[Q] Can't get USB-OTG to work on MB860? - Atrix 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello! I'm using an Atrix MB860 with CM7-MROM, rooted and unlocked. I have a USB-female to micro-b-male USB-OTG cable (yes it is an OTG cable with pins 5 and 4 shorted or whatever), a powered USB hub where the red +5v line is coming from a 5v, 600mA power supply, not the usb cable, and 3 different USB OTG host controller apps.
My powered USB hub works just fine on both of my computers, so I know that its not the issue. But I can't get my Atrix, or at least the USB OTG apps I've tried, to recognize any device I plug into the hub, or even straight into the cable. I've tried 2 different wired keyboards, a wireless keyboard/mouse, an xbox 360 wireless controller receiver, and 4 different USB flash drives, and NOTHING works on the Atrix (but they all work on my PC through the same hub). I have tried restarting the USB OTG apps, I've tried pressing the 'refresh' button in them, I've tried restarting the entire phone with the USB OTG cable plugged in on bootup, but nothing works!
What am I doing wrong?! I know this phone supports USB OTG, I've seen videos of it working on youtube.
EDIT - Okay, my powered hub + otg cable combo is confirmed working just fine on my friend's Motorola Xoom tablet running stock Android 4.whatever firmware. It recognizes both my keyboard and my flash drive plugged into the hub, at the same time. But when I unplug it from the tablet and plug it into my Atrix phone, so that the keyboard/flash drive are plugged into the EXACT SAME ports on the hub, my Motorola Atrix does not recognize them at all.
What. The. Hell.

i dont think atrix does OTG. sorry mate.

Whaaat? But there's numerous threads in here about people getting it to work just fine on the Atrix!
Also, there's videos like this on youtube of it working fine on an MB860:

I think it only works on blur gb. You need nebtop.apk, so you can simulate docking the phone. That should enable otg with your powered hub

Wiki made it sound like the USB host feature that is available in ICS, flash drives, keyboards, mouse and such..
its a cool feature that allows a usb-phone connectivity. in simple we may plug and use pendrive, ext hdd with our phone, and access the files in those drives.....

Short answer.. Yes
Lapdock and hd hubs have usb ports already configured.
You can also make your own adapter by purchasing a usb otg cable and modifying a generic usb hub. The otg protocol needs to have 5v returned from the hub to the phone.
There are a couple of forum posts related to that.

that's of course possible ; atrix is a great gadget and capable of many things .
here we go:
1. first get a USB OTG adaptor cable.
2. make your 5v electric-powered USB hub ready.
3. make your USB cable ready (usually USB hub is good for mini USB cable; therefore, you need to obtain also micro to mini USB adaptor too.)
everything is ready now.
4. connect USB hub to power.
5. connect your USB cable to USB hub.
6. connect your USB OTG to your atrix.
you are all set-up.
here we continue...
connect your keyborad, mouse, usb flash, etc. to the USB hub. Voilaaaaaa mouse cursor and the keyboard as well as the usb flash are all visible on Atrix.
Have fun and enjoy it...
In case you wish, search for youtube for "Atrix OTG support"; you will come across many vidoes that verify what I just briefed above..
on top of all, get a neptop.apk and connect to the HD TV via HDMI cable and taste the ultimate pleasure of WEBTOP

Yeppppp, u r right about the clicks.
I am not sure at the moment nor can I verify where I see the USB as I am not at my home desk now, but if I am not mistaken it presents itself or you may find it under "files". Should you have not stock "files" app, then refer to "usbdisk..." folders under "mnt".
My regards,
Till yesterday there was a schematic, where did it go? :S

is this necessary to use usb hub cant we directly connect 1 tb hd via otg cable?? I searched the whole internet but cant find any guide reagarding atrix otg... Is otg working on atrix cm7??
WOW!
I just got it working in a Custom Blur-based Rom ([ROM][GB] NOTTACHTRIX 4G (v1.9.0) Updated Mar 11 2013).
I used a Power charger connected to a Innobo (average quality) USB hub. Then I connected a mouse and a USB memory to the hub plus the Atrix (via OTG cable).
The phone recognized the USB memory without any problem and the mouse works really fine.
I have´n´t tried a keyboard yet, but I guess It will work as well.
Regards. :good:

[Q] Nebtop

Hi!
Can i use usb mouse or keyboard with my razr via usb otg without dock?
I guess you should be able to since you can use USB drives on the OTG, and since the lapdock contains a USB keyboard with mouse the drivers should be in the phone.
I've successfully used a BT keyboard and mouse with nebtop, but that's different.
Good luck, and let us know how it goes.
I'll post again to this thread if i ever get myself one of those OTG cables as I'm eager to try
You should be able to do the OTG Hack, i.e. OTG Cable-> Power Y Cable -> Hub (With power plugged in on the y cable) I've Used a mouse/Keyboard/Card Reader and thumb drives this way. But there will be some power drain. The phone says it's charging but it does seem to lose some charge. I may just need a charge adapter that has more current.
There are YouTube videos on bow to get USB otg working on motorola phones, webtop or not.

Flash drive on USB hub not working.

Hi there.
I got my Galaxy S3 about 3 days ago and love almost everything about it.
I've been experimenting heavily with USB OTG, and it's such a great feature to have. I have got a Mouse, keyboard and USB flash drive all working over the USB OTG cable. I can also get the Mouse and Keyboard connected at the same time over a USB hub. However, USB flash drives refuse to work over a hub on USB OTG, even though they work directly from the phone to the USB. This is pretty confusing to me, considering two higher power devices work over the hub.
I've tried two different varieties of hub, both giving the same result and have also tried two flash drives. I'm using an un-powered hub and I honestly don't see how just because I'm using a hub the USB Flash drive isn't working. There is no way that it can have a higher power usage than a mouse/keyboard at the same time.
Just to note, I'm using the hub unpowered externally, it's going directly into the phone. I can't seem to find the power cable to try.
I have the UK (GSM) variant of the phone in blue and am running on the Stock 4.0.4 ICS firmware (i9300XXLF2) and haven't tried to root or anything.
Could someone suggest what might be the issue I'm having, or some things to try?
Thanks

[Q] OTG with external power/USB hub

I'm looking to be able to use my external HDD (1TB WD passport) on my phone via OTG. As I understand, ntfs support varies with kernels etc but I'll cross that bridge when I come to it as I think there's a more fundamental problem.
I've got an OTG cable, and my mouse, usb pen drive, keyboard etc work with it. The HDD doesn't, because the phone can't provide enough power to operate the thing. I thought I could get around this by connecting it via my usb hub (which runs off external mains power) but when I connected this up to the phone and plugged the HDD in nothing happened. Likewise, the mouse and pen drive etc could also not be recognised by the phone when they were each plugged in via the hub (one at a time, I wasn't trying to run 8 things at once!) even though they worked perfectly when the phone itself was powering them when they were directly plugged into the OTG cable (if that makes any sense).
So, assuming it was a problem with the hub, I instead tried the method in this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1828032 and made my own y type cable so that now rather than the phone providing power to the OTG peripheral, the power now comes from a standard USB phone charger. I'm fairly confident that I did all the soldering correctly and there weren't any short circuits.
When I tried using this, I had the same issue as with the hub. None of the mouse, the pen drive etc could be recognised with the modified OTG cable, which was odd as physically nothing had changed from the point of view of the peripheral plugged into the OTG (the data cables connecting it to the phone were unchanged, and it was still getting 5V power, just from the wall rather than my phone) which makes me think perhaps the problem is a software one where the phone only recognises a USB peripheral/begins USB host mode if the peripheral is actually draining power, since the power leads running from the phone side of the OTG cable are now just an open circuit.
Just to confirm I hadn't just snipped a data cable by accident when modifying the OTG cable, I re-soldered the OTG cable to how it originally was and it worked the same way it had previously. This means all the data cables are still intact, so I think it must be a software issue.
I thought maybe a way of testing this would be to modify the y cable and connect the red and black power cables coming out of the phone to each other via a fairly hefty resistor (so you still get power flowing from the phone even though the USB peripheral is powered by the wall). But it seems a bit dangerous!
Has anyone else had trouble with this? I've read around on forums and for a lot of people USB hubs and y type OTG cables seem to "just work", although I've not seen anyone with an i9300 reporting success. I'm running the latest version of liquidsmooth, but have also tested on CM10.1 and have the same problem. It might be an AOSP thing that stock samsung firmware will fix?
Let me know your experiences!
TLDR: I'm pretty sure I've got a software issue where my i9300 only recognises a USB peripheral/begins USB host mode via OTG if the peripheral is actually draining the phone's power, and so doesn't work when a USB hub or externally powered (y type) OTG cable is being used.
Thank you!
It apparently only supports 500GB regardless of power source

Really? That's odd - is that an android limitation or samsung? Either way it still seems weird that my y cable/hub didn't work for the mouse/keyboard, is that something you'd expect?
Sorry I didn't read that part.
I have a portable passive hub. Kb and mouse working fine...

USB OTG device connection issue H831

HI all,
My device is a LG G5 H831. I'm trying to connect usb devices Dualshock 4 and a Monster Digital overdrive advanced 128 gb drive) to my phone via usb otg. i have tried with 2 separate cables with no luck. This is one of the cables I used https://www.amazon.ca/CableCreation...5&sr=8-3&keywords=micro+usb+to+usb+type+c+otg
The other is a micro to micro cable that came with the phone clip for my DS4 using an anker adapter to usb c on it. This cable works with both my controller and my 128gb drive using my Samsung Galaxy Tab 4 8 inch tablet with zero issue, however my g5 will not even recognize something is plugged in.
Ive tried searching with no luck, and ive tried 6 OTG diagnostic apps and nothing detects any devices. I can still charge my phone via the usb port and connect it to a computer to transfer files.
I also keep getting USB "power supply" notifications when nothing is plugged in to my usb port on my g5. do you think these issues could be related?
