Quick overview...been running hyperdrive rls7 with some mods and been running nice. All of the sudden today when I got in my car, the verizon charger that always works with my phone says its now incompatible and the battery is not charging. Got home and hooked up to various chargers at different wall sockets...same message. Thought it might be a rom issue but restored to just stock rooted and am getting the same message. When the phone was in recovery (twrp) mode however i could tell it was charging bc it had a "58 +" which means it was charging (also it was at 50 before I restored).
What is going on and is this just the phone not thinking its getting charged, when it really is? I've googled this and have researched a decent amount and most issues of this type are a device issue...not rom specific. I really dont want to get a replacement device that has ME7. Any help would be much appreciated.
Try cleaning the charger port and also see if there is a bent pin in the port.

I'm very careful when plugging my phone in since my wife has bent hers before. The only way that my phone seems to charge is if I revert back to rooted stock and throw the phone into recovery. The phone is recognizing that there is a charger plugged in. It's just saying it's the wrong one. I went to Android Phorums and it looks like several people over there are experiencing the same exact problem. It looks to be some issue with the motherboard. This guy replaced the "usp ribbon" inside the phone and that seemd to fix it...? Dont really want to open up my phone, but looks as though I might have to unless I want to restore stock rom and charge in recovery every night and then restore hyperdrive in the morning when I wake up (this is what i'm doing today at least)....
http://forums.androidcentral.com/ro...sung-galaxy-s4-not-charging-grey-battery.html
Link above goes to another android forum that shoes exactly what is going on with my phone, but the one fix that is within means me taking the phone apart which isn't something I necessarily want to do...please help...anyone...tried cleaning out the port on phone, but the device is rather new, so not much to clean.
Also, just tried letting the phone charge with the phone off, along with the gray battery screen and the vibration every 10 seconds on the way to work and it actually charged up by 4%, so it seems the battery is chargable, just not while the phone is on. Something is def wrong here, but all is not lost. Any other fix known to anyone other than taking my phone apart and replacing the "USB ribbon"?
Also, when connecting to a windows computer, the phone is not recognized...there is a usb connection in the status bar for just a second and then it goes away. Believe this is all hardware related, but dont want to trade or get replacement device since I dont want to be locked down.
Yikes! I sure hope this is limited. Sorry to hear about you (& others) having this though.
You may want to consider purchasing a couple of extra batteries and an external charger. Anker brand batteries on Amazon are reported to be as good as the oem battery. You can get 2 batteries plus an external charger for $23. Beware of cheap oem batteries. They are often counterfeits from China that are not very good.
Sorry to hear that your problem is most likely a hardware problem. Some people are comfortable taking their phone apart and some are not. You will need to decide for yourself if you think it is worth the risk. I hope everything works out for the best for you.

Yeah...that's what I was thinking aout regarding an external charger. The good news is, is that this phone has pretty good battery usage. Just not what I expected from a $500 piece of electronics after 2 months of use. Thanks for the Amazon info!
I prefer an external charger anyway. The phone does not get hot while the battery is charging.

I believe the next to last line in the op answers your question. Chances are the update to ME7 would be installed by the techs. There is also the fact that it can take a while. I sent a phone to Samsung for warranty work last year and it took 4 weeks to get it back.

OK, so all of the sudden yesterday my phone started charging normally and connected to my computer as well. Basically, I think there was something wrong with my charging port, which has since fixed itself. Called a local service center and they mentioned that samsung ports go out all the time. If this happens to anyone else, not all S4 ports are the same...make sure you get the one for the Verizon GS4...

Anyone have any tips for a Note not charging? Tried a few cables. It is rooted and has a custom ROM, so I feel like I am stuck between a rock and a hard place.
Anyone have any experience with this that maybe could point me in the direction of how to get my phone back to working normally?
Flash back to stock?
Does it still connect to your computer? If it's not charging & not connecting, your charging port is probably broken. You could probably manage with an external battery charger & a couple of batteries you can charge & rotate, like these-
Try blowing the port out with compressed air? Otherwise, yeah, you're looking at a replacement phone.

Same thing happened to a 'friend'. That part is very easy to change out. I don't know if you can buy it by itself though. What I 'heard' you can do is buy a new note from BB switch the charging ports and return it. Just make sure the battery is charged when u return it.

But I do need to flash back to stock first, right?
I flashed a stock rooted rom and they were cool with that. But it would depend on the person. Does the port work if you hold it in a certain position?

Yeah. I tried around 3 or 4 chargers (car, oem, etc.), and none worked. I got home last night... Plugged it into my computer with a cable I had left at my computer, and it was charged in the morning.
Maybe I can give it some more time to make sure it wasn't something just disrupting the pin connections.

The exact same thing happened to me. My Note stopped charging completely. As previously stated, you can get an external battery charger but your best bet might be a replacement phone.
From what I was told by a local phone repair shop, its not an easy fix. I'm not sure how correct that is.
However, AT&T replaced mine and it was quite an easy process.

My phone just stopped charging. Luckily, it has 50% charge left, and I have a backup iPhone. Has anyone else experienced this problem and had their phone successfully replaced?
If so, did you go through AT&T or Samsung? If I go into an AT&T store, will they be able to give me a replacement right there? If not, will they at least be able to start the repair process?

I claimed a warranty exchange. Went to AT&T and they gave me the warranty number. I don't think I've ever had a phone swapped in-store even though I have insurance.

That's a good short term fix, but it's inconvenient and by the time you get that wall charger you'll have a new phone via warranty exchange.
I have a OEM charging cradle and battery I got on shopandroid for cheap. It was well worth it.

I have the same problem with my 3 month old note (At&t i717). No pressure pull or anything was done to the phones USB port in fact it happened in the middle of the night while charging, it just stopped charging on its own. It's stock rom never rooted 2.3.6. Picked up the phone this morning was about 50% i didnt pay too much attention, got in the car and plugged in and noticed it is not charging. I thought its my trusty Chinese charger but it was not, came back home tried home charger the laptop plus USB cable and non worked. I am using original home charger and samsung USB cable. Cleaning the port did nothing. Rebooting few times and pulling the battery out did not help either.
And then the strangest thing happened. While it was plugged in (without me even touching it) after 20 minutes of being plugged in suddenly it made its DING sound and started charging. It has been charging everywhere since then, that was a few hours ago. I am worried it may do this again. It is definitely a software issue to me. I didn't touch the phone and started recharging all on its own!
I bought this note off Craigslist and its only about 3 months old and still under warranty but I don't have the receipt so Samsung says f/u. Very pissed at Samsungs poor customer service, really rude people in the Philippines at customer service, when I told them I bought the phone on Craigslist used, they acted like I have stolen their family jewels and did not want to talk to me. They came up with lame BS excuses like warranty doesn't transfer to second owner (it does, it's mandatory in the USA magnuson moss act ). HTC in contrast has always services my used phones without receipt using the IMEI they check and know it's still under warranty. They place a temporary charge on the card but they have never charged me anything and have promptly repaired my phones multiple times over the past couple of years.
I've replaced my phone twice under a try warranty. It was super easy and the second time they sent me a brand new device. Also have your charger replaced as well, it a warranty issue also.

My phone charges but it seems to be thinking it's always charging even when unplugged. I use it to play music at the bar I work at & it kept going in car docking mode which I never use. My battery was almost dead but it fully charged after the night was done. I went to change the battery to see if that was the problem and when I turned it off the battery charging image came up while it was off with nothing plugged in. Now my battery status keeps flashing & changes from regular size to mini size. Has anyone ever experienced this?

Searching goes a long way here my friend. This is a common problem for a lot of people. (I've never experienced it, but many others have). The solution seems to have been cleaning out the mini usb port on the phone with some 91% isopropyl rubbing alcohol and a que tip. Or if that doesn't work it may be a bad usb port.

I don't know what kind of Que tips you use but the ones I have don't fit. I used tissue folded over and it's still screwy. I think something's loose in the or something because sometimes shaking it makes it stop for a bit. If I get a new usb port from e bay will the one for the i9100 work in mine?

I guess I'm in the same boat with you. Noticed a couple of days ago the phone stopped making the little chime when you connect/disconnect the charger. Yesterday I took it off the charger and after a couple hours it was down to 40% without me using it. Today, I swapped batteries and had the same problem with the battery icon. One second it shows about 3/4 full, the next it says 100%. Then I couldn't get it to boot, just kept cycling through the battery icon. Got it booted and not only does it say charging when not connected, the USB icon is in the Stat bar saying it is MTP-connected. Guess it is time for warranty.:crying:

Sky rocket yes. I wouldn't say the one x is a downgrade necessarily
At this point I might be ready to get away from Samsung. My SI had to be replaced 3 times. The S2 has had some weird issues, but worked until this started 2 days ago. I had an HTC before (WinMo) that is still working fine today. Maybe I'll have better luck with the 1X seeing how apparently Samsung can't make phones that last.
I got an S2 as a replacement. Not a Skyrocket, so it depends on when you call. Otherwise all they would offer me was the skyrocket or 2 windows phones.

What do you think would be easier, getting the part & fixing it myself or using Odin with a tricky usb port to revert back to stock? I also lost my att splash screen by using that gs2 boot screen changing app. I got rid of the app a while back & have used a couple different roms but it seems permanent.

I think the problem is actually in the logic board and not just the connector. Even if you fix it the problem will likely reoccur in time. I don't want my phone repaired, even by AT$T, just to have it fail again, but out of warranty next time. I had to have my Captivate replaced 3 times. Maybe it's time to go back to HTC. It sucks, because I love this phone.

Mine started happening after I spilt water on the end of the charging cable and didn't let it dry off completely before plugging it in. Do you still think it would be in the logic board? Then again, it seems like more and more people are getting this problem. And of course, it's just as the warranty is expiring on these phones.

If it's a physical problem with hardware, no software changes can fix it.

Mine had nothing to do with water. I just think the micro USB connector is a poor design for something that has to be plugged and unplugged as often as a smartphone does and in the kind of environment we use them, especially in the car. The logic board is what the connector mounts to. It takes the signals from the connector and relays that information to determine whether the connection is for charging, PC connection or some other I/O function. Over time the process of disconnecting/connecting will weaken the solder joints and/or cause the thin traces in the ribbon cable to possibly short against each other and create the issues we are seeing. That's why the problems can be seen even after the cable is unplugged. Replacing just the connector will likely not solve the problem.
Talked to support. They are sending me another SII (refurbished). They wanted me to do a factory reset and download an update as part of their troubleshooting. I insisted that no software update would fix a hardware problem. *****ed enough to get them to drop it and send me another phone. My phone is rooted stock 2.3.4. Do you lose root with a reset? If I send it in rooted will that cause me trouble with the warranty dept. even though it isn't relevant to what is wrong with the phone?

Nick says they don't check. I dunno. All I know is if they can prove you messed with the phone and voided your warranty you'll get a bill for 400$
I have owned the phone for just over two weeks and recently it started doing this thing where it does not charge properly when the oem charger or any other samsung use chargers that I own are inserted.
Sometimes re-inserting the charger a bunch of times gets it going. Sometimes you insert the charger and it starts going, then flip flops back and forth between charging and not charging.
The first time this happened I had to let it die completely before it would take a charge.
This is extremely frustrating. Does anyone have any advice? Is this a software or hardware issue? I have cleaned out both the cords and the ports and I don't belive I would have damaged them in any way. Any advice would help.
Thank you.

If you jiggle the cable around, is there any sweet spot where it charges properly? My Thunderbolt does this too, and I found with mine if you force the cable towards one side it will always work.
I've had this happen to mine a few times as well. Would just stick somewhere and doesn't want to charge anymore. I saw a possible fix for it somewhere online, I believe they were talking about the S2 not charging, and he did some combination of pulling the battery out, plugging it in, then putting the battery back in and turning it on. I can't remember exactly but you might search it and see if you can find it. It fixed it for a lot of people, but it seems to be intermittent, and more than anything I've attributed it to the cord. It doesn't sit very well, and one of the times it happened, the plug wasn't all the way into the wall. I actually just had it happen this morning where I was stuck at 95 percent, and I just rebooted and now it's going back up again.
I also have issues where the screen goes black (SOD) and won't come back on without a battery pull. Again, very intermittent and I'm trying to pinpoint the cause, because it happened more often when I was on 240 DPI, and when I was messing with the kernel cpu. I'm actually underclocked now on Perseus to 1.3 on the 5g profile, and running smoothly ever since(2 full days of same setup and no issues)
The other variables I've noticed when I get the SOD, is it's usually when my battery is lower, and I might still have radios on, such as Bluetooth, but nothing paired.
Sent from my unlocked & underclocked Note 2
Yeah I think it might have something to do with the female end on the phone being so recessed from the plastic housing. Either way this is annoying me and I don't want my phone acting like this even if it is intermittent. I will start looking into a warranty replacement.
I bought the phone off contract, does anyone know if the return policy for an off contract phone is any different than the typical Verizon 14 days?

I dropped my phone a while back and smashed the screen. I replaced it myself and, to make a long story short, now it won't charge via USB. It says the battery's running at 80°c and it won't charge. However I can touch the battery at this point and it is cool to the touch. What I want is a build.prop setting to turn off the battery temperature sensor or something similar. Can someone tell me how to do that?
Everything else seems to be working fine.

So far I haven't found a cell phone repair shop that will try to fix my phone. One guy tried to replace the USB port, which didn't work. Another guy said he thought it is the Power IC. I guess that kinda fits since the phone speaker sounds all distorted with low volume too. It sounds like a wireless microphone with a dying battery.
I watched a few videos of Power IC's being changed. They made it look pretty easy. It requires a soldering blow gun that probably only a real electrician would have though. Wish me luck with finding a cell phone repair man with real electronic skills. There seem to be quite a few phone fix-it shops in my area. Surely someone can do it.
Or maybe it's something else. Anyway it looks like it's going to take a pretty sharp repair man to fix it.

Thanks for the reply. I have a spare battery and a cheap external charger. The charger is too wimpy for a GN2 battery though. If I can't get it fixed I'Il have to get a better one.
The thing that really sucks about this is I can't use it on my car dock. I love using it like that and it's tearing me up that I can't now. When my wife is with me we can use her GS3 but when I'm alone I like to crank my tunes and use my traffic app. Not to mention charging the battery. This phone has got to get fixed. I keep finding this going on. A few times now I've noticed my phone discharging fast. I check with Better Battery Stats and find that that I've had "USB CB Wake Lock" going on for hours. I'm not sure but I think it starts while being charged during the night. A reboot shuts it off.
I'm not sure how to catch a log cat of this. Could I start the log when I notice it or would it need to be on when it starts? Or maybe someone out there already knows what's going on with it?
I googled it and found someone who said they needed to replace their USB port. I kinda wonder if I might have an issue with mine. I use it on my car dock almost every time I drive. The cable on my dock is fairly hard to plug in. It doesn't just line up correctly and I have to jiggle it around a little to plug it in. The reason I got this dock is because I can mount my big phone with an Otterbox case on it.
The thing is the wake lock seems to start up while it's on the stock phone charger rather than the car dock.
Maybe it's software related. I use Tweaked VZW Remix I had the PB&J Kernel til yesterday afternoon when I switched back to stock. But this morning I found the wake lock with the stock kernel.
I'd just start up a logcat but if I have to leave it on overnight it'll wind up being huge. I don't know what to do here. Anybody got any ideas?

Saw your post on tweaked thread... Been a while, but I think couple of things to try are... turn phone on before unplugging, try cleaning usb port with toothbrush and/or compressed air (pull battery before doing this). Last resort, replace usb... think it is only around $20? There are videos on how to do this. Not that hard if you're technically inclined at all.
Ok I tried cleaning out the USB port. We'll see. I do have a problem with metal shavings at work and once in a while I find that I've left the USB flap on my Otterbox open. I guess I need to be more careful. I hope that takes care of it. It seems to me like if it was a hardware thing rebooting wouldn't necessarily fix it. But I guess it could.

I found one called USBStorageUnmountter. It's the closest thing to USB CB Wakelock I could find. Is that it?

Well so far so good. Thanks man.
Here's what I have this morning. I found some info that said this happens while charging. That's about how long it was on the charger last night. I guess as long as it's charging while this wakelock is activated it's ok. The reason I've been concerned is I found this reading 1 day & 19 hours once. Maybe it's not a big deal. I'm gonna keep an eye on it. My phone doesn't seem to be discharging fast today.

Ok it's pretty obvious this wakelock is what it does while charging. This morning it added 7 hours to the 7 from yesterday and it shows 14 now. I guess the time it showed all those hours it hadn't been rebooted for a week. There must be another reason for the occasional fast discharge. I guess I need to keep watching this. It's probably about bad signals. It's a good thing we have Better Battery Stats. It's definitely worthwhile.
