[Q] Sprint Evo 4g lte question - Sprint HTC EVO 4G LTE

Hello everyone, newbie here. I have worked on a few personal phones, however, trying to get my daughter's phone setup. I have read pages and pages of postings on how to do this, but I am a little confused now.Basically, I would like to have root access with recovery mode, which in the process I assume makes phone unlocked? I would like for her to be able to tether through her phone with either built in hot spot or wifi tether app. Not putting any custom mods, just would like modified stock. Can I please get some suggestions on which method to use and correct procedure so I don't jack up her phone. Thanks for any responses. Does it need to be S-off?
Sprint Evo 4g Lte
Software version 3.16.651.3 710RD

Click the DIY guide link in my sig to get you going
S-OFF is not really needed but recommended
Any other questions PM me

Your best bet is to unlock the bootloader and install a custom recovery on the phone. From there you can actually root the phone either with TWRP recovery or by flashing the superuser binary zip in recovery, which will give you root access. You can then install an app like WiFi tether from the Play store. In addition to BigDaddy's link, check out the link in my sig, also. I explain the difference between bootloader versions, the difference in root & S-off, and have a few different links to help you get your phone rooted, plus some other junk
Feel free to shoot me a PM if you have any questions, or just ask here in the thread.

Thanks for your help, guide was perfect, worked like a charm, actually almost the same as when I did my original Evo 4g. Now for S-off and wifi tether

Thanks again

look in the "rollup sticky" thread over in the Development forum. Video tutorials and write-ups and links to drivers etc. are all in there.
This should be all you need to root, flash a recovery and install su. Follow the directions exactly and you wont have any issues. Works for me although I use TWRP 2.0.
Should note, Im a cdma user.
ok, thank you very much, I post it here if I have some more questions
Ok, Since three days I have root with cwm on my phone, the next thing would be what rom is good? Want to flash a custom Rom but I like the original sense htc style and just want to overclock and have some more options in the menus...would be nice if someone could tell me

If your just getting the phone now, chances are its gonna have hboot 1.5. So you'd have to use the HTC method.

YA Hboot1.5 your stuck with HTC method use CWM for recovery alot of folks had issues with TWRP 2.0 not flashing right and dirty flashes.
Themes won't flash right along with other things.
Twrp 2.0 works perfectly for me. Only one version of clockwork will stick...so I use twrp, I like the touch based recovery. And I've had no issues making nands or restoring them. This coming from years of using clockwork. Just gotta adapt.

Hello! I ve already wrote that I have the phone and have root on it with cwm...I very already rooted it, so next thing would be a good Rom with overclock functionality

[Q] Root/unlock/s-off question

I know, i know...probably sick of these questions by now...
So i typically went the s-off un-official root methods with evo/3vo. Im thinking this time around i want to take a different approach as my needs have changed.
Im much more interested in keeping stock rom/kernel for the time being and being able to use root apps (like tether).
The grey area for me is exactly what does the HTC method of unlock allow me to do? I understand its not S-off.
Is it possible to root my phone and still take OTA's? (via HTC unlock or other methods)
Lastly what is the downside to HTC dev unlock? i understand it marks the phone in some way as unlocked and voids the warranty?
thanks
I know for a fact you could have root and not have to do the HTC unlock.
So what exactly does HTC unlock do then, is there a way to root and still get ota updates?
Sent from my EVO using XDA
Unlocking will allow you to: replace recovery, which opens up to much more you can do.

Unlock allows you to flash custom roms, like the Viper Rom.
Direct form HTC's bootloader unlock FAQ guide
Your device is shipped with Security on (S-ON) to protect your system software configuration (such as the bootloader, radio, boot, recovery, system and others). After you have unlocked the bootloader, however, you will have lifted the restrictions on boot, recovery and system. This means you can customize boot, recovery and system images on your phone as you desire. You can easily see that you have successfully unlocked the bootloader by looking at the top of the screen when entering the bootloader screen. Security is left on to protect things like the radio, and SIM lock.

I'm surprised no one has answered your questions. If you're just rooted with a stock ROM you should still get ota's

Thanks ! I'm totally new to the scene (smart phones in general, must less the root scene). While I'm fairly computer literate, I feel like a toddler going "Ooo what's this? " "Why?" "Why?" "what's that? "
Not trying to be a jerk, but any thread with a [Q] should go in Q&A.
I'm more shocked there isn't a s-off wip thread yet however many people haven't git their phone either..

s-off allows you to flash radio's and kernels. Unlocking only allows you to flash Roms, and other things that don't effect the kernel or radio images.
IE, none of the aosp roms would be able to be flashed without s-off, because they use different kernels than the stock one.
Root works, and I have installed viperRom and it works well with a few mods that the stock rom doesnt have.
oh crap!! I didn't even think about not being able to flash AOSP without S-off. My only intention buying this phone was to be able to run AOSP ASAP.
But wait, are you sure about not flashing kernels? I thought people with the Evo 3d and S-on were able to flash kernels via flash_image GUI?
sent from my Evo LTE, usually.
So i rooted using the script...painless.
Just what i wanted, root but stock everything. Also picked up a app i saw in the apps section called voodoo something or other, that lets u temp unroot for updates/backup root. Sounds cool, hope it works. SU, wireless tether, and titanium all seem to work fine.
Maybe its just me, but i did notice the phone has some stutters now during startup and shortly after...prob just me

Any new way of rooting after the latest OTA?

I lost root after the latest OTA , and wont try anything until something safe is out, heard a few people tried the Regawmod and now the phone is dead paperweight!!
Nothing is out yet, but I am sure that the Dev's are working on it. :good:
It's crazy the amount of people that took the OTA update and were rooted. No offence to the OP, just seeing this ? Popping up all over the forum . It really is madness taking the update if your concerned about root.
Hope all works out for you man

I took the OTA and I'm rooted again.... It's not even that difficult.
I wanted google wallet and I wanted it bad! So I ran thru the hastle of hacking Google wallet so I could get into settings and clear it. Then HTC re-locked my phone. Ran the RUU, then accepted the OTA. From here I ran the HTC unlock again. Then flashed TWRP (I used adb fastboot method):
http://teamw.in/project/twrp2/98
Once that's installed you can flash supersu via this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1538053
Find: CWM installable ZIP in the OPs sig block (it works fine with TWRP on 1.22 software)
From there I just installed busybox (by Stepen) via the market. Grabbed Titanium Backup, and here I am. Rooted phone with 1.22 stock ROM.
Not all of the old mods work anymore though. My favorite, which was the battery mods, don't work. They don't even come close to working, so make sure you nandroid backup before you start tinkering..
Nah!! too complicated...I just wait for a new method.

I received similar advice from a forum moderator, and as soon as I have time and the ability to singularly focus on the process, I will give this a try.
However, I think a lot of us want the one-step method for rooting the LTE with the new OTA installed. For those of us new to the process and negative results, we chalked this up as one of the infamous "lessons learned."
Thanks!

If you're sitting there with the OTA already applied....the whole process takes about 5 minutes. I would love to script it out, but I'm still learning, and have no idea how to do that. If anyone here knows a little something, I'd be more than happy to help/test/etc. I'd love to be able to give the community a one click root for the OTA....
Have you tryed this?

How can i root my htc evo 4g lte on 2.13?

Hey guys im looking to get help and a tutorial on how to root the 4g lte on 2.13? I've searched online but still haven't found an answer to my question. So if you are reading this let me know how to root it thanks.
Your only option is to use the htcdev.com method. You cannot get s-off though.

You've already been given a couple links with step-by-step guides.
I suggest reading this guide first to help you understand the terminology better: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1869377
Then if you have any specific questions please let us know. Saying simply that "you still don't know what to do" after being given a couple of direct links to guides will get you nowhere.

Unlocking your bootloader using HTCDev Unlock will allow you to flash a custom recovery. With a custom recovery, obtaining root is easy (plenty of flashable ZIPs for this). This has nothing to do with your version of HBOOT (or firmware or OTA version).
Read the guide I linked to above and it will answer these questions...

Hi everyone,
First time poster here. Recently rooted my own HTC Amaze and thought I'd give veegsej some tips on what worked for me, so here we go
Honestly the best and easiest way to root your phone is to use Hasoon2000's HTC Amaze All-In-One Toolkit! Plug your phone into the computer and follow the onscreen instructions when you open the program.
After you've unlocked the bootloader (from the instructions given in the program), install a recovery- I suggest the first one on the list (4EXT). Under *Extras*, run perm root to push supersu.zip onto your phone. After all that, boot your phone into recovery mode and use 4EXT to find and install supersu.zip file. Once you do this, you'll be fully rooted and good to go!
*Extra tip*- in 4EXT I also recommend you turn on the *Smart Flash* option which will enable your phone to install/flash roms and all sorts of goodies in the future. :victory:
Hope this helps!

You're right the forums do have all the information available. I was hoping my post would at least, in a nutshell, summarize everything that had to be done so he/she would know what to do in just a few short paragraphs.
What if there was a section for noob's for every device?
I bet people would still take the time to say "You need to search!" Lol. Not directed at anyone specific, just a joke
