[Q] digitizer blown - wrong CWM flashed.. how to flash counter reset? - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello all,
a friend of mine had the bad idea to play a little bit with his S3, and he flashed a wrong CWM (the touch note2 i suppose)
i've reflashed a stock rom with Odin as the phone wasn't booting even in recovery, but at the first stock bootup the touch didn't seem to work.
I reflashed liquidsmooth but the problem remains the same - i think the higher voltage of the CWM crashed the digitizer badly - so it's not a software problem that i can fix.
Now the real probem is... how to reset the flash counter in order to send the phone for replacement? I have a self-made USB jig for my old S2 but it's not resetting the flashcounter - just booting in download mode.
is there some way to reset the counter giving the fact that i can't install anything or click on something as the touch isn't working?
thanks for any kind of advice

you mean they are not going to repair it or just that it's not correct to flashcount reset and send it for a warranty repair.... ?

well... you are right, but just being honest and explaining everything that happened in the post, has the effect of nobody helping about binary count reset?
whatever.... i think my friend should have guilty conscience if he is sending his self-inflicted damage s3 for warranty.. not you - nor i.
thanks anyway...

What i am saying is that they will spot its user damage .
I certainly don't feel guilty about it .

Follow the link in my signature for general - sticky roll-up.
In there are 2 guides to return to stock and use triangle away to reset the flash counter. The second one has more detail about triangle away so suggest you read both.
Just remember you need to use an OTG cable and usb mouse as a surrogate for the lack if touch input

me neither - i was indeed searching for a solution.
I don't really think they will be checking if the circuit really has received more voltage or stuff.
@rootSU: the mouse with an OTG cable is indeed a good idea - worth trying. Thanks!

well.. IT WORKED! the idea didn't even came in my mind as time ago i've tried the OTG cable with a mouse but never worked. Maybe a mouse issue.
Binary count reset was successfull (i did it on my s3 now too, you never know...., thanks chainfire!) and i've reinstalled the official firmware.
I'm just in doubt for the CSC / region as my friend imported it but not sure if from Germany or somewhere else. What if i install an official firmware with italian CSC? you should be able to do it using Kies too, so it should be safe for warranty.. ?
thanks! :victory:

I don't think they care

[Q] [HELP] ClockWorkMod backup bricked my phone??

hi everybody!
all the steps below were taken from galaxys2root.com as well as the files
i have i9100 with a stock rom 2.3.4 (ki4) (and 1.4gb of free memory-maybe that was the problem).
yesterday i rooted it (everything was fine) and then i installed CWM recovery 4.0.1.4 through odin v1.85 (went fine too) and then on my way to find myself a new rom i decided to backup my current one with cwm. then i entered cwm by pressing vol-down+pwr+home and hit "backup". it backed up the system and then moved on to the data and thats where it got stuck for like an hour.... from the guide i understood that it shouldnt take more than 10 min- 15 min top so i figured that im having a problem, i tuned off the phone by pressing pwr button and turn it back on, then the phone got stuck on the sgs2 screen with the triangle so i turned it off again----> this time it didnt came back on, and not responding to download mode neither to polling battery out or not even by connecting to usb and charger- just dead!
how is it possible? and what should i do to bring it back to life? (and myself)
thank you very much(please help...), and sorry for the long text and the bad english
do you have usb jig with you?
i assume you brick your phone.
read my thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1402286 carefully. anyway, usb jig will not harm your device
No download mode = try jig. Jig doesn't work = JTAG repair by 3rd party repairer (cheaper option) or JTAG repair my Samsung (more expensive option).
thank you,
no dont have one but i ordered from ebay.
is there a chance that my battery died and as a result of the two my phone wont respond?
Possible but highly unlikely. I guess you might as well try a new battery, at worst you'll have a spare when you get the phone repaired.
Fairly common problem go to forum xx download something and follow the instructions dont work go to a totally different forum and ask why ???
CWM 4 very old .
vol-down+pwr+home and hit "backup why ??? thats download mode
My guess would be wrong instructions/firmware .
The other question to ask is it a i9100 or a different version .
jje
i really hope thats the problem, im going to a friend now to try with his battry.
but really how is it possible that my phone is bricked when i didnt even try to flash a new rom, and more than that it happened in the backup process when all the cwm does is a copy operation... so what really had happened?

I should say jog = 50% chances of getting into download mode. JTAG is more like a solution for hard brick(totally unresponsive, bootloader totally mess up, brain system totally corrupted).
Base on my understanding, getting yourself a hard brick is harder than finding a needle in a haystack. If you go through zedomax(galaxys2root.com owner), he mentioned that he flashed all his android device countless time. All he got is just a couple of soft brick. Never a hard brick. Don't waste your money first. Invest on a cheap usb jig which only cost around 2 dollar, compare to JTAG services which cost 50 dollar.
If usb jig doesn't work, try to go for warranty , see whether they charge you or not. If warranty doesn't cover you and cost less than 50 dollar to repair, go for it.
Only go for JTAG if every effort above don't work.
Warning: JTAG is just a service that reinject Samsung firmware into your device. If your phone has hardware failure, I don't think they can help. Unless they provide hardware repair now. If you wanna be sure, email or call them up to see if they provide hardware repair/replace as well, just in case it is a hardware failure cases.

i know its a very rare situation but it happened. I've tried the jig and it didnt work, then i decided to send it back to the store and they told me they have sent it to the manufacturer, now im waiting...

My advice. Get your money back. Yes. I'm serious.
Edit - Or...Go back to stock firmware & see if you have the same problems. If you do, definitely get your money back.
I had a smilliar prob here is what to do
Wipe cache and dalvik and factory reset then Flash stock 2.3.5 gingr bread
After u do that flash ice cream sandwich 4.0.3 lpQ stock
And ur prob will be fixed inshallah
If i helped please press thanks
Very cheap ??? cheap enough to keep as not a phone ???.
My initial guess is its the firmware as said flash stock .
Once flashed check phone has correct IMEI matching under the battery .

As stated above, youve been advised what to do, there is no magic cure.
You must flash it back to un-rooted stock, gb, then ics.
if the phone still doesnt work then you can give samsung a go, check the binary count is at zero, if not reset that to before you turn to samsung, i suspect tho that because the screen is damaged they wont repair it as its probably the owners negligence that its damaged, or if they do, theyll probably charge.
Do you have any phone insurance you could claim on?
either way you must go back to stock to at least see if it resolves it, and dont forget to check the imei.
thanks for all the replies
i'll try to make a video with the phone to show you whats the problem!
I just find out D:
the imei of the back of phone is diferent that the software one..
that could be the problem?
i need to recover my imei?
please respond!

[Q] I9100GSMH no download mode - bricked at all. Black Screen - Solutions?

Hey there,
i really read several topics in the xda-developers forum and tried to help myself. Nothing worked so I'm very grateful for any help of you professionals.
I've got an I9100GSMH which was already flashed with Odin and 2.3.6.
Following (stupid) steps I did:
1) tried to flash I9100XXLPQ - seems to be working but the phone got stuck at the bootloader/samsung logo after flashing
2) after that I tried I9100GXXLPN - but this didn't work anyways.
3) i did a Wipe/Factory Reset in recovery mode and deleted the cache. then I tried I9100GXXLPN - no success
4) now I tried to get back to 2.3.6 with I9100GXXLA1 and used a omap4_all PIT file. The repartitioning worked but not the flash. After that I just pulled out the usb plug, which was kinda stupid.
Now the phone stays fully black and doesn't react to any buttons, no Recovery mode, no Download Mode or anything else.
- What can I do to get back into Download mode? Does this USB jig help/work?
- Which Firmware, PIT, Bootloader, etc. would fit for my phone? (Just working - no matter 2.3.6 or 4.0.1)
Thanks for your help. I really appreciate this.
Greetings
Futuretec
If the phone shows no signs of life, only thing you can do is try a jig which realistically probably has 1% chance of getting you into download mode. Actually, I'm being generous. Probably a lot less than that. But worth a try nonetheless.
So that means you can either have it JTAG'd by a 3rd party repairer or send it into Samsung & hope they either can't tell or don't care that's it's been messed with & they repair it under warranty. Best thing to do would be to send it into Samsung/authorised repairer in the first instance, and if they're going to charge you for the repair (don't bother debating this, btw), ask for a quote. That way you can compare their price to fix it with the cost of a JTAG. Here's a JTAG repairer to give you an idea of what you're probably up for (say $100 USD incl postage to/from ?). I'm sure you'll find others with a Google search, maybe even one close to you.
Edit to add -Actually, given you ended up with bootloop after flashing the I9100 rom in the first instance, it probably wasn't that which killed it. More likely pulling the plug.

My guess would be his flashing of an OMAP .pit on what seems to be an I9100, rather than I9100G (he said I9100GSMH not I9100GGSMH).
Ahhhh yes. You're right ;-) The fine details.

Warranty ain't covering that. Only way you get away with it is if the NAND is so stuffed they can't tell, or if whomever fixes it doesn't care/turns a blind eye.

Hello all,
thanks for your nice respones.
I learned that I have NO G-Version of it.
GT-I9100
Model I9100GSMH
I'm from Germany - anyone now where I can find a professional doing a JTAG "unbrick"? Or do you have other Solutions.
I ordered a USB Jig + Docking station for external battery loader (maybe the battery is low).
Thanks for your help!

Doubtful the jig will work, and battery low isn't the issue.
As mentioned above by oinkylicious, the issue is you flashed an OMAP .pit file meant for an I9100G to an Exynos I9100 phone.
It was probably recoverable yourself up until you did that.
JTAG or Samsung service is your only option at this point. Google for a mobile phone repair shop near you that has JTAG Riff boxes.
Had about the same issue, Odin was stuck in the middle - pulling the plug here was fatal.
USB jig for SGS2 ICS is different, won't help anyway.
Cost me around $120 for a Jtag treat that fixed the flashed data chip

Hi All,
I have a similar issue. Exactly the same phone. But I don't think I've fully bricked it yet.
Under the battery it says Model: GT-i9100, SSN: i9100GSMH
Originally Gingerbread, then I upgraded to 4.03 via official Kies firmware release.
Couple of days ago tried to upgrade to 4.04 using ODIN and got a fail at factoryfs.img. probably used the wrong firmware.
Could still get into download mode at that stage, but can't anymore. I tried to install a couple of different firmware versions of 4.04. I can still get 'added' when I connect to ODIN though.
Can somebody please help me to upgrade to either 4.04 or Jellybean? I'm willing to go fully custom, just don't know how to do it....Can I do it with ODIN? Do i need a new kernel or pit or image or anything?
Thanks heaps, look forward to any help.
Cheers,
Jackson

I bricked my s3? [SHV-E210K]

Hi,
While i was trying to reset flash/binary counter, i click reset counter n after some process, phone switched off.. i waited a little while to reboot but it didn't. then, i switched on by myself but when samsung galaxy logo appears, it died.. i tried many times but couldn't go after that.. then i tried to boot in recovery mode but it also didn't worked. thankfully i could boot in download mode and had root with odin [CMW 6.4] to run recovery mode n it worked. but after rooting my s3, i switched on n see pin code screen.. then, i realized the main issue "my touchscreen is not working" !! i don't know how it happen but phone looks fine, rom is working well but touchscreen is not working.
At first, i boot in recovery mode n wipe all data (factory reset), cache n dalvik cache and with a great hope, restarted my s3 but still had same issue. then, i remember i had a nandroid backup n i boot in recovery mode again. i restored it n restarted. but even i get back my previous settings, touchscreen still doesn't work. i can see wallpaper n then pin code screen but i can't do anything. it doesn't respond my touch n screen goes black. only vol. up/down, home n power buttons working. i guess
don't know to solve this mess. my s3 is a SHV-E210K n i got 4.1.1 JB. There're much people who use this device so that i couldn't find any solution. if somebody can help me to get out from this trouble, gonna be appreciated.
waiting your help guys, thanks in advance.
i think we already have 4 with identical case, all you can do now is to go to samsung service center for warranty, i think the touchscreen panel or digitizer had been damage. check the triangleaway thread in gs2 forum they report their problem and solution there.

my mistake as i did not see where you live, i think not the actual touch panel was damaged but some other electronic parts in panel assembly has been damaged, i also waiting and hoping for possible software fix before i go to service center for warranty. but i think it is possible, do you know the emmc brick problem caused by flashing firmware that is a hardware damaged by software.
other guy with e210k in another thread already went to samsung service center for repair and they replaced the touchscreen.

hi,
today, i get my phone back n didn't repaired cos they offered to change led screen + touch screen n it costs around 400$.. so that, i didn't but there's no way to fix it with a software.. i'm looking for a cheaper solution
do u think they will samsung gonna accept to repair your phone with warranty? cos if they see that u rooted your device, it's out of warranty..
i think you have no other choice then, you can't revive dead electronic parts by software, just take your chance maybe they will not notice it, just tell them that your touchscreen is not functioning. just went to samsung service center this morning for my s3 e210k repair and they replaced my front cover and display assembly to a new one and it is running smoothly again. lucky me my counter is 0 and status is official that why didn't pay any charge.

yeah, you are really lucky n im convinced that i can't revive it with any software. i will send my device to warranty but still couldn't reset my counter. everything is official on odin mode but just counter says yes (9 counts). i connect usb mouse to my device via on the go usb cable n control all functions with mouse. i tried to use triangle away again but when it needs to reboot the device, samsung logo goes dead or goes crazy with different colours. everytime, i install CWM again to get back my device.
pls, someone tell me how to reset counter with triangle away! i created a folder in sdcard directory which named "triangleaway" n put there triangleaway v2.3.6 apk n param.tar then run the application. but it doesn't reboot the device, goes dead. don't know how to use param.tar file. what should i do for a proper reset? i need to reset countern then i will flash official firmware to send my device to warranty.

i think you cannot reset counter now as your touchscreen is not working, you need to use triangleaway apk to reset counter. try your luck if you have usb jig to reset it maybe it will work for you.
i think the best you can do now is to flash stock rom and send it to a/s and pray that they will not check the counter.
Don't try your like. It can be done. Has every one of you forgot that sgs3 supports a wired mouse? Just get a USB adaptor and conect a mouse to your phone. Than you can start triangle away.

No you still have chance of resetting counter as you can use usb otg, dont use triangleaway 2.36 again after flashing stock rom and root instead use triangleaway 2.2 to 2.30 it will work im sure as i use 2.2 without softbrick.

[Q] Galaxy s2 GT-I9100 Complete dead

Dear Forum members i am new to this forum please help me to boot up my Phone :
After rooting using odin i have installed custom rom all working fine later tried to install another using odin selected .PIT file & re partition was checked in the middle Odin stopped responding disconnected the phone & phone stopped as attached image later battery empty. Now its completely dead no light no logo no boot sign tried to enter download mode, recovery mode, connecting to pc using kies, Odin nothing working.
Please help me to get the phone back to working
Thanks in advance
Unfortunately because you played around with the PIT file unless advised means that your phone is bricked.
Since you cannot get into any mode at all, the only method that might work to fix your phone is a Jtag device.

Thanks for quick reply. can you please tell me where Jtag is available in India people who do it?
Thanks in advance.
For the first time i used forum and its really helpfull.
If he's still getting the screen that he posted in his first post, then it does NOT mean it is bricked beyond repair. In fact, you should be able to flash using Odin while that screen is up.
I've only ever seen people get that screen when they either flashed an I9100G ROM or firmware to an I9100, or the reverse. (flashed an I9100 ROM or firmware to an I9100G)
OP, I'd make absolutely sure you are flashing a ROM or firmware that is meant for your model of device.

Oh. Well, if it's completely dead now, and no longer shows that screen, than Cosmic Blue's statement is probably true. JTag it is.
Use Google to try to find a repair shop near you that offers this service. If you can't find one close to you, you'll probably have to mail it off to a shop that does it.

Customer service may not know but if you talk to the technician he will know but may not want to do it as they will not make as much money as replacing the motherboard.
If you check the service manual that are posted on in this forum. one of the steps before replAcing the motherboard is using jig then jtag before you replace MB.
