Sense 5 app drawer. Everything else in Sense 5 is absolutely beautiful, and I'm generally an AOSP purist type. I'm currently running newtoroot's ROM at 320dpi with Nova launcher (because I hate the app drawer more than I like blink feed - though I wish I knew how to make it work with Nova).
Basically, Sense 5 > Viper >>>> Sense 4+
I prefer Sense compared to the custom Roms of Viper and CM10. I love sense 5
I am a fan of the very clean and very simple sense 5. I don't need all the customization that comes with Viper but it works well regardless. Just depends on what you want from your rom.
