[Q] IMEI changed to 004999010640000 - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey everyone,
I recently flashed a ROM on my girlfriend's phone and due to an issue with the messaging app not working I decided to flash the ROM on top (the ROM had an option within the Aroma installer to change the messaging app whilst removing the previous one).
When I rebooted the device I realised that the phone had no signal. I checked the thread and found that the fix was to flash the same ROM again, wiping data, etc but to choose a different modem.
That didn't help so after searching some more on the thread people were mentioning that I should restore the EFS. I had made a backup previously so I used to restore the EFS using EFS Pro.
Upon a reboot I discovered that the IMEI had changed to 004999010640000 and the phone can only make emergency calls.
I have checked many threads regarding the changed IMEI and I have tried many of the fixes but to no avail. I have fully restored the phone to stock, tried many different modems and have tried restoring the EFS using different methods.
Does anyone have any ideas regarding any further methods I could attempt to restore the IMEI?
Thank you.

Follow the link in my signature to general sticky roll-up. Then read "Imei / efs - know this stuff". This includes everything you can do and the last option is send for repair. If you have already tried everything in that thread, send for repair.

Some people say to try to extract efs folder
Delete content of the existing one and copy paste the backup onto the folder and reboot solved their issues

Thank you so much! After reading the sticky (apologies for not viewing it before but I wasn't aware of it's existence), I found out what the issue was and sorted it out within minutes.
For others that might have the same issue as me, when I restored the EFS backup I did actually solve the issue, the problem was that I was on the wrong baseband due to when I restored to stock.
Flashing the Aroma baseband package (which can be found in the sticky) after restoring my EFS backup resolved the problem.

After reading the sticky (apologies for not viewing it before but I wasn't aware of it's existence),
Was that due to it being hidden or some other problem .
Its no good us telling users to read the basics if they cannot find them .

Tried with a few phones and currently my S3 does not work. Been trying all the fixes (u name it i ve tried) last 2 days, driving me mad, my phones goes from 000049 imei to original( serial no.intact) depending on which modem i flash it still don't connect to my network. Was able to save my Note 2 in one go. Why is it that only Samsung phones have this problem, SDS, lost of imei etc, still think the best phone to play around with is LG ( can purposely brick the phone n revive it :laugh tho its not very popular. My fav is still HTC

Samsung galaxy S2 EFS Folder

I have a Samsung Galaxy S II with lost IMEI & unknown baseband, ( the source of such a problem usually is the corruptness of the efs folder or missing ), My question is if the efs folder is missing would it be possible to use another backup from another backup of the efs folder from different S2 and edit in the details needed?
You can restore from your backed up EFS folder .
Or search XDA >>> EFS will find a number of posts and some fixes .

Hi mate, I don't have a backup of the folder so can't restore
no, you can not use a efs from another phone as the imei is unique to each phone. you would end up bricking it.
You need to send it in for reflashing with specialized tools which will rebuilds your efs folder.
I have the same problem here.. any idea how to rebuild the efs folder?

Cant understand why people do not make a backup of the EFS. If they all took the time to read the stickies, they would know how important this is. Learn to walk before you start to run.

That's assuming they indeed read the stickies, of course.
Reading
Read Stickies is important, but sometimes there are procedures that don't work well, or as expected, so problems like this will appear and they must have a solution.
restore with a backup folder!
You may not of personally made a backup but a lot of roms and kernels do it for you automatically, so you may have one or more backups and not even know it.
Check if you have one in /data/.siyah if you have used said kernel.
Check your sdcard for any made by roms they usually make a folder named something like efs_backup
Last I looked in addition to the backup I made 5 minutes after buying the phone I have 20+ made from each rom upgrade.
Hi, I'm new to rooting etc. Is it too late to backup an efs folder after I rooted the phone but have done nothing else?

As long as your EMS folder is intact and IMEI is correct, its not too late. There are a number of apps and programs to backup your imei. Ktool is one of the best and simplest to use. Also try EFS pro.

Mate when people buy a phone, they don't expect that their phone's EFS will get meshed up. In my case I have Galaxy S and my wife has Galaxy S2. She has been using her phone for year and half, no major problem. Last week it suddenly lost the network connection. I tried different SIM but still no good and started searching to resolve the issue and I found how to access IMEI. It was empty. She didn't do anything, no new apps installed. Mobile service provider can't help..

Hi everybody i'm new here i have a problem with my phone,my phone is rooted, 1 month ago i had this problem that my phone would not boot stay on samsung logo,i rebooted in recovery and say EFS failed,so i connected my phone to odin flashed a couple of roms but nothing worked, i saw that there was an option EFS clear so i did that but did not work either so i reflashed a rom and this time it worked but when it booted it didn't even ask me to enter PIN for sim and i noticed in about device there was no baseband and no network signal please help guys i would appreciate thanks.

HELP

I'm just wondering if anybody may have any suggestions as to what I could do to get my phone working again.
I bought my GSIII, in a slightly used condition from a shop and everything was working fine, but I didn't have to bother rooting it as it was already done.
I tried to flash Omega v19 and like an idiot I never made a note of which modem it was using before flashing.
Now I can't seem to get any signal whatsoever, I just get a circle with a line through it instead, although using some modems I can get some sort of signal but can't register on any network.
I've tried quite a few different modems, but can't seem to get any joy, I didn't realize I would need to be so exact with what modem I use, I know some can have a better signal than others, but one of them should work.
I've even tried flashing Samsung Firmware, but still the same Circle with a line through it.
I had the phone for one day and already wrecked it...
I not sure if the phone maybe a polish phone, because some polish TMobile apps and a polish GPS program, after a factory reset, but I thought any international firmware would have been fine to use....
Thanks ...John...
If it is network locked them you might need a polish t mobile SIM, or unlock it....sounds a bit dodgy to me....have you been back to the shop with it?
First thing CHECK YOUR IMEI number... If it is anything starting 00 or 000 it means your EFS folder got messed up... If your IMEI number is ok than download the app from the following link which will help you unlock the SIM... I didnt made the App. I am just sharing it... Credit goes to the creator(whoever he/she may be)...
http://db.tt/9AGfHu5g
No, I've not tried to return it to the shop yet. Im guessing he'll just say that it's my own fault. As everything was working fine until I messed about with it.
It's not a locked handset, I bought it as sim unlocked.
I think the T-Mobile apps and startup screen must install when you first set up the phone. He put a sim into the phone for me and thats the same one that I'm trying to get working now.

I'll try and check the IMEI when I get home, I'm In work at the moment.
I noticed a clear efs option in Odin, would this make my situation worse or better, i know some people have cleared a corrupted efs and then edited the nv_data.bin to fix it. Woukd this help.
Assuming the IMEI is corrupted, I did a nandroid backup and the first thing I did was try to restore that, but that didn't help. Should that of restored the efs folder.
Thanks. ....John....

Try using ks tools restore efs

I've checked the IMEI, and as far as I can tell everything seems ok, but it could be a different number and I wouldn't know, but at least it's not all zero's.
I tried using the GalaxSimUnlock app, but it tells me that it is unlocked, and I've tried various Sims in it just in case, but no luck.
It's really starting to baffle me now, although that's not very hard.
It works fine when manually or automatically selecting the network, it even says 'registered on network', but then when I try to dial something it says 'not registered on any network'.
Thanks ...John...

I forgot about that, I checked under the battery and the two IMEI's are different.
So it is just a question of how I can get it back. It's illegal here in the uk to change an IMEI, but would it be illegal to change it back to the original one.
Failing that could I register the new one somewhere.

Download KC-kTool app from the play store. it is free and you will be able to restore the IMEI number IF THE BACKUP EXISTS, because if you installed the OMEGA ROM than there will be the backup of the EFS folder in your internal memory card. if you cant restore than give me a call. I will explain how to restore it from the backup manually...
The ktool program wanted a efs backup in either bin or tar format, which I don't have. I new I'd probably regret doing it, but when I first realised that I couldn't get any signal I tried messing about with the apn settings, but when that didn't work I restored my backup from clockworkmod. This didn't work so I did a superwipe then tried to install Samsung firmware. So I've lost the majority of what was on the internal sdcard.
I did however, have the sense to copy my nandroid backup to my computer first, and since this was a backup of the original stock rom I don't get why it didn't solve the problem.
What I do have in the efs folder is, a nv_data.bin with today's date for the last edited timestamp, and a nv_data.bak dated 27 August. So this must be a backup of the original file, so would it be safe for me to rename, replace & reboot.
Is my IMEI in the nv_data.bin or is there a bit more to it than that.
Thanks ...John...

I ended taking the phone back to the shop I bought it from, and they fixed it overnight. I'm not really sure how they did it, because when I asked them they just said "we flashed it", but when I got it back it still had the same changed IMEI and somebody else's apps, Photo's, Messages, Google Play account, Email Accounts and even Barclay's Banking Apps.
It's like they took a CWM backup or something from someone else's phone and transferred it to my straight onto my phone.
Anyway, I factory reset it and now It's OK...
Thanks for the help... ...John...

I have a temporary solution for you. if you still have the backup of the the EFS folder in your internal or external sd card than follow the following steps,
1. copy ALL the files from the EFS BACKUP FOLDER.
2. go to the root of your your phone with root explorer of ES file explorer and find the folder EFS. it should be with all the system folders like acct, config, data, dev, efs, etc so on and on.
3. now paste all the copied files in to EFS folder. tap on REPLACE THE FILES if ASKED...
4. close the app. and go to the home screen and wait for few seconds.
if your simcard have pin than it will ask the pin after few seconds and if it doesnt have any pin than it will just get the network.
good things is you have your IMEI number restored and can use the phone like regularly. NO PROBLEMS AT ALL.
bad thing is NEVER LET YOUR PHONE SWITCH OFF. If it will switch off than you will have to follow all the steps again... annoying but works... let me know the progress buddy... best of luck...
Sorry I didn't respond earlier, I've only just seen your post.
I'd had the Guy in the shop repair the phone once, and it seemed to work ok, although I still had the changed IMEI. Then I tried to flash an official Samsung Firmware from the SamMobile site and the same thing happened again. Althought I had backed up the efs data this time around, trying to restore from this didn't seem to work. I thought I would be able to restore the new IMEI, but I guess restoring corrupted data is only marginally better than not restoring at all.
I Brought it back and luckily they gave me my money back. So I bought a brand new one instead from O2.
Now I'm a bit nervous about trying to flash it again. Any ideas as to what might causes this problem (bad practice, etc)..
Is it safer to unlock my device with an unlock code or GalaxSimUnlock. (Seems obvious, but I guess a bad unlock code could be just as damaging).
Is it safer to flash through Odin or CWM.
Is there anything else I should take into account besides doing a nandroid backup and an efs backup.
Thanks ...John...

Sorry, I didn't respond earlier, I've been busy with work, and any spare time has been filled with trying to repair a Desire HD for someone (Broken Screen, Digitizer and Trying to root and Debrand it with a v2.00.029. HBoot).
Anyway, I've rooted the phone using Chainfire's CF-root kernel, made a nandroid backup, and I'm trying to make as many efs backups as I possibly can (taking no chances ).
I've made one using busybox to tar the efs directory (although I don't think this will work).
I've made one using EFSPro.
I've use the HC-KTool program that you recommended.
I've also used the GalaxSim Unlock app to unlock & backup the efs data.
Now I was just just wondering how can I verify these backups, because something has happened that has made me question the validity of all my backups.
I tried the built in 'reboot nvbackup' method and the phone rebooted, but I didn't see anything happen. As far as I was aware you're supposed to see some blue writing as it copies the data.
Anyway, no big deal and I got on with what I was doing.
I then tried to use the Synergy Rom backup, where it said 'Backing up EFS if unlocked' and 'Not Unlocked Skipping Backup'.
Any ideas what this means, and how do I get and unlocked efs folder/partition.
An if Synergy can't back it up, how can I be sure the others are ok, too.. I know I'm probably being a bit over cautious this time round, but I don't want to be at the point where I need to use them to find out they are no good.
Thanks ...John...

Your EFS backup should be in two formats depends on the application used.
some apps use TAR.GZ and some use .IMG.
There is one way to confirm the data of EFS backup.
Go to HC-KTools>backup EFS to /sdcard/efs.img
when complete it will ask to SWITCH TO EFS BACKUP CHECK. tap on YES and than on the next screen tap on RUN CHECK.
The result should be last line saying 100% (0 BYTES DIFFER)

[Q] GT-I9300 Missing IMEI and EFS

Hi guys,
I have searched high and low for this issue. I have found a lot of forums on how to fix the problem but none of them pertain to my circumstances. I installed Omega ICS ROM v 13.1 a week or two ago. I then decided to install Omega JB v18. I then upgraded to Omega JB v21 as well. In preparation for the official Samsung JB ROM, I went back to ICS. I started by downgrading to Omega v13.1 ICS followed by stock Samsung ICS ROM I9300XXALE8. A couple of days after doing this, all of a sudden, whilst on a call, I lost signal and then the stop sign icon appeared in the top toolbar. I have no radio, no wifi, no bluetooth and no lock screen & power menu. After all of the reading I have done, I have managed to discover that my EFS has disappeared. I have rooted the phone and installed ES File explorer and have looked inside the EFS folder only to find that it is blank. I did have a Nandbackup but managed to delete it in my attempts to recover my phone (yes I know im stupid but I didnt realise the significance of the backup until I realised what was missing!!). So, no EFS backup. Seemingly nothing in the EFS folder on the phones root. Any help would be greatly appreciated. One thing I did notice, which I am sure is significant in some way, is that when I put Omega JB on it, my sdcard mounted as "sdcard0" or something along those lines. Again, because I am fairly new to the custom ROM world, I didnt realise the significance of this until I had down graded back to ICS.
Please help!!!!
Thanks again.

Flashing any roms can destroy the EFS thats why its always rule one to backup EFS folder . Multiple flashing up down up down increases the risk .
Did not Omega backup your EFS .
You say
have no radio, no wifi, no bluetooth and no lock screen & power menu
Thats not the signs of IMEI corruption as it plays no part in power menu or lockscreen .

I think that S3 has some problem in securing it's EFS folder.
I flashed my S2 with hundred's of roms and never faced this issue.
Secondly in my experience lock screen and power menu is efs folder issue.

A reminder about 2 things:
1) swapping/changing/etc IMEI's is illegal
2) giving someone else your EFS folder wont work, your phone will just default to the generic IMEI which is normally no better.

Hey. This is one of the things I had read about and tried and it came back with nothing. I don't recall the error message but I think it said it couldn't find the partition or folder or something. I am certain that it has to do with Omega Jb and the fact that it installed and mounted sdcard as sdcard0 and somehow, when going back to omega ics, this has occurred. Another thing I have just now remembered is that I had also setup a swap partition on my ext sdcard and had it mounted. This was all working fine for a few days though so I don't see how that caused it. Was really odd. Anyways, thanks for all the help, but I am going to pay for it to be repaired.

[Q] EFS Backup Issue

I've been trying to backup my EFS folder from my US Cellular GS3 (SCH-R530U) with very little luck. A couple hours of searching has pretty much everybody recommending the use of EFS Professional, so I grabbed that (release version 2.0.26), Problem is that it crashes after initializing the ADB server, hitting me with event name "CLR20r3". Searches to troubleshoot that error suggest that I check to make sure my .NET Framework is up-to-date and that I don't have any other ADB processes running in the background. Both of those have been done; error still pops up.
As-of-yet the phone is unrooted; I've been trying to backup the EFS before I begin a root and subsequent flash to AOKP (for starters). Does an unrooted R530U have issues backing up the EFS folder? Any ideas on how to fix the error EFS Pro is hitting me with, or alternative EFS backup options?
Many thanks in advance.
Are you asking in the right forum? Anything you try or download from here can kill your phone.

Was going to post in the developer's forum for EFS Pro, but don't have posting rights. So posting here on the off-chance somebody has an idea or an alternative.

I'd suggest a start from some modern recovery f.e. PhilZ Touch or CWM 6.0.3, both of them have very nice feature of making a backup, including your /efs folder. Then you can flash original stock recovery if you wish or simply flash any ROM you want because custom recovery is everything you need.

[Q] I9300, 00499 IMEI, Possibly 'Locked' to T-Mobile UK

Hi all,
In a bit of a pickle. I have flashed many phones, and this time I obviously didn't do enough homework.
What I did:
My S3 keeps losing data intermittently, so I thought having done this to a Razr, SGH-T809, G1, etc - I'd flash the latest OS - 4.2.2 (i9300xxufme7)
I downloaded Odin and installed CF-Auto-Root-m0-m0xx-gti9300
I then used Odin and flashed i9300xxufme7
I then was happy as larry, at how simple the process was - however, it turns out I now have an IMEI of 00499 and no phone number.
I am on T-Mobile UK, however the phone was purchased through a reseller (Mobiles.co.uk) so I'm not sure if it's a T-mobile phone, or a vanilla S3 that they supplied. I have never tried a different Sim card in it. It may well be locked.
What I have tried to do:
Re-flash to the standard 4.1.2 image which I thought was I9300XXEMG4_I9300OXAEMG4_BTU (this is I believe the UK image) - no change
Used NV Read write - I put my phone in RNDIS + DM + MODEM but the device isn't recognised.
Just wondering what my options are at this point?
Thanks.
Darren.
As per thousands of identical posts .
Restore your backed up EFS folder .
Fail to backup EFS then its a paid for service centre job .

Yeah, I have read this advice but I could only see it mentioned in posts from August - and since then found tools such as NV Read write, so wasn't sure if that was still the way.
I am going to try and flash TMU-I9300 to see if that will help in the first instance.
I also read that backing up the EFS folder is part of the installing ROM process by default, so could there be an EFS Backup made automatically?
Thanks for your quick reply. I'm surprised I never read the EFS backup procedure whilst doing my home work (for example, it's not written on the Sam mobile guide I followed).

Yes some custom roms backup if you choose EFS backup . It is EFSbackup tar file .

Its plastered all over the forum from week one .

Okay so because I didn't flash a custom ROM per say, no efs backup would have occured?
And I didn't read from week 1, this phone is almost 2 years old - I read the most up to date information and a step by step guide on sam mobile. Hind sight is a great thing, you obviously have it in bundles!
Well if we ignore retrospect for now and just concentrate on moving forward; you need to send for repair. I'm sure lessons have been learnt and efs backups taken before flashing next time

What firmware was on the phone before you flashed it?
Sorry most upto date information is posted in the faqs and guides of which post one is the very latest .

I got this guide .....
Step 1) restore efs backup
Step 2) try reflash original rom
Step 3) if you were ever on mg4, ensure you stick with mg4 baseband
Step 4) send for repair
There's your guide.
