RE: Camera Lag
Can anyone tell me if the camera lag I've seen on the S4 (second between pressing button and shutter firing) is gone when flashing AOKP or GE roms and using stock or focal?
No lag for me running CM 10.2 latest nightly with IR support.

What are you comparing it to? Have you run any of the ME7-based ROMs out there? The newer camera firmware takes away some of the shutter lag. Though I wouldn't say it's 100% perfect, it's much better than MDK-based ROMs.
Regarding AOSP, I've run PAC RC1 (4.2.2), and the stock camera on that is pretty quick. But I wouldn't say it's quicker than ME7 ROMs, and the TW camera demolishes AOSP feature and interface-wise.
I have yet to try focal or any 4.3 ROMs, though, so maybe the camera has improved. I did run the 4.3 Photosphere camera/gallery APK awhile back on TW, and found it to be about the same as the PAC-stock camera in terms of speed. I mostly used it for Photosphere anyway.

I would say yes. The lag on TW is frustrating (MDK and ME7 builds). Camera performance from my subjective testing seems faster and better on AOSP ROMs. Its a shame because I feel like my S4 camera performs worse than my S3 camera.

Hi all,
A couple night's ago I flashed the latest version of popdog's Oxygen ROM (2.7). This is the first version in a while that has been running stable for me with no issues with gapps. I really like the speed and battery life I'm getting with it. The only issue I have is with the quality of the camera. Previously I was using Adfad's N2 ROM and the camera quality was great on that, and judging by what others have written, N2 has the best camera quality. I left N2 mainly because I wanted to go with a more current ROM that is being updated.
I've seen a few people mention a flashable exposure fix for the camera in CM7 RC1. Unless I'm mistaken this is related to the default exposure levels and has no bearing on the overall quality of the camera shots?
Basically I'm just wanting to know if there is a a newer ROM than Adfad's N2 that has similar camera quality... Thanks
I've tried all ROMs but only N2 satisfies me as I need camera daily and N2 has amazing cam quality, in latest nightlies, you cannot get good exposure even after using the patch to fix exposures, you will need to set exposure again and again every time before clicking a photo, while in N2, default exposure is amazing, I'm trying to port the N2 camera to other ROM's
Thanks for the info umangleekha Getting the N2 camera in other ROMS would be fantastic. As much as I like the newest Oxygen ROM, I'm probably going to have to go back to N2 because of the camera. I use it regularly too.
Just out of curiosity, which kernel are you using with N2?
Dudeeee I sucessfully ported the N2 camera to RC1, check my thread in Android Development section.
Yes! Thanks for that . Just what I was looking for. Much appreciated
This weekend I updated my Galaxy Note N 7000 kernal to FM Kernal and Criskelo ROM V2. everything works great what i find is the camera quality has been reduced significantly than my stock kernal and rom. can anyone help me on what to do to improve camera quality

Maybe the new rom has a diff camera app from the stock one... i also noticed my camera quality dropped when flashed a custom rom...try a different camera app like camera zoom fx or any other n see if the quality is still the same.
Mine did the same but I got a app that works fine.

Yeah, different ROMs comes with different settings. So either try editing the settings or go for a different camera.apk. Either way, I think the best thing to do if you really use the camera a lot, then go for a different ROM.
Good luck
I've just been trying out GT-I9100_XEU_I9100XWLP7_I9100XXLPS_I9100XEULP5.tar from Infratech's stock ROM thread for the last day or so and have found it slow. Often I'll touch the screen and nothing will register or it will take a full second or so to respond. Starting apps can sometimes take up to two seconds before it seems to register. Scrolling long lists in various apps can sometimes show a small amount of lag on Gingerbread, but on this ROM it's horrific.
This can't be right can it? Is anyone else finding this? If this is progress in the name of ICS, I'll stick with GB.

I don't know about stock rooms but I'm on cm9 the latest nightly and its pretty slick to be honest. I can't wait until the wake locks are sorted but I just love it! I hate anything of Sammy stock firmware I think they are kind of clueless in that department but good in the hardware side of things. Also people have been talking about Sammy working on android 4.0.4 so that should fix any issues. Hope I helped you mate

I've been on cm9 for the last few months, and I have just dual-booted lp9 Samsung ICS rom yesterday, and I just couldn't believe how slow and laggy everything was in Samsung ICS rom compered to cm9 and Samsung gingerbread rom. The browser was horrendously laggy compared to Samsung gingerbread roms and the same issues as described by the OP. Also, the scrolling mechanism was just screwed up beyond belief. I really like the idea of switching between cm9 and Samsung roms when I feel like change, but at the moment I find all ICS Samsung roms, just unusable after using cm9. I hope Samsung fixes this mess in their next major update.
ICS 4.0.3 is not 100%
ICS 4.0.3 is not 100% perfect couple of issue are there.
Waiting for Samsung to Release 4.0.4 which will address many issues that are present in 4.0.3.
cm9 to me is draging ics behind it, when ics is improved cm9 will be mint ,im still on Gb but will flash when it gets up to 4.1.0 etc, i dont want these bugs in my daily life.
I'm using LP7, tweaked some cosmetic stuff, and I find it very fast and responsive. A friend recently changed from GB 2.3.6 to ICS 4.0.3 official via Kies and said (his words, not mine): its a whole new smartphone.
try cm9 buddy, best rom ive used atm
or you can try hydrogenics, its basically the same with some added tweaks.

ICS is smooth for me, very smooth. Don't use AOKP roms since lgcamera doesn't work well with them yet. Battery life is worse than sammy based roms as well, plus no dialer codes work. The only LAG I've gotten is with Quickpic. Don't know what the difference is between Quickpic on GB and this one on ICS but swiping across photos lags like hell and yet the stock gallery is now smooth like cream
For me, ICS is smooth as a baby's bottom, as long I stay on stock kernel. Once I flash a custom kernel, smoothness goes south. For this reason, although I like the fast charging feature in Siyah, I have to stay on stock.
dialer codes are working for me
cm9 is smooth as hell and more than stable for normal usage
yes, it is laggy. little better using Siyah.
No issues whatsoever when using AOKP roms. Try changing kernels.

Using Resurrection ROM 1.8.1. It is buttery smooth with excellent battery life.
Stock Samsung laggy
CM9 stable and smooth but battery life is so shocking to use for daily life
I don't have a choice right now then wait for stock 4.0.4 samsung rom...

I found a ROM that was receiving a lot of praise, called AndyX. It's using Siyah kernel if I remember right. I tried it and it was actually very good, nice and smooth, no complaints. It also has the ICS look I was expecting to see which was quite nice. You mention lgcamera not working on AOKP ROMs - I'd never heard of AOKP but have just done a quick google and may see what's kicking around for the S2. I know this is the wrong thread, but it's thanks to you I can now record video in 720p without in looking like a slideshow (lgcamera tips in another thread)
So, in summary, my initial choice entering the world of ICS just turned out to be a dud and there's hope yet.
EDIT: I may well go back to AndyX for a bit.. I had to restore to my normal GB ROM because I changed governor in AndyX and now the phone freezes before I can unlock it

AOKP is based off CM9 with other mods flung in (Look at Resurrection Remix or Hydrogenics) and they both run smooth. However I NEED lgcamera unless I get horrible FPS in the camera (looks like you know what I'm talking about lol). Just so you know, 1080p does work as well without lag just in case you didn't notice. I do prefer 720p though. No automatic zoom in like 1080p. I used to be on AndyX rom, quite some time ago actually
I came from Gingerbread KL1 & updated to LPG, gotta say even though I had the phone for 4 days (on GB) the lag is very much noticeable on ICS! The phone was just blazing quick everywhere but it just *feels* different now...

Searched and I was surprised there was no main thread comparing and discussing the differences between Sense and AOSP roms like a lot of other device sub forums have. I've been running a Sense 5 rom since I got my DNA a few months ago but have been itching to switch to AOSP. However I have a few questions.
In my past experience with other devices, native ROMs (in this case Sense based) usually work a little better in terms of things like battery life, signal, and stability. Is this the same for the DNA?
Other things I'm concerned about
-Camera: IMO the Sense camera is way better than the AOSP. I can deal with the loss of software features, but is the picture quality still as good?
-Sound: Beats is mostly just an equalizer gimmick, but the DNA is loud and overall sounds great. I briefly ran an AOSP rom and the first thing I noticed was the sounds was distorted at high levels. I also found this thread which echos my problem. Is this still an issue?
I'd say in my opinion you are spot on with the sense vs aosp in the aspect of aosp issues! Just MY OPINION AND PERSONAL FINDINGS! I love Aosp but I do think it lacked some of the "stock, supposed to be there" kind of feeling I get with sense.. I have been running the CM 11 nightlies for quite a while now. I don't know about pic quality for sure. If there is a difference it's not noticeable to me. I do think I get better battery on sense but signal and stability are basically equal..

I haven't run an AOSP rom since I first flashed NOS Google Play Edition. No matter how strong the temptation to try KitKat, the lower external speaker volume on the AOSP roms that I tried, combined with the inability to use Google Sound Search, Soundhound, or Shazam, ultimately made me stick with a rom using the Sense kernel. But, since I can't stand Sense, I'm sticking with GPE Roms, no matter how delayed they may be.

I've just been on CM11 today after only using sense 5. I can say I already miss blinkfeed, and can already assume the battery will be worse, but everything else seems the same. It's worth trying. I'm rather fond of the Google integration.

The battery is way better when the screen is off, but probably worse than sense when the screen is on. I don't usually have more than 2 and a half hours of screen time in a day, but I typically get about 18 hours of battery on crpalmer's cm11 kernel. Also as far as cameras go, I love camera jb+. Stock aosp camera with some extra features, my favorite being the 6mp setting because it gives me full screen 16:9 pictures. Focal is great too and shows a lot if potential, but it's really unstable.

The only problem I have with CM based roms is the low volume when recording videos. Otherwise no problems. Battery, signal, speaker volume, etc are are on par or better than Sense plus the snappiness and customizability are great. There may be a couple apps that don't work well with CM ROMs but I don't use those particular apps so it's not a problem for me.
I've been running Carbon 4.3 for the last two months. I have not tried a KK ROM since all the features have not been implemented yet.

I spent the first two-thirds of the year playing with alpha and beta ROMs, right now I'm just holding steady with the full-featured versions of 4.3. Plus there's nothing compelling about KK ROMs except for the fact it's new. It has ART but it's still too new and some devs suggest against using it for now.
In my experience sense obviously has a better camera and also better sound even with beats off and viper audio sense sound is just better.

I've made the jump and I'm on the latest CM 4.4.2 (12-17 build) and it is sooooo much faster and smoother than 4.3. I was scared to make the jump but this thing really flies. Battery life is about the same.

I tried KK today, what annoys me is:
1. The browser, which I use a lot, doesn't have text reflow, incognito mode, and working full screen mode (hide nav bar). I do not like other browsers.
2. The dialer sucks.
With the tweaks it doesn't seem much faster than 4.3.

Weird. Ive flashed back and forth between 4.3 and 4.4....4.4 feels way smoother
HTC DNA
I don't care for smoothness, I want it to be responsive and fast. If I flick up or down I don't want a delay to make it feel smooth, I want it to instantly move fast. That's just me, I have all animations and various frills turned off. I replicated the same setup on 4.4 and it just wasn't the same.
Being a photographer, I don't think I am going to be able to use an AOSP ROM cause the Camera options just fail in comparison to the stock camera.
But it would be awesome to have the themeing options of the CM based roms. Any such luck?

Thanks,
Kind of what I assumed. I have been out of the flashing game for awhile but the Verizon update to Lollipop was just horrendous I had to do something. Flashed Euphoria and aside from some issues love being back on an AOSP ROM, just really unfortunate that the Camera situation is so dismal. I have even flashed the Lenovo Cam with the Bravia engine etc, just not stable or fast enough
