I said I wasn't going to get the s4 but here I am with it. So I'm sure I'll end up with the g2 and note 3. Its a bad addiction always having to get the newest device.

All in all. I am very pleased with this phone...however I do tend to agree with the CEO of Motorola though..
What can the S4 do that the S3 can't? (That really matters)...
Most of the upgrades are gimmicky and will be applied to the S3 with 4.2 update.
For me the note 3 is really going to have to be a game changer to move to that device.
Truth is I'm clueless at which manufacturer is the right direction to move in after this phone...

I think bigger screen, better processor and spen make sense to upgrade at least for me. After Note 3 tho i don't think I will change phones for a while. It would be nice to have the Moto X features with the next gen specs but who knows when that will happen.
Verizon tried locking the S3 down and failed. They are successful till now, but who knows. However, with AT&T going the same path as Verizon, wouldn't blocking off the developers be the death of the Samsung brand (eventually)? The only thing people would be able to do effectively would be developing apps, and we know that this has not worked very well for other platforms (oranges and doors)
True that I can get a developer S4, but I do like the Samsung bloatware for some new apps and the gestures (And the saving $$$)

I actually wouldn't hate the bloatware if it wasn't 9gb; I didn't care to spend an extra 25 dollars for a sandisk microsd card.
I was prepared to send my GS4 back to Verizon and wait it out a few months and pick up a used GS3 on off eBay. Well GS3 16GB are going for nearly the same price as my on contract S4, so in the end I am keeping it . . . for now. If the GN3 turns out to be a real WOW device I will sell and move on, but 3GB of RAM is not the big motivator, it must be available in 32GB or 64GB on Verizon and have at least 23+GB of usable space or else why bother.
The G2, just doesn't hold much interest, no expansion card so you get what you got internal and that is never enough for me. Plus that .2 of extra screen is really the soft keys at the bottom so its not an upgrade over the S4, sure S800 processor but so what the GN3 will have an S800 and 3GB of RAM.
I'd gladly switch to the moto x if I could find a straight up trade... the processor might be older but I like the idea of it being optimized. Honestly a device shouldn't need to have these work horse processors to run smoothly (see any Windows Phone), but that's the nature of the OS. Plus this thing is huge...I have little hands and I feel like I'm in one of those burger King commercials

Upgrade? The s4 is what, 3 months old?
After having the S3, Note 2 and now the S4 I am good for a while. I have my S4 rooted and I'm liking Hyperdrive a lot. No upgrade until next year sometime at the earliest.

It's tough for me to say this, as I was a longgg time HTC user,
Eris, Inc1, Inc2, Inc4, Rezound, DNA, (I'm even apart of the HTC Elevate) then I got the SG3, then SG4, and I love both the SG3 and SG4, but I won't be selling this SG4 and paying the difference for the same phone but with an unlocked bootloader.
I would rather use HTC dev unlock even than have just root and no option to flash ROMs.
We will have to see, it's hard to say if anyone is even close on the bootloader because you'd think that
1) they would want to wait for the bounty to get as high as possible but
2) what if another team is doing the same and the one above has no idea?
I hope that's not the case, and if it is the teams team up and crack the code.

I prefer HTC's Sense to Samsung's TouchWiz. All my previous experience has been with HTC phones and I like them but......
No Micro SD card?
Non-replaceable battery?
Not if it were free! The above "features" make the phone totally useless to me.

I was a long time HTC user. I had the XV6800, TP2, ThunderTurd, and the Rezound. But the lack of software updates and just generally bad customer service and QC on their later devices really turned me off. That and they seem to refuse to listen to their customers when it comes to batteries and SD cards. (IMO). I mean what does it hurt to include them even if they don't get used? That, to me, was the straw that broke the camels back. I don't like paying HTC/Samsung/etc a premium just for them adding memory. Just the same as I don't like paying Asus, or whomever a premium for adding a few extra gig of ram or HDD space(or in my case SDD space). I'll add it myself and save the money. But don't force me to do it your way or you won't get my business.

and its locked again,
I had the GS4 but without an unlocked bootloader I could not risk wasting my upgrade. If it gets there I will be glad to consider it again, if I can get a 32GB with MDK I would consider it again. For now I am looking at the GN3 which to me is a great well rounded device that will likely get root, but also may have issues with bootloader.
For once I could not see me keeping a phone for 3 months only to pay the difference to upgrade and since I was late the GS4 party I could get out before it was too late.
The HTC One is an awesome phone, but Verizon again likes to offer only 16GB & 32GB phones so I don't think the 64GB will ever arrive and if it does it will be months later.
Also add insult to injury, HTC Dev after 1 day NO LONGER UNLOCKS the HTC One on Verizon. They got that door closed pretty F'n fast.

Would a JB OTA from HTC/VZW would help progress? Not holding my breath.. Asked HTC on FB:
"We’re still reviewing our devices to see which phones are the best candidates to upgrade to Jelly Bean. We’ll prioritize most recent devices first and go from there. Thank you for your patience. See http://s.htc.com/Wj0G08 for more details."
Looks like there is a chance since the Rezound has more than 512MB of RAM. Seems they are only upgrading phones with more than 512MB of RAM. I know the latest Sense won't work on the Rezound and don't really care about that. Only interest in this is further progressing our JB AOSP ROMS.
This device will never see official JB. Plus it would take ages for them to release kernel source.. When that happens it'll probably be RIP Rezound.
They said our devices can't run sense 4.. Obviously it can. Even if htc put out jb updates, Verizon wouldn't allow it because then you wouldn't buy a new phone

Sense 4 runs on our device but I assume not every feature works as intended. I don't think jellybean is going to come officially.
They would much rather put the man power on what makes them more money rather than what did make them money. Not only that but the Rezound wasn't that well received.

Definitely a little irritating to read that a phone from the same generation as ours has an official JB release.
On a side note, thank you devs for picking up where HTC refuses to go.
It's not going to happen, sorry. HTC one X just got android 4.1 this week. Poor DROID incredible 2 folks are still waiting on ics.
Go look at the aosp roms in the rezound original development thread. I am running infection, which is based on android 4.2.2, at this very moment.

Im done with HTC.
Razr was released 3 days after rezound and it's getting JB.
I was thrilled when I moved from t-mob to verizon, The Rezound was like my old Sensation's big brother. After my GFs Razr getting JB dropped on it last night - kinda upsets me. I don't know who to blame. HTC, or Verizon - Either way, This is my last HTC device. Love the hardware, hate the post purchase software support.

I know it's an old topic & i'm not giving it the ol' dirty bump for no reason.
I emailed Verizon about the Razr getting JB and politely expressed my dissatisfaction with the Rezound being left behind. This was my answer.
So far your phone is up to date with the latest software approved by HTC and we have not yet been informed of any further updates. It's great that you have kept it up to date, it's the best way to make sure your phone is working well. I would advise to contact your phone manufacturer to see if they have any additional information on potential upcoming patches. HTC can be reached by dialing 866-449-8358.

Guess they consider the Global Leak the 'most up to date' - cause that's what i'm running. haha.
i'm still done with HTC.
This Rez is most likely my last HTC too, until locked batteries last 2 days & cloud storage truly renders SD cards useless.
Did Verizon know you were referring to the RUU when you were talking about being up-to-date? Hehe.

Like I said over at the BAMF forum; it's too bad because this phone never had its full potential realized. Quite frankly to me it would seem like this phone could handle the latest version of android with the latest version of sense with no problem, but c'est la vie, you cant win them all

To sum this up Im done with htc as well.
If all these manufactures can update phones that were release the same time the rezound why cant htc?
granted we finaly got ics but lets see the razor had gingerbread to ics to jelly bean.
Saying that I feel like the build quality and hardware on this phone is amazing, from the gps insta lock to solid radios someone at htc knows what there doing in that department. Unfortunately whoever designs the power system really needs to check there calculations on battery size maybe move a decimal point or probably forgot a negative i don't know i mean a 1600 mah battery for a smartphone my dumb phone had a battery that large.
I do see why they haven't updated the rezound it didn't sell well and the device was only available on verizon(not a huge market share around the globe). They also wont make any money updating a device. I would think customer loyalty would be enough incentive to keep up on a device at least for two years. In my views it would make them money in the future because I would by another htc device again but since its so easy for them to abandon a device kinda make me wonder if they will do it again and I'm not willing to stake a 2 year contract on that. I've seen many manufacturers step up to the plate and keep old devices up to date.
So far I like the direction most manufacturers are going such as the galaxy s4(still has removable/large battery and sd card slot) and Motorola maxx phones. They plan on updated the galaxy s2 to 4.2.2 and that phone is older than the rezound. Also if I can get 2 days on a phone that would be awesome I would be willing to part with a removable battery.
Htc has been lacking in three key areas on all there devices. Low capacity non removable batteries, no sd cardslot/or large capacity memory on verizon phones, no updates for older devices. It seems like htc doesn't really get what will really help sell phones. To me there priority is looks and putting a glossy finish on the ui, they dont bother in key areas such as battery life and updates which actual matter to me. (they do a good job in radios and gps stuff). To me it seems like there basing their phones on iphones. If I wanted a phone like an iphone no sd card, no hdmi out, non removable battery I would buy an iphone. I want an android phone that fills these needs.
At this point my next device will be Samsung or Motorola(because they have solid radios and biggest battery for a mobile phone) I did have a bad experience with the droid charge which kinda turned me off from Samsung phones but the s3 is a huge improvement and nice device.
Main reason I've stayed with this device so long is the amazing devs that have help make this the device it should be. (thank you devs)
So to end untill htc makes a phone that last all day on heavy usage and decides to support a device for 2 years I will not be a customer.
I challenge htc to make me eat my words!!!
Hell if google can update their nexus phones even the older ones. Why cant htc and all the other phone manufacturers do the same. It's safe to say google has a lot more on their plates than the other manufacturers. Why my next phone will be a nexus. I love my n7.

Carrier testing. Carrier approvals. Ignoring older devices in lieu of new devices that could earn more, new money. That's why the Galaxy Nexus on VZW a flop, imo. Too much regulation - especially when features such as Google Wallet are blocked.

HTC is really turning me away with the lack of SD card slot, non removable battery, and now this. Yea, I'm sure our talented devs will be able to overcome this obstacle, but when will HTC stop trying to make their devices more and more secure!!?? I had bought nothing but HTC phones for the last 7 years! A few months back though I decided to make my white Evo LTE (Also have a black one that I pre-ordered) a backup phone and purchase a Note 2, since the HTC One didn't impress me and I had new phone fever, which I always catch every 10-14 months. This was a big change for me! I've been using nothing but HTC since my WinMo days, and HTC was the only brand Android phone I've owned!! I was shocked at how easy Samsung is to root. After rooting, I searched for hours to see if there was anything else that I needed to do before flashing. I'm so used to worrying about achieving S-Off that it just seemed to quick and easy to already be done, and I was just certain that I had to be missing something! I had heard that Samsung doesn't lock down their phones like HTC does, but just had to make sure before moving on. Anyway, I honestly expected to really miss HTC and quickly regret my purchase. I have to say though, the Note 2 is by far my favorite Android phone that I've owned! Still though, I'm really hoping to see HTC announce a phone with a mid 5" display, SD card slot, AND a removable battery!! I've read some rumors about upcoming phones, and I've already got my hopes up! I think HTC giving Verizon the J Butterfly (Droid DNA) was a Huge mistake!! HTC has gotta start putting their phones on EVERY carrier! Not only that, but they've gotta give the customers the features that they want! Lastly, put an end to this locking bootloaders and making OTA's more difficult to share/flash!! If the carrier wants to lock the bootloader, then let them do it (like Verizon and AT&T both have done previously)!! HTC has to start becoming more dev friendly though, as that's a big part of the Android community!! Sure, there are users who never flash and have no idea what S-Off even means, so having an unlocked bootloader won't affect them in any way whatsoever anyways. They'll have no clue whether it's locked or not, nor will it matter to them! The users who do modify their phones and do want their bootloader unlocked will be much more likely to buy an HTC phone knowing that it isn't locked down!! Heck, the Droid DNA is having trouble even gaining root access after its last update!! I know a dev, who's roms I(and I'm sure many of you did as well) used to run on my OG Evo and Evo 3D, who has a DNA and is anything but happy with HTC right now!
Anyway, sorry for the rant, I'm just a huge HTC fan and have been for many many years, and I'm just truly disappointed by their approach to the Android community at trying to make their phones less developer and user friendly!!! If they would just give the users what they want then I think we'd see HTC battling Samsung for the #1 spot instead of struggling to keep their head above water like they are now. I would LOVE to see HTC be the top phone manufacturer, but I'm afraid that day won't come unless they start to loosen up their restraints........

I have no idea what's to come, but the last two years, HTC/Verizon has released something between Thanksgiving and Christmas (Rezound and DNA). At this point, I'll wait.

Looks like, for CDMA, its the G2, note 3 and thats pretty much it. The moto x is cool but I think the always listening feature (provided by a dedicated core) is a feature of the snapdragon 800 so most new phones should support it. Makes sense to wait until novemberish. Thank you.
Honestly, like a couple replies above.. I would wait... Typically a launch device will have some bugs and kinks to work out.. Plus, I agree that Verizon may still have something up their sleeve for later this year.. I think holding off until closer to Thanksgiving or even Christmas is a good plan... Plus, if you wait, and nothing comes about, chances are you can get the One for $149.99 or less perhaps on contract... You just never know with Verizon.
I think the One is a great device, but spec-wise, it's almost identical to the DNA.
I do like how the One is all aluminum though, it just has a really great feel in your hand. Buuuut, I really hate the lack of a capacitive recent apps button; I really dig the standard 3 button layout. I just wish more manufacturers went for the soft key layout. I've been really eyeballing that LG G2

Iam speculating/hoping that variant of butterfly s aka DNA2/DNA+ shows up during the holiday period over there
DNA | ⓣⓐⓟⓐⓣⓐⓛⓚ | TF300T
Selling the DNA for the One would not be worth it unless you want a smaller screen. The One may look prettier but the DNA has some better features IMO...larger screen, wireless charging, larger screen. Lol
I have used the One and just prefer the DNA. But to each their own.

A screen that large is just overkill IMO; I already can't reach my back button my DNA with my thumb. Fortunately, there is LMT launcher, which actually allows me to use my phone with one hand again :good:

Try a cm-based ROM with Pie.
As for the OP, just wait it out. I don't see a phone I really want yet. The DNA is reaching it's first birthday but it still is blazing fast and has a great screen, and as far as roms there are a bunch available. I also have an S4 and the speed difference is unnoticeable and the ROM selection is similar. The only thing it has over the DNA is the IR blaster and SD card which I don't even use. At this point upgrading will only get you higher benchmark scores but nothing you would notice in day to day use.
I doubt Verizon is getting another HTC phone this year. I'm thinking they were originally going to skip the One and go DNA2 put there's no need for both phones. Verizon is no about giving us options.
Don't forget besides the larger screen with an already rediculous PPI the DNA has an 8mp camera that's capable of taking incredible photos.
With the Sense5 ROMs well be getting tomorrow we'll just be missing "boomSound".
I am thinking of selling mine for the nexus 5/4+. It is rumored to be available on all carriers, I just hope Google puts their foot down and doesn't let Verizon eff it all up like the Gnex.
And who knows, since it will be holiday time you might still get 250 for the DNA.

I still love my DNA but I also really like the One. Although I don't like the One enough to sell my DNA. Don't really see a point. Just gonna ride my DNA out for the remainder of the contract and get whatever kickass phone comes out when its upgrade time.

I am ALL over that 5.9" behemoth! Great to hear there is "confirmed" rumor by a very reliable source.
You are up for porting a Sense 4+ based ROM to it though...right? LOL JK I'll have to learn to live with Blinkfeed I suppose.
And hopefully Moonshine and/or RevOne will still work for that "thing" we all like to do to our phones!

They just launched 3 new moto droids at once and will have the moto x soon (probably about as long of a delay as the One) so they have no problem over saturating.
With the impending 4.3 update with sense 5 the dna will be a totally different phone. So I would wait for the update then wait til the phone losses that new phone feel and then see what's available to upgrade to

Greetings,
I'm finally getting sick of my rezound and I'm thinking about switching to the S4. I'm planning on keeping my unlimited plan so I'll likely be purchasing my next Verizon phone outright. I'm a big fan of the stock Google experience but I need the Verizon coverage map with all the work travel I end up having to remote areas.
The S4 seems like my best bet. My question is, do I:
1) Buy a used S4 on swappa. The discount over a new model is *very* attractive to me.
2) Buy the S4 new.
3) Buy the S4 Dev edition new.
4) Wait for something different.
I'm leaning towards buying used on Swappa but there's a good chance it'll be ME7, right? Then I'm stuck with a locked bootloader and touch wiz until some new developments. (By the way, how are the S4 AOSP roms? More stable than my rezound ones were I hope?) What would you suggest?
Thanks for your help.

I don't really see any point in buying the S4 new if you're buying outright. At that point just get the dev edition. If you're looking for a discount on Swappa, try and get one that is MDK, I know I saw at least one there that was already on CM10.1 so you know that one isn't all locked down. But I'm gonna bet those types of things are also selling at higher prices.
I wouldn't bother waiting. It seems that there is always some new device on the market. If you wait for a phone to be unlocked (which, by the way, may simply never happen), most likely before or by the time that happens a newer, attractive device will emerged, but probably be locked down. Wait for the unlock on that and the same thing will happen. Meanwhile you're stuck on your dying device. It's not worth it. Buy the device you want. Don't go in with the assumption of an unlock though. If you end up with ME7 as your only option, only buy it if you are actually willing to live with TouchWiz. If it gets cracked that's a bonus, but don't operate on the assumption that that is simply going to happen. Even with HC and other talented people working on it, it's not a given.
Best of luck with your purchase

Ask questions on swappa, like build number, etc. I know when I sold a phone on swappa, I detailed that the bootloader was unlocked, and what to do for recovery, etc.. I would expect many others would do the same. I can tell you that personally I really enjoy the S4, my new one came with ME7 already updated so I have not been able to ROM it up, but I have root, debloated, and using Nova launcher this phone is really slick. Add that to safe strap release being eminent and its about to get interesting for even the ones who missed the Loki option.
As for the stability of the roms, can't say from personal experience, but I will say this phone has a whole lot more attention from devs even being as locked as it is then the Rezound ever did because of how popular it is, so stability is almost guaranteed to be better.
What he said. If you're willing to spend the cash get the Dev edition. If not wait for a MDK to show up on swappa. Or choose a different one all together.
I'm loving my Dev s4.

I came from a rezound as well. No regrets. S4 is a great phone, great battery life, and you can't cook an egg on it after 15 minutes of Web browsing. It does have a weaker antenna than any other phone I've owned, but if you're decent-good area you'll be fine. I would go fire dev edition since it's unlocked.

Used an upgrade on a different line with the device transfer loophole to retain unlimited. Really happy with this phone so far, even if it is all bloaty/touchwizy/locked. I'll be keeping a close eye on that safestrap thread. Thanks for the responses.

On Swappa you can ask questions of or request info from the seller before purchase... such as requesting they provide the tell you the output from settings/more/about phone/baseband version as well as build number... Or asking how they were able to successfully avoid the OTA etc.
Gave the Rezound to my sister.

I'm thinking of picking up the S4 in 32 gigs. I've read through post and still am unsure, but there currently isn't a method to unlock the bootloader and install a custom recovery correct? Also will I still be able to root and use google wallet?

My gf had an HTC that took a dump on her, so she's not getting another. Also, my HTC was horrible on updates so I'll pass. Especially the camera and no battery/SD card slot.
I could care less if the phone was made out of aluminum, titanium, silver, platium. I always use a case which covers the phone.

the one thing I like about the one is how clean sense 5 is compared to touch wiz. If I were to pick up the S4 I would love to turn it into a GPE.
Hey guys. So my upgrade will be in March which isn't far away and I'm looking for a new phone. I'm very disappointed with the gs4 on Verizon since the bootloader is locked. Yes, I have safestrap but I love AOSP vs Touchwiz. I've looked up some phones coming out this year such as gs5 and HTC one+ (m8). I really liked the design of the HTC one and wish I bought that over the gs4. Just wondering what you guys would get next. The gs5 or something different since i almost feel like Samsung is following apple's tracks. Also do you even like the gs4? Let me know what you all think..

Love the GS4 (besides the whole bootloader lock down) but I'd be willing to wager that the gs5 will be just as if not more locked down.

Thats what I'm assuming too. So i am guessing you are getting the s5?
Love what S4...what bootloader? I had my best times with the DX and its locked bootloader. This whole BL thing is so overblown with the S4. Repetitive threads and posts about it...it's like a broken record.

Don't like Samsung's attitude toward customers.
Probably won't buy another Samsung device. Like the device, don't like the company.
We'll see with the GS5. I doubt I'll bite.
Having the microSD support is compelling but, I can get by without it now that Meenova has the keychain USB-OTG adapter from microSD cards.
We'll see what LG and HTC come out with.
I like the Sony, but Verizon and Sony are like oil and water.
From all reports, the S5 is going to be a beast. I, for one, plan on picking it up the day it's released.
I'll probably stay with my MDK S4 that's on its way to me for a long while. If that one should break and I need a new one... Hard to say what I'd do. The S4 is awesome, and I'm sure the S5 will be an amazing phone, but like stated above, let's be honest, they're going to have that S5 locked up so tight its probably going to be hard to do anything on it.
If the G2 has the removable battery and external SD card, I'd be all over it.

I'll probably keep my s4 For 2 or 3 years...that's my usual period. Besides, the improvements become less and less.
