No data plan, what settings?

I don't have a data plan so I don't want my phone always looking for 3G and edge
what would I need to do to disable those and still be able to receive calls and texts or is that even possible?

Go into settings, wireless and network, mobile networks, network mode, gsm only
Gsm only = 2g
Wcdma = 3g
auto = both

k done that, and should i check packet data and data roaming?
I use a different method:
Settings-->Wireless and Network-->Mobile Networks-->Access Point Names-->T-Mobile US-->scrol to the bottom where it says APN Type. Change it to MMS.
What this does: It disables 3G and 2G/Edge all the time EXCEPT when your phone is sending or receiving a picture message. In this case, your vibrant will connect to 2G/3G and send/receive the picture message. It will then turn them off again. You do not get charged data for sending picture messages.
Experience: I do not have a data plan either. Have been running my Vibrant for half a year like this.

It's needed for data connection. Google your provider's apn, then go to Wireless and network settings, mobile networks and in apn, add apn. Configure as provided.
i am using singtel( singapore line)
when i go to my mobile network , there's only use packet data , data roaming , access points name(when click its empty, and there's no add option ) use only 2g network and network operator . so how i gonna add apn???

Mms,

Hi I wanted to know how do I set my phone to sent mms without me turning on my 3g,I know that I have to use 3g to send but my question is if I'm on Wi-Fi how do I set my phone to automatically go into 3g mode,I have to put on my 3g manually? When sending a mms

With my GT-I9100 (Galaxy S II) I have to turn on my data to download a mms, so you may have to do the same. Make sure your APN settings are set to default, and when you turn on Data, make sure Packet Data and Data roaming are on as well. When you finish sending or downloading a mms, turn off the data.
I don't have a 3g or 4g data plan with my network so I just use the EDGE data which charges me a few extra cents when I turn it on to download or send mms.

[Q] Choosing which mobile data band to use ?

Hello all . I am wondering is there way to change which data band mobile uses in order to send/receive internet data ? . What i mean is when i turn on mobile data . I notice it switchs between H or H+ or 3G ,
it changes between them automatically .
So my question is can i manually choose which band for mobile to use ? I want it to use only EWAP or just HSDPA . To save data and mobile battery
Thanks in advance !

Network Mode
You need to go to Settings - More Settings - Mobile Networks - Network Mode .. there you you click on WCDMA Only.. this will give you the change to stay at all times on 3G, but the Icon change you see depends on the 3G Network Coverage of your country, so it will still change automatically on this part.

3G data access no working on a n7100

I bought two phones one a N7100 Chinese clone with 4.1.9 and another Phone running 2.3.3. Insert Sim card in both and APN info. Is set by the network but neither will allow any data access.
Check settings with provider (Smart) they say the settings are correct but still no data access (wifi access works fine)
Here is the weird thing if I put the n7100 in hotspot mode other devices can access 3G data(internet) when connected to it. How can that be ? Isn't Hotspot mode using the same apn settings as when accessing the net directly?
Can someone explain what's going on behind the scene with both. Oust trying to figure out why data access one way but not the other on the same device.
