[Q] Flex and ghost/phantom touches - Xperia Tablet Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I just bought a SGP311 (US Wifi 32G). When researching what tablet to buy, I did see some reference to phantom screen touches when flexing the screen, but I think the video said it was cleared up by firmware updates.
Mine is running .370, which I understand to be the newest available for the SGP311 (25 Aug 2013).
I find the phantom touches so sensitive and terrible that I can't believe there is not more stink about this on the internet. For example, if I'm holding the tablet with two hands and reach away with one hand, the resulting pressure from holding the tablet with the other hand causes touches all over the screen, wreaking havoc on whatever I'm doing. It even happens if I push "too hard" e.g. when playing a game excitedly.
Do I have a particularly bad unit for this? Is there a way to fix or mitigate this?
As it is, I don't think I can keep it - it's just too frustrating to use. If I hold it lightly and with two hands it's fine, but anything else - there's a high probability of touches all over the screen, especially in the Back button area

Mine doesn't do it. Or I'm not holding it "incorrectly"
Can you link to/upload a video showing this behaviour? You may want to turn on developer options->show touches to get an idea of what touches the device sees.

I have the same problem as the original poster...
Bought mine today and was messing around with it. Then I noticed the tablet 'doing stuff on its own'. After a quick test I realised I could reproduce the error by holding it in landscape and twisting it slightly. This resulted in either the back button being activated (lower left corner activated / pushed) or the settings notification area popping up (lower right corner activated).
So I guess they should have used a stiffer material as the back cover. But then again it seems almost inconceivable that the testers wouldn't have encountered this issue, if it was universal... so I'm guessing that our units are faulty - sonofabitch!
At the same time its my very unqualified guess that it isn't something which can be fixed by new firmware.
Edit: Just thought of something ... perhaps thats why the UI of the new firmware has changed? No more 'buttons' in the lower corners (as far as Im aware).

I had these same issues with mine when i got it but the update did actually fix mine so its possible that, if you are on the 370 update, that yours is extra sensitive. I have done quite a few flex tests to try to make it happen again and just can't get it to repeat after the update.
I would contact either the place you bought it from if it is within the return/exchange policy or Sony and exchange it.

Im using 10.1.C.0.370 - tablet came with that installed.
For once I actually bought electronics in a physical store (5mins walk away) so I'll go there and get them to replace it - and also test their demo model.

The demo model had the same issues. It also seems the issue is quite widespread judging by the Xperia tablet Z support forum.

The same happens un my LTE 16Gb .244 black versión...
It happens ramdomly, above allí while attached to Power stock charger, but not always...
If Sony doesn't want us to unlock bootloaders and install other ROMs tan stock, why they release such a crappy firmware?
It also happens in my c6603 sometimes un the same conditions as my Tablet, so i think is firmware related
Sent from my C6603 using xda app-developers app

So that's what's happening
I am having the exact same issue, in fact I didn't realize it was the flexing that was causing the issue until I read this thread. Now I can reproduce it consistently. I am so bummed, I LOVE this tablet, Sony has a lot of great stuff they put into this tablet and the form factor is amazing. I am pretty disappointed though because this makes it pretty hard to use. I checked and I am running the latest firmware. For what they charge for this thing you would think it would be a better piece of hardware. Back to Best Buy I go I supposed.

Mine is doing it right now! And I'm not even holding it, it's Sat in its dock. Mostly on the right hand side of the screen and bottom right corner (in landscape mode)..kk
That capital S of sat, and the ..kk above was done by these ghost touches.

Oh, by the way, mine is on the UK generic feature 244 which I flashed with flashtool, I would go back to the original t-mobile 're, but the ftf I made before I flashed th 244 doesn't work. I would be most grateful if anyone here has a tab with the original t-mobile fw, and could make an ftf of it!

Which version of the fw are you guys using?
Sent from my SGP321 using Tapatalk 4

Spanish unbranded FW... Seems that the problem concentrates on navigation bar, but not only... I have the visible touches enabled on developer section of settings, and can see the ghosts...
Seems that i have to unlock my bootloader and flash CM10.1 or 10.2, and see if they exists as well...
BTW: Sometimes happens on lockscreen

Has anyone tried the 4.2.2 ota for the sgp311? (10.31.C.0.136)
Sent from my SGP311 using Tapatalk 4

Its really noticeable on 4.1.2 and 4.2.2?
It seems to be main reason to not buy this. ;/

My brand new Tablet Z running 4.2.2 is acting out aswell. When in portrait mode, it seems obsessed with ghost tapping home or return...
Edit: Turned screen "logging" on. Dammit, the screen goes haywire at just the tiniest bit of flexing - even when NOT flexing... Sigh.

I've gone back to the correct fw for mine and it's settled down a bit, it still does it now and then, but nowhere near as much as it used to.

I got my XTZ and it works just great! No ghost /phantom touches at all using stock 4.1.2 even when i move harder the tablet. I think everyone who experienced this should replace tablet with new.

Confirmed.
It happens when i flex he tablet.

Actually got my Tablet Z replaced at the Sony dealer, no questions asked. (Kudos for service!) For some reason the new tablet seems to be doing much better than the "old" one.

I got 5 of these in for our staff - 2 of them have the same issue.
Phantom button pressing happens when not even touching them! Going to try and swap these over..
Running 4.2.2 on black LTE version in Australia.

Xperia ray ui board with vibration

Hi guys and gals,
I posted that on q&a but went unnoticed. Just want to check if there is hope...
My primary microphone is gone (water damage). It sits on the "UI board with vibration" under the home button.
Could only find it in two online shops, but not in stock for a month.
Now the developement part: is there a way to make the secondary microphone default -as ti is I see it is only used with camera. -This is for the time I wait for the new part.
Anybody has access to a new part quicker than in a month? Will settle for a used one.

Only thing I found was a micswitch, and all it does is changes the a1026 value in build.prop -or ment to change it, doesnt quite work here. Gave me an idea though, so I changed it myself, but makes no difference.
Since the primary stopped working I hear myself in the speaker, comming from the secondary, but for some reason that sound from the secondary mic is not feed to the remote phone...

Ok, we'll try it from another angle.
Cant get the part anywhere. Its still on warranty, I kight send it off, but not sure I want to waste time.
Is there any warranty seals that I didnt see when stripping the bottom plastics? As in, will it show at the service that I opened the phone? Also, wil they see "water damage" as they usually see -I didnt see any traces.

Have you try to clean it with this: http://www.amazon.com/CRC-05103-Quick-Electronic-Cleaner/dp/B000BXOGNI
or a similar product?
Thanks, I think its the lowest price cleaner I seen. Localy at my usual electronics shop they go for about 20.
I havent really noticed any moisture residue. Got the phone stripped right after and "hair dryered".
I'm just wondering, have they got any fancy x-ray os such that would tell them anyway?

Every smartphone have a water indicator: i don't know where is in the ray,but is a small piece of special paper that change color when get water.
sorry fo r my english...

There is a water sticker on the battery and all over the insides of the phone. The bottom panel including. If even one of them is red, the warranty is not valid. My ray got dipped in water too, fortunately i managed to open it up and clean in fast enough, so no damage(except the lost warranty).
K, so I guess thre million dollar question now is where tyat sticker is oj ray. My phone only got the dipped to the top of home button (standing).
I'll chance it, since I cant find the replacement parts anywhere

Well, well well... just got the phone back from the shop. Warranty was a keeper and the Ray is fixed and good as new... or... as new. Lost root, toggles, and all the work done previously. On a bright - I can have fun doing it all over again and best of all - I don't have to rush unwinding the headset from the pocket just to answer the phone anymore.
Happy days.
Thank you Sony

Onex+ touch screen issue(we need to report for hotfix)

Ok, so me and another guy did some tests with the onex+ touch screen and found out why so many of us have issues with scrolling, we need as many people as possible to report the issue to HTC so we can get a hotfix, i dont think HTC realize at the moment, this is what to do, type in on th phone keypad *#*#3424#*#*. choose more, then choose the screen drawing option, dont draw, just touch it with your finger and see if there is a white dot, if there isnt then touch another part of the screen and then see if the previous touch shows up, if so you have the same software issue as many of us, its quite possible that its a major hardware flaw and cant be rectified in which case HTC will have to do mass repairs or recall, we are not going to stand for this at a price of £500, if you have this issue please report on HTC website, either email or chat or phone call, it needs to be done or we will have scrolling issues time and time again on each update.
What touch screen issue are you talking about? I've not heard anything about it from anyone on here. I think mine is fine. Or maybe I haven't noticed it yet.

Me and another guy discovered it, trying to sort out our scrolling problems, as of now theres an issue. 4 people have the exact same issue so far and i bet theres more.Test your screen and you will no for sure. Its causing random clicks and rubberbanding when scrolling, its not all the time and probably wouldnt notice it unless your a heavy user(always on your phone)
you have the same software issue as many of us, its quite possible that its a major hardware flaw

Yup, I noticed it too. It's gone now, since I switched over to CM10. It makes no sense! (See what I did there? )
I think I'm that other guy OP was talking about. I have this scrolling issue where stuff on screen are being selected or clicked on accidentally instead of scrolling though them - but never had this problem before I updated to the most recent firmware, so I'm pretty sure this is a software thing.
Best we could do right now is report to HTC.

Oh, so switching to a custom rom solves it. Must learn about those stuff then.
Had very similar problem on the sensation. Ended up being a bad ground. It was easy to fix because you could take the cover off. Small piece of aluminum foil or solder fixed it like new. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=17072026#post17072026
Also i assume you guys are talking about the international version..? Anyone with US ATT version experience this issue yet?
Rant: These forums need separating... Nothing is interchangeable between the two phones..

It would be nice to know if the problem shows its ugly head on the lte/4g versions, its def got to be reported, if its hardware they will have to recall or fix them, and they cant turn away people who are rooted or have custom roms if it hardware. Hi sharpshooterr, yes op is you, i couldnt remember your name untill i seen it lol. Same test on the onex with android 4.1.1 with sense 4+ shows the screen is perfect, theres not even any lag when drawing either. Things like this shouldnt be getting through quality control on high end flagship devices, really shows HTC is going down hill fast.
As of now i think your testing might be a little flawed, you are using the wrong test. This is a line draw test, not a touch test. Its liable to act the same for everyone when just touching. How does it draw for you? Draws fine for me. the thing about touching then touching again and both dots show is not any sort of test IMO because again this is a LINE DRAW test. Maybe download some of the touch and multitouch tests from the market and try those.
Dont get me wrong, if there is something wrong then it needs to be addressed. I applaud you for trying to bring it public. You should look into some other tests though. HTC will not pay any attention to this issue if its brought to them like this. Get some more info, more tests, different tests.. The more the merrier
With the information i've read here it does sound software related though.. custom roms can fix it and firmware updates can break it. Doesn't sound hardware to me.

Ok, ive tested the same drawing test screen on the onex, doesnt happen, soon as you touch the screen it registers under your finger, the screen has to register the first touch in that same spot your finger is on no matter what your doing, this is why its clicking in other places and rubber banding when your scrolling, its registering to late, and the line drawing lags like f---k. When your drawing your keeping your finger on it so its going to register eventually in the place you want it, its no good when your scrolling. Ive reproduced the same in gesture search, and again on the onex it doesnt do it in gesture search. Keep in mind there both running android 4.1.1 with 4+ sense, the only screen difference is the glass. If what your saying is true then the onex should be the same way so i know its not down to he test app along with the other tests ive done. Eitherway theres def a problem with scrolling.Your probably right about HTC not doing anything.EDIT: Ive decided to refund or sell it and carry on using the onex, it just seems faster, battery last longer.

With the exception of insert coin my phone is the same. I do not have this problem. Something is wrong with the rom, your kernel or your phone if you are having touch screen issues.
I am unlocked, running elegancia, rooted. I do not have TWRP flashed as there are issues charging when the battery dies. Even when i did I never had touch screen issues.
Multi touch is useless also, only 2 fingers register, on a brandnew high end device and it only supports 2 finger multitouch, oh yes, i have a touch screen app that actually registers a soon as you touch the screen, but its only one app, all others i tested do as i described so i really do not know what to think, its def not hardware, its down to the software, we should get 4.2.1 soon and hopefully it will be gone, as the op said, i dont think HTC will do anything, especially now i found an app that makes the touch work as it should. So, basically, dont worry to much, its not the hardware. Ive boxed my onex+ back up and im using the onex untill new OS, i might even flash stock nexus 4 OS on the onex.

To get the device to register more than 2 fingers go into settings -Display, gestures & buttons - turn off under gestures - HTC gestures (uncheck) this will give you up to 10 multitouch points.

wow absurd huh? I can confirm that it is NOT absurd and works the way he posted it... even if you hit show touches in development, and leave htc gestures checked, none of the multitouch testing apps pick up more than 2 touches... even though you can see more, they dont register as touches in apps and games.. So... in order to have the full 10 point multitouch, no matter how absurd you think it is, HTC gestures must be unchecked.. Google it

You misunderstand, I'm saying that it's absurd that boe323's saying the device can only support up to two touches and multi-touch is useless. Since you yourself said it will register up to 10 touches with the correct setting then it IS absurd that he claims it can only pick up two. Even the HTC gesture settings clearly says 3 finger-touches so that in itself made his statement of only two-touch support absurd.
It seems that you think I'm disagreeing with ihavoc, you should improve your reading comprehension.

Xperia p big problem with home button.

My xperia p home button is getting pressed backwards as well. Like if I rest my finger at the back of the home button then it gives feedback wtf? The home button works fine from the front as well. :S
There is no such problem with the back and menu key. What has gone wrong is it a hardware problem? Has anyone else experienced?

Actually seems like it can happen with any button. Just rub your finger at the back of the transparent strip and eventually a touch will be registered. I have a feeling this is not a hardware flaw but merely a ridiculous design flaw from Sony.
Can I please have more people who can try this? Maybe this was the way it is from the beginning and I just didn't notice it before as this phone hasn't been used much.

I've had a similar problem, exept it wasn't similar at all. I had haptic feedback enabled on the softkeys, but when I pressed a key, it vibrated twice. Doesn't happen in cyanogenmod, though. Sorry if I'm offtopic or something like that, I just feel like typing something (and raising my postcount so that I could post in the development forums).

I had to make an account just to reply to this when I was finding solutions on google. A bit late, but yes, i'm having the same problem too. I've only had it for a month as well and i'm starting to get really frustrated. The buttons on the transparent bar automatically 'responses' to itself. Don't know what's the problem. I can't lay my hand or hold it on the back of it either. It gets all 'spazzed' up.

I've only had it for a month as well and i'm starting to get really frustrated. The buttons on the transparent bar automatically 'responses' to itself. Don't know what's the problem. I can't lay my hand or hold it on the back of it either. It gets all 'spazzed' up.

Ya it does seem like a general problem with the xperia P, maybe some devices are more sensitive and some arent. I have just decided to live with it.

If there is no known solution, and you've already decided to live with it, why not buy a case for your xperia p? one that covers the back of the soft buttons. Without being able to touch it from the back, you won't have the problem again, and even forget about it.

I have just been careful these days and it doesnt always trigger the buttons from the back, its just very random. If the problem becomes impossible to live with then yes a cover is the solution.
Been with this phone for a couple of months and its still working fine...

I have same trouble with "menu" key. Silicone case not helped. Sorry for bad english.
Facing Home Button Issue
There is no such problem with the back and menu key. What has gone wrong is it a hardware problem? Has anyone else experienced?
The xperia p is just over a month old and this problem only happened recently.
"I am facing the same issue from the last 2 days, phone is just 2 weeks old(Brand new). Sometimes apps work fine, at time all of a sudden goes to home screen or all app open up as in I am continuously pressing Home button. What is the resolution for this? Can someone assist?"

I have two Xperia P (mine and my wife's). My wife has no problems with the phone. I have two months of use there was a problem with the key "Menu" (which is triggered randomly.) But I noticed that if you turn your phone off for a few days, the problem disappears temporarily. Maybe it's a hardware problem with overheating phone? (Sorry for my English, I used google translate )

Guys, I blocked "Menu" key and remap the "Focus" (short press on the "Camera") to the menu. So the problem is solved for me.
how did you remap it?
Because I have the same problemm since today.
Everything I tried results into nothing.
I just can't use the home button anymore.
That's really driving me crazy :silly:

vibration motor failure?

so I've unlocked my boot loader and am running the latest INFECTION rom by neo.
I've noticed, probably for the last couple months at least, that if my phone vibrates a lot (ex, in vibration mode, getting alerts a lot from instant message, or toggling vibration in status bar toggle back and forth), each time it gets weaker and weaker.
but after a while (possibly hours, could be less or more, Idk), it gets stronger. at least until it starts being used again, then it gets weaker as it is being used.
I've been running custom roms pretty much since I started using this phone, in November '12.
so the question, is this a hardware problem, or could it be fixed going back to stock?
if hardware, is replacing the motor a viable solution? is it soldered to the main board?
I appreciate any input on this matter, thanks!

it could be a couple of things...if this has been an ongoing thing since you started flashing last year...it may be roms as some have different haptic settings...but if its just very recent the hardware could be failing or it loosened itself outta the housing in the inside....i know a few people on here who have changed their motors and where they got it...its on either the rezound general, q&a, or accesorries thread

well I don't remember exactly when it started, but I remember realizing that the vibration would get weak if used too often. I suppose it happened all at once, but it might have been gradual, and I only just noticed it once it reached a certain threshold.
I'll see if I can find the threads you're talking about. but if you find them first, you could post them
Ya sounds like its hardware related...give me a little and I'll dig the links up for you...I'm in the process of packing as I'm moving over 3000 miles away from where I currently am on Saturday

thanks! looked on eBay and ordered one for less than $4, sounds like a straight forward install with only 6 screws.
it'll be nice to have reliable haptic feedback/silent notifications again.

I have experienced the same symptoms, and I'm running the stock Sense 3.6 ROM (rooted). But for me, it's on and off: it'll do this for a couple of days and then be fine for several weeks. I'm not worried about it anymore. At this point it's been going on for almost a year, I'd say, and vibration hasn't ever fully stopped working in all that time.
So that at least confirms that it's not ROM specific.

It's never come to a dead stop, it's just been extremely week at times.
I'm really hoping it's not the main board failing to supply the right power to the motor.
So what happened, the motor I got on eBay was DOA (tested it with strands of wire as probes). My old motor turned on at a couple volts, but the other one was completely dead. (Unfortunately I took my rez apart twice cause I expected it to work, lol).
I did a stupid thing I suppose, I tried to use my old motor's brushes on the new motor (after accidentally opening the broken one up and seeing it spun with my test leads). Long story short I ruined my original motor, so I have absolutely 0 haptic/vibration on my phone right now. Let me tell you, it's really annoying! (Especially pressing back )
Well I got a refund from the seller and bought a new one yesterday but it won't be shipped till Monday.

Thanks again! Just got a new motor installed and it works great! (It's crazy awesome to have haptic feedback again)
I bought one for the HTC amaze 4g, and cut off the connector and soldered my old one on. Put some heat shrink on it and installed it, and that did the trick. Good thing there's a little bit of extra room under the back cover!

Can we really fix the touchscreen issues?

Like many other ZU owners i'm experiencing phantom touches now and then. My culprit is for example some dirt, like a fingerprint, on the screen. If I clean it the issue is gone for a while.
I'm convinced this is a software issue, and I've read at several places about other users with the same idea.
I've found some tips, like tweaking the touch pressure scale in clearpad idc and the touch filter level in max1187x_pen_0.idc but nothing seems to completely fix the problem.
So, I would like to know if someone made some more digging?
There is one file which loads the touchscreen firmware at boot called pre_hw_config.sh
It loads the touchscreen drivers in /sys/devices/virtual/input
Can we find something here?
The firmware version of the touchscreen drivers can be found at:
/sys/devices/virtual/input/max1187x/few_ver
I'm on:
fw_ver (1.4.13) chip_id (0x75)
config_id (0x0010) customer_info[1:0] (0xFFFF, 0xFFFF)
Are you on a more recent firmware without issues?
If you feel for joining me in the search for a fix please do so,
Thanks

I had those problems too, but since i removed (it takes a lot of time because it is glued :X) the screenprotector, the problems are gone.
When i used another screenprotector, the isues returned. So now I work on the glass, and have no isues at all.
I don't want to remove this as I think it's glued for a reason.
But if there's no other way to solve the touchscreen issue I might consider it

Your config_id is 10 while mine's 12.
Can't say I have any serious cases of phantom touching.

This is interesting. I suppose we're on the exact same hardware but with different config. If there is any way to upgrade this config I want to know. Will do some searching.

I get this too. I have to keep my screen really really clean. The false touches tend to be nearer the home button. When it starts to happen I quickly press power/sleep and clean the screen, because it can cause chaos!
I too think it can be tuned in software, because I rarely experienced phantom touches when I first got my XZU on Jellybean 4.2; it started becoming a lot worse and the only reason I can ascribe is the upgrade to Jellybean 4.3.
I only just took the plunge and upgraded to KK/4.4.2, so it will be interesting to see whether it solves the problem.
