motochopper would work. I don't have time to write it up, but you could use revone to unlock/s-off then use motochopper to root. Once you have root you could use Rom Manager or Goo to install a recovery.

Hello,
I am fairly sure you need root to use revone to S-off you device.
If you are able to get you bootloader unlocked(this you need a computer, maybe a library or school). You can use an app(link below) to flash a custom recovery to your phone then flash a root tool zip(link below) and give yourself root. You just have to get your bootloader unlocked.

That's a negative ghostrider. You can revone a virgin phone. It's my root process so I don't have to HTCDev unlock.
1. revone
2. install recovery
3. profit

Hello,
Thanks for correcting me. I did it all on my phone so I need root to move the file, change permissions, and for terminal emulator. Have to double check my thoughts next time.

Hello,
I'm not too sure what kind of file it is, but it isn't an app. I would probably say it is some type of bin file(could be totally wrong). I think your best bet to get root is google revone then read about it.
If you don't own a computer your find a public computer you can get adb and fastboot working on and use revone to unlock your phone. Then use fastboot to install a new recovery.
After all that you can get root, but the bottom line is you need a computer with adb and fastboot.
Hope that helps.

You say you're in college!?! There should be computers on campus, at the library, or a friend even. Download the files you need onto your phone, take a data cable with you and bam. Should not take more that 10 min.

[HELP] Unable to install recovert to HTC Cobalt (aka Thunderbolt)

Hello.
I have a friend's Thunderbolt that's called HTC Cobalt in Open Mobile. I unlocked it via HTC dev and it all ran successfully. Now I'm trying to install a recovery (CWM). And all I get is an error.
I tried installing it via Revolutionary, but no go. I also tried the All in One Thunderbolt tool and still no go. Here's a pic of the bootloader:
Is there a way to root this thing properly to add a recovery?
Can u flash 4ext in hboot?

Yes, and it said something about the phone's software being old.
And later attempted to use Zergrush, but it failed.

Well, I had to do an OEM lock just in case cuz he returns it. I told him not to though. Open mobile employees are kind of dumb so it would look better as relocked than unlocked.

I think its the very lastest. He got the phone this past week, and I tried to do a firmware update and it said up to date.

You need to unlock it again in order to put the recovery on it. That will be the only way to get superuser installed.

since youve allready unlocked, heres what id do:
-reunlock(use original token)
-fastboot flash recovery( fastboot flash recovery <recoveryname>.img
you can use any recovery,it doesnt have to be ext 4. i personally refer twrp or amon, but thats up to you.
-flash a rooted stock rom,2.11.605.5 or older
-run revolutionary
despite calling the open mobile modle "cobalt" the hboot screen clearly displays mecha,so theres really no reason revolutionary shouldnt work.
if it is getting some sort of CID error, might try making a gold card and putting it into the phone when running revolutionary.
in a worse case, you can always make a gold card and downgrade to exploitable vzw firmware, and manually write shadowmites permanent patched hboot. after that, you should be able to fastboot oem write cid 11111111 to superCID the TB and then run the open mobile ruu to get back to that firmware.
just holler if you need a download and/or help with the commands
Great post. I will try that. Thanks a TON!!!

check out this thread:
http://androidforums.com/thunderbol...591-help-root-htc-cobalt-aka-thunderbolt.html (i actually found yours while searching for info for the other one )
all he did was run fre3vo and then revolutionary. you can stay relocked and do that(directions here: http://androidforums.com/thunderbolt-all-things-root/418539-thunderbolt-root-unroot-thread.html )
or you can re-unlock,flash recovery, then prolly flash superuser 3.0.7 instead of flashing a stock rom. all that really matters is root acess for revolutionary to work. shouldnt matter if its temp root from fre3vo,or permanent root from htcdev
the main thing is that it worked for him without the use of a gold card.

Well, if your rom boots normally, then you can download ROM flasher or 4rext recovery flasher from the GP. These apps are able to flash recovery under your android/

I was going to suggest that too, but it sounds like he's at the step after unlocking but before the custom recovery which means su hadn't been installed. I believe those apps need su.
OP: are the drivers installed if you are using a windows machine?
Read, Search, Read again, ... Then Ask with Tapatalk 2
yes,ive reinstalled the drivers a couple times.i dont have su yet.im at the step just after unlocking bootloader.

You could try locking the bootloader and running the ruu.exe to set everything back to stock and then start over.

I may end up doing that.there was also recently a htc universal root posted on this site,do u think that would work?

Although the dev claims it does, Ramjet73 tried it and was having trouble getting it to work with the 3d. I wouldn't count on it working, but I do know that the unknownforce/closeone live CD hboot downgrade method and the JB wire trick do work.

Rooting Help

I followed zedomax's rooting video using the HTC unlock method. Although it seemed to work, I still have S on, and nothing is able to use superuser permission. The superuser app is there but, I am unable to update the root directory. Any help is much appreciated. Thanks!

Have you installed a custom recovery yet?
You'll want to get that installed, make a full backup, and then try to root again.
For S-OFF, look up the wire trick.
Yes, I have custom recovery. I've tired the wire trick quite a lot and I can't manage to get it into the correct "brick" state. When you say to try rooting again, do you mean to flash super user zip. I've done this with like 5 different zips with no luck. Thanks again

If you are CDMA, I recommend you follow Ramjet's guide and get the full s-off.

[Q] re root after ROM

I just got another DNA and decided this time to mod it. I hated it stock and bloated. So anyway I did the rumrunner s-off method to unlock and root and everything is going good and I installed the NuSenseSIX Htc m8 port and it's beautiful. Props. But there's an app called trickster mod that I tried to go into and says I don't have root. So I go into superSU and it says I'm missing the SU binaries and that I need to manually 're root it. But Idk if I should do it the same way cause I used the s-off thing or if I should use the htc universal toolkit or something. Any advice would be very helpful

[q] ics root

Ok so I've been tampering a little with my hotspot.....turns out it doesn't work. The phone's not rooted so I was trying to use it legitimately. Well now, since there's hotspot tethering with rooted access, I was wondering what preparations were needed to gain root access.
Phone's hardware:
hboot: 2.28
Android Version: 4.0.3
Software #: 4.05.605.14710RD
I previously updated it a looong time ago when ICS came out in 2012. so I don't know much about how the rooting process has changed for the resound, or if there is any root access with ICS.
Anything at this point helps, I wasted 30 dollars just to find out it doesn't work so... Even if a factory reset would do the trick, I would still like to know about how to root it on ICS.

1. Unlock the bootloader via HTC dev. htcdev.com
2. Flash a recovery, TWRP, CWM, PhilZ. Whatever your choice may be
3. Find a root zip from online, probably from Chainfire.
4. Flash it in recovery.
If you need a step by step guide I can provide that either through this post or through PM

Yes, you can't acquire root access through just flashing a recovery.. I'm trying to find the zip you can flash.. if it's still out there. I'm not sure.

Never seen that before... But if you are going to be flashing a ROM it isn't needed as much because most ROMs have it built in..

You can try Framaroot or Towelroot, but I can't confirm they work.
