I cracked my old phone and got a replacement from Asurion, and they sent me a refurb with a bum trackball, which scrolls around the screen and doesnt even go down (sucks, i cant root it now without a modded recovery).
The guy at the Verizon store said i had to call Asurion since they issued the phone...
I just got off the phone with Asurion and theyre sending me a new one tomorrow or something, and they refused to give me an upgrade.
If my next one has a problem, what should i do? I refuse to deal with this.
Leave I guess. I got a like new incredible on eBay for a great price and I'm using that to ride out the rest of my contract. Then I'm leaving for Spring or T-Mo.

This is why I don't use Asurion. I just have BestBuy insurance, which covers absolutely everything that could possibly happen to my phone (my sister has dropped her phone in a stream and thrown it against the wall and their policy covered it, and she got a new phone the first time, and the second time her phone was discontinued so they gave her an upgrade). I'm careful with my phone though, and honestly I thought I'd break it much quicker (I'm very clumsy). I've had my Eris for about 8 months now and nothing has happened to it at all (hardware wise, anyways. I did almost brick it once, but I fixed it rather quickly).
You could ask to speak to the supervisor of the Asurion rep. Chances are that if you express deeply enough of your unhappiness with their poor service, they will probably help you out. Since you have probably paid enough in insurance to buy a newer phone.
Since you got the phone from Asurion, Verizon won't do anything for you now. I haven't had much experience with Asurion, but I believe they would be less inclined to give you a new phone since it's pretty much the only insurance you can get for phones ( I don't know if the Best Buy insurance is available to only phones bought there or not).
You can try talking to a supervisor and might get some luck. It's worth a shot. If not, I don't think there is much else you can do aside from buying a new phone yourself.
Well they sent me another replacement for free this time, and with a working trackball.. i kinda wish they didnt so i could complain again lol. Dont ever work with Asurion, I swear the first refurb they gave me was a chinese copy, it didnt even say HTC on the phone

I got an Asurion phone and when it broke (the question is when, not if with those) I just called VZW's CS and got them to send me a replacement, never dealt with Asurion after that, and I vow to never do so again.
I broke my first eris, got a replacement from asurion and the soft key lights didn't work so I called back the next morning after getting it and the guy had me do some reset tests and such and that didn't work so he had a brand new eris sent out to me. I got to keep all the extra stuff that came with the replacement, all I had to do was ship back the phone body itself. Guess I made out good since I only paid 50 bucks for the replacement and got a brand new eris out of it along with two new back covers, two batteries, two chargers and an extra 8gig sd card. lol
Asurion is a miserable excuse for an insurance company. It's borderline fraud what they do. I had to replace an old flip phone a few years back and they gave me one whose screen wouldn't shut off when flipped closed, and it would hardly flip closed anyways because there was no spring-action to the flip. It was just one continuous resistance-filled motion.
This is exactly why we dropped insurance on our phones.
I'm considering dropping the insurance. I don't think it's worth the monthly fee, plus the deductible if I have to use it. I've only used it once so far, back on my old flip phone a couple years ago.

So my phone has been overheating and I called in last week to get another one, they said they will send out one as soon as possible. I was looking at the status email that they sent me and in it there is this blurb:
Get started with your
Certified Like-New
Replacement device.
How are there refurbs for this phone already? I usually don't have a problem with refurbs but since i bought a new phone I am expecting a new phone as replacement . Should I keep the refurb or pester them for a new one?

Because of all those fanboys returning their Rezound to get the Gnex. Also, there were some phones that did have issues (overheating, "pink buttons", data drops, stuck pixels, etc.).
If I were you, I would accept the refurb device and check EVERY single thing on the phone out to find any issues whatsoever. If you do find something, simply call back and explain how upset you are that you have received two defective devices. Maybe then they CSR can get a brand new one sent out to you.
sadly... refurb means someone else has already had their penis on the phone.

The reason I am so crazy paranoid about checking my phone for heat is that I do not want to enter the refurb pool. Did it three times on my Incredible. The refurb pool right now is full of overheating and dead pixel phones.
But the bigger question is WHY you are in the refurb pool. Isn't the deal that phones bought now get an extended period through January 15th?

that is why I'm not too worried. if it don't work better, I will just call VZW and get a brand new one. but sometimes, refurb products work better than new. just gonna test this out for now.

Wow. The phone has only been out a month and they're already talking refurbs? Sucks majorly.
My Incredible lasted 18 months but my daughter went through 3 in the last year.
Dumped down the interwebs from my HTC Rezound
the "Jan 15" extended warrenty only applies to phones purchased from Nov 15+ and only from Verizon stores. If you bought one from Best Buy, Radio Shack, etc... then you just have their warrenty, not the Jan 15 one.(already confirmed with a VZW CSR)
I just got a refurb phone and it's noticeably better. Actually have red LEDs now and the audio, while still somewhat hissy, not near as bad.

I bet when January/February come around there will be enough warrantied phones that htc will make the attempt to fix at least most of the broad spectrum issues in them.

There is no way I would accept a refurb at this point. Where did you buy your phone? You should still be in the 30 day exchange window for places like Best Buy.
Do not settle for a refurb! If you do, the chances of you exchanging in the future for a new one are 1 in a million.
Sent via my HTC Rezound using XDA premium app.
I had 3 rezounds in a row with stuck/dead pixels. For my 4th one I contacted warranty again since they offered to charge a new one to my account since I was out of my 14 day period. So the rep was like oh yeah I see those notes but what I can do for you now is ship you out a Thunderbolt. I'm like really? How is that phone an acceprtable replacement for the Rezound? You guys are giving me a dated device in place of a device that just came out? I was like yeah I'm not going to accept an outdated device to have my DOA phone replaced. Then I asked her so basically what you're telling me is I'm SOL and you guys are like hey! Here's an old phone for the brand new one you just go? She's like uh well I don't want to say it like that... I was like then don't say it, just get me a new rezound shipped out. Ten minutes later brand new Rezound shipped out with no issues besides the occasional audio jack bs. Refurbs aren't too bad the quality has gone up. At this point since the device is so new you'll probably be getting someone's return.
I came to this phone from the charge via refurb and the first one I got had a scratch and the audio problem. However, second one looks like it has never been touched. The screen is perfect and the audio jack is significantly better. The hiss is still there but hardly noticeable at all.
So I dropped my thunderbolt the other night and cracked the screen in three places. It still functions, its just very annoying to look at. If I were to do an insurance claim anyone know the chances of getting another 32 GB MicroSD card with it? I could use one for my Xoom
About as good as your chances of finding one in the street.
Any insurance or warranty I've dealt with ship you the unit.
You supply battery, charger and the memory card.
Unless you can somehow convince them the memory card is bad as well...but good luck.

This.
I work for Sprint and whenever we order new phones (either insurance claim for customers or our in-store replacement) they send only the device itself and the only other thing that they will send is the battery and charger ONLY if it's an entirely different phone as well as charger. Now of course I don't work at Verizon, but all the insurance claims are the exact same so I can almost guarantee they won't send it. Doesn't hurt to try, though.
so what would be the best bet? Returning it to stock and unrooting it to send it back in or just reporting it lost/stolen?

Most people just report it lost/stolen to keep the old phone (even though the esn is not longer able to activate), but what exactly are you trying to do? Get an extra 32GB SD card or just keep your same SD card? If it's the former then revert back to my first post. If it's the latter then if you are doing an insurance claim then you keep your same SD card and battery and just send the device back - also Asurion isn't going to care if it is rooted or not so there is no need to revert it back to stock. Hope that helped.
I had mine replaced a while back for the same exact reason. Finally bit the bullet on the annoyance factor...I was hoping for an extra sd card but no luck. Would have been a sweet deal though I must say. BTW asurion could probably care less, I've sent them a handful phones that were still rooted and rommed over the last couple years.
I have done two insurance claims with Asurion in the past. Both were with the D1. Both times i had to send in just the phone (no sdard and no battery) and both times they shipped me a new phone, battery, sd card and charger. It was a new box with all the normal accessories included. So, i dunno why everyone is saying no. Is it a different policy with the Thunderbolt?

That may be back in the day (if you're talking about the droid 1) but I have not seen that happen for a while, and with as common of a phone as the Thunderbolt I can almost bet they won't do that (popularity=more refurds available). And are you sure that it wasn't a warranty replacement as opposed to an insurance claim? Either that or you got extremely lucky two times because insurance usually doesn't cover the SD and battery (which are considered accessories). Because the phones never come in a new sealed box - they usually come in a generic box without accessories.

Yeah, It was an insurance claim and it was a droid 1. I dropped them in water both times and they didn't work any longer. Cost me the deductable and arrived in the mail within two days both times. Sad this has changed. $8 a month and deductible gets you a referb with no accessories now? I may cancel mine after reading this. What a rip off.

Yeah because it's way better to pay $400-$500 for a new phone outright when you don't have insurance. I agree insurance is a little expensive but it is a way better option than buying a new phone outright. Most people don't have that option. It's insurance, what insurance company have you ever had that didn't charge a deductible?

Yes and no...insurance is good because it gives you an option other than the old "you're **** out of luck" that most of use face that don't have insurance and then ***** and complain about them not doing anything about it and/or not having insurance added and likewise to what przfghtr said what insurance company has there ever been that hasn't charged a deductible? The price sucks but it is definitely a lot better than paying $500+ for the phone outright.
A 2-second google search returned some refurbished thunderbolts for around $300. And since that's what you apparently get with the insurance, that's really what price you should qoute, not new price. Anyway, I'm not telling you to dump your insurance, but i am. With my current deductable they are only covering $150 for $8 a month. Waste of money IMO.

I'm currently on the "tier1" plan from Asurian(sp?). My replacement fee is still $99, the same price it was for me back when I had my Droid 1.
I have to send my old TB back tomorrow, I was able to get the latest OTA On it, but.. since the USB Is busted(I sent it in originally bad Microphone), I cant re-lock the boot loader. I really hope they just look at it power up, and go OK, and throw it back at HTC. And not load up the boot loader NOt sure if they would hit me with $99 for the phone or $500 for a replacement

I'm interested in where you found these refurbished models because the lowest price that I found when searching was $385 retail. Also is it $150 for an insurance deductible with Verizon? All I know is that there are (usually) two different tiers: One being feature phones which are $50 for a deductible and $100 for smartphones and to my knowledge that was the same across the board (I also worked at At&t before and it was the same deductible pricing). So if that's the case you would be paying a total of $192 for the entirety of your contract for insurance and then a $100 deductible (this is assuming you keep the insurance on for the duration of your contract) still would come out cheaper than purchasing a refurbished phone outright and being overnighted free (as Asurion does).
Insurance isn't for everyone; some people see the amount of value that it has, others don't - it's subjective like anything else. Also insurance is universal: you're betting it'll break, they're betting it won't.

My brother works for Asurion and their policy has always been to replace with a refurbished phone whenever possible. With that said, you most likely received new phones because they did not have any refurbished D1s to replace it with since it was one of the first android phones Verizon carried there were no other options to replace it with (although at one point they were replacing the D1 with the Eris). If you read your insurance paperwork it says they replace with a refurbished model OR another model that is similar. At times they have replaced high end android models with low end android models. This is why I use another 3rd party insurance other than Asurion.

It does not matter if you are rooted or not with Asurion. Asurion is a 3rd party vendor. They are not Verizon and are not checking to see if you are rooted. They receive the phone and have the issue fixed clean the phone up and it becomes a refurbished unit that they send out to someone else later.

thank you for the confirmation. Also can I get your bros number just in case my phone breaks?
Hi All,
I just wanted to give everyone a heads up about making claims to Assurion.
TL-DR
Make sure to verify the hardware is fully in tact when getting an Assurion claim. Report even the slightest defect.
I dropped my phone about 3 weeks ago. Bummer. I got my "Like New" Assurion replacement. I immediately noticed the battery door didn't seem to fit well on the replacement, and would come unclipped very easily; sometimes when pulling out of my pouch. I shrugged it off as a problem with the door itself from opening and re-closing during the S-Off process, and just planned to buy a new door.
After flashing ROMs, S-Offing, etc, I noticed the door fit perfectly on the original as I was migrating all the data from the device (door was on because WiFi wouldn't connect otherwise). Hmmmmm.
I closely looked at the two devices, and noticed a very very small bulge coming from underneath the red cover that holds the battery. The bulge is so small, it almost seems too small to cause any problems, but it is.
I called Assurion, and they told me that if I had called in sooner, they'd send a replacement, but because I was outside of my 7 day window, they would not send a replacement.
I spoke to a supervisor (before I had my morning coffee; bad idea) and laid into him. He snapped back a bit that I should have let him finish, and he'd override the policy and send me a new replacement without forcing me to make a new claim.
In closing, if you're going to make an Assurion claim, physically inspect the device very carefully and report the smallest of problems you may find, even if you can't find the cause or think you may be imagining it.
Something interesting I noticed is that the new device did not have the VOID sticker on the screw, because I was thinking about swapping the back from the old phone to the new one. They may not have noticed, but I didn't want to chance it. The good news is now, if I have to replace a screen or something, the missing VOID sticker means I can replace the parts and they won't know I was tinkering inside .
Hope this helps someone avoid future frustration.
When I was having my OG Droid replaced, they kept sending me refurb ones that had literally TON of dust under the glass (I literally could not use it outside because of how much dust it was, you couldn't see the screen). I went through like 6 of them before they just sent me a new D2G.
I highly recommend being anal as HELL when you get a refurb from them.
I also report mine as lost not broken or any of that. Had a case were my mom sent one back and they said they "never got it". Believe me when I say this my mom sent the broken phone back. If they want their phones back they should us a carrier that allows tracking. That said if you are going to send one back be sure to get proof of shipping from the post office. That at least proves you shipped it then it can be between them and not you and them.
Edit:
And before someone jumps my ****, its not like I "loose" phones everyday. I have only had one claim on the EVO3D about a year ago or more.

I had the same issue with returning my brother's dumbphone. They said they had not received the phone and charged the account $519. Luckily I had held on to the proof of shipment. Two months later and after my account had been suspended twice for not paying the balance they corrected the error.

Cheers!
Asurion DROPPED me from my insurance saying I filed too many claims in a year, when in fact they were on different phones and 14 months apart. I called Verizon and Asurion, they realized they misappropriated a claim I made for my mom on her DInc2 that my baby brother decided needed a bath. They said I should have used all of her information on the claim, I told them no because it asked for the account holder info which is in fact ME.

Wait, WTF? They didn't send you a BNIB rezound? I busted my D2 back a year + ago and they sent out a BNIB. If I have to pay 100 bucks for a "deductible" they better send me a new one. not a refurb POS.
Well I am glad you all had GREAT experience with Assurion. I have had 1 bad experience and it ticked me off. Had a 32gb iPhone 4S. Notice the S there. Well long story short screen cracked, paid 200, got a new one sent to me. BNIB! Well I open it. Hmm something is not right here. Wait what is this? A iphone 4? Wheres my S. Wait theres more. There is a memory change? 16GB? Really? I called and the Support said that is the phone I had insured. NOOOOOOOOOOO SIR. Thats like using a strap on with the wife. Its just wrong! So I called Verizon thinking last resort ill argue with these guys. OMFG! Not only did they contact Assurion for me, but they gave me a 200 Credit on my account, and all I had to do was take the iPhone they sent me to a Verizon store and they replaced it with a 32GB iPhone 4S. Which needless to say I gave to my wife, for her sweet brand new REZOUND!! Never been happier!!
Get rid of Asurion
It is overpriced and refurbs suck! I use SquareTrade. If they cannot fix it, they give me full retail for it deposited right to my paypal.
And they are cheaper than Asurion
Weird they would send you a refurub.. My friends replacement from Asurion was brand new in box. Mine too.

I think it depends on stock. I've received both. I had a work phone stolen and they sent me a BNIB. Same for my WinMo device that was broken by the case VZW sold me.
It's odd how they replace things. When the power button broke on my OG Droid they told me to just send the unit itself and nothing else. I got a refurbished in return. When I bricked my Incredible they sent me a brand new unit with all the accessories and everything.

Damn now that's good service on Verizon's part. But if the 4 had 32gb of memory, how the hell can you tell the 4 and 4s apart? It's the same phone with a new letter behind it and marked up price tag?

Ok i never had a problem with asurion and I am still a noob but I got a custom rom! (4 bricks)finally learned enough to feel less noon. My point is this. All phones should be reported lost. You can keep the broke one and who knows, maybe you learn enough to fix it. I'm still kicking myself in the ass about the one I sent back for a black screen. I know exactly how to fix it now but I sent it back. Grrrrrr

Does any one know how long after buying can we still add Insurance?
I dropped mine yesterday and the screen is just black and there is a very miniscule crack at the bottom right corner. The screen doesn't turn on though so I am stuck. I bought mine on June 23rd and received it on June 25th.
I had it in an Incepio case but it obviusly didn't help, it was first time I ever dropped it. It wasn't even that bad of a drop just from table to floor.
I am wondering if I can add insurance and get it replaced after that.

its usually 30 days after purchase.
I wonder if they will check since mine is rooted lol.
Assuming you mean insurance (warranty is something you get for free and doesn't cover this sort of problem)... Whatever the duration is, I'm sure you're still within the window. But they probably will need to see the device first, since you would probably not be the first person to break their phone within that window. Verizon is a bunch of morons, but when it comes to money-making, they're not going to people do that.
I think your best bet would probably be to try to get third-party insurance, like what is offered by SquareTrade... http://www.squaretrade.com/android-landing1.
Keep in mind, whichever insurance you have, you'll still have to pay a deductible to get a new phone (or get your phone fixed). For squaretrade, it's $99.
EDIT: Ensquared seems to have a cheaper option. Both the up-front cost of the plan as well as the deductible are less expensive: http://www.ensquared.com/catalog/phone-insurance/1-year-phone-insurance-smartphone

Lol... I need to get used to this many-carriers-for-the-same-phone scenario. I'm used to just assuming everyone is on Verizon in my HTC Incredible forums
The point still stands though... I doubt any of the carriers would be dumb enough to give someone an insurance plan without seeing the phone first. But, since I've never gotten insurance on my own carrier, let alone yours, I can't say for sure.

you are not going to believe this, i thought i would try and get insurance anyways, and after a 5 min conversation with the CS t-mobile dude and him telling me i was over the 14 days for insurance, he gave it to me. I called and reported lost after 2 days and after $130 later i am getting one today delivered at home. I even asked if it would be refurbished or not and lade at Assurion said most likely new since it is so new. Now i have to wait and see.

Good to hear you got it figured it out. My phone was actually stolen this weekend and I should be getting one tomorrow, I really hope its not refurbished.
That crying face kills me when the thread is about broken screens/phones. Horrible feeling :/
I always thought asurion phones were always brand new?
