I bought a Xperia U a few days ago and I want to have some ICS experience. I dont want to root because of warranty.
Is official Sony ICS resource-hungry or does it worth it?
Really, it sucks.

I was very disappointed with the experience after upgrading. That's why I ended up rooting and unlocking my boot loader.
I suppose there is no way I could make a complete backup (via phone or pc) without rooting.. But if I'm wrong, make me know!
For now all I can do is thank you for your replies..! You are helping me make the correct decision =)

They still sell phones with GB? Wow.no root needed for upgrade to ICS, and if u want to revert back to GB, isn't that possible with factory reset??(someone please correct me if I'm saying something wrong)

Flash official ics via flashtool,
It will not void your warrnty!
Sent from my ST25i using xda premium
well...i have a lot of friends with XU, most of them have upgrade to ics and few of them not. And for what it's worth the phones with GB it's surely faster, sony ics for XU it's kinda a half way between performance and ics style. You have to do by your usage, if u need a phone stable and fast don't upgrade, if u wanna ics style and functions... well you may upgrade...
If u upgrade by PC companion or SEUS or flashtool, it's possible revert only with Flashtool. But i dunno if you are going to avoid warranty!
On the PC companion you can make backup of your datas not of the firmware.
So, official ics is crappy compared to custom roms? Or is it crappy on it's own?
I've just flashed the current B.100 firmware about 2 hours ago..
So far I like it, its snappy and crisp.
I've read about others having problems with GPS, but I don't use it so its not an issue for me.

I had an idea: root, install cwm, make nandroid backup, try ics..
In case I don't like it: install cwm on ics, restore gb backup, unroot..
With this method I'll keep all the bloatware (intentionally) and get my warranty back!
Is it possible to do that?
Hi all...I have an unrooted XU and upgraded to ICS....not sure it it was the upgrade or not but the phone just randomly freezes and have to pull the battery every time to rectify....is this a known issue or anyone else know of this?

My problem is that I had a Xperia x8 with not-unlockable bootloader running GB (GingerDX) and many apps that I wanted to use were for ICS+ .. I want a later OS version because of compatibility!
So I have to upgrade to official ICS and keep warrant or root and use a custom rom..
Maybe I'll sacrifice my warranty.. I think it's not too risky since I'm used to flash roms

*THANKS ALOT*!!!!!!!!
Man you should make sure you know how to do this before flashing anything........
Anyway, go to the rooting thread and download the 404 kernel ftf.
Reboot to recovery, factory reset, wipe dalvik cache, restore backup. Power off, if only reboot option is there just remove battery open flashtool and flash the ftf you downloaded above.

Will you go back to stock 4.0.4?
If yes you can do by restoring your backup. You can stay with night elf kernel. It should be compatible to ics.

You asking for everything in a rom. For a daily use rom you have to sacrifice interface like JJ's hybrid rom it is fast and smooth games worked charmed and with basic interface.
And Xperia smoothness is too good in fancy but little laggy and Ram leaker almost many HD games definitely lags.
Make a choice you're ways
(Edit)
Now you have latest rom Xperia smoothness b11.
May be its perfectly stable which you're looking for just try it.

Used Cyanogenmod 9 stable rom for some months now. Makes the phone fast. But a few bugs and small problems that makes me want to go back to GB 2.3.4
Camera is not to good, mms problems, touch feel on screen is a bit to crappy. And now i lost my wifi.. But i think that is my fault for playing with gemini app manager.
Anybody have any experience with going back from rom to stock? I have also unlocked bootloader.
So in sence i want my phone to run GB 2.3.4 and rooted so i can get rid of the bloatware if i must.
If a rom exists just as the stock i would like to know to. I guess that maby more easy to do???

I could do that but I was looking up if there is a way I could relock the bootloader and restore it with PCC?
Sent from my ST25i
I think you can re lock. Not too sure how it works tho. There are definitely guides around tho!
If you're keeping the phone for yourself tho I'd keep it unlocked and just flash cm9. It'll be far faster and smoother than stock
Sent from my Android 4.2.1 Xperia S
Couple of things.
First of all thanks for all of your help.
Secondly, I am keeping it for myself, but I'm a tad concerned about installing a custom ROM and Kernel.
I have heard of CyanogenMod and apparently they offer a near stock experience. But as Flashtool is not working for me, if I fastboot flash the boot.img then would that mean I could never revert back to stock?
Sent from my ST25i using xda app-developers app
Yea you can always revert back to stock. But I promise you'll never want too. Lol. If you already have cwm then all you need to do is download the cm9 zip and flash in recovery (following instructions in the thread as to what to wipe)
As for flashtool, have you installed all the drivers from the drivers file?
Sent from my Android 4.2.1 Xperia S
I have seen xperia acro S, S and SL that backup of TA works when restoring DRM for those who unlock their bootloader officially. Will these work with xperia 2011?
I have seen a tool on xperia Z and it works there. But flashtool has this option

Tbh, i'm new at xperia u. I've had it for the longest time without rooting/unlocking. 4.4 works for me. Sure, i experience bluetooth and video recording issues, but it works for my purposes (stable and fast rom. ART shows noticeable improvements, performance-wise). I'm not saying it's the best choice, just something to get you started.
I think its better to install this. Its better than ICS and bugless.
Or You can install Cyanogenmod 10, if you dont need xperia stuff=) This one is bugless too.
