Root method for Bell I527M - Samsung Galaxy Mega

I tried this and it worked for my Bell Mega, don't know if the same as AT&T but probably is. TRY AT OWN RISK

He was probably successful because the Bell device is not "protected" from running unsigned boot.img and recovery.img like the Att device is.
It may not be "protected" against writing a custom system image but it is not clear to me how to dump the stock one in order to modify it.

Big, when you tried rooting, what happened? Did Odin fail or did it just not change anything?

It failed. I also tried rooting through ADB.

I tried with Odin also and it just said FAIL. I have an unlocked Mega and an AT&T Mega and I tried all of these root methods. I also tried SuperOneClick and Motochopper just for the hell of it and those didn't work either.

There is this model SGH-i527. The i527M is made specially for Bell, it's normal not on Sammobile:

I just tried Motochopper that works on any model using Snapdragon 600. It failed but it did install a non working superuser so it might be close.
It works on the S4. If it could be made to work with ours would be great. It's a very easy install...don't even have to go into download mode.

That doesn't work on the S4 after the MF3 update. However, there is this:
http://galaxys4root.com/galaxy-s4-root/how-to-root-for-verizon-galaxy-s4-on-build-vruame7/
Which I have been meaning to try on my AT&T Mega, since it is running a very similar software build.

Fails on the device detection. I527 not supported.

Yup, fails on detection. This is very frustrating.

Damn, but you know, if the S4 can be rooted, the i527 can also.
I don't really care about the ROMs so much, because I have flashed so many and still have other devices I can play with. But, I would like to root to delete all of the ATT stuff that I will never use and is taking up space.
Keep the faith....it will come.

Agreed. I can live without custom ROMs for now. I just want root so I can delete bloatware and restore my Titanium Backup.

I think you would be better off trying the At&t S4 root . Rather than Verizon root.

If I had to guess I would say it wouldn't work for going back to stock or if it does you may have issues. May work for the alternate restore but not sure.

Trips your flash counter! Also a higher risk of bricks if the ROM builder goofed up.

Long as it is a completely stock image it won't. I don't think the route 66 version does either
Won't brick your device long as it is a .tar.md5 file or you make sure MD5 matches. Should be a tar.md5 file though.

It also blocked the mdk kernel. And I believe it included a new bootloader which blocked the loki patch as well. Could be wrong about the 2nd part.

I didn't buy it outright, I stole an upgrade from a dumbphone line on my plan in order to keep my unlimited data. They only offer the consumer edition from vzw. Plus, I believe there is no warranty at all for a dev edition, and it only comes in 16gb. 32gb needed!

It (hopefully soft) bricks it. ODIN will "Fail!" and your phone will reject the foreign organism, requiring you to flash a stock ROM to recover.
Oh, and probably setting the warranty void flag in the process.
Apparently you're not aware of the fact that the Verizon Galaxy S4 is NOT the same hardware as the Sprint Galaxy S4.
I was not. I find that interesting though. Similar LTE band. Do you know what differences there are?

The tar file for Odin cannot be used to downgrade due to bootloader. Much like the ruu on most HTC phones won't allow a downgrade due to locks in the bootloader.

Yep....your only option would be safestrap and a few roms compatible to run with it.
safestrap enabled, Hyperdrive driven
Or root and clean it up. I did even though I hate stock. TW and Sense are both horrible. VZW and carriers make it worse with the bloat. Root, delay and freeze. I even deleted VZW apk files so I didn't have to worry about them running. I'm on straight talk though, so I wouldn't need them anyway.

Bought used, rooted S4. Am I unlocked?

Before I get people in here looking to "flame a noob", please leave me alone if that is your intention. If you genuinely are a helpful person, please read on.
I came from an unlocked s3 before I purchased a phone from Swappa and it is rooted and works fine. However, it has a pink theme and I am not into it. Additionally, I want to upgrade the rom if possible.
The issue is that I don't know if I need safestrap or of it has an unlocked bootloader. The reason why is from what I have read, the mj7 baseband is locked down. However, the phone seems to be running a custom kernel, which from what I have read is not possible on a locked down version. Is it possible that the baseband is just the one used by the custom rom?
Is there a definitive way to know if I can install roms without safestrap?
Thanks for your help!

Install phone info app from play store. If you don't see any reference to mdk...then you have a locked bootloader and can only use safestrap
sent by safestrap powered echo v26
I'm no pro, but I think having that kernel means that you have a mdk phone. I guess you should still check with "samsung phone info" and take a look at the bootloader part. You might be a lucky man
