I'm in China right now and got a bunch of RMB from my friends relatives due to taking good care of them in Canada.
Anyway I was going to spend it here before going back to Canada, and right now I'm unhappy with my BB9900 and would like a more fun phone. Is the GS2 still a good buy or should I really spend the extra and go for the nexus? Or even some other phone? Though I would like to stay with Samsung as I have had good luck with their products. I heard good things about WP7 but I'm not sure if Samsung makes a newer good phone for that.
Any insight would be great, thanks!
Yes definately still worth it!
In my eyes and im sure many others the s2 is still the best android phone out.
Yes the Gnexus has ICS, but the S2 has better hardware and ics will be on our phone in less then a month !
Also, u forgot to mention the galaxy note
or is that to big?
WP7 is good, but the marketplace is lacking in some well known apps, but i really like the lumia 800.
there
hope that helped
There are 3 phones to choose from s2,note,nexus. based upon you usage you can go for any three of these.
if you use your mobile for watching videos then note would be awesome.
if you need pure google experience go for nexus
if you want latest mods and customizations + a good phone go for s2
Galaxy S series is renewed each year in June-July, so you should get one and enjoy it for ~5-8 months, worth it I think. Got mine last month, and I've planned on upgrading to the S3 2-3 months after it has come out
Honestly, the SGS2 is too big for me. Other than that, taking into consideration that it was released almost a year ago, it's a MONSTER phone. If you can get it relatively cheap, go for it. I never for one second regretted buying it this summer
I think the Note may be too big, I have a sony tablet S so that takes care of my large screen Right now it's more between the 4.3 to 4.6" devices that is about as large of a phone as I want.
I'll probably get the SGS2.

If you have money to spend on the S3 soon and I'd recommend going with the S2. If not, stick with the Galaxy Nexus as it will still be good 2 years down the road and compatible with all applications/games out there.
Hardware-wise, the S2 is superior, just keep in mind that it will be quickly superceded by the S3 when it comes out. Software-wise, I have to say as it is the S2 has better apps built-in compared to 4.0.2 GSM GN (browser, camera software, office apps, media codecs, etc.) but again, ICS 4.0.3 is likely the last 1 or two updates than will come to the S2.

I always imagined you to have enormous hands - now I know you have delicate birdlike ones. I'm stunned
I'm debating whether or not to sell my S3 (It hasn't even arrived yet but should be here tomorrow) and buying a Nexus 4 from the play store, or just keeping the S3. I like the S3 but dislike stock anything, especially Sense and Touchwiz etc, so the Nexus is better suited to me, also 2gb ram instead of 1gb, and for cheaper. But I don't know, what does everything think, will the S3 have dev support well into the next year or two or should I jump onto the Nexus asap.
if i were you i'd keep the S3. the nexus 4 doesn't have an external sd card slot so its all internal memory which is a big deal breaker for me.
also if launchers are the main thing that you don't like, just download apex/nova launcher. problem solved. better yet install a CM10/Aosp rom and you'll get stock experience with some perks. save lots of money.
Adw launcher just realesed a huge update.

I love custom roms, so I'll definitely be installing AOSP or AOKP, I'm just wondering if we'll be okay when it comes to 4.2, if it'll be released pretty quick and everything will work?. I'm incredibly torn, which is hilarious because I know they're just phones. Anyway I just really like the look of 4.2 and the new features sound great, ideally I want a Nexus phone but if the S3 will definitely get 4.2 and everything will be good, then there's no worries there.
The thing is, I got my S3 for $460, brand new with warranty. Long story short what happened was, I bought an open box special Atrix 2, it was overheating and crashing, but I fried the motherboard and bricked it by wiring a factory cable completely wrong, had 5 volts of power running to ground, oops, so they agreed to replace it with a new one, which has a value of $319, keep in mind I've only paid $240 so far, they can't get another Atrix2 in stock, they offer $250 store credit. I keep pushing, they give me $319 store credit, purchase the S3 for $220, could have been $210 but I got the pebble blue. Anyway, it was a bit of a nightmare and if I sell the phone straight away I feel it'll all be for nothing lol.
Not the battery but the phone.Isn't there something like this will die right after warranty so people buy a new one? (Obviously it isn't exactly the same time for every same phone model, that would be too suspicious)

I bought the I9100 model when it was first released back in 2011, launched with Android 2.3 Gingerbread. Frankly speaking, I've never regreted buying this phone (at that time, it was MYR1800, more or less USD$530, considerably quite expensive compare to other smartphones nowadays).
I took my decision to root, hence broke my warranty right after the first year running stock ROM/firmware from Samsung (full of bloatwares). The best thing about this phone was the flexibility to flash numerous custom ROMs. I started off with ICS-based then moved on to JB-based such as RootBox, SlimICS/JB, AOKP-based, Cyanogenmod, and now NeatROM AOSP KK. To be honest, I've been using this phone for 3 years and still rocking wild! I'm now back to NeatROM JB 4.1.2 Aroma making it most minimalist as possible and I'm quite happy to use it for the next 1-2 more years until I have enough money to get a new one (better processor, memory, resolution, etc) which at the moment, I don't it is necessary for me switching to another phone. I only changed my battery once for the past 3 years of using this model. Other than that, I don't have any problems with the hardware compatibility namely speaker, microphone, home button, power button, and volume rockers. I can get better battery life with my current custom ROM, standby time can go up to 2-3 days light usage and 2 days normal usage and a day (24 hours) of heavy usage. I'm on Apollo regular kernel, btw and it's pretty stable that my phone hardly becomes "hot", so choose your custom ROM wisely. I don't recommend you using the stock one because obviously, why would you need another SamsungApp store, music hub, video hub, reader hub, etc. sometimes I don't know why people have multiple apps to do the same exact function on their phones such as installing Chrome over stock browser, VLC/poweramp over stock music player, Google Keep over stock S-note or memo, you get what I mean. They only take your storage and memory! Keep it to bare minimum, folks! You will be happy with your phones regardless of how long it will last before it fails to work properly.
To answer your question, as long as you keep your phone away from water/fire, it should work great until you think it will become obsolete for daily usage. I use my phone mostly for Internet browsing, music and video playing, e-mail checking, light gaming, and hardly find any issues although 80% of my experience with this phone is using custom ROM.
Hope that helps.
My wife had her S2 for 2 years before she upgraded......the only thing that failed was the USB port.....and only then because of 'mis-use'......My eldest son now uses it....without issue.
I've had my S2 for 1 year now.....I brought it AFTER the S3 was released....for 2 reasons...
1) everybody was saying how reliable it was/is.
2) there are a lot of custom ROMs for it, and (at the time) there was a lot of dev support for it.
This phone is still a 'powerhouse' and in my opinion can still hold it's own against phones that cost considerably more.......

I have had phones for 7 plus years with no problems what tends to happen is companies stop supporting the product with updates, samsung seems pretty good and you can always come here if your model is popular. If your curious how long until get a new phone that depends on your budget and the difference in tech. I have had my korean s2 shv-e120l for a years, it is not a popular version but i will probably keep it until s5 is in my budget.

Im interested how much battery life you have when you run intensive 3d game because I only get <2 hours per stock battery (ones not enough) with all turned off, uninstalled system apps (now Ive <50) and all but the game and essential for the OS frozen, screen darker than normal (ScreenFilter app)
Also what about overclocking?

Hi, I'm not sure about overclocking but I do know about underclocking/volting. I think it's fair that I keep my S2 to bare minimum, meaning it is only equipped with some basic apps to do my everyday tasks in mobile way. That's why I only have a browser, camera, music and video player, calendar, contact, phone, calculator, fm radio, gallery, file manager, messaging, and play store.
To me, if I want to play games, I'll be on my desktop PC or get a PS Vita if I'm on the move. If 70% of my daily time listening to MP3, I'll get a WalkMan or iPod, and if I like to take photos, I'll get a smart camera. If you do all, get a smartphone. I know everyone wants to cramp in everything in their phones to be able to do everything but let's be fair to our 4 years old S2. The more you cramp in all other unnecessary apps, the faster your battery drains. This is why I am more into underclocking than overclocking kind of guy.
I'm eager to get my S2 running all of the 3D games on Play Store but I think it's better that I buy the games on Apple Store instead and play them on my iPad Air (since they cost pretty much the same; save budget; wise move?) because it has better performance than S2. It sounds like I'm under-estimating S2 but this is how I keep my gadget alive without damaging it in the long run.

MYR1800 when first released in 2011? Damn that's cheap, I paid full retail price at MYR2099 but got the 1st batch of the S2... :highfive: The phone now is still alive and kicking ass with CyanFox ROM...
As the title simply asks, what are your plans for your HAM2?
I've created this thread 1) out of curiosity and 2) to show Huawei (if they ever see this) what a mistake they're making.
If you're sticking with your Mate2, vote for that! If you're going to sell it, vote for that and please tell us what your selling price is/may be, and what phone you're buying next. And if you're unsure, there's an option for that.
Hopefully this'll help other people make their next phone decision or get Huawei's act together for the US, who knows?
As for me: I'd like to sell it; possibly looking into a used Note 3.

Buying the Nexus 6 when it becomes available, and after some of the reviews.
Will probably sell this or give it to someone in the family.
Sent from my MT2L03
Im going to keep it, its a really good phone, and there is no other phone with this battery!
Selling my HAM2, will wait a few weeks and decide between the Nexus 6 and Note 4
I'm also planning on selling my HAM2. I'm interested in the Nexus 6 but want to read RL user reviews. I also would like to see if there are any Google Play editions going to be announced soon that have decent screen size and big battery. Like most new Google phones, I suspect the supply chain for the Nexus 6 is going to take a few months to get enough phones out. Maybe Moto will be a nice surprise and get enough stock out early. I guess Huawei decided the North American market isn't worth the effort. Too bad. I suspect they've quit reading North American web pages after the reaction to their announcement about not updating to KK. (I really can't believe their callous responses to posts on their FB page. "Life goes on." Given that attitude, I suspect they're miserable at responding to warranty issues.)
I've only had my phone sim in it a few times, usually it's wifi only or sharing my tablet sim with my LTE N7 and unlocked AT&T Note 8. I have too many devices and need to move them. I want to go either with my Note 2 and 8, Note 2 and this with the tablet sim, or sell everything and go with an international Note 8 with the phone sim and a cheap T-Mobile branded phone for a backup with wifi calling.
"Wait and see" is what makes sense to me. The phone still has the attributes I bought it for. I'm disappointed that the phone is being neglected, but not sure I would have wanted the KitKat update if it had come. I had enough problems with various 4.4.x versions on the Nexus 4 that I would not have been an early adopter on the HAM2. I'm not exactly a fan of Huawei after the company's failure to adequately support their product, but I still remember that they freely provided the bootloader unlock code., something not many phone manufacturers do. So I think there are a few trade-offs involved.
Keepin It
I'm keepin it because I can't find any other phone as of today that is worth selling this for to get a replacement. Maybe in 8 months something better will come a long but then again maybe in 2 months or something we will have CM. The only phablet I can see worth money is the Sony Xperia Z Ultra but I think this phone is more rounded overall. I was ok with JB last week before the announcement and I'm ok with it this week just sad. This is a $300 budged phablet I bought not no $700 phone I found out was not being supported anymore. For the $300 I paid for this the battery and phone is great. A 5.5 inch screen is not a phablet to me. 6 inches and up I need and if someone can find me a worthy contender I would gladly upgrade because i'm so mad at Huawei. But as it stands its actually in a class of its own.
@ScoobSTi I've read enough of your post to know your also going to ride this wave with me. Its almost cheaper to buy a phone from someone who is mad and give it to a developer.. hahahah JK..or am I.. hmmmm

Thought about it more myself and it's still an awesome device and I think you would still get another year out of it. I may not get the latest android wear updates after April but Pebble said they are going to support 4.3+ with the next updates and I actually prefer my Pebble steel so I'm OK with that. Android wear has really been getting better lately and I'm excited to see what lollipop brings "Torn between two lovers, feeling like a fool" you know how the song goes.

I guess I'm an odd duck. I'm KEEPING my Ham2.
The update means nothing to me. I had a 2+ year old Note1 still on 4.1.2 when I picked up the Ham2 in July, so updating isn't a priority.
I just want a device that works, is stable and has a great battery life. Ham2 fits that to a T.
I don't need bells and whistles, I don't play games. I use this as a tool for work. All my service calls are handled through a web portal,
I do a ton of email, text, scanning bar codes, few dozen photos of broken equipment etc. The OS on the device means nothing, as long as it is STABLE.I don't have time for FC's, reboots, lock ups, dropped signals etc.
Stable, battery life, good camera, clear screen, THAT is job #1 for a device.
As long as my Ham2 works, I'll keep it. Even if they did release an OS update, I'd hold off for at least a month, to make sure it was
rock solid stable before I were to install it.

well said.
I will say, it will be hard to replicate the Mate 2 battery life on any other phone for a couple of years, I'd presume. While you can certainly get a better screen and a faster phone, there's nothing on the market that even comes close battery-wise. I can get 72 hours uptime with 9 hours on screen routinely on the Mate 2. The people who have good life with the Note are getting ~20 hours uptime with 6 hours on screen.
I seem to have been getting decreased battery life, even with constant app killing, scanning, etc. so if I do switch I don't think it'll make too much of a difference.
Plus, if I do go for a Note 3, it has wireless charging... and a removable battery...

your going to fall in love with the phone just like all the rest of us. just hate the name on top
Waiting....For Now
Have decided to go back to my S3 as my daily driver. While I love the size and battery life there are just a few too many quirks that aggravate me, and one item that will be a show stopper in the near future.
1. 3rd party camera apps aren't working for me....the flash timing doesn't sync up with the shutter so you end up with dark pictures even though the phone does the double flash to focus and reduce red eye.
2. Lockscreen...ugh. Stock is nasty and the way the kernel works, replacements (I've tried a dozen plus) have delays that flash the homescreen before kicking in.
3. Screen resolution...yes, it's 720p but Huawei somehow twerked the configuration to where it's not properly recognized by many apps, especially Themer/MyColorScreen won't recognize.
4. Notifications...even with apps identified as "protected", i.e. they're not supposed to be killed when the screen goes off, seem to get cached/suspended and notifications stop.
5. Speaker...for media it does OK but as a speaker phone? Can't hear people on the other end even in a quiet room with nothing but ambient noise (yes, I'm deaf as all get out but the S3 speaker is so much better).
6. SD Card...has the damn restrictions associated with 4.3, apps like Zooper widget etc. that can back-up settings are only able to store to internal memory, not external SD. *This is from my experience so there may be something I'm missing to fix this.
7. Back-up...the stock back-up seems to work ok and a lot has been fixed with TWRP...BUT there seems to be too many issues and with nandroid/titanium not working from what I've read I have decided rooting and modding with exposed/busybox hacks is too risky for now.
8. The show stopper...My company is going to enforce encryption on BYODs soon to access email, etc. Ran encryption on the phone, looked successful, but when went to validate it failed then when I restarted the phone it went back to being unencrypted. I know 4.3 can be a bit tricky with encryption but my device is now marked as "unsupported" by my IT and will not be able to access environments.
Keeping.
Still love the screen and the battery life.
If the Mate 7 comes available next year for the U.S. market for under $500 that'll be my next phone.

Keeping . It's the best device I've had , especially considering the price/performance ratio. I knew going into this purchase that the kit kat promise wasn't credible. If you want updates spend $600+ . This device fits the bill for a lot of consumers as is . Including myself . I have devices on kit kat and the experience on the HAM2 isn't hindered at all by the 4.3 OS . At least not for me , this thing is rock solid with outrageous battery life . What's the point of having bleeding edge specs with the newest OS if it doesn't even last a regular day ?? Always looking for a charge is so annoying . With this thing i don't even have a battery indicator percentage turned on , because no matter what i can't use up all the juice in one day even if i tried . I get at least 10 hours of on screen time per charge. Who knows, maybe Huawei is gonna fire back with a positive reply after their horrendous announcement . They've been very quiet on their social platforms , maybe they're trying to work something out with the big boys over in China . Just some thoughts .
Hi guys, I bought this phone like the first day it got released and I felt so much pain in this process knowing about Oreo stuff and so on, also because I'm not so rich to afford like super duper phones and thinking "oh well, a chinese phone for 200 euros may be a good deal since they usually sell decent phones for less". I regret this thought every day by then. The lack of interest in Elephone company is what surprise me the most, they just don't give a **** about that, leaving the phone as it is, I can't even watch streams (only if I use a very old version of Twitch) and can't even watch videos from Netflix nor facebook. I would like to have your sincere opinion, if you think if this phone is to be considered dead. I wanna get rid of that, maybe selling it. I hope that there is a chance that this phone will get updated with all the bugs fixed tho.
I also bought the S8 at a presale and got it right after release. It was my companion for nearly a year but now our time is over. I liked the design and the big brilliant screen and it could be a real great phone with a better software.
I didn't have any streaming problems with youtube or netflix, but there was always trouble changing networks between mobile data and wifi. The battery did not last a full day in the end and for a deca-core device the performance was a little disappointing. I don't think there will be an oreo update or any community support in the future, because elephone already released the next generation of phones.
My advice is to sell the S8 as long as it is worth anything, I sold mine on ebay for about 170€ which was more than I expected.
Please also find all required files for rooting the Elephone S8 at:

I hope this helps.
