I'm at a loss - T-Mobile HTC One (M7)

I switched over to T-Mobile last week. Picked up an HTC One and absolutely love the phone. Except for one thing. No matter what I do, I cannot get any device to connect to it's hot spot. I am on my second phone and this phone has the same issue. I also just got off the phone with T-Mobile support and was told I was speaking with their highest level of Tech Support. Ultimately the guy said you have already trouble shooted everything I would have you do so I'm not sure what else to do.
Here is exactly what is happening. I get one of two errors.
Error 1 - Authentication Error
Error 2 - Signal is too weak to connect to network. However, my phone is testing at 9mbps on speedtest
The other odd thing is that I just tried to dload a 28mb app and it took 47min via the play store even though I tested at 9mbps.
Any suggestions?
I have now tried to connect 5 devices, unsuccessfully.

It would be helpful to know what kind of troubleshooting you've already worked through. Without knowing that, I'll suggest the first thing that comes to mind.
For the authentication error, have you tried completely clearing and re-typing the SSID and WPA key in the One's Hotspot Config screen? Perhaps there's an extra space or something at the end of the network name or password that isn't visible. I've done that myself a time or two. Then delete the network association on the other devices and try to re-join them.
As for the 9mb download speed, that's actually pretty good for HSPA, though a bit slow for LTE. I usually get 7-9mbps on HSPA and about 20-25mbps on LTE.

I'm In a "4G" market, not LTE so that's why the speeds are as they are. And yes, I have renamed the network several times. I've tried it on WPA2, WPA, WEP and also no security. I've changed the password too.
I also tried to connect via bluetooth. I was really surprised that the T-Mobile "highest level of support had no further suggestions".

In the Hotspot settings, at the bottom there's a Manage Users, tap on it and check if you have Allowed Users Only selected.

Yes I have done that... I've tried it both ways. I've even changed the password and the name of the network. I have also noticed that my notification bar icon will turn pink and say "connected" even though the other device is not connected.

If you have root then try using a third party app like "wifi tether"

What does the data plan say you have used so far?

Issue resolved... Not sure which one worked but I did 2 things. First I "reset" the hotshot app. Second I used my IMEI as my password and suddenly it works flawlessly.

Airave Connectivity

I am unable to connect my eVOLTe to my Airave access point. All the other phones in the house (two Pixis, a Pre, an OG EVO, and a Hero) are able to connect flawlessly and go from one bar to full in the process. However, my new eVOLTe flickers on one bar, occasionally dropping to VZW roaming. This is the case even if none of the other phones are present in the house, and I have never enabled any of the restricted phone settings on the Airave.
I was wondering if anyone had experienced similar issues, and if so, if they had found a solution.

Don't know if this will work because I'm away from home and can't confirm. In the mobile network settings is a setting to turn lte off, cdma only mode. My guess is the cdma/lte mode is what's causing the issue.

Airave allows 5 devices at one time. Try connecting to it without one of the other devices using it.

I've been having issues as well, my issues are with sms. I keep getting the same messages over and over from people and I'm unable to send any. I just unplugged it before I saw your suggestion to change the phone to CDMA only. I switched it and I'm waiting for the Airave to connect. We'll see if it helps.
Edit: Airave is back up and everything seems to be working fine. Thanks for the tip.

I had the same problem... Was in phone with customer service for almost 2 hours... Then I asked about my airrave and they said reset it... And it fixed it right away.. then they gave me a 25 dollar credit for spending almost 2 hours on the phone.

I had an issue like this when I first got my EVO LTE a few days ago. At first I couldn't connect and then it would let me make phone calls but all text messages would appear as if they failed and even if I retried sending 20 times they would fail. I personally think it was my old phone (OG EVO 4G) causing a problem as it was still on and my EVO LTE would never connect to my Airave! I played with it for over an hour trying to get it to work but then I thought of turning my old phone off and then resetting/unplugging the Airave and when it came back online my new EVO LTE connected without issue and I haven't had a problem since! See if that works for you?

If your phone is not yet activated, DO NOT activate it with an airrave present. For some reason, the OTA activation doesn't work right unless you're connected to a real tower.
FWIW, also try changing your Roaming to "Sprint Only", and also, update your PRL.
Mine finally connected when I did that as well as changing from LTE/CDMA to CDMA only.
turned off inactive phone and it texts again

good tip!! thanks so much for the help

At my wit's end... do any of these phones actually work?

So I've had my new EVO 4G LTE all of about two weeks and have had nothing but troubles with it. I'm currently on the 5th phone (replaced 4 times since the first) and its still got the same wifi / 3g issues that caused me to replace it twice which have both the wifi and the 3g disconnecting for no reason whatsoever and when the 3g works, I get speeds slower than the oldest 14.4k modems unless I'm within about 100 yards of a cell tower. The other two times I had to exchange it because there was dust under the phone's screen.
Because of the connectivity issues, the phone is almost useless to me unless I don't plan on using data at all, or if I'm sitting by a wifi router and don't plan on using that connection for more than 10 minutes continuously. I've tried the 2.4GHz fix, the turning off LTE fix, and even given it a static IP at home.. all without any change in performance. I'm really at my wit's end and would have already exchanged it for a 6th phone if I thought there would be a reasonable expectation that the new one would work correctly.
Is there any other fixes out there that I have yet to try? Do any of the rooted OS's have a newer / better modem that will fix my problem? Should I just return the thing again and switch to a different manufacturer? I chose to get the Evo rather than wait for the Galaxy S3 because I never liked my old Epic, but I'm starting to think that this was a massive mistake...
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Are you sure your router isn't acting up? And where you live might be a testing area for LTE? That would cause network issues.
The last thing is-have you removed your back cover to install am SD Card? That cover needs to be on securely as I believe that is the antenna

Oh, I assume you have done PRL update and profile updates? There are 2 ways to do that. Settings/Updates/PRL and Profile.
Also dial *2 and you can do PRL and Profile updates there you. The *2 also runs a data and voice test, you will see green, or red, check marks.

I haven't had any problems. I actually receive awesome 3g service (not so much indoors) the EVO connects to my wireless N router flawlessly. I think your automatic disconnection issues is due to htcsmartsync. It's designed to shut off services (like airplane mode) in order to keep the phone in a deep sleep.
I would suggest rooting your phone and deleting the code from your phone. Can work wonders ?
I wouldnt suggest unlocking your bootloader to flash Roms though..reason being, if htcsync isnt the culprit. I don't want you to have a tampered phone and not being able to return it....goodluck. ill post links in a bit

I feel your pain, I have two and both have similar issues. I have tried different roms and get the same issues. My EVO 3D was faster than this phone and I think it may be do to some issue in the firmware. I am just riding it out. I personally am surprised more users have not come forward. My biggest complaint is the lag on the device. I can flash a clean rom install, or flash over an existing base and it is faster, but then lags out and is dreadfully slow after just a few hours.
What type of encryption are you using on the router tkip, aes, wep? Is it wireless n or g?
Plenty of these phones work. My WiFi and 3G work flawlessly, and I haven't had to exchange once.
I was having similar issues with my 3G randomly dropping out, but never any problem with my wifi. I updated profile and PRL last week, flashed a ROM with SmartSync disabled, and haven't had a problem since.

3G speeds and coverage are awesome around my work, on the way to work and at home. Also the WiFi is faster than my darn desktop, with the wireless N.

I'm fairly sure it isn't the router since the phone is behaving the same way on my school's wifi and the one at the starbucks near my house. Also, I have other devices connected to my router at the same time as the Evo and none of them are experiencing the same issues.
I am willing to accept that there is a possibility the some or all of my 3G issues are related to the network upgrade, but I'm experiencing the extremely slow speeds over most of the city of Denver, and I'm guessing it would be unlikely that they would be upgrading 75% of the towers in the city at the same time. It also doesn't really explain the 3G service just shutting off randomly and then popping back on a few seconds later. That all being said, even if it is network issues, it just serves to highlight the lack of a reliable wifi connection.
As far as the back panel is concerned, I did install a micro-sd card there, and, since reading your post, I have removed it, blown off and dust / debris that might have gotten in there, and reseated it as snugly as possible. This didn't generate any sort of fix for the 3G issues, though I've not had a chance to test if wifi is working any better now. I did notice however that some of the gold filaments were discolored, so perhaps there is a manufacturing defect, though I'm not sure how the color of the filament could affect its conductivity.

I have done about 7 PRL / profile updates on this particular phone. I have also done a couple factory data hard resets through the boot screen in the hopes that it was just "glitching". Though the resets seemed to help, the effect didn't last, and none of the PRL / profile updates did anything to improve performance.
I did have a look at the *2 screen you mentioned and found that both voice and data had green checks by them, but I think this is only a check to determine if the connection exists at all and has nothing to do with quality. I do remember hearing about another testing screen you can get to through the dialer by pressing a sequence of characters which gives you access to a much more in-depth set of tests, but searching hasn't produced anything on that, at least with my search terms. That being said, I took a previous phone with the same issues into the sprint store and they told me it passed all of their diagnostic tests, so I'm not sure it would tell me anything different.

Sounds like an interesting possibility, though my wifi / 3g turn off while in direct, phone is awake and I'm using the program thats using the connection, use. I'll have to read about htcsync to see if its able to shut down connection while in use. While I'm not opposed to rooting my phone (I've resisted the urge to do it now because I really don't want to have troubles with returning it), I really don't like the idea that I might not be able to fix this problem without doing it...

Luckily, mine doesn't seem to suffer from lag at all, just a really horrible connection. From what I've heard at best buy and sprint though, a huge number of people are having similar issues with this phone. The people at best buy even went so far as to try and tell me this was a "known issue" and therefore wouldn't be exchanging it again (this was the third time), to which I had to reply that I would then like a full refund and would be taking my business elsewhere. The way I see it, if a phone has a known issue, but not all of the phones are affected by it, you have to keep replacing it until I get one without the issue.

I've thought about that possibility for sure, but the slow speeds and intermittent connections for 3g and wifi go, and have gone for all of the devices with this problem (don't forget, two of them were returned because they had dust under the phone's screen), all over the city with me, so, unless I'm a walking cell disrupter, then I think the issue lies somewhere in the phone.

1st thing....I havent checked but isn't the smith.apk still included? 2ndly I had issues with this phone dropping secured connections from afar and found it to be interference witht he witless signal so try changing your frequency....that solved my issues....no lags here. From what I can tell, and I may be wrong on this of course, smith.apk is a logger and not a throttler as people initially thought. Its something I'd probably ensure was removed from any custom OS I install, but its apparently not something that would affect connections at all. That being said, I'm curious just how this "Mobile Network Director" is supposed to know when I need my data connection, but that seems to be on the network side and not on the phone.
I'll have to check into the frequency thing. I remember a long time ago I had to mess with my previous router's channel because it was interfering with my wireless mouse for some reason, but I've not had any similar problems with the new router in the last four years, until now potentially I guess.
As for the 3G turning off when possible to save battery or network bandwidth, I can understand that concept, but it would have to be very broken to shut off any network with a good signal while its actually in use.

I thought it was smith but maybe its the other thing you mentioned but they recently started adding that software to dump people from 3g to 1x to avoid congestion and it was actually installed on the phone itself. I had no issues with WiFi until the ICS stuff started coming out....I had the issue on the 3D and the LTE....the 2 phones didn't seem to like dual encryption especially from afar so I changed the encryption still had issues except for open then I tried changing the channel and that held.

A lot of misconceptions about that smith apk here.....
Sent from my EVO using xda premium
I saw in another thread that you had your Epic replaced 5 times in 2 years. Now you are on your 5th Evo? So you have basically had 10 phones in the past 2 years? Have the last EVOs beet rooted at all, or are they completely untouched as far as things like the build.prop goes? Could there be a particular app that you are installing on all those phones that could be causing your issue? If you truly have had 10 bad phones in the past 2 years, then do not buy any lottery tickets!
My Evo doesn't drop Wifi at all. It does drop 3G, but only when I am in an area where I get one bar. Make sure Best Wi-fi performance is unchecked in the Advanced Wi-Fi settings, and in Wi-Fi frequency Band, try changing it to 2.4 only.

Mobile data "Disconnected"

This is new. My phone shows full signal bars, but data does not work (no LTE displayed in the status bar). When I look at the settings it says "Disconnected" right below Mobile data. If I turn it off and on, it will say "Turning On..." then "Disconnected".
The weird part is that I know I get LTE signal right here (at my desk at work). I've been using the phone here all week. It was working fine, then it switched to disconnected. The first time I turned the data off/on, it connected, showed LTE, and sent an email I had tried to send. Now it refuses to connect at all.
I rebooted the phone, and it first connected to LTE, and now has full bars of 3G.
Anyone else notice something similar happen?
EDIT: Looks like it's Verizon possibly doing some tower work in NYC.
its possible you have a toasted sim card. not very common but i have seen it happen before on my gnex and a few others. Good luck
Another possibility is that Verizon in your area is fixing things.
If you are in Manhattan, a couple of us experienced unstable data connection these few days.
If such data disconnection happens cross the country , then it is a device's issue, which I suspect not.

Same thing keeps happening to me. It's frustrating because it will spool up LTE with full bars, not transmit any data and then disconnect completely from data. Will have to restart my phone which normally gets me back to working 3G until it happens again in an hour or so and have to repeat the process. Toggling the data connection on and off doesn't help. Verizon replaced my SIM card but it hasn't helped anything. Hoping it's just a temporary NYC issue.

Not surprising given some of the photos I've seen of their infrastructure after Sandy. Good to hear I'm not the only one.
This could be a different problem, but today I completely lost all mobile signal, both data and voice. It looked like I was in the subway (with no data icon and a little x next to the bars) . I waited for a couple of hours to see if the signal comes back, but it did not. A reboot fixed the issue.
I would not think much of this typically, but my wife has complained about exactly the same thing. Said she had to reboot the phone on two occasions already to get the signal back. WiFi worked fine though.
Could be a bug with the DNA.

Data seems to be working today. Looks to be a Verizon issue, not a DNA issue.

I have the SAME ISSUE, doesn't happen often, but when it does a reboot fixes it. I'm in Oklahoma. No problems last couple days, it's weird.

I had that issue than I took my sim out looked at it noticed a big ol finger print on it and took an eraser from a pencil lightly wiped it away and have not had the sim issue since

My wife was having issues with mobile signal until eventually the phone could not find the sim card. She took it out and put it back in. Problem solved.
I am quite impressed with her. Coming from an iPhone, which she called as stable and boring as a microwave, she is now rocking a themed launcher, all sorts of widgets, power Toggles, settings profiles, and messing with the sim card!

I had that issue with the Galaxy S2.
Simple and fast solution: walk into a local carrier store and pop in a new one. It's free, and surely saves time without having to stress over troubleshooting it
Hi Everyone,
I got the same issue. I did a quick search on xda for this issue and saw this thread on this topic.
I opted to get the HTC One X+ instead of the DNA.
The first week I got the phone (from UK) everything worked fine and now I can't get the data connection to work.
I am currently on Vodafone.
The funny thing is, I take the same SIM card put it into my HTC One X which I got here in Australia and it works fine. No problems, always get a data connection.
However since the new HTC One X+ worked fine for the last few weeks and now it doesn't, I don't think it has anything to do with the networks.
Now since DNA is having this same issue, I am wondering if it has to do with Jelly Bean or the Sense upgrade using the HTC One +(plus).
Very frustrating. Any further thoughts about this bloody frustrating issue ?

As stated, the same SIM card when put into my HTC One X works fine. I get a data connection right away?
Update. Got it working again. Network connections are a bit sensitive.
Will monitor this issue over the next week.
So it is not necessarily the SIM Card.

UPDATE !
I still have this frustrating problem. With my galaxy note 10.1 I have 75% connection on GSM and a network connection. With HTC One X+ 20% connection on GSM and NO network connection.
Is anyone else experiencing this?
Any suggestions anyone?
I have the same issue and I live in California. I think it's definitely a Droid DNA issue, not the Verizon network. I lose all mobile data, not just LTE. It happens probably a few times a day and even when I'm in the middle of a phone call. I'll have to restart my phone to get it working, but I've even had a couple of times where even a restart didn't work and I had to shut the phone off completely multiple times. This issue is rather frustrating!

Same issue here, I've continue to search the internet for a solution. I don't even know if it is hardware or software issue. It always disconnects exactly when I need it, so frustrating!!!!!!

It might not be a VZW problem but just incase go to a Vzw store and ask them if there are any down towers on the area if there aren't ask them for a warranty cpo replacement DNA. Hope this helps.

On Going WiFi Notification

After root I tried the method that worked on the S3 and it didn't fix it for me. Anyone else try yet? Or have another method besides modifying the wifi_networks_available_notification_on value?
ya the Sq lite method doesn't work on Jellybean. I'm also looking for a way to remove it.

If you uncheck the notification box for it in settings it does seem to work fine on this phone !

Are we talking about the message that says "Wi-FI networks available" if you leave Wi-Fi enabled 24/7 and travel around, and your phone finds open routers?
Because I am rocking an old Thunderbolt still with an ICS AOSP ROM and it does that as well.
If this issue is different however please explain.

There is a notification that ALWAYS displays your WiFi status. Doesn't matter if your WiFi is turned off, connected to a network, or aren't connected to a network. It never goes away.
I'm having too much fun with the s-pen.

Ah thanks I see now. That is really stupid. On every other version of the Note 2 (Intl + all non-Verizon US carriers) there is a Wi-Fi toggle in the top power bar, but not on Verizon. GG Verizon ruining everything they get their greedy little hands on.
They're like the Electronic Arts of the cell phone market.
"Verizon.... [email protected]#$ up everything."

Persistant WiFi issues on my SCH-i605

Ever since about May when Verizon pushed an update out, my WiFi functionality has gone completely down the ****ter. I will describe my symptoms to you.
If I connect to a known WiFi network, I can connect to it if I am in the same room. However, the moment I step into a different room I loose my WiFi icon on the status bar and if you go into your WiFi settings it will say "Authentication error". When you tap it to reconnect to it, sometimes it will bring up the password entry page and presume to say "Authentication error", sometimes it will do nothing.
The moment you walk back into the same room again, though, you have to open the WiFi settings but once you do it will connect back and say so at the bottom of the screen.
I have read that lots of people experience this only after a certain Verizon update, like me. I have gone as far as to load the original factory .tar file that Verizon first used, before any OTA updates applied.
There are numerous accounts of this problem relating to my specific model, multiple responses from Verizon reps on the Verizon forums, Samsung responses on there forums, and I have still not seen any kind of actual fix.
Is there some sort of remedy for this? I want to sell this phone soon, but not in this condition.

I also have a weird issue. I can't connect to any 2.4GHz networks at all. I have no problems connecting to 5GHz networks though.

It's crazy man. When did it start for you?
Sent from my SCH-I605 using xda app-developers app
I just noticed a few weeks ago when I tried connecting to someone's wifi and it just wouldn't. I did notice when I first got my phone that the speed on my 2.4GHz network on the phone was very slow, so I just used my 5GHz network. But now it won't even connect to any 2.4GHz networks at all. It sees the networks but just won't connect. It is a verizon refurbished so probably gonna have to unroot, return to stock, call and get another refurbished unit. Just didn't want to go through the hassle of there was a fix for it.

It's a known issue with the Note 2. I restored my phone back to stock, unrooted, did a factory reset, and still had the issue. So I called verizon and they said it's a known issue that lots of people have called in about. They are sending me a replacement, which I should receive tomorrow. I'd recommend doing the same.
I had to do the same just yesterday, so my replacement should get here in two days.

Got my replacement today and connected no problem!

Man you guys are lucky. I'm wondering if it's a hardware issue.... Maybe my wireless is just ****ed. It really sucks because my warranty is expired and it didn't happen until after that...

You might be able to add the monthly warranty and swap it out

Total Equipment Protection I think it's called. Like $10 a month or so
