Can we really fix the touchscreen issues? - Sony Xperia Z Ultra

Like many other ZU owners i'm experiencing phantom touches now and then. My culprit is for example some dirt, like a fingerprint, on the screen. If I clean it the issue is gone for a while.
I'm convinced this is a software issue, and I've read at several places about other users with the same idea.
I've found some tips, like tweaking the touch pressure scale in clearpad idc and the touch filter level in max1187x_pen_0.idc but nothing seems to completely fix the problem.
So, I would like to know if someone made some more digging?
There is one file which loads the touchscreen firmware at boot called pre_hw_config.sh
It loads the touchscreen drivers in /sys/devices/virtual/input
Can we find something here?
The firmware version of the touchscreen drivers can be found at:
/sys/devices/virtual/input/max1187x/few_ver
I'm on:
fw_ver (1.4.13) chip_id (0x75)
config_id (0x0010) customer_info[1:0] (0xFFFF, 0xFFFF)
Are you on a more recent firmware without issues?
If you feel for joining me in the search for a fix please do so,
Thanks

I had those problems too, but since i removed (it takes a lot of time because it is glued :X) the screenprotector, the problems are gone.
When i used another screenprotector, the isues returned. So now I work on the glass, and have no isues at all.

I don't want to remove this as I think it's glued for a reason.
But if there's no other way to solve the touchscreen issue I might consider it

Your config_id is 10 while mine's 12.
Can't say I have any serious cases of phantom touching.

This is interesting. I suppose we're on the exact same hardware but with different config. If there is any way to upgrade this config I want to know. Will do some searching.

I get this too. I have to keep my screen really really clean. The false touches tend to be nearer the home button. When it starts to happen I quickly press power/sleep and clean the screen, because it can cause chaos!
I too think it can be tuned in software, because I rarely experienced phantom touches when I first got my XZU on Jellybean 4.2; it started becoming a lot worse and the only reason I can ascribe is the upgrade to Jellybean 4.3.
I only just took the plunge and upgraded to KK/4.4.2, so it will be interesting to see whether it solves the problem.

[Q] Flex and ghost/phantom touches

I just bought a SGP311 (US Wifi 32G). When researching what tablet to buy, I did see some reference to phantom screen touches when flexing the screen, but I think the video said it was cleared up by firmware updates.
Mine is running .370, which I understand to be the newest available for the SGP311 (25 Aug 2013).
I find the phantom touches so sensitive and terrible that I can't believe there is not more stink about this on the internet. For example, if I'm holding the tablet with two hands and reach away with one hand, the resulting pressure from holding the tablet with the other hand causes touches all over the screen, wreaking havoc on whatever I'm doing. It even happens if I push "too hard" e.g. when playing a game excitedly.
Do I have a particularly bad unit for this? Is there a way to fix or mitigate this?
As it is, I don't think I can keep it - it's just too frustrating to use. If I hold it lightly and with two hands it's fine, but anything else - there's a high probability of touches all over the screen, especially in the Back button area
Mine doesn't do it. Or I'm not holding it "incorrectly"
Can you link to/upload a video showing this behaviour? You may want to turn on developer options->show touches to get an idea of what touches the device sees.
I have the same problem as the original poster...
Bought mine today and was messing around with it. Then I noticed the tablet 'doing stuff on its own'. After a quick test I realised I could reproduce the error by holding it in landscape and twisting it slightly. This resulted in either the back button being activated (lower left corner activated / pushed) or the settings notification area popping up (lower right corner activated).
So I guess they should have used a stiffer material as the back cover. But then again it seems almost inconceivable that the testers wouldn't have encountered this issue, if it was universal... so I'm guessing that our units are faulty - sonofabitch!
At the same time its my very unqualified guess that it isn't something which can be fixed by new firmware.
Edit: Just thought of something ... perhaps thats why the UI of the new firmware has changed? No more 'buttons' in the lower corners (as far as Im aware).

I had these same issues with mine when i got it but the update did actually fix mine so its possible that, if you are on the 370 update, that yours is extra sensitive. I have done quite a few flex tests to try to make it happen again and just can't get it to repeat after the update.
I would contact either the place you bought it from if it is within the return/exchange policy or Sony and exchange it.

Im using 10.1.C.0.370 - tablet came with that installed.
For once I actually bought electronics in a physical store (5mins walk away) so I'll go there and get them to replace it - and also test their demo model.
The demo model had the same issues. It also seems the issue is quite widespread judging by the Xperia tablet Z support forum.
The same happens un my LTE 16Gb .244 black versión...
It happens ramdomly, above allí while attached to Power stock charger, but not always...
If Sony doesn't want us to unlock bootloaders and install other ROMs tan stock, why they release such a crappy firmware?
It also happens in my c6603 sometimes un the same conditions as my Tablet, so i think is firmware related
Sent from my C6603 using xda app-developers app
So that's what's happening
I am having the exact same issue, in fact I didn't realize it was the flexing that was causing the issue until I read this thread. Now I can reproduce it consistently. I am so bummed, I LOVE this tablet, Sony has a lot of great stuff they put into this tablet and the form factor is amazing. I am pretty disappointed though because this makes it pretty hard to use. I checked and I am running the latest firmware. For what they charge for this thing you would think it would be a better piece of hardware. Back to Best Buy I go I supposed.

Mine is doing it right now! And I'm not even holding it, it's Sat in its dock. Mostly on the right hand side of the screen and bottom right corner (in landscape mode)..kk
That capital S of sat, and the ..kk above was done by these ghost touches.

Oh, by the way, mine is on the UK generic feature 244 which I flashed with flashtool, I would go back to the original t-mobile 're, but the ftf I made before I flashed th 244 doesn't work. I would be most grateful if anyone here has a tab with the original t-mobile fw, and could make an ftf of it!

Spanish unbranded FW... Seems that the problem concentrates on navigation bar, but not only... I have the visible touches enabled on developer section of settings, and can see the ghosts...
Seems that i have to unlock my bootloader and flash CM10.1 or 10.2, and see if they exists as well...
BTW: Sometimes happens on lockscreen

Its really noticeable on 4.1.2 and 4.2.2?
It seems to be main reason to not buy this. ;/
My brand new Tablet Z running 4.2.2 is acting out aswell. When in portrait mode, it seems obsessed with ghost tapping home or return...
Edit: Turned screen "logging" on. Dammit, the screen goes haywire at just the tiniest bit of flexing - even when NOT flexing... Sigh.
I've gone back to the correct fw for mine and it's settled down a bit, it still does it now and then, but nowhere near as much as it used to.

Actually got my Tablet Z replaced at the Sony dealer, no questions asked. (Kudos for service!) For some reason the new tablet seems to be doing much better than the "old" one.
I got 5 of these in for our staff - 2 of them have the same issue.
Phantom button pressing happens when not even touching them! Going to try and swap these over..
Running 4.2.2 on black LTE version in Australia.

Experiencing random clicks and lags.

Get to XZU today. First experience is about some light lags..
the model is the eu C6833 with FW .532
lags are not so terrible, but facing like my Xperia Z (standard, not Z1) i notice some less lagging into Z (C6603)...and thats curious, because i read around that the Ultra has no lags at all! So i was quite suprised..
Even during the startup, starting both phones, can be noticed on the Z standard the coloured stripes passing in a much more smooth way... instead on the Ultra.. they are quite lagging some... i know, that means nothing. I just asking about other experiences..
But, another problem, and this is not just a lag feeling... while using the phone (the ULTRA)... occasionally it shots here and there some clicks... is not happening continuous... just it may happen a couple of time in one hour.. for example.. while i am tiping.. just some character jumps out.. and maybe the keyboard goes away..then suddenly return after 1 or 2 seconds.. quite weird..
Also.. i figured that may be a common problem related to youthness of firmware?
I got the device today.. so, i may return it for replacement to the store asap, if i figure that may have some defects.
Suggestions?
MANY THANKS!
The current firmware is not even close to being bug free, so weird stuff will happen, but if you can't live with it i would get a replacement and hope for the best. It's all software bugs though, so you might end up with a new device that's similar to the one you have now.
Sent from my Z Ultra, using XDA Premium 4
ah well..its ok i can wait.. i just was not sure if was a software youthness defect, or a hardware defect. That may be quite different, because after a week i can not return the phone to the store, so if a hardware issue came out, i would have to send the device for service and wait "who knows how long" to get it back...(and maybe, having the problem still there..)
I'm not experiencing any lag, but my screen is more sensitive after i updated from 510 to 532, which is a thing that i don't like, and it results in a couple of random taps that i don't want. This showed up for me after the 532 update, so it's a software bug. One thing i would do if i were you is to use the diagnosis tool (Settings->About) and test everything and see if there are any hardware defects; just to be sure.
I'm thinking either the screen is overly sensitive to your inputs or you might have had it connected to a charger at the same time?
Depending on the quality of the charger, this can play havoc with a capacitive screen and I have noticed odd behaviour on cheaper chargers since getting my first capacitive screen phone and almost every device I have had since can exhibit this behaviour, XZU included.

Is your C6833 from one of the carriers, which might have bloatware (a possible reason) , or is it contract-free standard Sony?
Your comment about the boot up image caught my eye. The purple wave/swoosh at bootup really lagged on my C6802 when I used backup/restore to go back to previous settings with different firmware. A clean re-install solved all of it.

Oh no i never use devices while keeping connected...btw the xzu..is supplied with original charger...i see no reason to use a cheap blotty charger with it.. I guess you are right about oversensitivity..i applied a film protection on the screen and i am noticing much less random clicks...
But i sm still evaluating the return policy of my store..to go and get another one.. Just dont want to lose time if this are software issues..

The Diagnosis tools, reported all "OK" except the flash. I guest because there's no flash..
I just repeat. That lags are not aggressive.. but the refresh is quite far from that i've seen in youtube reviews.. i would say, same performance like Xperia Z.. and that's nonsense because one is Snap600 at 1.5ghz and XZU Snap800 a 2.2ghz so, it MUST be, more reactive..
AnTuTu v4, reported 34000 anyway. And the reliability test passed.

[Q] Hard or software?

Hey guys,
Ive been using my ZU for a week now, and love it.
Only noticed one thing, sometimes when the phone is just with screen on, it will open apps and do random stuff on itself. (without touching the screen myself.)
I dont know if this is software related, or that my hardware is defective.
Anyone has any experience on this?
Kind regards,
Hoolz
Yeah, that's the so called "ghost clicking". It usually happens if you have some dirt on the screen. It was a bigger issue on pre-257 firmwares, so Sony has made thing better for most people by updating, so it's mostly a software issue.

[NOT-A-FIX] Possible touchscreen issues fix

Edit: these modifications below sometimes help a little bit but DOES NOT FIX ANYTHING
 @devs please close this thread.
Hi,
just found a thread at sony about the touchscreen issues. Since that post also references some XDA-Threads I guess it has been published before in some other Xperia threads, but I did not searched for it.
I tested this running stock Xperia ROM (.402) and also CM11 and these issues are gone for me. The touchscreen is much more responsive now and I never noticed that complete touch freeze again.
What's about your device? Does this fix help?
Note: You need root to apply this fix!
Change these two lines in /system/usr/idc/clearpad.idc
R/W-Mount /system (mount -o remount,rw /system)
In /system/usr/idc/clearpad.idc change the values of
touch.pressure.scale to 0.001 (original value: 0.1)
Code:
touch.pressure.scale = 0.0001
touch.filter.level (original value: 2)
Code:
touch.filter.level = 1
reboot

This is hasenbein1966's suggested fix, unfortunately didn't seem to make a difference to me. But then again, I don't have the issue where the screen completely freezes, only occasional unregistered touches and some glitchy two-finger gestures, when the tablet is resting on a stand or some other surfaces.

Thanks for the hint!
According to this I searched a little bit and found another thread from hasenbein1966 on the german Android-Forum
There he reports that this TS issue is gone when he replaced the library in /system/lib/touchfilter/tftype.so with one from the Z1.
The complete thread is in german but google translate can do the (or tell me the #msg and I'll translate it for you if it's not too much
I didn't tried it since my Z2 is currently @home, but I think it's worth a try if the issue ever comes back to me.

Just tried the tftype4.so fix and while it doesn't fix the touch issue 100%, I definitely do see a noticeable improvement.
Update: never mind, the touch screen just went back to its usual behavior. The improvement was probably purely due to rebooting.
Update 2: yup, just got the same temporary post-reboot improvement after restoring the backup of the original touch filter file.
I suppose I will just wait until they finally start to roll-out that latest certified firmware, and see if that brings any improvement. But I don't have my hopes high since it's obviously a grounding issue, which of course is hardware-based.
I tried the "fix" involving the clearpad.idc changes, too.
It did not fix anything, I regret.
Touchscreen response is still a pain in the you-know-where.
Haha, this whole touchscreen thing is bordering on hocus-pocus...
Yes, I suggested this "fix" here weeks ago because it seemed to improve the issue back in the days when I still had the .36 firmware.
It wast just a suggestion for people to try it, I didn't claim it to be a definitive "fix" or so.
Meanwhile I had to reset the clearpad.idc values to 0.1 and 2, because annoyingly the tablet often recognized double taps when I only tapped once which made, for instance, inputting passwords nearly impossible. Now I haven't this problem anymore, so obviously clearpad.idc DOES make a difference - it's only mysterious what clearpad.idc values really do, there is no documentation available anywhere.
The touch screen is also rather dependent on weather - here in Germany it's now hot and humid, and touchscreen operation, especially with greasy hands, is less reliable than in cooler, drier weather.

[Q] Touch issues

Hello imusing the 23.0.1.A.4.44 version for my 511 device, and im experiencing an issue with the touch input.
Specifically, while i drag things round, the system will decide to drop em. The problem aleviatesby alot if i use extra pressure on the screen but its not something that comes naturally on this device.is there some sor4 of configuration that will let me add some touch sensitivity and hopefully fix the problem.
I'm looking at buying this tablet and want to know if the touch problems has been fixed in firmware updates?
Sort of. It's better but not always perfect. I just had the worst touch screen issues just then, solved for now with a reboot. First reboot in a couple of months mind you. It's worse in the charging stand
