IIf you have any rom's on your sd like com rom, it contains root but you must have a non stock recovery to flash it with out a pc.
So if you have an aftermarket recovery you can just download a rom that contains root...most of them now a days do, just boot into recovery wipe everything and flash.
At that point you'll have root and you'll be operational until you can get to a pc to get you the rest of the way. If you don't have any rom on your sd just download it right from your phone..I recommend com rom 2.0 and then if your want the 2.1 patch...ths will get you root, the rom, otb kernel, and a very functional phone.

I have com rom already. having trouble with a recovery that won't stick. I need Odin to get the recovery to work right?

What recovery are you using right now? I believe there are CWM 3 zip files you can download through ur phone & flash.

Recovery is over written by the stock kernel, odin is needed to flash stock vzw files, and recovery for the first time....you say you have com rom already...well just odin recovery (3/30 fix all, otb 3.x x, or times infinity 3 x.x x) any should work. Run odin and after its done immediately 3 finger boot into recovery then wipe data, cache, and dalvik, and flash com rom (it contains a kernel so recovery will be stuck and unless you need to go back to stock or screw something up you shouldn't need odin for a while)...reboot and you have a permanent recovery

I've tried flashing recovery via Odin and CWM Recovery and it will reboot into recovery just fine. However, when I let it reboot into android, turn it off, and then go back into recovery, CWM is gone. The phone, however, stays rooted.
Any idea what could be wrong or how to fix this?
Secondly, if I can get into CWM immediately after flashing, is it safe to flash a new ROM at that point or do I need to get CWM to stick first?
Anyone? Any suggestions at all will be appreciated

Sure... You can flash a rom immediately following the flash of cwm.... Did you also install busy box?
Which cwm are you trying to use? 5.8.4.7 seems to do me good....?

Before your phone boots after installing cwm in Odin do a battery pull then boot into recovery (Volume Up+Home+power) then flash your superuser/root package. It will stick then.

I tried using that CWM version as well as an older one. Both work and I can get busy box and superuser installed once it boots up. But when I power down and try to go back into recovery, CWM is gone. I do get to keep root though.

I tried unchecking the auto-reboot button on Odin 4 and 7, and going that route. Both allow me to get into CWM, where I try to flash the recovery v5.zip. Still doesn't stick unfortunately.
My flash counter is up to about 10 now, trying to get CWM to stick..

Thanks everyone. I used CWM toolkit, reflashed the stock recovery, then used odin 3.07 to re-flash CWM 5.5.0.4 and it stuck.
So I'm rooting my best friend's Vibrant, which is on Froyo. I did all the workarounds needed to root while on Froyo and I managed to root the phone and get recovery running (the reinstall packages one). But, I've been trying to install CM11 from recovery and it doesn't let me. First, whenever I picked the zip to install it, it would throw me with the Status 0 error, so either the zip was corrupt or the CWM was too old. So, I downloaded another CM11 and it still threw me the same error, which meant the problem was recovery. With the AIO toolbox, I managed to get a newer recovery running, but when I select the zip it says it couldn't mount /sdcard. And then /sdcard becomes unreadable in recovery until I reboot the phone. /Sdcard can be read fine when booted into the OS so I don't think it's the encryption bug. But, I can't install any ROM, and can't find any other CWM image that's more recent or maybe a TWRP image. What to do?

Update: I flashed the KK 4.4 kernel and now can't get into recovery, it goes into a bootloop booting into recovery.

Update 2: managed to enter recovery and flashed CM11. Fixed phone. Close thread if needed.

Flash stock firmware to exit bootloop. And, in the next time, check your choice and pick "Normal" option.

[URGENT HELP]
I was updating apps from playstore. So there was an update for superuser and i updated it as well. After the update superuser asked for some binary file update and had an option for installation through CWM/TWRP Recovery . Since i had it installed i selected that option and the phone botted to recovery and then nothing happened. I was expecting it to auto install. I try to reboot the phone but it boots to recovery everytime. What can i do to solve this? i dont want to flash a ROM because i need to backup contacts first
Next time, choose the "normal" option.
For your problem, reflash CWM through Odin or flash stock recovery.
