Hello!
I searched this site for URLs and paths of where OTA update files from Samsung come from during download.
I found the server for HTC phones.
I also found the server for Google's OTA server - http://android.clients.google.com/... - it is used for Google's own Nexus updates and Samsung Nexus phones, as well as, for some reason, for updates for some other Samsung phones, especially if they are sold by Sprint.
Since there is no general Samsung forum, I thought I would ask here, I hope that is OK.
What are the server URLs and paths of Samsung OTA update files?
Does Samsung not have its own server like ota.samsung.com or like that? Does it actually use the Google server for each and every phone?
I cannot find a thread on this site that covers this.
If only some Samsung phones get updates from the Google server, why is that?
I have only noticed that for Samsung Nexus and Sprint Samsung phones.
Thank you, much appreciated!
--Droiderino
Never seen an OTA url from day one of this forum .
Their was a method of downloading direct from the servers but that has been closed down .
Search CHECKFUS post.
jje
Found something.
It is starting like this: http://fota-cloud-dn.ospserver.net/firmware/
Still begs the question why not all Samsung phones download their OTA updates from that location.

What are you basing this on?
I think you're the only one who cares about this tbh.
XDA don't really take interest in OTA a Samsung forum might have more information .

This, for example:
android.clients.google.com/packages/ota/sprint_samsung_l720.update_SPH-L720_MDL_CSB_user_RP_to_MF9_CSB_user_RP.zip
As was reported here:
http://androidromupdate.com/2013/07/09/sprint-galaxy-s4-ota-update-l720vpuamf9-stock-via-recovery/
It is for a Samsung S4 from Sprint. There are also other Sprint Samung phones that get updated via google servers.
What are the updates doing there instead of being stored at Samsung servers?

That may well be, but ...
... there's always hope someone in the know stumbles upon this thread, and I wouldn't get that until I at least tried.
I've still not seen anything to prove its pushed out from "samsung servers" for other devices. And the question really adds nothing to development. It does nothing except attempt to satisfy your curiosity.
I think there are more important questions to be asked.

First thing i do with a rom is rip out OTA and Kies update stuff and never use OTA updates .
As i said a Samsung forum may have a better idea of who stores OTA .

I did not find any general Samsung forum here at XDA, that's why I posted in the S III forum.
The official Samsung developer forum has virtually no traffic.
Would you please kindly direct me (link) to which Samsung forum you are referring to?
Then I might ask there also.
Do you mean at androidforums.com or at androidcentral.com or android.net or somewhere more applicable?
Thank you.

No a Samsung forum not XDA a forum that deals with Samsung products rather than a developers forum .As XDA is a developers forum then OTA is not relevant to most users .
The guy that built Checkfus is probably your best point of information regarding OTA .
Its fairly common to rent storage space from other servers if yours are overloaded and guess who has the largest number of worldwide servers .

Ah, that is actually a fairly reasonable explanation!
...and if you just have to ask on xda, since your evidence is about a sprint s4 getting updates from Google servers, the sprint s4 forum makes more sense than the i9300 forum.

Droiderino, thank you for posting the question, and what you had found. I know at this point the thread is YEARS old, but information can live forever online. Those members that tried to thwart this thread because they didn't find it interesting or useful themselves at the time don't seem to realize that the more information that is gathered and disseminated, regardless of who is uninterested, can help in ways they may not yet understand, both in the present, and in the future. Stay curious!

Hey Friends,
I guess most of you guys have already heard about that little tracking software that your carrier or Samsung have probably installed on our Galaxy S II phones, as well as almost all the other Android phones. (For more on that spyware and what it does:
http://www.theverge.com/2011/11/30/2601695/carrier-iq-controversy
So, now that I'm a little concerned about my privacy, the following question comes to my mind: Can we uninstall this tracking software? What would we have to do to uninstall it? Or will it be hard to remove?
Edit: Thanks for the nice tagging ;-) Just to clarify: I'm aware that there are other threads in the general android discussion etc., but given the complexity of this software (according to those threads it's very hard to remove if it's on the phone) and the fact that the implementation could differ from device to device this might still be worth discussing in here. I did not want to annoy anyone, sorry if I did
Did you try to find the app with Titanium Backup? Or Root Uninstaller? When the Carrier IQ software shows up just delete it
If not, google: 'delete carrier iq android'
First three hits were usefull
(Im a new member so can't post outside links yet )
Only found on American handsets. Nothing on any of the international firmware I've tested for it. This is being blown out of proportion by people who don't have a clue what they are talking about. Samsung was forced to include this rootkit on their American devices by the carriers. Nothing to worry about if you don't have an Amaerican handset.
Agreed with Intratech. I have scanned my ROM and couldn't find any trace of CIQ.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using Tapatalk
If you're a Sprint customer, you don't belong in these forums. Almost all Sprint devices have CIQ.
If you're an AT&T customer, you only belong in these forums if you bough an international GT-I9100 or are intimately aware of what things are common between the I777 and I9100 and what aren't.
If you don't have an I777 you shouldn't be here.
Only the newest AT&T phones and updates (****rocket, Vivid, unreleased but leaked Infuse Gingerbread updates) have CIQ. The I777 does not (except maybe in the leaks), no I9100 firmware does.
People need to learn to read before posting. If your device had CIQ, you would know it. It is insulting to the developers to say "can someone check if we have this?" - If the I9100 had it, it would have been publicized LONG ago. CIQ has made big news recently, but any developer with half a brain knew early on whether their device has CIQ.
Please use the Q&A Forum for questions Thanks

I am using an SGSII and I am on A1(a carrier from Austria).
I have no branding on my phone, but I still found a very conspicuous process named "LogsProvider" with a lot of permissions.
Is this the thing you are talking about?

No...........
i bet with the passage of time we will see several providers that enable carrier IQ or similar programmes with different names, its sad how things work these days ...i wish some hardcore developer will come up with a simple free app that can get rid of all these crappy "spy softwares " and put it on android market(for free) its a must have ... .rest assured he will get my donations and a big up .i would even sleep with such a developer if i were a girl
supercurio made a detector for it, so you can check if your device has it or not.

Hi,
does anybody have any contact to someone in google with who I'm able to talk about partnership regarding licensing google apps for android?
I'm trying to contact them since April 21st to every email address I could find on the net, but I didn't get any response.
Thing is I'm developing my rom for my hardware which is manufactured in China, based on Amlogic chipset, it is fully compatible with their tests and passes all of them...
Don't know what else to do... I'm thinking of writing a story about my experience and mail it to press..... maybe that will get to google...

Not a problem (as long as it doesn't happen again ). I did leave it in development for a few days as I was 50/50 about whether it was the right place or not, so moving it now will probably give you twice the exposure.
Hope you get the answer you're looking for.

Well, I started to write down all things that I tried to accomplish my mission and will keep writing until something happens
Link: http://contacting-google.wgmetal.hr/
Looks like I've fallen victim (as well as others) to not noticing that there are 2 forums for the Galaxy S3 and bricking my phone not even 24 hrs after getting it in my hands.
Any way this forum could give at least *some* indication in the forum name that it is for the International version? It seems like a simple way to save a lot of people a lot of stress and $$. Had I seen International version in the forum name, or somewhere in a sub-forum, I would have avoided it altogether and easily avoided hard bricking my phone.
In my case what I did when rooting was follow this forum to this thread:
SAMSUNG GALAXY S3 TOOLKIT V3.0
and noticed that AT&T SGS3 uses a different toolkit, so i followed the link to:
SAMSUNG GALAXY S3 QCOM TOOLKIT V1.0
thinking it was just a different thread in this same forum (I've never come across split forums in any of the previous phones Android or otherwise) I followed everything there, and had zero issues with rooting and getting CWM on there.
I went back to the Android development sub-forum and decided I'd stick with a ROM similar to the stock rom for starters (seems the least adventurous, just in case), the most common seeming to be CM9 or Omega. I've already seen CM9, so I figured I'd try out Omega. Downloaded it, copied it over to internal SD, followed the usual boot to CWM, backup, clear data, clear cache, and flash zip.
Installer ran through, said it was successful, and showed an error about a mismatched property (can't remember the exact error). Installer said it would reboot, I clicked go and that was the last the screen turned on.
I've had at least a fair amount of experience with flashing ROMs, bootloaders, etc. across several phones and have had no serious hard bricking issues until recently. I usually pay attention to indications of different versions of a particular phone and which ROMs, etc go with which phone but this one got the best of me.
Note the heads up on the first page .

Last time I check, this number is only for international SGS3
Seems like I start to think like a Green Day's song...
Sorry to hear your phone is broken.
Have you tried getting it into download mode or using a Jig?
One of both methods should get you running again.
Btw, cm9 is the absolute opposite of stock Rom: it has NOTHING Samsung-specific since it is built from heavily modified Google sourcecode,

People have already explained how to differentiate between the international version and the US version.
This forum has I9300 written on top, that means international version.
Your phone has its own forum easily found by searching for att galaxy sIII.
Your phone isn't the I9300 so why would you flash it with stuff for that model??
Would you flash a kernel for a I9250 or a rom for an I515? No.
Sorry this happened to your phone but it happens so often here that now not a single f*ck will be given as it is down to not reading and not searching. User error.
This has been fixed before so try search here and in your respective forum.
Lesson learned.

Closed, we even have a sticky right here in both the general and Q/A sections, and in a moment the dev section which should direct people to the right place, sorry you decided not to read enough stuff before flashing your £400 device
I am not asking this question based purely on the specs but more based on the specs and the world these phones live in. What i mean is, both are proven, good, reliable Android phones. But consider the price you would pay for an unlocked contract free handset on Ebay or somewhere. Availability off latest software and updates etc.
I was looking on Ebay UK and seems you could get a good example of either phone for around £250. Now i hate bloatware so rooting on the S2 is essential to remove any crap useless programmes.. stock market prices app as standard...!! do they think we are all rich stock market traders!!!
Galaxy Nexus is pretty much bloatware free and i actually now run the F1 Galaxy Nexus ROM on my S2 and i prefer it 5000% over any version of GB or ICS.
So seeing now that JellyBean 4.1 is available for Nexus phones and may/may not ever appear on the S2 and if it does it could take a while. Google Nexus phones seem to be getting their Google updates pretty much straight away, take these things into account....
Does anyone think the Nexus might currently have gained an edge over the S2, maybe even the S3 and the best Samsung Android phone currently available?

Okay I will tell you what I think about. My suggestion is, that more and more people want the newest Google experience. So they want the Galaxy Nexus. It´s a good device, but it has not the power off the Galaxy S 3. But you must ask, is it be needed? I think not! You can have a good OS without much power. Look at windows phone single processor and 512 MB of RAM and not so bad performance in many cases.
Some little points are very imported you may miss. The GN has no FM-Radio, "only" a 5 MP Camera and no SD Slot. So everybody can choose what is imported for yourself.
One point I miss... Do we need a update each time?

The I545 is not simlocked, which means that you can run any carrier's SIM. There are SEVERAL threads here that explain what you need to do to run an I545 on T-Mobile. Unfortunately, the search function is broken yet again, but there is NO excuse for starting another thread on a topic that has been covered several times before.
I know, you can't tell, but this is a very frequently asked and answered question.

By the way, the forums are seperated by device and carrier because that's how the software works, it's different per device and the carrier that device uses. This is a site for developers.

Sorry if you thinking this is "trolling by a veteran user".
First, you need to understand: the i545 is not SIM locked. Any SIM will work.
However, there's some question as to whether or not that SIM will allow other US carriers to work. Mine works with a SIM that gives me AT&T data. (It's from a European carrier.)
Here's how you can answer your question. First, look at the top of this window.
There's a box on the top reading "Search this forum".

Using any one of those will connect you with people trying to use their Verizon phones on T-Mobile.

That's the guide to use your phone on T-Mobile. It's on the first page of the general section lol.
By the way, the forums are seperated by device and carrier because that's how the software works, it's different per device and the carrier that device uses. This is a site for developers.

I mean that as compliment to website. And yes I know the site is for developers as it is named. But this is the place where developers release and discuss there stuff so evryday android user can use there releases as suits to them accordingly... right? or developers just make it for them selves?

Sorry. Hit send too early..
Basic steps are to get a sim.
Then go and see if it picked ip the APN settings. If not you should be able to create a new APN and put in the values manually. Search on xda for the values
Finally. Theres a thread in xda that explains how to download a phone info app. Which will allow you to set the phone radio to LTE/GSM.
last thing you want to check is that you can do wifi, sms, mms, voice mail, etc.

A lot of people do make things for themselves, I run my own crappy builds all the time as I'm learning. Of course the more experienced developers release stable work for the public. Regardless, the purpose of the site isn't to release software for the "everyday android user".
It's about the journey not the end result.
I really can't explain the purpose of this site any better than this post by Kyphur:
"I think what a lot of people forget is that this is not a "make my phone neat & kewl" place.
As implied by the name this is technically a Developers forum/community.
Now what does that mean? Well first off it means that there is an expectation that if you are here then you want to customize your device but rather than just installing something that someone packaged you want to understand how it works and maybe even enhance it yourself.
When I first came here with a Blue Angel it was a different environment. PDA Phones were not embraced by the general public because of the expense and complexity (I paid over $400 for my BA). A $400 phone 4 years ago was expensive, today the Tilt is $300 after rebates but with inflation & the rise in the cost of other devices and the fact that there are other sources out there giving them away for $150 our neat bit of kit has become popular with mainstream users.
Now we have a flood of new users who are asking not "How can I do this myself" but more like "Give me the quick fix" without caring to understand the process. See if you read the threads then you get to experience the learning process, you see how the issues were investigated and confirmed. Then you get to watch the different attempts at resolution and learn why some failed while others worked. That is called Development.
The NooB backlash is coming from users who have walked in the development shoes and is directed mainly at those who don't care for the journey but just want the end result or destination.
As a Development Forum we are just as much (if not more) about the journey. I've read so many comments like "I don't have time to read all of the threads" or "I don't care how it works, just that it does". These very statements are contrary to the heart & soul of XDA-Devs and that is why the backlash is so strong.
Let me be very clear on this: IF YOU DON'T CARE ABOUT UNDERSTANDING THE JOURNEY THEN YOU PROBABLY SHOULDN'T BE HERE IN THE FIRST PLACE.
XDA-Devs is about developers & hackers helping each other and working together to get the most out of our devices by understanding them better than most.
XDA-Devs is not about helping everyone who wants a "Kewl bit of kit" make their phone better than the guy next to him.
Now do we go kicking users off who never contribute anything, NO. We tolerate it to an extent. Where the toleration ends is when these users start diluting the usefulness of the forum by repeating the same questions over and over again.
You ask us to understand your position. Well if you want to benefit from our experience and time then I think it is only fair that you understand our position."

I ddnt mean to be like rude or anything guys. So sorry for acting like that.
Now honestly i Google about android rooting/self installin the new version and XDA comes up all the time, so I've known about website long time ago and I see that there are like 100s of posts a minute mostly by total newbs. I'm newbie to android and XDA but like actually do wanna learn this stuff. Thats why I even asked if there are threads/links to where I can brush up beginner stuff so I then if I stll have any issues I can ask the question in a technical manner or even understand different threads that have already answered the question(s) that I have.
As for developer part you guys are programmers and hackers and its your hobby and its pretty cool you do this stuff on daily basis, but for me that is too far ahead.
Now I have another device unlocked NExus S i got from tmobile back in 2011, I wanna update it to latest OS KitKat. I will now look up XDA all over myself, let you know how it goes. Hopefully it will work out.
Thanks again.
EDIT: P.S. the first day i posted search wasnt working. Or maybe I ddnt search the right sections. I'll do XDA search through Google now

I didn't think you were being a rude, but I just thought I would share with you post that explains the purpose of XDA very well. It might seem harsh because it's out of context & was originally directed at some a$$hole.
We were all newbs here, I'm no programmer I just like learning code because I like learning how all of this stuff works. I'm glad you want to start learning to. All I did in the beginning was google search "rooting" and a bunch of write-ups & video's came up that taught me a lot.
I think this all falls under off topic this is really not the place for senior members to try b!+ch slap junior members, staying on topic is how this site operates
