I bought this phone on craigslist and everything seemed fine with it, but the rom seemed a bit odd and it keeps dropping calls and freezing up on some applications so i thought i'd check which rom was installed and maybe install a better one.
Turns out it is running on 4.1.9...............View attachment 2189224
When i try to enter download mode this icon appears:View attachment 2188643
And when i try to go into recovery mode i cannot select any option from the menu, the only thing it lets me do is scroll over them.
Other than that the phone boots up fine and works decently but the call quality is really low and calls drop all the time or i can hear people on the other end but they can't hear me at first.
Please help!
I've tried using Kies and Odin but the phone is not recognised. I don't think it's a driver issue as it seems they are installed properly.
Thanks in advance!
I hate being the bearer of bad news, but it's a clone
Not to be rude, but blunt. This is not something you needed an expert to tell you. Just reading it has 4.1.9 makes it obvious it is not genuine.

Well, orgive my ignorance. I'm not a complete noob but i didn't know that there were such clones. it looks just like an s3, i thought maybe they had flashed a weird custom ROM or something.

There are quite a few forums out there for these phones and some custom firmware, but if you can raise an issue with craiglist and try for refund
Try to connect it to your PC and then to KIES and check if it connects?

Again, I was not trying to be rude, just didn't want to beat around the bush. It does not take an expert. I know it is messed up for the OP, lost money, lost time, but hopefully it will never happen again to them. Also, hopefully others who might read this post think hard about buying devices from places like craigslist. Nothing wrong with it but make sure you research the device thoroughly.

Well thank you anyway guys.
I don't think complaining to Craigslist will do anything as they clearly state that they are not responsible for any transactions that take place from the adds posted there.
And it makes sense because it is the buyer who has to be looking out for this kind of stuff. I've been buying stuff on Craigslist for a long time now so i know better than to fall for shipping frauds or that sort of thing... I just didn't imagine that they made clones that looked this good.
Thanks for all your posts, you've been truly helpful.

Okay, here it goes. I was trying to get my phone to return to stock, because i had a problem with rooted phone. So, i was looking for Firmware for Returning to Stock. and i found one, and used Odin3 to force update with the firmware, then i turned on my phone... and the screen said AT&T WORLD***** or W/E!!!!... i accidently downloaded AT&T Galaxy S Captivate's firmware... and now i cant go to 'Reset Factory Mode' or 'Downloading Mode'. can anyone help me? if i just can go to downloading mode, i can fix this. is there anyway to auto-goto downloading mode when you insert USB? like un-screwing the phone and doing something? i can take any-risk to fix this. thank you

Sorry bud.. More than likely even if we could flash back the correct firmware, bml12 was probably overwritten, and we can't replace that, so you'd have a device that won't even use the cell radio.
Best bet is to disconnect the wire to the screen internally so that nothing appears on boot up, then take it back to Verizon.

No, what helped was my post on how he could handle the situation from this point forward, which I think is a reasonable suggestion given his situation.

Hey all,
I heard there is an app that you can select contacts that you do not want to text when your'e drunk. Then when you try to text them you have to solve a mathematical question or some kind of question...
I found the title for it for iphone a while ago (forgot now), but I want the android version for it.
Anybody knows the title for it?
Cheers
Dude, seriously, who the **** uses their phone when they're drunk? I love when people say "I got drunk and wiped my phone" or stuff like that. Ridiculous. Just put a complicated ****ing password on your phone before you go out drinking. Done.

If you're rooted, use CyanogenMod 7...it has "Phone Goggles" which restricts outgoing text messages and calls after a certain time and yeah you need some complicated stuff to prove you're sober before you can call and stuff.

I am not wiping my phone or anything, I should just sometimes think twice if I send a text.

Then you clearly did not go out when you were in college in a city with 40000 students going out. (And even outside that, how hard is it to imagine texting people in what bar they are, or to imagine texting a person you like/hate faster when you drank a couple?)
But this discussion is beyond the scope of this thread, each entitled to their own opinion and habits.

Probably not, if the file is corrupt there's not much you can do. You can try opening it in a video editing program and see if you can salvage the first part of it.

why would they ban someone? lol all we would do is just make another account. hahaha. But I'm a perfect little angel. so no one has to worry about me. HTC MADE A HUGE MISTAKE WHEN THEY MADE THEIR SOFTWARE FOR OUR PHONES!!!! THEY did not care about us at all. so they put the 3D in some fake format NO ONE SUPPORTS! Therefore, there is NO easy way to repair it. Sure, you might find a way...... but VERY UNLIKELY! I'd just give up.
But I'd really give up cause I have a life and don't care about stupid concerts. lol. is there NO FREE SOFTWARE that I know of that could do your task. and no costly app that would fix it because HTC can't write software and don't understand that they should use standards instead of using something no one uses.
of course I'm sure someone in here will give me bs about how wrong I am.... I don't care. if you know the answer. let us know. I have no idea other than yes sadly I have tried looking into this topic and that is what I found. it is sad. I know. I am very very sad. I am going to go cry now. *goes into a corner and cries* okay, I'm done crying..... I'm back. btw, hi everyone.... I'm happy! I'm so happy. of course everyone in here is reading this and thinking.... "what's wrong with him?" and I reply. hmmm I'm just bored and someone needs to give me a kiss for being so cool. okay. everyone... have sweet dreams. gives everyone kisses on the lips that are over 18 and female. lol!!!!!
I don't think you realize just how idiotic of a response that was. You need help. As for the op, you are most likely sol, though trying some video editing software may help you. Rom chef's suggestion may work...
Good luck!

hi everyone! I am seeking your expertise as I came upon this forum trying to help my son fix his phone. He's only 11 years old- but as we call him at home our "tech guy". He got a brand new HTC One M8 yesterday and 3 hours later - the phone was "bricked" as I have been told. Apparently, (these are his words) he "unlocked the bootloader using HTCdev, then flashed twrp, then flashed supersu.zip.
I have no idea what any of that means but apparently he did something wrong because his phone is not working and we don't know how to fix it. If you have any compassion for a frustrated Mom who's trying not to be angry with her son -- I would appreciate any advice you can give on how to fix this.
I have attached a picture of what the phone looks like when we turn it on. Not sure how to get picture in post.
Thanks a bunch!!

I'm going to venture to guess that the process will be entirely too long and tedious for someone not well versed to follow and could potential end in disaster. The phone isn't bricked since the main recovery menu pops up. I'd suggest looking on craigslist for someone locally to help you guys out. Unless someone here can offer a quick fix, i'd much rather you find someone that has experience to fix this in person. Sorry if that's not the answer you were looking for but that would probably be your best bet

Thank you for your responses! Much appreciated. Believe it or not - this kid fixed it all by himself. Basically (remember I am not technical) he unlocked the boot loader then flashed a ROM onto an SD card and was able to load. Don't think I worded correctly - but it's fixed and working fine. WHEW!!
I will certainly keep the info to this forum handy because something tells me that I will be visiting again with this child..................
Have a great evening!!

I started getting into ROMs your sons age. I am 15 now. I have hard bricked a Motorola Atrix 2, meaning it won't turn on at all. That's cool your son is a tech wizard too, it will do him a lot of good and a lot of bad. You should educate him about Ubuntu and let him screw with that on a PC. Much safer messing with a computer than a phone. Anyways, glad he got it working. ?

Me too! Im 14 now.
The M8 is my first android phone and custom roms seem to get better and better.
The phone was not "bricked", and you are using the term improperly. Your son simply did something to make the phone unable to boot into the Android operating system. This state is usually easy to recover from, as long as the proper steps are known. So that is not a brick.
Itis of course your choice whether to let your kid modify (mod) your phone in such ways. And part of the modding process is always going to involve some hiccups (for even the most experienced users) and figuring out how to fix them. So I'm glad your son figured it out.
On the other hand, both you and he should be fully aware (if not already) that modding the phone may void the warranty, and also permanent damage (a true "brick") is possible if he doesn't fully understand what he is doing. Such damage is not covered by warranty.
To the OP (original poster), please do not create multiple thread asking the same question.
Its against forum rules, and makes it super confusing for those trying to help you.

Oh, I'm sorry. Are you counting the on contract price? Okay. Well, throw it on the ground or drop it in a pool or give it to a child to ruin. Now go back to the store to get a replacement and see how much it costs. You also signed a contract and took on an extra monthly data plan... For a child. The fact that you have no clue how much the phone actually costs explains a lot, actually.
I'm not concerned about your wallet. You clearly have more money than sense, so rather than crying here, just go buy a replacement phone for him to ruin. While you're at it, go ahead and get him an espresso machine.

Seems like she asked a question to a problem and it was answered. I'm not sure how taking a personal shot at a newcomer to the forum accomplishes anything. Her decision to buy her son anything is hers and hers alone, why inject your opinion into it, much less insinuate that she has no sense. It comes off as aloof and petty. This doesn't seem to be in the spirit of this forum. Flame away.

The actual retail cost of the device is $639; which would also be the replacement cost of this device. The on-contract price of $199 is just a subsidized cost, which the carrier basically spreads over the length of your 2-year contract.

I basically said the same thing to him that you did to me, but a bit more creatively
I and i guarantee most other devs would be much more willing to spend our time helping someone if they cared enough about what theyre asking to make it clear what that is in the first place! He doesnt appear to want to help himself, so why even bother starting a thread about it?
Responding like that does a lot towards relieving the stress that gets built up if you stay in these forums for too long at a time.
