just got the s4 with the old build but - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S 4

the new software is automatically downloading. how do i stop it or do i have to quickly root and unlock the bootloader before it downloads and installs?? what are my options? i turned the phone off in the time being.
im new to android as i left iPhone so explanations might have to be easy for me to understand lol

You can pull the Sim card and root and unlock first. Or defer the update and root and unlock. Once rooted if you want to stay stock freeze or erase the system/SDM.apk and that will stop trying to send you the update.

how do i defer the update it seems to automatically be doing it?

Shut it off, pull the battery and SIM card. Power it on
If it already downloaded it should ask to install or defer. Defer and root immediately.

[APP] Undeletable Theft Protection

Ok, here is a riddle to solve for ya:
Theft protection software is crucial these days on every smartphone and chosing the right one is not really easy. I've only been using SeekDroid and have been thinking about trying Prey so far, but while I read an article about Theft Aware functioning beyond factory reset of the phone, this riddle came to my mind:
What if the phone gets stolen by someone knowing how to flash a new ROM or read about it? I've got 4EXT (always latest version) installed - is there some software that integrates into recovery and cannot be deleted without the correct code or something?
Oh, and before you answer: Keep stuff like "naa dude, that'll never happen" to yourself. Thanks.
You can try avast it writes its own partition so a factory reset or flashing a Rom won't work check it out

Thanks. Where does it write this partition?
Is it undeletable even through recovery?
Try cerberus. Amazing anti-theft. And to answer your question, nothing is safe from a standard/CWM recovery. It can wipe anything. TWRP supposedly has a recovery either just finished or in the works which is encrypted and requires a password to use, but I don't know for sure.
As for avast, I'm fairly sure it doesn't write a new partition. It just installs it to system.
I'm using avast, seems ok at the moment, not needed to use the anti theft yet.
Adding a pin code to 4ext recovery would be an awesome idea! Perhaps its possible to do?

Because they're honest. I'm pretty sure ANY anti-theft app can be un installed by flashing a ROM (more specifically by wiping data and system). Only by locking your bootloader and recovery can this be gotten around.

Are there other methods to root our device that has 2.xxx firmware? I just got a replacement phone so it's up to date and therefore the current root method won't work with it.

Not to perpetuate this thread in the wrong section (God forbid), but do you mean that it's possible to RUU and S-Off a stock 2.4 device? My friend just got one, and is stuck with a locked bootloader, too.
Has anyone tried/confirmed that this works?

That's what I'm curious of. I'm reading up on a thread for people that accepted the OTA, but I haven't come across any successful attempt at RUUing back to 1.2 (or, whatever), so the bootloader can be unlocked, and the device can be rooted/S-OFFed. A confirmation of whether or not this is possible would be nice before this thread is locked and deleted.
---------- Post added at 03:48 AM ---------- Previous post was at 03:29 AM ----------
From what I read in this thread – http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2017525 – if you were previously rooted and such, you can use your original unlock.bin from HTC. If your device had never had the bootloader unlocked, and you accepted the OTA, or got the device with 2.xxx firmware, you're screwed.
Good on you, Verizon. ಠ_ಠ

Lets keep it civil guys.
Thanks.
JTAG it, or pay someone else to do it. I don't see why people are so apprehensive. If you're willing to risk bricking by flashing stuff its not a far step to send it out and get it unlocked.
If I ever need a replacement I'm surely going to send mine out. Or I might pick up a riff box myself and start doing it.

Rooting for Dummy (Me)

I got my GS4 today. I love it but there is a TON of things pre installed that I don't want. I've never "rooted" a phone before. I've read over some ways and it looks confusing as HECK. So a few questions. 1: Is there a way to "root" and just take away all the apps that are unwanted, and leave the same basic OS and apps I still want? 2: Should I wait a few weeks until everything has been tested and such before attempting? 3: Should I try to "root" a phone I already have that is inactive? 4: If so, I have a Droid 3, and a Casio Commando that would make good test subjects.
Now remember, I'm a noob. But I love the idea of being in control of my own device. Thanks for the help in advance.

check that link for a root guide.
very simple and straight forward. all links provided for what you need to download and even links for dummys and noobs.
look around, ask around. but always search before you ask otherwise you might get flamed and chewed out.
PM me if you need any further assistance to rooting the S4. I just rooted mine with that guide, took less than 5 minutes. there are way more complicated ways to root, so this guide already dumbs it down A LOT.

It's all in the guide. All the info, step by step, is there. Just follow it. It tells you have to verify root.
After your first flash, you run SuperUser?
Once you do, you can download a root checker on Google Play or use adb shell (you prolly won't use adb shell cmd though).
Once you verified you are rooted, you flash the 2nd file.
But since you seem to have already completed the full process, just go to google play and download a root checker. Run it to verify you have root. Simple.

Does this update bring back lock screen widgets? I'm currently writing my own lock screen and using xposed to create it. But i seriously hope this update has the lock screen widgets again. :'(

Do you have any evidence of this? I've turned in 2 devices with warranty flags thrown with zero issues heck I didn't even unroot.

One other tip I would like to add, take it to a Tmo store. If they accept it, I am willing to bet I can make a case that my phone wasn't rooted or tampered with when I turned it in. Kinda like chain of custody with police evidence..... It could have been tampered with by some dude at the Tmo store.... just saying

Only the word of the people that it's happened to. I don't think they'd have a reason to lie. But I'm just gonna keep mine as is. Choice is a beautifully thing.

I'm so dumb for wanting to preserve the warranty on my phone until there's a reason I want to trip knox. How dare I have a personal preference with my personal device!

All they need is a 2nd employee to verify that is was tampered with when you turn it in. You might not like the rules but Tmobile and Samsung makes them. It kind of sucks that this is the way it is but it is what it is. You seem like you know all the answers.
