I am using Link2SD, i LOVE IT!!!! However, when I make a backup of my ROM, my recovery doesn't see the 2nd partition, I'm using 4ext from Recovery, or Obackup for making a live backup. Anyone have any experience in this area? I wanna try other ROMs but be able to flash back to my current ROM if I want to....but if I can't make a backup of the partition where I linked many of my apps to.. I may have a problem

Yeah I'm not talking about installing apps I was using on a new ROM, I'm talking about being able to create a backup that INCLUDES the partition being used by Link2SD. As it is right now 4ext recovery is not seeing that partition and I'm not sure why. Neither is OBackup.

because I need more space on my phone's internal storage.
http://www.link2sd.info/
it is not the same as using the Android "move to SD" that is built in. what it does is after you create a second partition on your SD card, it makes your phone think it's part of it's internal storage, thus allowing you to install an ungodly amount of apps It uses sim-linking, if I'm correct. Check out the site it will give you more info. I love it. I made the second partition with GPARTED on a linux box. I may try doing it from recovery but I will have to wipe my entire sdcard for that and I didn't want to have to do that. I can test it with another sdcard and see if the new partition created is able to be used by link2sd then also backed up by the recovery. I'll have to check that out.

Yes, I understand..
I have not used sd2link since the Htc Desire(which was very low memory) and Desire HD2 (windows/android)...
I find now, that most app's/apk's now use the sdcard
and a app like app2sd keeps you informed
Ext3 or Ext4 must be used for Ext.
More common way of increasing memory is to swap internal with a ext4 on a fast sd card.:victory:
None of this, probably, is no help to you...
If you are rooted, you could use Titanium
Hope some of this helps .... Good luck

Hey guys!
Just thought this would be handy for anybody with higher-class SD cards.
Keep in mind that I did NOT create the data2ext script, and BlaY0 from Legend forum was the one who came up with it in his roms, so kudos to him for making it
NOTE: a2ext and data2ext, choose ONE. You cannot run them together.
What is data2ext?
Similar to a2ext, where data/app were stored inside your ext partition of the SD card, data2ext stores the whole /data inside your ext partition.
What does that mean?
That means your internal storage will barely be used, and because nowadays higher-class SD cards runs faster than your internal memory, your phone will be able to crank out some insane benchmarks.
Requirements?
1. A good sd card with ext2/ext3 partition. suggested with at least 512MB of it (but not over 2GB, otherwise trouble will arise)
2. For now I think this will only work on the CM7 nightlies. I'll make one for CM6 if it is ever needed.
Instructions?
1. Flash it
2. Make your ext2 block size 4kb (done so by doing adb shell mke2fs -m0 -b4096 /dev/block/mmcblk0p2)
3. Go to your terminal emulator/adb shell to type data2ext --enable
4. Reboot
5. Wait some time. Files will be copied over, so the reboot will be slow.
6. Go check your storage and see how much you got
Since I was unable to run quadrant from cm7, here's the bench results done w/ 3rdsense:

Enjoy.
Ha, nice. I was waiting for something like this. Now I have a new ROM, new kernel, and new extension to play with. Gonna be a fun night. Thanks ^_^
I must say, this was the thing I was waiting for the first time I rooted my phone so long ago.
I thank you good sir, assuming this works
It works just fine, I scored a 1641 on CM7 with miguel's new kernel OCed at 864.

What matters is your sd card class, and the ext partition.
if i have s-off (if its needed) how can I put that command into terminal emulator??

haha alright didnt know if it would be same command. Im very tired, dont laugh
didnt work in terminal emu. "/dev/block/mmcblk0p2 is apparently in use by the system, will not make a filesystem here!"
also: just confirming that a wipe from recov wont mess with the data on our SD's right?
No it won't wipe SD data, you could try just a normal reboot, make sure nothing's using it. You could also go into recovery and enable data2ext from adb.

thanks but that doesnt help me. that error prevents me from doing anything with this. also, i said i dont want to set up adb. never use it and dont have time now.
also, obviously its being used by having a2sd?
Yes a2sd is the reason, disable it, enable data2ext and you'll still have a2sd since apps are stored in /data, which will be on your sdcard.

If anyone has trouble installing A2EXT or A2SD, or simply don't have an SD card class 9000! then S2E is for you.
S2E is an application .apk you download from the Android Market, set what you want to go on your SD card, and that's IT!
No scripts, no errors.. no hassle.
::Note:: You must have your SD card partitioned.. which you can do with "Rom Manager"

Ooh I remember this.

Just reporting back with my results......
Works Perfectly!!!! Thank you again!
This is on the latest nightly (#142 - Android 2.3.5 O.C. to 844Mhz)
I started using this on both my N1 and my Slide about 3 months ago. Never a problem. DT is buggy and seems to be in perpetual beta development. Good post OP.

Has anyone gone from one nightly to another with this? Did it stick?
Hi all. I've partitioned my SD card using rom manager with a 512 mb ext partition and a 30 mb swap vol, yet when I got to S2E, I see no space on my ext partition. Any special changes that I need to do to the settings in the app or something else I might be missing? Thanks.

This is kinda strange...try partitioning straight from the recovery menu, I used ClockworkMod 3.0.0.5 and it worked great (I like this version because you can manually adjust how big you want the ext partition while ROM Manager and ClockworkMod 2.5.0.7 only let you go up to 512 mb)
Thanks guys, for some reason Rom Manager hadn't actually partitioned the whole thing. It made my regular sd partition smaller and left what would be the ext partition and swap patition sizes alone. It just didn't create them. So I erased my sd card and retried to partition through rom manager and it worked. I'm on 2.5.0.7.
Glad it is working for you, it is a great app.
had the partition on my card already, but never got around to using it - found the scripts to be too much. this was EASY AS PIE! however, my apps was only 17mb. my davlik cache was 64mb, so that was nice to move. i've now got 100mb free. i was able to reload some apps i recently removed because i was hovering ~15-20mb. this is surely a great app

I'm having the same issue, partition with RM and the only option here is download cache on S2E
I've tried searching this issue with no luck, surprisingly! I thought it would be more common.
Anyway, when I boot up my Nexus One, it takes <Sandlot>FOR-EVV-ERRR</Sandlot> to mount my SD card. I've got most of my apps on that card, so it's super annoying!
Like I've said, I've got a bunch of apps (40?) loaded on to this card, a few documents, 4 CDs... random stuff. I haven't formatted the card in a looong time... nor have I wiped the phone in a loooong time. I am a crackflasher - I flash a new ROM every day, but I VERY RARELY have issues, so that's why I haven't wiped in so long. This is really the only issue I have, and, if somebody knows the command, I would be happy to just mount the SD manually through the terminal when I need it to.
The phone is a Nexus One. I'm running a CM7.1(or whatever it is) based ROM and kernel. The SD card is the 16gig one that came with the phone.
Any help is appreciated!
Billy
Cliffnotes: What's the terminal command to mount the SD card to the phone? So the ROM can access it?
Ok, so I guess I diagnosed this issue... after rebooting my phone and waiting for my apps to become available I was able to, through the settings menu, view the space used/available on the SD card. Sooo... it is mounted? And the delay is just Android loading the apps from the SD card? How can I speed that up?
Thanks,
Billy

You increase the read/write speed by increasing the SD card cache size. You can use an SD speed boost app to do so easily, there are a couple on the market. There's also a script that you can run.
I had a similar issue. I've been running the same rom for over six months, and initially just flashed updates over the existing version and only wiped caches. I'd strongly recommend that you go ahead and perform a full wipe. It may seem like a pain, but I am 95%, certain that it will fix your issue. Just backup your apps & data with Titanium Backup and after you've completely wiped & flashed your new rom only restore what you need. Weeding out unused apps should speed up your phone as well. You can always restore them if you need them.

"Other" is anything on internal storage that doesn't fit the description of the other categories. The ROM alone is probably a GB or more. Also did you make a Titanium backup, or nandroid? Those take up storage, also.
I like to keep a known good ROM or nandroid (but not both, as that is excessive) on internal storage or removable SD, in case anything goes wrong I can restore with one of those (although you can pretty easily get it on the phone or SD if needed, so its just for convenience). But aside from that, its not necessary to keep the ROM zip.

Did you outright delete the nandroid, or at least move/copy to your computer or SD first? You have 17 GB free, so unless you make a copy, discarding backup data for the sake of unneeded space seems like a poor trade-off.
Do you understand that flashing a ROM does not wipe the internal storage? So anything you saved there before the flash is still there. Unless you choose the option in recovery to wipe storage, which will then of course cause you to lose any personal data stored there (backups, photos, etc.).

There are various apps to look at storage, but I find that one to have a cool and useful interface:

It visually shows you how much space a folder is taking up, and you can then tap on it to drill down.

Wow this a really nice app. Thanks for being so patient with me I really appreciate it. I'm not a brand new android user but when I had one before my ex took care of all the stuff like this. That's why I'm still needing help in some areas because I switched back to iPhone after my my touch 4g.
Can I delete the ROM file that I downloaded since I already flashed the ROM?

No worries, we were all beginners at one time. For the most part, just passing on what I've learned here; and the coolest thing about XDA is that its a community where members help each other. In fact I only came across that Disk Usage app after another XDA user suggested it.
