unusual battery drain by voice calls - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello all,
I am using gt i9300 with android revolution installed(leaked 4.2.2).
I made two calls today each of duration less than 1 minute.
after an idle time of 4 hours i checked the battery consumption stats.Voice calls occupies the top spot with 40% of the total battery usage.this would be normal as battery stats are relative.but after touching the voice calls ,i get Time on for battery calls as 2h48min.i have only spoken for two minutes but the stats show as if i have spoken for two hours and then theres the battery drain(40%).
could someone please explain whats causing this the phone to register as if i have talking for 2 hours on the phone.i have better battery stats installed,it shows that the phone has no or unknown signal for 17 hrs(the time since boot).i live in an area with notorious cell signal.hope these help.if any thing else is needed, please tell me and i will post it here so that it will help you in deducing the problem.

[Q] Voice Calls is draining my battery

Hi folks,
My SGS2 is driving me craaaaazy ... i'm on KE2 with root and arabic patch from madmack ... i discharged the battery a couple of times on this firmware to recalibrate it and even tried a hard reset but nothing seems working at all.
everything seems normal except the battery and voice calls percentage which i only spoke for like 15 mins and percentage all the way up to 74%. With only one hour on the battery, it goes from 90% to 86% on idle. I need help guys.
PS: sorry for my bad english.
From what I understand you are saying that after an hour of using battery power, a 15min phone calls is showing up as 74% battery usage.
This seems completely normal to me...
I think quite a few people are failing to grasp the concept of percentages.
..or is it me?
all i meant was that my phone battery doesn't hold on for a hole day and this is a proof >>

we can't help you because that's normal. i get the same sort of performance.
it's not a defect, it's a feature.
I wont say thats normal at all, i own an galaxy s 2 myself and i cant get more then 4 hours of usage from full battery(no auto sync and data on only when i need it). If you had a ****ty phone before galaxy that doesn't mean 4 hours of usage is normal.
Here's what we should be expecting...
I hope mine gets these results. Only 2 charges for me so far.
Copy an dpaste in browser as I couldn't post link due to low post count.

thanks for replies ... i reflashed the KE2 ROM again at a full charge ... did a hard reset, changed wallpaper to black, wifi ,BT and data is off. i will test and report back the result.

[Q] strange issue with 'cell standby'

Generally speaking I'm in good coverage but I'm having this weird issue. Some days after charging over night I unplug the phone and have great battery life that day. Looking at the battery status everything looks as you would expect, cell standby appearing pretty low in the list and showing maybe 1 or 2% 'time without signal'
Then other days, for no apparent reason, my battery life will be terrible and cell standby will be the highest battery drain on the list (40% or so) and showing 100% 'time without signal'. However, and this is the bit I don't understand... I do actually have good signal in both cases. I've tested by sending and receiving texts and calls.
I guess my question is, does anybody know why my phone might 'think' it has no signal even though it does, and why it consumes more battery when this happens?
Something I've noticed also is that 'settings>status>signal strength shows that i do have a signal in both cases (pretty much same values in both too). But, when doing '*#*#4636#*#*' it shows '-0dbm 0 asu' if my phones having the 100% thing.
Same issue here, I have 100% time without signal however I have full 3-4 bars of signal. Charged before nifht, unplugged and lost 25% of battery over night because of this, as if the phone had no coverage at all.
Usually setting it to offline mode and back to online helped, but today it does not help...
Same issue here. Even if the sim card's not in. Too many issues with this phone. Will end up on ebay!
Omg, don't panic dude. Just wait patiently on firmware update

I've got the same issue, well atleast mine says "time without signal 100%" eventho I do have signal most of the time..however my drain seems to small in comparison to yours..it usually takes like 10% - 15% of battery in a full charge, so quite normal.
wonder why it shows 100% time without signal tho....
i have the same problems on my phone. i got the '-0dbm 0 asu' reading working once and the time without connection went down from 100% to 99%. but i was so happy i can't remember what i did :S i tried all different kinds of firmwares. but i'm tryin to get it to work again. :S it had something to do with the cdma or gsm mode on my phone.
let's hope we get it fixed it really drains my battery
In the same boat as you lot. Cell standby battery use is very low but getting reports of "Time without a signal" 99%, even though I have full 4 bars most of the time and make and receive calls with no issue.
Running XWKE7 for what it's worth, are any of you guys on different firmware?
i knew something was odd, i spent today wondering why over 2 hrs my battery dropped from 80% to 50% and even when I try to reboot and recharge, the 'cell standby stats' say its been on since recharge and at 100%.
i'm on XXKG1 with litening rom v 2.2 flashed earlier.

[Q] High "Cell standby" percentage at battery info

Hi,
I watched my battery info a moment ago and don't know if those stats are normal.
Cell standby: 42%
- Time on 19h 44m
- Time without a signal 100%
Display: 20%
Android System: 15%
Phone idle: 7%
Android OS: 6%
"Cell standby" seems to use much battery power and my phone signal strengh does not show more than 2 of 5 "bars" in the notification bar (inside buildings). Data network is not enabled.
Now I'm not sure if the antenna of my phone might be defect cause of this high battery usage. I am also sometimes not reachable if people try to call me.

But you miss the key component battery used in that time span .
1% battery used 90% used ???
Your post reads as phone not receiving a signal .Phone sleeping/not in use .
Of the battery used in that time 42% was cell standby NOT 42% of the battery 42 % of the amount used .
more than 2 of 5 "bars" in the notification bar (inside buildings)
No network will guarantee any reception inside buildings . Faraday cage and all that .
Test the phone outside the building first for signal strength .

Cell standby
If you know you wont have signal turn airplane mode on, to save it from searching for a signal all the time, and thus draining some battery.
@Jesmicael: Thanks! I'll watch this thread.
@JJEgan:
My phone uses about 12% battery within 9 hours. No display, no data network, no wlan, no gps, but about 1h of listening to music in this timespan.
I got signal inside buildings most time (with 0-2 bars) but it also happend to me that I was not reachable, even when I placed the phone next to an open window. Outside of the building I have maximum signal.
I did not have any problems with my older LG phone in the same situation.
Of course I know that this 42% are just compared to other battery users
@veyka:My phone is not placed in an isolated cage, and I want to be reachable in this time. Airplane mode is good for saving battery, but not when you want to use a "phone" ^^

Phone gives full signal so nothing wrong with the phones hardware or antenna .
Your alternative is to take the phone to a service centre .

Seeing as you're pretty much putting your phone in stasis for the 9 hours of usage. i think its pretty normal drain. it just looks like the only thing the phone is actually using is the antenna.
Just a wild idea, did you set the phone to GSM/WCDMA auto?

Yes, but does it matter, if I have no data connection enabled? If so, what should I use instead?
Maybe this battery "drain" of the cell standby is normal, when I do not use the phone in this time. On the other hand I am a bit confused, cause due Samsungs official data sheet, the phone should last up to 620h in standby with 3g enabled.
Of course the realistic value is less than 620h, but not 6 times less.
Ive come to realise that this might just be an erroneous stat. I honestly don't think it takes up 100% of my battery. Cell standby has actually deceased since I've flashed villainrom 2.1
any one else have a clue?
I had a theory that since my gsii its actually gt-i9100t not gt-i9100 it might make a little,difference.. whoo knows.. :/

I've come to the conclution that the SG2 is not for use it all day, I have turned it on this morning connected all day to wifi/dataplan and after 14 hours the battery is dead. Will not be able to use it for an entire day.
Pd: wanted to share a pic but seems that the forums are not allowing the png format.

mine lasts all day even with pretty heavy useage mate
you will get about 5 hours screen time on average from this device and battery .
I suggest checking to see if you have killed samsung bloatware that likes to run all the time , installed juice defender which helps a lot , adjusted your start up programs , installed latest firmware or a custom rom like leomar2.1 , if you cant get 3g signal switch to 2g only , switch wifi/gps/bluetooth off when not in use .
Doing all of the above will get you excellent battery life and you will easily last through the day .
The only way i can kill my battery in a day is with some severe gaming sessions and dlna sessions or internet browsing sessions
Battery and phone are fine its the setup thats important
Hope you get it sorted peeps and have a great day too
Look its really normal. You phone will use power in standby, so there is really nothing wrong. The numbers are relative.

Battery Meter: Extreme drain when in use

I bought the samsung s2 primarily because of the amazing reviews it got for battery life.
I got mine 2 days ago and right from the start there were problems. I charged the unit three hours and according to the battery meter it had still not charged. then I tried to turn on the phone nevertheless, and it said it had 100% battery life. I then used it for 2 mins and it dropped down to 0% again and powered down. Then on charge back up to 100% in a couple of moments and back down to 0 % mins later. I took the battery out then put it back in - and then it was working fine again.
Now on day two, I've noticed an immense drain when its in use. Check out the screenshots. I think I'd be lucky to get two hours solid use out of it.
Should I return it, or does this look standard?
The battery needs some time before it reaches it full potential. In the mean time do some searching cause there already are enough battery life threads.
I already searched and read many of the other battery threads but didnt come across anyone who'd experienced the problem I described.

Correct 0-100% about four hours longer on a brand new phone ,
then I tried to turn on the phone nevertheless, and it said it had 100% battery life. I then used it for 2 mins and it dropped down to 0% again and powered down. Then on charge back up to 100% in a couple of moments and back down to 0 % mins later. I took the battery out then put it back in - and then it was working fine again.
bad battery connections clean .
Now on day two - I charged it at 9pm last night and by 9.30 am unplugged it was down to 84%. This with no apps open, no widgets running - nothing. wifi was active though.
Overnight is variable and Wifi uses battery .
then in using it for just 40 mins - doing nothing more than internet surfing through wifi; it drops from 84 - 68%.
Does this pace of battery power loss sound consistant with other users experiences, or should I return the unit and ask for a new one?
I think you have two choices one charge the battery read all the battery posts .
Or return to seller .
Personally i would turn WiFi GPS etc off at night charge phone to 100% see what it drops to by morning .Big drop and it would be returned as your original 100% to 0 drop very quickly suggests a possible fault .

Thanks for your feedback.
I've read through quite a few posts there.
One thing; do we know how long galaxy s2 should be able to be on for if the screen was on the whole time? Is four hours low, or does that sound right??
50% or less on brightness playing SD video should last more then 7 hours , browsing web however can be 5ish+ .
Screen at 100% and browsing web drains battery fast , 4 sounds about right.
It all depends what and how you doing it ?
Well I have it on auto brightness, usually which seems to be around 50%....
and I'm web browsing or just playing around with settings and looking at menus. I'm down to 45% battery and have probably had the screen lit up for maybe 90 mins max??
rest of the time phone has been on idle with wifi on but no network activity...
does this sound below what it shoudl be??
OK I've now attached my screenshot.
Does this battery usage seem normal??
i.e, such extreme drops when the phone is in active use???
All I've been doing is texting, some wifi surfing, and looking at menus.
Search the forum for "Android OS bug". There's no solution yet though. Turning wifi off when you're not using it helps.

Hi there.
I have installed Lite’ning Rom v1.5. Everything is working ok, but yesterday before sleeping I had battery 80 %, today after 6 h it drops to 1 %. I have data transfer turned off, also Gps, WiFi, ... Also before 2 weeks it drops from 100 % to 70 % after some hours with no using.
I have to add, that my battery held up for 4 days once with no particular using.
Any ideas plz?
Thx for answer.

Is my battery normal ?

Hi
I have a Galaxy S3, Videotron SGH-T999V (same as T-Mobile)
It's my first cell phone after many years, so I need your help to know if the battery is fine or not
on WIFI everything is ok,
on HSPA+ :
if I'm using Google Navigation in google map (with GPS activated and screen brightness 50%) while driving, I'm losing about 26% per hour.
If I'm listening TuneIn Radio (with the screen off) in a bus or while driving, I'm losing 20% per hour
If I'm not moving with TuneIn (screen still off), I'm losing 15% per hour (compared to 7% on WIFI)
I know 3g/4g is using more juice than wifi, but is it a normal drain or there is a problem ?
thank you
The GPS sounds about normal to me, mine drops around 20% an hour while driving.
Can't comment about the other 2 things, but if your signal levels are low then yeah, it makes sense.
How many times have you let te battery run down to nothing and then charged it? The first few days, I thought the battery life was horrible, but after a few complete discharges, the battery life seems a lot better.
