[Q]Flash Custom Kernel on Rooted Stock ROM 4.2.2 - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys,
I would like to know if it is possible to flash custom kernel such as boeffla on rooted S3 with stock ROM(xxume7,4.2.2)?
I see most threads recommending on 4.12/CM10.1....but looking one for 4.2.2

If I am not wrong, there is not yet a 4.2.2 kernel as the source are not out yet.

Follow the instructions flash is either via Odin or CWM .
Is it going to brick my phone?
Not if its the correct kernel .

How to know which kernel is correct?
As of now I am using Sensation rom which has Siyah kernel 2.5.2 and I want to flash speedmod kernel or N.E.A.K. Kernel,
N.E.A.K. Kernel only supports sammy roms
I tried to search but I could not find out if Sensation rom is aosp or sammy do you have any idea of it?
also does speedmod kernel support both as nothing it written about it on its thread
Thanks

Normally on the first page of a rom thread you will get a description what is the rom. For example MIUI is well MIUI. Hyperdroid is sammy deodex rom with of course modifications and tweaks in the build to make it better than stock.
Sensation rom is sammy deodex no aosp nothing like that. And when you normally look for an AOSP rom it normally would say it in the heading of the thread anyway.
On the kernel thread it has a guide of what roms the kernel works on and which ones it does not. Siyah works basically with any rom. CM7 to AOSP to sammy deodex. Regarding Simone's kernel which is the NEAK version or something like that it is based on only sammy stock deodex roms and that is mainly the ones in original development and android..just look out for deodex, sammy and stock rom
AS above its all a question of reading the info on the first page of the kernel post .
Plus if it does not work flash another one .
the Neak kernel should be ok been on mine for a few days .
Speedmod likewise ok have used it before .

Thanks everyone for their wonderful help!
I have got one last question
Speedmod kernel says "it is only for Samsung Gingerbread ROMs. It will not work with CyanogenMod or MIUI ROMS!"
does this means it will not work with sensation rom?
Edit: ok looks like the different versions are just the updated ones
But still the question is if it supports sensation rom?

Now, if you look at the VERY FIRST page for SensatioN ROM,, it says:
SensatioN ROM Features:
-Based on Samsung Firmware XWKK5 Android 2.3.6
With all of this information, you should be able to deduce that the Speedmod kernel WILL work with your ROM. If you still don't understand, I'm going to suggest you don't flash anything to your phone, for fear of ending up with a paperweight.
Ok this time I understand everything
I didn't knew that Sammy roms means that the ROM is based on Samsung's stock ROM
Also I thought that speedmod only works on stock ROM so all this things got me confused
But anyways now its all clear

[Q] Does speedmod work on jelly bean rom?

Hi all. I am new to rooting and I just rooted my sgs2 with gingerbread speedmod kernel and I am in Stock gingerbread rom. I wanted to install the revolt jelly bean rom and was wondering whether I need kernels like dreams or Siyah. One of my friends said it would be fine on GB speedmod. So if it does work I might try to install it

[Q] Which Kernel Should I Root and flash with ?

Hello and Good Day Devs !
I am kind of a newbie in the world of rooting (for samsung galaxy s2 gt i9100). So i just recently got my dad's permission to root and flash a custom rom on my device . I am currently using a samsung galaxy s2 gt-i9100 running jelly bean 4.1.2 XWLST . Am from India and i am highly confused. So i would like to know which kernel would be the best for rooting my phone (best i.e. safe , bugless) After rooting i am planning to flash a custom rom. I would Most probably flash the PACman ROm (jelly bean 4.2.2) and would like to know which kernel would suit the rom. rather i would like to know which kernel is supported by the PACman rom. i searched and read a few threads and concluded that siyah is a bit buggy causing a lot of problems . Philz is a good kernel but i also read that PhilZ's kernel is not supported by a few roms. I also checked out the 'jeboo" kernel and found out that it was somehow related to the PHilZ kernel and eventually backed out . So pease help me out devs .. any help would be appreciated and thanks a lot for your co-operation
Whatever kernel you flash will be overwritten when you flash your custom rom.......every custom rom comes with its own kernel......
So the choice is yours......
Select your kernel and flash it however the instructions say, then flash your custom rom.....job done.....no issues/worries about incompatiability........

start with siyah kernel v6.0b5
It is the safest kernel to start with
Then flash pacman
It is your choice to flash a new kernel over the stock pacman kernel
You can flash whatever custom kernel you like and as @keithross39 mentioned dont worry about incompatibility
Use odin
Gud luck mate
The only time you have to think about kernel compatiability is if you decide to flash a kernel on top of your custom rom. As I previously mentioned, the kernel you flash to root your phone will be overwritten when you flash the rom, so no incompatiability will exist because you will have basically erased that kernel during the flash. But any kernel you flash on top of your new rom HAS to be compatiable or you'll end up with an unuseable phone......

Thanks A lot devs . I will now root my phone and flash the rom ! thanks a lot for your help!

[Q] Any custom 4.4 kernals?

I think that somewhere it was said that 4.3 and 4.4 kernels were similar. I of course wouldn't recommend flashing a 4.3 kernel to 4.4 but you could always do it yourself if you accept the risks.
