So I understand we cannot flash Roms without a custom recovery , but can we debloat the device? Like remove all the Verizon and Samsung apps that come preinstalled? Also what else can be done with just root access?
Sent from my SCH-I545 using xda app-developers app
Well of course you get the benefit of being able to run apps that require root. You can debloat as well like you asked whether your preferred method is using tibu or root explorer to actually delete them (my preferred method), and if you dont like using either of those you can always disable them in the app manager. And you dont need root that route. In the themes and apps sub forum there are some mods for me7 as well.

What are some good things we can do with root without having boot loader unlocked? I've always been able to install custom roms, never been in this situation before. Damn verizon

Debloat, maybe some theming (not sure about this one), backup data, underclock CPU, edit system files like the build prop, etc.

Yes. Think if it as 2 levels of a hack. (I'm no pro so thus is a very generic description). With root you can do many more things than an unrooted phone (I rooted just to load all the apps in the multi window drawer). However, with an unlocked bootloader you can do even more (custom roms, overclock, nandroid.....which is a TOTAL backup of your phone, that can restore it to it's wxact state of when you nandroid it). I am rooted but did not unlock my bootloader (yet).
Sent from my SCH-I605 using Tapatalk 2
You can definitely make a nandroid with a locked bootloader, my dude.

Lol.....like I said, I'm (obviously) no pro. This is my first samsung. Is there an app or toolbox or something I can get? Or do i have to mess with odin (I'm still not even clear as to what odin is). I used the app to inject root and when I try to boot in to recovery it warns about customs roms so I just cancel it. Can I do that and proceed without screwing uo my phone?

Don't mess with odin unless whatever instructions you're reading call for it. Flash roms with a custom recovery.

I'm not unlocked though? I can flash roms with just root? Sorry......still learning. I've only had HTC in the past and they were unlocked. I really just want to nandroid. What's a custom recovery that I can use without being unlocked? Thanks!

I don't know if you should be messing around with this phone at your tech level, brotha. Now you're asking a whole bunch of questions and I don't feel like being an android 101 guy tonight.
Honesty, google is where it's at. It's how I learned. Wikipedia, too.

Too late. I tried to backup in CWM and got that awful screen telling me i had unauthorized software and to head to verizon (and i haven't installed the OTA). Had to restore to stock and then reroot. I thought i had a grasp of this but i guess not.
Sent from my SCH-I605 using Tapatalk 2
The main feature to unlocking the Bootloader is to have a custom kernel. Which handles the way the CPU works, which in turn with a custom kernel improve performance, and battery life.
I was under the impression you had to be rooted to unlock the bootloader but I guess not now
Be patient. No need to hurry. Read up until you have more confidence and context. Sounds like you are learning fast though.

How did you confirm that it didn't work? Device status "Modified" after using ExynosAbuse usually means it worked. I would try to install Titanium backup (Tibu) or some other program that requires root and if it works then you know you have root.
If you have root use Tibu to freeze SDM 1.0 to keep the update from happening if you want to use the first developer created method to unlock your boot loader so that you can flash ROMs. You can use the later new method to unlock the boot loader if you accept the update.
I have titanium back up but it says I dont have root access... basically what im wanting to know is, is it okay it try another root method even though it says my device is modified...

Not only, NO! But HELL NO! If you're on MDK do not take update to ME7. You can, however, flash roms based upon ME7 - - like Hyperdrive.

Now, you cannot flash a custom recovery nor custom roms. I hope you gain much by moving perhaps a gig of apps to your SD card - - you have paid a very high price to do so. Now your only option for custom roms is safestrap. I wish you the best of luck.

I will not be running other Roms. Just would like a nandroid backup. Is safestrap safe for this?

Look at the general questions area.... I think somebody talks about ss and nandroid... they said that it can backup roms, but not stock.
This sounds plausible because HashCode, the SS Dev, said that he bas to work more on SS before you can do anything with stock rom... even backup

Because people think as long as they can flash ROMs, it's unlocked. You and I know it's only a workaround, but most users don't.
I'd much rather have to use Loki than SS, as cool as SS sounds.

Don't update. You'll lose your ability to have a real custom recovery. Just stay on MDK and root. Then you can go ahead and flash a 4.3 ROM.

Should i factory reset and root before activating the phone with verizon?
I personally would just root, install custom recovery then wipe. After that pick a rom as most have ota updates disabled. Or install titanium backup pro and freeze the update apk's (I forget the file names)

You got SU permission? Download the CAM loki zip that's is in another forum here. Instructions are there for ya. Super simple and easy as long as you have root permission
unless you on another bootloader than MDK. Only MDK can install recoveries. All others use safestrap

I suggest you do some serious reading here in XDA and there are a number of youtube videos also. Unless you have a S4 that came with MDK base, you can not load any custom recovery out there like phiz or twrp or Cwm and you limited to safestrap and the roms that are specifically compatible with safestrap. Good luck to you.
Yes I definitely agree with reading a lot.... borderline till your eyes bleed. Lol
Joking aside I've been working with android development for a few years now and the s4 can be difficult to understand for someone new to it.
If your on a build that allows you install a recovery then your in luck (mdk). However if you're like the rest of us on a locked bootloader then you need to use the safe strap process.
It's not hard just need to do your research.
Good luck

Ok, so your on mj7 which means you need to get root if you don't already have it, install safe strap 3.7 and then load a custom rom to one of its rom slots.
I would read the safe strap thread to get more info before you jump into it.

You can flash some custom ROMs, but no custom recovery, no CM (until someone ports it to the Touchwiz kernel), and no AOSP (ditto).
For rooting, go to http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2565758
Read the Safestrap thread in that forum for more info on what you can do to boot custom ROMs.
My phone is already rooted, but I'll read over the thread for more info!!
