Dual boot? - Verizon Samsung Galaxy Note II

I'm sorry I keep asking noob questions. I'm curious if there is a way to dual boot... I searched around a lot 1 this I'd a huge forum 2 all I found was stuff for other devices. 3 why would I want to dual boot? In my dream land I can keep jealybean21 all set up how I like it... and flash a dual boot carbon to try out or mean bean ice or what ever all.. and if I hate t or experience issues I could simply reboot to good old jellybean21... so if anyone knows a link or if it's a possibility I would really appreciate it.
The two other things I kick around in my head are is there a set up or use guide for all these tweaks jb21 has? I want to improve battery but I'm Leary off messing with settings I don't yet understand.
And I tried several times to get a swap of internal and external sd to work even the one in jb21 installer didn't work right... this note 2 has great screen ok battery but the 10Gb sinks... I've had out several times where the stupid sd0 and external are mirrored at 10 Gb thus making me feel like killing myself for spending 80 dollars on a class 10 super fast 64 Gb Micro sd... lol. Right now I'm using it like normal but apps full that 10 Gb fast. Thank you all very much for all the help... still wishing a bit that I would have gotten an iPhone 5

You need a kernel which supports dual boot. And we do have one:victory:

Ok thank you

But, go here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2299261 and READ EVERYTHING. (including linked threads)
When you are done reading it ALL, please read it all again.
Then you should know what to do from there to get working dual boot.

[ROM] CR_Mod_1.35.531_OTA Full ROM

Hey guys... its been a looooong night but i wanted to get something out for u so i worked and worked and finally came up with a ROM from the new OTA... This is the retail ROM (1.27.531) with the whole OTA applied taking you to 1.35.531... The newest radio is included, the ROM is rooted, apps2sd is also included so this one should be a go... Im tired as hell right now so i will modify this post and also post a changelog later after my nap.... but i wanted u guys to have somethin to play with and so i traded sleep for ur guys enjoyment (hopefully) lol... Anyways, without further chit chat i give you CR_Mod_1.35.531_OTA... I suggest a backup and a wipe, although the ROM will wipe upon install... I am nt responsible for anything that may happen to ur device upon flashing so proceed at ur own risk... Have fun, hope u enjoy..... CR
CR_Mod_1.35.531_OTA
For those who are wondering what the OTA does itself, heres the words straight from T-Mobile... OTA
For a2sd... heres a little help so u dnt have to read the whole thread... sorry guys, been busy with some RL issues...

This rom, unlike SMR5r1, does NOT move dalvik-cache to sd by default, which is why everyones internal storage still seems to fluxuate when downloading apps..

ALso, dont forget to run the command
a2sd install (so it gets installed/enabled)
But don't forget to wipe your ext partition or make the partition. ANd if you already have a swap parition it'll automatically use it.
ry, you're the shizzy son! thanks for all the hard work
awesome...you really are the best....thanks for trading sleep for us all...lol again thanks im gonna enjoy this
Is swap enabled?
find out for yourself!
why in the hell would u need swap?
lol thats where im sitting, i see no need for anything more than we already have... minus an OC kernel that goes past 691 lol
Will try this later when I get home. I don't wanna have to start fresh while I'm at work.

Swap makes your phone run twice as fast as the Nexus One!
I was kidding guys, hence the smiley next to my question...
Sorry, old habit, back in the G1 days we used to do that sarcastically because we knew a noob would ask it sooner or later. That or anything else that was obviously stated in the OP.
ok ok I'll do my part and keep the clutter down.. Happy Friday
Just flashed this and it is running smooth...
The app SUFBS force closes everytime I open it, and I cannot sign into my gmail account over wifi...
Went back to mr1v4 because needed a working camera/camcorder. Gonna give this a shot, thanks CR!
try signing in via mobile then connecting wifi after signed in?
just got my 1st random reboot.....runs smooth tho lol

I'm getting alot of fc on apps that I let google reinstall from backup. Gonna try wiping ext and reinstalling apps...
Re the whole swap debate....
I know cyanogen's position is that it increases latency to have swap on anything but the lowest memory devices (aka the g1).
That being said, I run a swap partition on my duel core ubuntu machine with 8gb of memory.
I don't know, but would suspect the only reason not to run swap on every device has to do with the lower read / write speeds on sdcards.
Fwiw my slide *felt* faster using a 96meg swap partition / swapper (paid app) / and a class 6 sdcard.
Much appreciated chief, I know from twitter you had some other personal events to celebrate so extra thanks for careing enough about us to push this out so fast.

If you're going to run swap, which I don't particularly recommend on a mobile device, I *highly* recommend splurging on a class 10 sdcard.

ok so after checking wiki on class ratings for sd cards, im seeing class 2 has a 16 mbps rating for write, class 6 has 48 and class 10 has 80.. most all of us are using the 8 gig class 2 that came with our phones, and it would cost a pretty penny to jump up to class 10 but would it really be worth it?

It's only worth it if you're doing a lot of read/write access to your card via swap or some other process. I simply bought mine to be on the bleeding edge of solid-state mini memory. My class 10 16 GB card cost me about $100 when it came out. Probably a bit cheaper now.

is this it?

What have samsung done? Im kinda lost for words right now.
My opinion is that Samsung/android killed the iphone 4S with the SGSII, (even though only a small % of people realized it) but have they killed the need for devs with the SGSIII?
I took the day off work "sick" (it makes me think im not a complete slave to the machine) and once my wife dropped the boys at school and went to work, i jumped on my bike and went for a ride.
I cut it short. After about 45 mins I pulled up home and couldn't get my SGSIII out of my pocket fast enough. (I had to put it back in my pocket to get my helmet off)
It's been rooted and CWM is installed and im just itching for a good ROM to hit the threads, then it hit me.... does it need much done to it? I don't mean customizing it, but tweaking it.
My X10 was the first smart phone i owned and I couldn't get custom roms and kernels on it fast enough. And until a week ago I was flashing roms on it every 24 hours trying to get the most out of the limited ram it had
But to be honest, I haven't felt one bit of lag with everything iv'e done to the SGSIII...(still with bloatware) Iv'e bought a few resource hungry games from the market and it's killed em all.... I feel so f**king happy but also let down that a custom rom isn't "really" needed.
Does it need tweaks? apart from getting good bench mark scores?
I'm thinking that I might be happy with just a kernel which i can undervolt a bit to push the battery life a bit more...
One problem with the X10 roms is that a lot were just themed with the same scripts used from different roms... Hopefully that doesn't happen here and there are just a handful of GREAT roms to choose from.. My opinion is that Samsung have KILLED it.. well done
Am i tripping? What do you guys think. Can/should more be pushed out of the phone?
Maybe it's time for game developers to start pushing the limits?
For now it may seem so but custom roms offer more than just better performance and in the future apps evolve to more recource hungry ones etc so customising may be needed or handy at least..

Yeah I agree, anything with a gig of ram or less will soon feel like a Nokia 5210 lol...
And I have no doubt the devs here could/will bring out some roms that are twice as good. It just feels like Samsung are fighting two classes below their weight limit haha

Girlfriends Droid X2. suggestions/advice appreciated

ok so first of all, HI
secondly, my GF's DX2, currently 2.3.5 and rooted, is a mess. serious lag issues, so much so that its fast approaching the "chuck it through a brick wall" threshold. i've got very little (but some) experience installing custom roms and such on my xperia play, about two weeks experience actually, not a lot but ive been very successful with it as i follow directions very closely and am comfortable trying new things but not reckless about it. especially when its not MY phone.
ive been reading up in this forum for a few days now and wanted to see if i can get someone to tell me the pros and cons of my options and suggest any further modifications i can make to remove her phone from her "Things that cause me stress" list. my GF is a bit of a minimalist and doesnt want 10k apps on her phone and has no use for the vast majority of stuff that comes preinstalled on the stock ROM. however, since im the techie type and any time something isnt working right she comes to me to figure it out, i need to have some tools that i can use to fix whatever problems she has as well as "pretty it up" a bit.
as such i am considering installing one of the following and yes, i realize ill have to SBF to 2.3.4 before doing so:
Eclipse Barebones 1.3 final
or
Molten 2.3 final
but these are just my initial thoughts, if anyone has any insight i will happily consider alternatives. i dont much care what all i have to do in the short term as long as it makes her phone is a happy camper, but this is also something i want to do like, once, and maybe again next year or something. im not looking for frequent updates or whatever (which is why i chose the "final" options) just something that is stable and non-irritating.
as for a tool for me i was considering the ROM Toolbox by jrummy(i think), i have it on my phone and love it, but im not 100% that it would be a good choice for the DX2 or if it would even be necessary considering the roms i intend to install. any and all input/alternatives are appreciated.
MIght want to narrow down what the specific issues you are concerned about might be since no ROM or OTA is perfect.
SBF to 2.3.4 then root and flash CM7. Let it rock. All the features of ROM manager are not X2 friendly and I would avoid it if possible. CM7 comes with it and DZK says do not use it.
That's what is on my old X2 and my bride uses is everyday.

mainly we just need the phone, texting, the camera, and the ability to play a few minor games like spades and some toddler games for my 2 year old. as it stands when you open the camera it lags for like 30 seconds before opening and then has trouble focusing at best, and locks up or reboots at worst.i would suspect some kind of hardware issue but we just got the thing a month or so ago and its been like this since about the 2nd day.

i though CM7 was one of those that had a ton of stuff that came with it and is something that needs updated frequently? if im mistaken then awesome. as for ROM manager, im glad i asked before using it then. thanks any alternatives to the other aspects of ROM Toolbox?
thanks for the replies
I have tried several of the ROMs and have had the best luck with CM7 on the X2. My bride isn't exactly technologically savy. It has had the very least of troubles for her and very rarely needs a battery pull or tweaking.
I just loaded 3 of Zepplinrocks scripts on it for her. Its running like a top and hasn't missed a beat.
I ran CM9 when I had it and loved it. But I have no worries with CM7.
As for a substitute for ROM toolbox, just let it ride how it is. If you just want to tinker with it, run the scripts a briefly mentioned above. Let me know if you need the links.

sweet. will give it a shot.
I strongly suggest Eclipse 2.2.1. If she wants something that works and works well, and you don't want to have to worry about applying additional patches to make sure things are stable, well then this would deff. be the one to go with.
GL and let us know how it goes.

well alrighty then. since i dont have to downgrade to do eclipse i guess i can give that a shot first and see how it goes. if that doesnt suffice ill give CM7 a shot and go from there.

so far so good. eclipse is installed, v6 supercharger is installed(though as far as correctly configured ive no real idea) and was very snappy... right up until she decided to install scramble with friends. so i did some googling and found this
"Game - Scramble With Friends (Zynga) - it has a really annoying memory leak, but it's fun to play. Unfortunately due to very poor coding it frequently freezes my phone."
so i scratch my head and look at her app management page. sure enough scramble is using 130 MB of ram, FAR more than anything else. well hell. it seems ive found the culprit and that ive done an awful lot of unnecessary work with ROMs and tweaks and other various annoyances all with very little, if any, positive results aside from eclipse being very attractive. one thing i dont quite understand though... i have scramble on my phone and it doesnt cause me this kind of headache. any thoughts?

What phone do you have? As with all hardware in the device world no two makes and models handle things the same including but not limited to hardware it's self. So if you are running a different device that can explain it. Also in theroy the SD card that is her phone could come into play, by this it would have to do with the class of card. Class 4 is the typical card you buy from say Walmart and alike where as say class 10 would be a better performance. Again the SD card coming into play is only in THEORY.

i have an xperia play r800x 2.3.3 loaded with DarkForest 3.05.
the SDcards we have are identical 8GB cards. i got a buy one get one free deal on newegg. anyway, she's been using eclipse for a lil bit now and seems very happy with it. only thing is that she has to force stop scramble when she's finished playing or it slowly begins to eat all of her ram. other than that all is good. battery life is almost double what it was before, everything is snappy(as long as scramble isnt running) and life is good.

[Q]About Swap (Virtual RAM)

Do adverse effects occur (like constant lagging) if I keep my Swap STILL ON on a long term basis? Like keeping the swap activated for a week? Without swapping off?
I try to keep it for a few days cause I ALWAYS multitask, and it's quite a hassle to swapping it ON and OFF...
Oh yeah, by the way, just an advance statement: If you guys/gals will advice me that using swap harms your phone/sdcard, well I don't really care about it, just don't push your "beliefs" about swap (cause I'm sick of it) and just answer my question... We cool, bro?
Wow, that last chunk was unnecessary...
Swap is very device/ROM/user dependent and what happens to you with swap might not happen to me
Yes many older devices running some very heavy-on-the-ram-use ROMs will need swap to work well at all but leaving it on will be safe if you find it needed
To answer your question no adverse effects in a week other than you find in one day, you can leave it on just fine
I do advice to do some searching to get a better grasp of Linux swap, once you understand how it works then you will understand how to use it most effectively

Best alternative phone to SGS4? Is it the LG G2 or another?

If I were to get rid of my ME7 SGS4 because I want to get back to freely flashing custom roms and kernels and I dont wanna sacrifice too much performance what phone(s) should I be looking at? My carrier is VZW.

Yea, unfortunately both the HTC One and LG G2 are crippled in respect to expandable storage.
Both a good phones but, crippled nonetheless.
Ye it is unfortunate, I luckly got the S4 days before they started to throw the newly update locking the phone. But I am still thinking of switching to htc one because it just feels nicer. Bad thing is the camera but I rarely use it. Be sure to get 32 gb version if you are switching otherwise you will suffer!
I have both the HTC One and the Galaxy S4. I don't find the lack of removable memory or battery a problem on the HTC One. It's a great phone and s-off makes it even better! The devs are starting to come around to the One because of that fact. I am running ViperOne right now and my battery lasts all day long with normal to heavy use. The 32g internal memory is enough for me. I just have learned not to keep so many backups and have to delete my downloads every once in a while.
I love the S4 as well. I just wish s-off was a possibility. That would push it past the One for me. The camera is much better IMHO.
P.S. I do like Sense better than Touchwiz
Depending on what build the htc is on you might be in the same boat. I didnt know too much about htc and traded an iphone for a one but the guy flashed 4.3 on it so im screwed til the dev figure it out. Make sure the phone didnt tske the 4.3 ota. Are at least was s off and bootloader unlocked beforehand. Theres a lot of bricked lg g2's on the g2 forum due to ota's.

Won't work for me. I've burned through 55GB of my 64GB card on my S4.
Fo those that think the build quality (plastic) on the S4 is crap, I agree.
I got an element case and it hides the crap from me with an external metal frame.
I'm afraid the days of removable memory and batteries are coming to an end. I think we all better get used to it.

My S4 may be with me for years then....At this point, I really don't need any more fluff in a phone but I do need memory and extsd cards gives that to me. Integral battery will not work for me, why I never got an Ipod.
I've thought about getting either the One or the G2 quite few times myself and I just think I couldn't have a phone that doesn't have a 64gig card and a 5200mah battery. Crack flashing just isn't a big enough pull for me to do it.
And a big plus to stay with my S4 is I'm following Hashcode and jeebo and others trying to get kexec support for us on SS and from what I just read they're closer than ever. Maybe they're still a ways away... But its a still something.

My wife needed to update phone from her tbolt. She is as careful shopper as u can find. An hour in the Verizon store and she walked out with s4...now her phones we leave stock. She made decision on camera...memory expansion and replaceable battery as well as performance. She couldn't tell you I had a s4...and I offered no suggestions. She looked at every smart phone they carried. So I say our s4 s will be around a long time

I came from a Razr that also did not have a removable battery and after that... Never again. When you buy it its great for a while, everything seems good, but after using the phone for a few months your battery life is terrible. Now I realize the g2 and One have a bigger battery but I'm assuming the same will apply. Just not worth it to me. I can go two full days of extremely heavy use with screen at max brightness, Gps, bluetooth everything on and be all good.
I don't miss having to use my phone while plugged Into a car charger doing all sorts of damage to the charging port long term.
