[Q]About Swap (Virtual RAM) - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Do adverse effects occur (like constant lagging) if I keep my Swap STILL ON on a long term basis? Like keeping the swap activated for a week? Without swapping off?
I try to keep it for a few days cause I ALWAYS multitask, and it's quite a hassle to swapping it ON and OFF...
Oh yeah, by the way, just an advance statement: If you guys/gals will advice me that using swap harms your phone/sdcard, well I don't really care about it, just don't push your "beliefs" about swap (cause I'm sick of it) and just answer my question... We cool, bro?

Wow, that last chunk was unnecessary...
Swap is very device/ROM/user dependent and what happens to you with swap might not happen to me
Yes many older devices running some very heavy-on-the-ram-use ROMs will need swap to work well at all but leaving it on will be safe if you find it needed
To answer your question no adverse effects in a week other than you find in one day, you can leave it on just fine
I do advice to do some searching to get a better grasp of Linux swap, once you understand how it works then you will understand how to use it most effectively

Haha, I added that chunk since every dang time I ask something in relation to Swap, some dudes/gals spawns out of nowhere and then advices me NOT to use Swap, and it really irritates me...

SPB Shell 3D now out - anyone getting it?

So it finally came out and it looks fantastic. But it's carrying a pretty steep price tag at $15. https://market.android.com/details?id=com.spb.shell3d&feature=search_result
I'm curious:
1) Is anyone getting this?
2) Does it actually work with the XT720?
Am curious too!! I wouldn't mind shelling those dollars if it actually works on my device. Cause it looks damn neat and promising.
However they should give a list of devices which are supported and yet to be supported.
I still dint go for it cause I don't know if it is compatible with Dell Streak 5.
peace out!
SAM
Had a chance to try it out with the 15 minute window refund. Works fine on XT720. Pretty cool and smooth, but I don't know if I'm actually going to purchase it.
i don't like it
is too WM6 like
I also think this is a cool homescreen. But does anyone know how much this thing drains the battery?

Mine didn't load until I tried like twice I think. Then again it could be an issue with the rom - lots of people seem to be complaining about it working and then no longer working once they switched roms. I'm not using Khal's atm and I'm not even considering buying it until I use the ROM and I see SPB works with it.

I think Khal's minfree parameters are probably too strict. I got those random program deaths when I was trying really strict levels. Too much free memory can be a bad thing

I was thinkng maby i should mess with the VM Heap size?
If there was a way to get it working with the good ROMs without sacrificing too much, that would be great. It looks good and I know they are already planning to release more widgets (+WM users seem to have a lot of faith in SPB's dev skills and updates) so I'm potentially interested in getting this - if it works.

Thanks! I'll probably check out SPB again then once I move to V4.
If anyone needs it for free plz tell me!
It used to work on my stock rom....didn't try it on v4....

The new version works just fine on V4 for me without swap, but it slows the entire phone down so not really ideal for everyday use atm. They'll have to do some more work on RAM consumption I think.

OverClock

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1158951
That can probably be done with this phone since it uses the same chipset as the E3D and Sensation. Once I get mine next tuesday/wednesday ill see what I can do about getting this module to work.
If anyone takes a look at it, post anything you have tried. This could in theory at the very least allow an undervolt which would help offset the LTE power sucking.

Coming from the bravoc which has almost zero development aside from 2fast at his site I am used to just thinking of things to try. I was able to port a couple dinc roms to it even though I was told it couldn't be done. I hope to be much more involved with development here since there are already more posts in this section than there were in a year at the site dedicated to the bravoc

It took a few days to get that inc port almost bugfree (usb pc transfer wouldn't work) but it was otherwise fine iirc. I hope that with support and other work to use as examples i can make some stuff for this device that isn't either a variation of AOSP or a sense port that has some serious drawbacks.
I am personally more interested in the possibility of underclocking and undervolting than OCing. Or maybe OCing and undervolting like I did with my droid x - can really help save some battery and allow the phone to sip less juice. This phone is so new I am getting ahead of myself, but hopefully in time we can get root/roms/OCing and undervolting apps to work on the Rezound.
I normally run my battery on performance mode on all my phones. I set it to normal, and with the equivalent usage I get 1/3 better battery life. I even leave all my antenna's on(except WiFi when I am away).
Just to let everyone know what I tried. I took the file for "unsupported phones" from the link's thread and changed the version number to match the rezound, which is -- 2.6.35.13-g20c5d1d -- . As you can see it was not just the ending part starting with the 'g' that needed to be changed as ours is 2.6.35.13 and the file was made for 2.6.35.10. But since a reboot resets everything I tried it by changing only the part starting with 'g' and it failed saying "Exec format error". So I then changed the entire version string to match ours and adb actually completed the task but the phone rebooted immediately and everything was wiped out again.
I did this before the kernel source was put up on the forums but since I dont have ANY knowledge of messing with kernels I am no help there, but hopefully this can help someone get this mod going for the Rezound.
we don't have perma root like the 3vo did so I don't think this will work until then. But this was a band aid until the kernel source was released so this won't even be necessary anymore.

The guy who made Setcpu made a script that allowed oc on the stock kernel on the 3D. It was before perm root. It was right after agrabren found the first exploit and a reboot would return the phone to stock. You temp rooted ran the script from adb and used Setcpu to oc.. Some of the smoothest kernel action the 3D had.. I'm sure same thing is potentially there, just need someone smart enough to do..

Cool. I did find a tidbit that might (don't get your hopes up and basically pretend I didn't even say this) make root last longer. Obviously until I have my rezound for the next few days I can't even think about testing anything.

Since I happened to venture to theses parts since our buddy plat ventured to this. I am a bit surprised to see you switched. How ever the module you are talking about in the op I am pretty sure you can't just hex edit the kernel version. As the kernel will be different for the device compared to that of the evo 3d. If it is anything like doing the g2 version for the htc merge that is. Where it had to be recompiled to work correctly.
I am sure one of the dev's familiar in here with building source code could get it done up. If it works after that I am unsure. Though con you ported the sense hd rom from the inc to the desire. That was the only one that you had ported. Followed by you followed samuel2706's guide and other info he gave you. Then you came to me to ask how I fixed the mms and verizon branding in the rom. In which I told you how to fix it but you put it off as you fixed it. As you are putting off in here.

[Q] Rooting noob: Benefits, worth it or not and how to?

First off, I would like to say that I have been actively reading and searching the web for information on these topics and I have found many different sources and answers.
The reason why I am still starting a new threat about this is because I am completely new to the 'development'/modifying spectrum of my phone. And while many of the threats give accurate descriptions on how to root it or what to use, I still am left with many noobi blanks on this topic.
1. Rooting, what exactly are the benefits and what will be altered if I decide to root my device?
2. Is it worth it to root my phone? What's the major benefits and new things I will be able to do? And are there any problems or dangers I need to be aware of? (I've been using it for almost a year without doing so) Also, is there a way I could backup my current files and data and then place it back on the rooted device?
3. I've read about ways of rooting in which the kernel will be altered and about some in which it won't even be touched. So, what is the, let me put it bluntly, 'best' rooting technique/way to go with?
Thank you for any help possible on this topic!

Well that was one of my many blanks. I know many friends who rooted their phones, but not for what exactly besides having different themes or the 'toiletpaper' scrolling in the menue section.
What kind of apps require rooting then?
I do want to start 'playing' around with my phone a bit more to use it to it's full potential, including overclocking for instance.

No shame in asking this question. Before I rooted my phone I spent a few weeks lurking on this forum, and constantly asking a friend with a 'droid phone about what is it - eventually the true power comes to you when you root and see for yourself. But one of the rooting "landmarks" are
- backing and restoring your applications via Titanium Backup
- Undervolting/Underclocking or overclocking and tweaking your phone (therefore gaining some more battery life/performance)
- use of various plugins such as Chainfire3D + CF.Lumen (you can buy&play games not initially intended for S2 and improve your night time use with the latter)
- many more cool things that you will find out for yourself
hope it gave you a little insight about the power you unleash.

Thanks for the quick insight and info!
-So is there actually no way in the current unrooted state to do these backups? I've been looking around for quite a while now for backing up my phone's content. Besides Kies that doesn't even cover everything I've come up empty. And how I could back up my conversations for instance (if that is even possible), but I haven't found anything on that matter.
- This is one of the aspects I was most interested in, at first of course only for the overclocking aspect, but then I read about the battery saving as well. Is there an easy way to switch back and forth between running the phone overclocked and underclocked?
Yep it indeed did!

If by conversations you mean your SMS, you CAN back up and restore SMS withOUT root using one of several apps. I use SMS Backup+; it backs SMS and MMS messages to your GMail account, and can restore SMS. It cannot restore MMS as of yet though.

You can use SetCPU to create profiles based on what state the phone is in, such as screen on/off.
It looks more and more like I will root my phone right away as soon as I get the chance to sit down and do it!!
Thanks for clarifying those questions!
Yes I did mean my SMS and MMS conversations. Downloading that app right away
That sounds like an app I will definitely get then as soon as I get my phone rooted!
One last question for you though, do you happen to know what the 'dangers' are regarding phone/battery life when constantly switching CPU profiles?

There's always a danger when creating CPU profiles. Especially if you mess with the voltages assigned to each frequency. Just make sure you back your phone up before you mess with that stuff, so you have something to fall back to in case your tweaking causes the phone to not boot properly.

I was talking about getting the SMS Backup + right away, which I already did.
And about the SetCPU as soon as I get my phone rooted.
Alright, yes backups are always an important thing to do. So we are talking more of software dangers though (not booting up correctly, stuff messing up or not launching, crashes etc.) rather than any hardware damage that could be caused?
Also, is there by any chance anyone who has a rooted Galaxy SII and can tell me some specific improvements about it compared to the unrooted version?

Oh now that I reread that I see what you mean. I am aware that the rooting it's self will not improve/worsen the performance of the phone or anything else.
I more meant what kind of improvements can be made as soon as the device is rooted. Eg. the CPU tweaks and additional energy consumption differences and applications that can be run on the rooted device etc. and how these compare to the possibilites that one has with the stock phone.
Sorry for the confusion!
There are far too many variables involved to give you an idea of the things you're asking. These will depend on the kernel you use, how you use the phone, how you set it up, under/overclocking/volting, and a bunch of other things.
You're only going to find out by actually doing.
But in saying that, I would advise against anything until you understand exactly what it is you want to do & how to do it. Doing so could save at least a few days trying to figure out how to fix a soft bricked phone, or ending up with a 130-odd gram paperweight at worst.

Hi, I've read this thread with interest, as when I got my sgs2 I didn't know that rooting was even possible! Another guy on my office got the same phone though, and asked if I was planning on rooting my phone. I guess I first did it with my eyes pretty well closed, but was lucky that everything went well.
One thing I would say is that I get much better battery life as there is endless scope for changing roms and kernels until you are happy. I've now upgraded to XXLPB on Simplistic Rom and am really happy. Great battery life and smooth performance, so no complaints. If I were you I would go for it, but make sure you do your research first!

1. during my call, i turned the phone face down and it automatically turn to speaker. which was mentioned by engadget and ac, but see it working and give convenience, it is a good fun.
2. go to settings->apps-> all, I can actually disable quite a number of pre-installed bloats, without root or any other hacks. this is awesome. for example, amazon, viewnidi, vz navigator, vz backup plus all those bs, i can disable them, without worrying that if it will fc later or cause trouble =).
oh, disabling those stuff can give me much lower memory usage, and improve battery life because many of them are running at the background.
Guess what Titanium Backup uses to freeze apps by default on Android 4.x. It just uses that Disable feature as far as I can tell.
A few times when I've pulled my phone out friends have mostly just commented on the size, but I don't go on about it with non-tech people usually. I try not to be too showy.
As for cool stuff to do with it, it's really kind of gotten me in to digging in and finding mods to do to it on my own. I haven't really done that so much on my previous phones; only relied on pre-done mods, like I got the recent apps button to turn in to a menu button a good bit before anyone on the thread seemed to get it working, although a lot of the issues probably have to do with people using plain notepad, when better luck would probably be had with a "programmer's" notepad that'd probably load and save with UNIX style newlines.
Also, it gives quite a phone-bulge.

Certain apps/processes can't be disabled in stock Android, but TiBu let's me freeze them.
Honestly Youtube has to be the most impressive thing you can show anyone... the HD quality over 4g is simply great and then they try to load the same video on their apple crap and it looks like 8 bit mario... just make sure its a newer video from within the last year or so or the quality will be horrid.
mainly because everyone has that app and can compare side by side... and be like wow

That's when you may run into problem.
Having root access and do stuff like that, will give unexpected drags in some apps which will affect your battery life or other functions.
For example if some functions or apps are providing system level service to others, and unfortunately if some applications uses them.. and you frozed them... then it is totally depending on the app developers' handling in such case.
either kept polling , or throwing exceptions, FCs etc.

Dual boot?

I'm sorry I keep asking noob questions. I'm curious if there is a way to dual boot... I searched around a lot 1 this I'd a huge forum 2 all I found was stuff for other devices. 3 why would I want to dual boot? In my dream land I can keep jealybean21 all set up how I like it... and flash a dual boot carbon to try out or mean bean ice or what ever all.. and if I hate t or experience issues I could simply reboot to good old jellybean21... so if anyone knows a link or if it's a possibility I would really appreciate it.
The two other things I kick around in my head are is there a set up or use guide for all these tweaks jb21 has? I want to improve battery but I'm Leary off messing with settings I don't yet understand.
And I tried several times to get a swap of internal and external sd to work even the one in jb21 installer didn't work right... this note 2 has great screen ok battery but the 10Gb sinks... I've had out several times where the stupid sd0 and external are mirrored at 10 Gb thus making me feel like killing myself for spending 80 dollars on a class 10 super fast 64 Gb Micro sd... lol. Right now I'm using it like normal but apps full that 10 Gb fast. Thank you all very much for all the help... still wishing a bit that I would have gotten an iPhone 5

You need a kernel which supports dual boot. And we do have one:victory:
Ok thank you

But, go here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2299261 and READ EVERYTHING. (including linked threads)
When you are done reading it ALL, please read it all again.
Then you should know what to do from there to get working dual boot.
