I had been disappointed the camera app didn't apparently support tap to focus. Turns out it has something similar, just hidden behind an awkward user interface.
You can slide the focus box in the middle with your finger to whatever you want to focus on.
I thought I had explored the app pretty thoroughly, but didn't find that one until I read the review of the Photon on Phonescoop.
If i am not mistaken (and usually i am) lol, I thought I was able to do that as well on my EVO 4G running MikG. I don't have my EVO with me at the moment here at work, but I'll see once i get home. Either way, good to know.

OK so whatever you move the box to center on is the point of auto focus for the photo....very cool !
now, how do we turn off the extremely annoying shutter sound?
Even with manually adjusting the focus, have you noticed that this camera is particularly bad at taking close-up photos? My Nexus One never had a blurry or out-of-focus photo, but for some reason the camera on my new Photon takes crap pictures. I've even tried the macro mode and it still looks terrible. This is at about 4 inches away from the object being photographed. I tried in various different light settings too.

Just got my RAZR on Friday. Love the phone so far. Just wondering if anyone else experiences a lot of choppiness when pinching-to-zoom and panning around on images. This is not just limited to photos, or to high-resolution images. I tried loading some really small images onto my phone and even those are really choppy to manipulate.
I can't imagine this is a hardware issue, considering that this is a high-end phone. My old Droid Pro had a worse processor and had no trouble zooming/panning images smoothly.
Also, I'm not sure whether this is related, but when I am zoomed into an image, sometimes it will pan at what seems like twice the speed I am moving my finger across the screen. So if I swipe from right to left, it will end up panning two "screens-worth" to the left, if that makes sense.
Any thoughts?
Yeah, it's Moto's crappy gallery app. I recommend quickpic, but there are others.
Thanks for the response. I figured it was some software issue, but it's strange that it would just be due to Motorola's Gallery app, since the Gallery App on my Droid Pro (which also had Blur and everything) performed very well. It's crazy that they'd release a phone with something so unnerving.
Anyway, this Quickpic app is fantastic. Very simple and quick. Thanks for the recommendation. I'll use this going forward.
I too experience choppy zooming. Hope it gets fixed when ICS comes out though.
Ok guys, my friend's Note 10.1 got in a bootloop and he asked me to fix it for him, as it will be with me for a few days and I've already fixed it I decided to do a comparison, feel free to ask for my opinion on things I don't mention.
First off I guess I'll start with the ports
On the left side there's nothing on the Note while on our Nexus we have the Micro USB port and the 3.5mm headphone jack, on the right side we have the micro HDMI out, the note doesn't have anything on this side either.
At the bottom we find the pogo charger on the N10 and the charger/USB/MHL port in the Note, the S Pen is located in the right bottom corner, there's a Mic located at the bottom in both of them.
At the top we find the volume rocker and the power/lock key while on the Note we find those along with an IR blaster and a Holy Micro SD card slot (god damn it google)
It's also worth noting that the Note doesn't have NFC.
This is subjective but the tacky back and sides of the Nexus make it far easier to hold and it feels solider., the glossy back on the Note doesn't feel nearly as bad as I thought it would.
The speakers
I didn't think I would write anything about these but after some use I noticed the speakers on the Note sound better, this must be thanks to Samsung's tuning, as I'm almost completely sure these devices share the same hardwarein this area, perhaps we can copy it?
Oh and by the way the Note has different sound profiles on the video player and Music app, all of them sound better but this isn't limited to these apps, the difference is found across all apps, launch Youtube or third party music players and you'll notice it.
I'll talk about the performance without bringing the benchmarks here as you can find those everywhere else, for this test I´ll be comparing my sister's N10 (which isn't rooted and is completely stock) with the stock Note.
The Note is running 4.1.2 while my sister's N10 is running 4.2.2, I'll start by clearing all recents and closing everything with the task manager on the Note
Scrolling across the homescreens and the app drawer is really smooth on both however there are micro lags on the Note - Disregard that, I had one update left and wehn I did it it got rid of the micro lags while this doesn't happen on the Nexus, I suspect this is the launcher's fault tough.
Launching apps happens at pretty much the exact same time most o the time, the Nexus is faster by fraction of a second some times.
The note does have more free RAM all of the time as it's GPU doesn't need as much of it as the on the N10, It can use as much as 1.78gbs of it while we can only use 1.2gbs
For the browser comparison I'll be using chrome beta on both, all browsing data has been cleared. I can compare the AOSP browser performance but I'd have to use my N10.
I'll just say that the sites load faster the Nexus, after that the browser experience is pretty much the same until you pinch to zoom which brings us to the screen section.
Edit: The S Pen is really useful when browsing as it can act as a mouse when you hover on website dropdown menus and the like.
The screens
This is probably where the biggest differences can be seen (as long as we don't talk about touchwiz), coming from the Nexus 10 you'll inmediately see the jagginess and lack of detail every f*cking where in the Note, from HD videos to text to images, sadly, this is the only thing the Nexus has going for it in the screen department.
The Note has a MUCH, MUCH better color reproduction, the next time I get my hands on my dad's iPad 3 I'll update this to tell you about a comparison between those 2 screens, I think the iPad looks better though.
Not only that but Samsung has also provided it with color modes which are a good thing to have, black levels between the N10 and the Note are comparable they are maybe a little darker in the note HOWEVER I've noticed the Nexus has a better black level (I believe that's how it's called, for reference go here www.lagom.nl/lcd-test/black.php) The note has trouble with the darker tones.
The screen on the note is far far more responsive than the one in the Nexus I beleieve this is a software issues icause on purpose in the Nexus, do the following:
Open the your favorite broswer and make your thumb and index finger touch each other as when you prepare to pinch to zoom, now, with both fingers together start the pinch gesture, you'll notice how the Nexus will NOT begin to pinch to zoom until your fingers are about 1/3" apart from each other, This isn't a hardware issue as if you enable the show touches option in developer setting yo ucan see the device is registering both of them.
Now download and install the Quickpic gallery app from the Play store and pinch to zoom the same way in there, you'll see how that app behaves, the is the way the Note/HP Touchpad/iPad behave when you pinch to zoom in them.
Edit: I forgot to mention that the Note doesn't have any kind of backlight bleed.
The camera
Well, while the Samsung camera app offers many more options than the stock 4.2 camera.for some reason it takes longer to focus and the pictures are NEVER even close to the quality the N10 offers, the pictures are just terrible, I think this is the same sensor as the one in the N10 but for some reason the pictures are full of noise and lack detail.
The front facing camera is just as good as the one in the N10, Hell, I think it's better than the rear facing one, and like in the Nexus, it's one of the best front facing cameras I've seen. (It's miles ahead of the iPad)
Well, that's all I can think of at the moment, feel free to ask about other differences.
Have you done any gaming on the note 10.1? I am especially interested in hearing about heavy games like MC4 or so as sometimes my N10 lags during gameplay for MC4. It is however pretty smooth on other games like Nova 3 and asphalt 7 with gorgeous graphics.

Sometimes the nexus 10 has some laggs while using the chrome browser.

The battery on the Nexus is a bit better (my sister has a lot of battery sucking apps though, and I'm UV'ed in my Nexus so I won't use it to compare it with the Note) I have yet to try any heavy games, I'll run NFSMW later today after I flash the Note as it went back to the damn bug even after the ODIN restore.

No lags, delays, anything - pinch to zoom is ultrasmooth and pages load fast.
I get the feeling that people experiencing lags or sluggish behavior are running a ton of un-optimized widgets, because I never had any problems and my benchmark results are stupidly high compared to anything else.

I know but you can't load the AOSP browser on the Nexus unless you root it, I could use mine for comparison though.
I actually had the note 10.1 before i got the nexus 10. It was the white version and boy was she pretty. Just a little too much plastic for my taste. The screen was gorgeous! With all honesty I enjoy it a little better then the nexus 10 screen. I guess I'm a rich color type of guy. The downside of the things was the fact I felt the screen was built for the s pen using only. Every time I tried to swipe across a application it would open that app up if I wasn't using the s-pen. It got to the point where it was unbearable to use. So I got the nexus 10 And been loving this beast every since. I love the feel of the tablet, the front speakers are nice and the most important reason why I fell in love with this thing. Stock android and The SPEED!!!! The speed is the fastest i seen on any android devices and i had them all. Also the camera is one of the best you can find on a tablet.

You say the screen was better on the Note?? I just returned the note because I couldn't stand reading text on it, it was just too fuzzy for my tired old eyes. I was assuming the Nexus would be better being that it has a higher resolution. I guess I'll have to make a Staples run and see if they have the Nexus' in stock and see for myself.

He meant color wise, the screen on the Nexus I'd the shapest one you'll find on any tablet, reading on it is great but whoever calibrated it crippled it on purpose.
The N10 is sharp and you will have no problems as far as reading text on it.
Note port?
So I love my Nexus 10, but I was wondering if anyone has tought of porting the Note 10.1 ROM to the Nexus? I just need a little more productivity from this tablet. Plus the stock browser is faster than the chrome.
my nexus 10 also has the hdmi slot.. why the note 10,1 uses a samsung dongle.. like a apple type variant.. only samsung approved
My wife needed a new phone and I saw the G2 on sale for 49.99 so I made the jump.
Gave my wife the S4 while I got the G2. So far I have mixed feelings about the G2.
1. Software/Hardware home button.
-When I type with the G2, I have a habit of accidentally hitting the home button when I try to hit the space bar. I know I'll get used to this but everytime it happens I always miss the hardware home button.
-I also miss it when i play games on the G2.
+Watching video is nicer on the G2 because the home buttons dissappear
2. Camera
-The camera on the S4 is a bit better IMO even though the G2 has OIS. I use my phone to take pictures of my son quite often and during low light. I notice the S4 excels quite a bit more in this aspect. You get blurred shots on both but get more good shots with the S4. It seems the senstivity of the camera sensor in the G2 is lower so it keeps the shutter open longer to grab more light. Has anyone used the AOSP camera? I'll gladly take darker photos than blurry ones.
3. Screen
+The IPS screen is definitely better than the AMOLED S4 screen when viewing head on. Brighter and cripser since it's not pentile. The only negative I can say about this is the viewing angles.. I work in a cubicle for 8hrs a day and am missing the old viewing angles of the S4 screen when the phone is on the desk. Not a big issue but I notice it.
4. Battery Life
-So far it seems like my G2 drains faster than my S4. I did just realize that I have alot of notifications options turned on in FB,YouTUBE, and other programs that I haven't turned off. I'll try that and see if it helps.
Overall, I like the G2 better but miss some of those aspects of the S4.
Numbers 1, 2, and 3 are just value judgement and it's hard to argue against things that are inherently based on personal tastes and/or sensitivities. However, with #4 you're just doing it wrong with your particular apps and settings and need to do some troubleshooting with wakelocks from rogue apps, or have horrific signal where you spend most of your time.

For number 4, root your phone and freeze/uninstall all the bloatware with titanium pro or install CWM Loki'd with CleanRom. I get 6.5 hours of screen time on CleanRom all the time with about 24-30 hours off charger time.

1. is purely subjective.
2. is a bit more objective. The shutter is noticebly slower than the S4
3. the viewing angles are alot better in AMOLED screens.. the usefulness of that is situational
I did want to also mention that the overall software on the G2 is less buggy than the S4.
+the bluetooth works better on G2. The S4 connected fine to my car('13 rav4) but the artist name/track name never showed up. I was not able to fastforward or rewind without doing so on the phone itself. With the G2 however everything works great.
+the IR remote IMO works alot better on the G2 as well. The S4's version allowed for volume/channel changes and power button. The G2's allow for that and more. Input, menus, and guides worked for me on the G2 software.
+sense drawer works better than the touchwiz. smoother and more customization.. although I usually end up using Nova Launcher afterawhile.
1. It takes some time to get used to.
2. In some cases, yes, it is.
3. Not that big of a deal.
4. Mine lasts two days whereas the S4 would last a day and a half tops (with crude powersaving measures).

the first photo I took after unboxing the phone was missed. horribly. the camera seems so slow. If compared to a note 5, iphone etc.
Using auto for settings. i figured itd be at least almost as fast as comparable flagship devices.
Can anyone provide a decent list of settings for those "gotta take it fast" settings?
I have no problem at all. Just open and the camera app and shoot.
Haven't had any problems here. I used it all weekend to take picture of fall leaves.
Only thing that was "slow" was opening it by way of the double press of the down volume button. Not as fast as I'd like between the press and the actual picture.
But just opening the camera from the icon (i have it on my second screen) was very fast! The actual picture taking is blazing fast too. It was especially appreciated when taking panoramic pictures. My note 2 is pretty slow for those.

I have the camera on the second screen when the screen is off.
Screen off defaults to the date/time/battery display but swipe to the left and it's (sound) (wifi) (flashlight) (camera)
I don't remember setting it that way. I thought I was just by default...

I have problems with the camera on the LG V10 too. For stationary stuff it's fine, but my Note 4 was much faster to take a camera shot on auto, and the picture always looked much better, with much less noise and blur... I have a 3 year old. So he moves fast, and I don't want to carry my expensive camera with me everywhere. I really thought this would be at least as good as the Note 4 on auto but it isn't. I really love the LG v10 overall, and don't like the thought of losing the removable battery, SD memory expansion, the DAC, and other great stuff, by moving to a Note 5. But I'm just that disappointed in the camera. Anyone think I might have a defective phone? I mean I hit the camera button to take a picture, and it just lags. And the result is blurry more often than not.

I've had none of these problems that you speak of...You might try to exchange your device....sucks bro.
Make sure OIS is on.
Make sure it's saving picture to phone
This camera is not as fast as note 5 when it comes to shooting quickly. Auto focus is nice but remember note 5 had camera api running in the background constantly so it's easy to open camera and snap.
It seems to have a slight lag with focusing in auto mode, especially compared to note 5.
I use it mainly for manual shots, but I also have note 5 too.
V10 has many more camera and video options than note 5, but is slightly slower
I have no problems with the camera at all.. Its fast and amazing. I came from a note 4 that became very slow after a half a year. N4 took 20 sec just for the camera to get in focus after opening the app. V10 Manual mode is the shiiz

I agree with you on this. I was debating on the note 5 and this. i love the big screen and removable battery and sd card and the storage is awesome but the camera pictures really disappointment. very much noise and blurry on the ends. like it just focus on the middle. Im thinking of returning it but i don't want to loose the whole other features..

I agree have the same problem. I wa sdebating on the note 5 and this but I love the whole big phone, storage and memory so I went with this. but since I am in the 14 day trial period I want to return it and get the note 5. just yesterday i took pictures and it took for over to take so when people saw the first flash they assumed it took and moved and yeah not good. IS there a setting or something?
