[Q] How to use ADB to install Odin to my phone? - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S 4

I downloaded a standalone version of ADB from this website (no SDK) and the Odin files (loki_flash and recovery.lok). I put the Odin files in my data/local/tmp folder using Root Explorer on my phone. Now I'm trying to use the ADB shell command to install them. However, when I try to run it, it says "error: device offline" even though it's plugged into the USB port. How do I get ADB to detect my phone?
Thank you.

Your have to authorize ADB from your phone, a message should pop up if it doesn't then first make sure you have the latest usb drivers, and that you have enabled usb debugging on the phone try and to use adb again and see if that works. If all else fails it never hurts to download the SDK, and make sure both java/jre and ADB are in your system path variable.

Help with ADB

Got a new computer and Im having trouble getting my ADb setup. When I try to run adb devices I get
adb is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file.
I have adb setup on C, JDK is installed. Downloaded drives from htc sync, but did not install htc sync. Under Device Manager, the phone is listed as
-Android USB Devices
-My HTC. the monitor has a lilttle yellow triangle with an !. I tried to update the drives, but it says I have the most recent installed.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
Edit.....need to use the platform-tools folder, not tools.
+1
I have tried to run ADB on my Inc, Nook Color and now the TBolt.
I just cant get it to work.
It would be easy to just say I am a dope, but I have had a highly successful run with the Inc. I have flashed/installed/performed/restored every worthwhile mod available for the INC and Nook with no trouble. I just cant get ADB to run.
ive just helped someone with this.
they HTC Sync software has the ADB drivers
download
install
then cancel HTC sync instalation

It sounds to me like your problem is that the adb executable is not in your path and you're not trying to run it from within the directory it is installed in, as indicated by your saying "adb is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file".
In your terminal window, try using the cd command to switch to whatever folder the adb.exe file is in, and then try running the command. You don't even need the phone hooked up to test at first...just type adb devices or something to see if the app runs or not. On my Mac, if I just type adb at the command line, adb responds with a list of all available commands.
Do a dir command (Win) or ls (Mac/Linux) to confirm the file is in the same directory you are.

Yea, the error is the one you get when you use a windows command thats not in the path. So do this, or add it to your path environment variable
Thanks to all who answered. That is why this community is the best. The older version of adb just had tools folder, while the new version has platform tools that needs to be used. Again thanks.
sent from my commando style T-Bolt.
I'm on win 7 32 bit.
I have HTC sync installed, adb installed, added system variables and cannot get adb to recongize my device in command prompt.

CM6.01 reboots - how to do logcat?

My phone has been rebooting many times recently. I have read about people mentioning a logcat when connected via USB. I am keen to help shed light on reboots so want to know what I need to do after a reboot.
Do I simply hook up the phone to my PC via USB and run a command to dump some sort of error log file?

Yes. You shall use ADB for viewing log from PC.
I use the ADB included with SuperOneClick 2.1.1
Download it from here: ftp://shortfuse.org/SuperOneClick/Packages/SuperOneClickv2.1.1-ShortFuse.zip
Inside the zip there is an ADB folder. First, if on windows, try just invoking adb.exe from a command prompt (cmd), it will spit out the parameters.
For log viewing, connect USB to phone and start "adb.exe logcat".
If you want to redirect the output to a file, you can use "adb logcat > output.log", for example.

[Q] OSX, adb usb, adb devices = error: device not found

when I type adb devices cmd in the terminal it does not list my device and its plugged in....
when I try to type adb usb it says no devices found...
for the record nothing is wrong with my USB connection cable because, I'm able to connect my HTC ReZound via USB cable to my macbook, the CDROM and STORAGE auto mounts to my desktop so i know the connection is working, because I'm able to copy files, update music via winamp sync playlists, also my paid EasyTeather copy works, etc.
I updated & installed most recent Android SDK adt-bundle-mac-x86_64-20130917 and updated the device manager for my ver 4.0.3 and all tools, even tryed using a stand alone platform-osx-tools.zip that contains a adb and fastboot...\
I read up on this and found nothing tryed everything....
adb kill-server > adb start-server - does nothing
adding device in the adb_usb.ini didn't help either.
chmod a+r /etc/udev/rules.d/51-android.rules after creating file didn't help.
rebooted many times .
i've attached a terminal cmd window below to show.
USB debugging is enabled on the device, yes? Does the "USB debugging enabled" notification show up when you plug it into the computer?

are you doing proper methods in command prompt for sdk's adb such as directing it to the folder its in...example did you type cd c:/androidsdk/platform_tools/ in command prompt for example
I used to have a mac ....but here
Download htc sync for mac
http://www.iskysoft.com/convert-mobile/sync-htc-to-mac.html
Download the sdk and all you need is a folder called platform tools
http://developer.android.com/sdk/index.html
Extract the platform tools folder Put it on your desktop
Open terminal type "cd" then hit space then drag and drop the platform tools folder into the terminal after that hit enter
Then you can run any command just make sure to put "./ " before the command without quotations so if you wanna flash a boot you would put
./fastboot flash boot boot.img and hit enter
Note that adb works perfectly well on my Mac without the HTC Sync drivers.

Help extracting data from Android Device

Hi, I hope I am posting in the right section? I found the site really difficult to navigate having never used the site before. If its in the wrong place please can a mod move it.
Ok so I have an Android Set Top Box (STB) and I am trying to extract all the data from it. It is an mxp pro 4k. I don't want a backup of the data I want to extract full images of the device for analysing with forensic tools. The problem is I can't seem to communicate with it. I have the full SDK that is up to date, once navigated to the platform tools folder I opened a command line and typed
Code:
adb devices
after plugging in a USB cable to the OTG port. No prompts appeared on the screen to trust any connections like my iPhone does when I connect it. Adb devices returns no results. So I tried wireless adb, I typed
Code:
adb connect 192.168.x.x
and it said connected. Then when running the devices command I had the ip and port then the word device. I then get a shell by using
Code:
adb shell
Which i then elevate to root by using
Code:
su
. Then when i try an adb pull or adb backup I get a message saying error device offline.
Im new to Android so not even sure I am doing it right. I have done a lot of reading and research but seem to be stuck with the basics. To confirm USB debugging is turned on.

Help required removing Apps and Files that are write protected

Hey Guys,
Been lurking for a while. I want to get into some Android development. I bought a cheap Galaxy Tab s SM-T800 from ebay. It was a retail unit, so came with the usual retail protection, but that was no issue, I've reflashed it and rooted it, it is now running 6.0.1 with build number MMb29K.T800XXU1CRJ1.
The issue is, there are a bunch of apps and files that appear to be left over from the retail demo mode, and I can't remove them. The apps won't uninstall, it just says "uninstall unsuccessful", and the files, when I try to delete them, it just says "failed to delete".
Even after freshly restoring the new firmware, the storage on this device is pretty much zero, a lot of the space being taken up with the files and apps that I can't remove.
There was just about enough space remaining to install System App Remover, but that couldn't delete the files and apps either.
How are these files being write protected? How do I go about removing the write protection? I'm wondering if this device, because it was a retail demo unit, was configured with some kind of write protected partition, which is why the storage is so low, and why I can't delete the apps?
Any thoughts, this is driving me nuts.
Thanks
Install a file manager that allows to mount the partitions in question as READ-WRITE, thus folders/files can get deleted

Thanks, but I can't install any of the file manager apps, as there is not enough free space. I'll need to do it by connecting from Windows. What android partition/file manager would be a good one to use from Windows?

Because your device is rooted, you use ADB ( read: Android Debug Bridge ) - what you've to install on your Windows computer - to manage this device - you must have turned on Developer options -> USB Debugging on it, of course: IMHO the only the chance you have.
Once done so, you connect your device via USB cable with Windows computer, then in Windows command prompt run the commands as follows - one after one:
Code:
adb devices
adb root
adb shell mount -o rw,remount / -t auto
If success then your Android device completly is switched to READ-WRITE mode, you then via further relevant ADB commands can remove folders/files which you consider dispensable, even apps if you know their package name, and so on ...

Thanks for your details.
So I tired this but the adb root command wasn't working. It was coming up with the message:
adbd cannot run as root in production builds
So after a bit of research, I found the adp insecure app from Chainfire, that apparently resolves this exact problem. So I've deployed that to the tab and run it, but now when I connect the tablet to my PC, the PC doesn't connect. I get the charging symbol on the tab, so the connection is in place, but it is not detected by the pc, so I can't connect using adb.
Any suggestions would be much appreciated?
Thanks

I realise I am responding to my own message!
Now that I am running with adb insecure, I have realisd that the USB debugging mode from developer settings is working in reverse. That is, if I enable it, the tab detaches form the PC. If I disable it, the tab reconnects to the pc. However with that setting disabled, and the pc connected, when I then run the command adb devices, it says there are no devices connected (even though I can browse to the tablet through windows explorer)
From within the adb insecure app on the tablet, when I enable the app, I can see it displays a message that says USB debugging is disabled.
I have no idea what is going on here...
Any help much appreciated?
Thanks

Thanks for this. Actually, adbd insecure was just causing more problems. In the end I have resolved this by extracting the PIT file and re-partitioning. Firmware then restored correctly and all the problems are now gone, and there is plenty of free space remaining.
