Searched and I was surprised there was no main thread comparing and discussing the differences between Sense and AOSP roms like a lot of other device sub forums have. I've been running a Sense 5 rom since I got my DNA a few months ago but have been itching to switch to AOSP. However I have a few questions.
In my past experience with other devices, native ROMs (in this case Sense based) usually work a little better in terms of things like battery life, signal, and stability. Is this the same for the DNA?
Other things I'm concerned about
-Camera: IMO the Sense camera is way better than the AOSP. I can deal with the loss of software features, but is the picture quality still as good?
-Sound: Beats is mostly just an equalizer gimmick, but the DNA is loud and overall sounds great. I briefly ran an AOSP rom and the first thing I noticed was the sounds was distorted at high levels. I also found this thread which echos my problem. Is this still an issue?
I'd say in my opinion you are spot on with the sense vs aosp in the aspect of aosp issues! Just MY OPINION AND PERSONAL FINDINGS! I love Aosp but I do think it lacked some of the "stock, supposed to be there" kind of feeling I get with sense.. I have been running the CM 11 nightlies for quite a while now. I don't know about pic quality for sure. If there is a difference it's not noticeable to me. I do think I get better battery on sense but signal and stability are basically equal..

I haven't run an AOSP rom since I first flashed NOS Google Play Edition. No matter how strong the temptation to try KitKat, the lower external speaker volume on the AOSP roms that I tried, combined with the inability to use Google Sound Search, Soundhound, or Shazam, ultimately made me stick with a rom using the Sense kernel. But, since I can't stand Sense, I'm sticking with GPE Roms, no matter how delayed they may be.

I've just been on CM11 today after only using sense 5. I can say I already miss blinkfeed, and can already assume the battery will be worse, but everything else seems the same. It's worth trying. I'm rather fond of the Google integration.

The battery is way better when the screen is off, but probably worse than sense when the screen is on. I don't usually have more than 2 and a half hours of screen time in a day, but I typically get about 18 hours of battery on crpalmer's cm11 kernel. Also as far as cameras go, I love camera jb+. Stock aosp camera with some extra features, my favorite being the 6mp setting because it gives me full screen 16:9 pictures. Focal is great too and shows a lot if potential, but it's really unstable.

The only problem I have with CM based roms is the low volume when recording videos. Otherwise no problems. Battery, signal, speaker volume, etc are are on par or better than Sense plus the snappiness and customizability are great. There may be a couple apps that don't work well with CM ROMs but I don't use those particular apps so it's not a problem for me.
I've been running Carbon 4.3 for the last two months. I have not tried a KK ROM since all the features have not been implemented yet.

I spent the first two-thirds of the year playing with alpha and beta ROMs, right now I'm just holding steady with the full-featured versions of 4.3. Plus there's nothing compelling about KK ROMs except for the fact it's new. It has ART but it's still too new and some devs suggest against using it for now.
In my experience sense obviously has a better camera and also better sound even with beats off and viper audio sense sound is just better.

I've made the jump and I'm on the latest CM 4.4.2 (12-17 build) and it is sooooo much faster and smoother than 4.3. I was scared to make the jump but this thing really flies. Battery life is about the same.

I tried KK today, what annoys me is:
1. The browser, which I use a lot, doesn't have text reflow, incognito mode, and working full screen mode (hide nav bar). I do not like other browsers.
2. The dialer sucks.
With the tweaks it doesn't seem much faster than 4.3.

Weird. Ive flashed back and forth between 4.3 and 4.4....4.4 feels way smoother
HTC DNA
I don't care for smoothness, I want it to be responsive and fast. If I flick up or down I don't want a delay to make it feel smooth, I want it to instantly move fast. That's just me, I have all animations and various frills turned off. I replicated the same setup on 4.4 and it just wasn't the same.

i have a valid question for you guys. every ice cream rom ive tried has given me significant lag/choppiness and heats up my rezound. now today i played with both a gnexus at verizon and a htc one x at at&t and it was smooth as butter. is our issues because of no ota or kernel source? just curious as to what you guys think?
thanks!

Both I would take a very educated guess in saying. no OTA means it is a work in progress and no kernel source means that the kernels aren't really tweaked out for the ROMs they are running....
my guess is sense bogs us down a good bit. also ics is coded for the gnex.
Without kernel source, we're stuck with what the leak has. From what I've read, that is not good.
I'm sticking with GB until we have source...GB flies for me!

Yeah, Sense 3.5/.6 are steaming piles of laggy crap, but 4.0 seems really nice.
I have official ics on my unrooted galaxy tab 2. It has the touchwiz overlay but is still superfast. I was worried too that ICS was slow until I got this. I think the omap processor is a better performer on average than a qualcomm too, but not by much.
If you are running the gb kernel and firmware it is hit or miss with ics roms for the rezound. GB will always be faster if running gb firmware and kernel. I hope that the ics kernel is fixed when we get the official ics update and that sense doesnt bog things down. We really need htc to release kernel source and firmware in order to have a solid base for ics roms imo. I love Rez Rom Sense 3.6 ICS though, runs pretty good even on old firmware.

Actually for me all of the sense 4.0 ports were super laggy. I can say gb seems more fluid but the battery life still stinks on my rezound. That one x is really a nice device but im thinking this may be my last htc. I havent had good luck with the brand.
Thanks for the responses guys.
ICS doesn't lag for me ever, but I dig the Senseless roms for the looks, and indeed, Sense 4.0 isn't optimized for us yet.

Agreed, if there were such a range in hardware that some overheated while others were great, I'd expect that HTC's quality control was so bad that half the units that were produced wouldn't even power up. Always get a kick out reading about someone who has warrantied a couple of phones then in the next breath says "I'm running "xyz" kernel and OC'd...
Anyway, would you mind sharing your setup Gray? It might help others to know what a working ICS setup is. What Kernel, Radios and other specifics are you running.
What I find is interesting is that with my first rezound I had a horrible experience when I flashed the ICS leak. Extreme overheating, even worse battery life, but it was nothing that I could have done. It was the radios on some hardware that cause this issue. I sent it back, got another, and reran the leak. Haven't looked back since. It's also worth noting that I have a way better experience with ICS then I did with GB. GB scrolling was always choppy and just overall sluggish. ICS fixed all that along with giving me a battery life ranging from 11-17 hours depending on usage.

I also have a better user experience, as in runs faster, smoother, and less lag along with better battery life on ice cream sandwich than I did on gingerbread. I think a lot of it has to do with how it's set up and configured. And I understand that some people have genuine hardware problems but it seems that it's causing a lot of people to quickly attribute their issues to hardware and not spend the time to chase down the problem and solve it. Regardless another leaked kernel or an official OTA base will definitely be welcomed and help this beast run even better.

I don't get any "lag" persay with any Rom I've used. What drives me a little nuts is the stuttery and choppy scrolling in a LOT of apps I use daily. The text and the pictures chop, even though the scrolling motion is smooth. Facebook, zynga apps, internet (if its more than text) messaging app, contacts, reddit news... There are some that don't stutter though. Twicca, tapatalk, menu scrolling, root explorer...

That annoyed me about GB (stock and CleanROM 1.7.5). Even on ICS, Facebook scrolling is choppy, unless you enable Force GPU rendering. Running ICS with Force GPU rendering is an incredibly smooth experience, and I haven't run into any bugs. I'm surprised it's not enabled by default in all ROMs.
I think that people having a better experience on a hacked(nicely mind you), sense 4.0 rom must have set up Gingerbread wrong. See how easy it is to make a statement like that. I have experienced both ics, and gb, and have always had a smoother experience on gb. I hated how ics scrolling in the browser, xda app, tapatalk, and others was jittery at best. I love some of the elements of ics, but the trade off was too much for me. My phone ran about 11 degrees different between ics, and gb. Also, if you go back to around Christmas, overheating was an issue then. On stock. So apparently, this phone can have heat issues. Don't get me wrong, I love this phone, and I appreciate all the work that goes into making roms. I have been following these developers for quite a while. They are all really good. We are blessed to have them.

The title pretty much says everything. What should I do?
The reason I've stuck with the stock rom is;
- Beats (The actual HTC one, also present in all audio and toggle when watching video)
- May receive updates (see below)
- HTC's Camera
- Seems to be the most stable
However, I also want these;
- Good battery life (Which stock rom is just, awful at doing)
- Slightly faster performance (It's fast already but you do get some delay with actions, mainly cause of HTC's junk.)
- Android 4.2.1, mainly for the expandable notifications really, I'm fed up of having to pinch them all the time.
- CPU Limits (underclocking)
HTC still haven't given us the 4.2 update yet. They're absolutely awful at giving them. My Wildfire S got updated to 2.3.5 in Jan '12, long after better Android Systems. If I had the 4.2 update, I wouldn't be contemplating this. Samsung are way better at the updates. HTC need to take a leaf out of their book.
A custom HTC rom is my first choice but I have a feeling the battery will still be awful. CM10.1 is a good option but feels so innocent, and the HTC look has kind of been imprinted on my head.
I'm using the stock rom, rooted and customized a bit(still need to deodex it though). At any rate, I'm having pretty good luck with it thus far, now that it's tweaked a little.
That being said, there are some good options in the roms section that are pretty much all reported to help battery life, performance, etc. Elegancia seems to be really popular at the moment so you might check that one out.
And of course, patience is also key here, in that as time passes more devs will probably get one, more roms will come out, etc. Hope that helps.

I would definitely go with the Viper XL ROM from Venom. It has been absolutely amazing. Performance is top notch, battery is top notch. Hats off to them. Really amazing rom.
Well considering how old this is I assume you already made a decision. That said if you are still looking I would go with Elegancia. The only other rom I tried was venom/viper and my experience was a train wreck. The rom was slow, had a tendency to need rebooted quite often and even after 2 weeks of cycles the batter was poor. Not to mention the force closes and the amount of utilities that seemed useless.

I agree on Elegancia. It looks stock, no ui changes, the pull down menu is stock (unlike viper has too many options in the pull down) no bloatware (for me no AT&T crap) it's rooted and ready to be used. Tried Viper roms for about a day and my OCD was going crazy with so many options. I like it to be clean and simple also it doesn't have a carrier or author boot sounds or images (my stock ROM had an annoying at&t noise and carrier logo and viper had its own boot logo of a cobra and said Viper)

You can customize Viper in any way. If you don´t wanna have so much options, you can delete some of them. The Tweaks give you the ability, to change all in the way you like. That´s the freedom of Android Phones and Viper increases the possibilities.
Would love to run one of aosp, aokp or cm roms but the poor audio is off-putting. I appreciate this is a problem with HTC not releasing the drivers, but for now it keeps me on a stock based rom. I like the clean look of the sense-less Jellybean roms, the low and tinny speaker volume is a little off-putting.

The Venom ROM is nice. Im just waiting for them to fix the volume rocker mod so I can change songs in Pandora without unlocking the phone http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2098218
Lloir is working a CM10 AOSP ROM and the audio appears fine. The only tinny audio issue I had was with the HTC Inspire and that issue went away with JB ROMs.

But truth be told I'm very happy with the stock roms performance, I deleted all the bloatware and crap i dont use and its performance and battery life are above average, im very satisfied. The only thing I'd change is the factory battery icon (id like to see actual percentage), and id like to have a landscape mode on the home screen.

What is overall the most stable rom that actually has up to date android features? I was reading the CM10 issues log and stuff like "can't receive calls when bluetooth is on" is just an instant turnoff. I know every custom ROM is going to have issues, but what is overall the best balance of modern and stable for the Droid X2?
I'd like at least 4.1, but I know the world isn't perfect.
Well since we are sadly on a locked bootloader it makes it difficult for us; The most stable roms are Gingerbread. CM7 is pretty good and is running android 2.3.6 i believe. Eclipse is pretty good and smooth but cm7 has overall more features. CM10 would probably more stable than cm9 but cm10 sadly gets some force closes(i never experienced this when i was using it )

4.1 is the furthest we have gotten. cm10 is 4.1 , cm9 is 4.0 . cm10 is WAY more stable than any ICS build we have. i use it as a daily, and if you dont use many apps, and can stand a bit less battery life, it is totally worth it.
it has curbed my want/need for a new phone.....or atleast until november!

You know, with all the apps, launchers, keyboards, themes, etc., you can probably be pretty happy with a stable gingerbread ROM and make it look and feel like ICS or JB.
I'd run cm7 with holo launcher for that jb feel

at this point, i have been using cm9 for a few months due to the phone call issue present in cm10. whenever the screen turns off due to the proximity sensor ( holding it to your face) the call is lost and the phone freaks out. this is a phone. so that would not work for me. cm9 has better battery life, and a few more apps work with it. from what it seems, DZK has abandoned us. our only how on a better JB is g2yupie working out his 4.2, and it not having the same phone call issue. i say try out cm9. unless you dont make many calls. also, it doesnt do the proximity thing if you are plugged in. but any other time, under any other circumstances , it does. there is no work around.
I sold my Note II yesterday and i was looking for a good stock Google smartphone. I owned a G2 for a week and I remember it had a brilliant battery life, but i don't like the LG OS. I heard about a good development scene about stock-based ROMs like Cyanogen. Is that true?
On Note II, because of the Exynos CPU and some lack of development support from Samsung, Cyano ROMs were just a mixed bag of experience. There are some minor issues everywhere and the 2-days battery life of the samsung ROM is impossible to get on CM.
So, i'm looking for a G2 for a quick CM 11 flash. Do you think it's a good idea?
I'm also considering a OnePlus One, but the invitation thing is a bit annoying and i don't think it will be easy to get one.

If you're entirely bothered about AOSP, I'd go for the Nexus 5 or HTC One GPE. If you had asked me yesterday I'd have said AOSP roms are still a bit buggy with issues but I put on OmniRom last night - it really seems the best of the bunch at the moment! Not had any issues at all (But I've only been using it properly for 12 hours or so).

Yeah, but what about battery life?
I'm ok with the 2-days of moderate usage of the Note, and i heard that Nexus 5 and the One M7 aren't very good on battery life.
I used to be on CM 10.2 stable and everything worked fine. Then I wanted to try Kit Kat, but CM 11 was pretty unstable for me (I think I tried the M4 build).
I decided to give stock another try since LG released their KK firmware. I used to own a Nexus 4 and still prefer AOSP, but you can get LG stock close to AOSP.
I use Nova Launcher and with G2 Tweakbox (Xposed) you can switch the ugly LG quicksettings with the AOSP one. CloudyStock 2.0 ROM allows you to remove LG 's bloatware during installation.
There is a GPE ROM for the lg g2.

+1 here, im also using stock kk+nova and deleted bloated apps using TB Pro + using some kernels available(using simple kernel default settings, smooth and battery friendly or if dori's kernel is updated to stable) works perfectly and smooth for me. It gives me 3days of usage when I turn my phone useless and 1 day if I play games for hours which is normal.
CM11 nightlies have been perfectly stable for me over the past 2-3 weeks

I did try cm 11 m5 build, everything working like it should, smooth, less stuttering than on stock. but just can't stand camera. It's miles away from stock

With KK sources released, we should have stable builds.
Although honestly I am loving stock 4.4.2 + root + xposed. I've never used a stock rom longer then a week before. Been running stock since November. Simply amazing.

Thanks for the interesting replies!
Stock KK is tempting me but when i tried i figured that i don't like so much the LG interface

Agreed. Well, Stock + Root + Xposed + Nova Prime + Simple Kernel (underclocked to 1.728ghz) and a lot of bloat frozen/deleted is about as perfect as I have had the phone running. Battery life is excellent for me (40-45 hours with 5% battery left. 60% permanent screen brightness. 5-7 hours screen on time).

do check out the g2 dev forums for the available roms. personally i'm using mahdi rom and ehndroix before that. They are both SUPERB imo.
if battery life's what you're concerned about, for myself the roms average drains around from 100 percent to 70 percent in average of 12hours? (as i'm a light user).
in comparison to nexus 5 and htc, i'm almost definite that the battery capacity on g2 outclasses them both. so battery wise, g2 is good choice. Since my purchase of the phone in november, the dev for roms has been increasing steadily.
G2's definitely worth a consideration
Omni ROM is great for me obviously it's not CM but its got loads of options and is stable as can be really. Just had to change the low memory killer to medium with kernel tweaker but otherwise running as provided.

How much did you used it? Because on every aosp i have installed i got allways reboot problems... Now I'm on stock modded lighting rom is fast like aosp and i have call record also on bluetooth, something that on aosp is missed. But i have to say that those kk stock rom from lg are bugged because you can't disable obexmaptransaction (the bluetooth sms sharing thing) and it drian more battery than JB when paired in car. I use the phone for work so if i have to say wich is the best atm for me is stock JB but KK is lot more snappier, so i'm using this, because i have read somewhere that LG is going to push an OTA to fix those small issue.
Another problem on stock is that when you have to save a contact by default the phone use internal memory and not the Google account, so every time i have to select my account. I hate this because you cant edit wich accounts have to be the default one.
Sorry for my english, i hope to have given an idea based on my personal experience with the roms out there for the D802.
The aosp I have tried past 3 days are: Slimkat, Paranoid and Mahdi both unstable for my use for the frequent reboots...

Yeah, on the Note2 side of the forum there's a bunch of users that say "this nightly is perfect, this custom ROM is amazing" but in fact none of them are perfectly fine for random reasons (camera issues, BT issues, battery issues and so on). I hope that on the LG G2 side there's a different situation, thank to the Qualcomm CPU that i think is better for development.
AOSP ROMs are really good for me on my D802. Now on latest Mahdi Rom with merged 4.4 sources I have 4h screen-on-time with 59% battery left, I unplugged the phone 21h ago. I have 'only 2G' setting and I used a lot of WiFi (Dolphin, FB Messenger, Youtube...)
Generally the ROMs will get really stable on days/weeks, because of LG 4.4 sources.

What? You browse the web on 2G network?
No matter how hard I tried, I couldnt get same battery life (with same usage) with any aosp roms. Stock had always btter battery for me.

Just activate ART The thing is to flash proper Gapps and generally to flash the ROM properly, for me ART is always stable and it gives profits in battery life and smoothness.
Whoa, Did I really say that?
I remember posting in the KitKat thread daily and looking at various LG sources for the newest update. I got excited when I saw how much faster and smoother KitKat was in this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_UcvB4aD0KA
When I first tried KitKat I was really impressed. Maybe it was placebo. But it felt smoother and nicer. And I got Immersive mode too! Then I noticed that the battery drained faster, but I learned to accept that. Recently; I was barely able to reach 4h 30 min of SOT on kitkat. The standby times were awful, too, and without root, you have no way of checking what's eating your battery.
It all culminated with the 20D update, that rendered VOIP useless and impossible. I then decided I wanted to return to JB.
I had almost forgotten how GOOD Jelly Bean was. Sure, there's lockscreen lag, occasional scroll animation lag and no immersive mode, but apart from that, I barely notice any major drawbacks. Battery life is so much better, wakelock detectors function perfectly and VOIP works!
So for those of you who have had this thought in your mind for long, just do it. The process of going back to jelly bean took me about 5 minutes and I'm happy with my decision, at least for now.
Have you had a similar experience then please share it!
Guide for going back to JB: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2432476
I bought my G2 before KK was released for it. Initially, I was only delaying the upgrade because Swiftkey wouldn't work for kitkat on the G2. I am staying on Jellybean now. Everyone I know with this phone complains of issues now after going to KK.

I have zero issues on kitkat. Then again im running aosp.
Jellybean was trash for the vs980 because of reboots, and sod's on aosp.
I will agree on stock jellybean I had better battery life, but if you need better than a day off charge with 5-7 hours sot, you have issues.
I'll pass.

T-mobile D801 here, latest KK.
absolutely zero issues here. the battery life is actually better, the performance across the board is way better, the extra features are great and worth it. the only issue i was concerned with before the upgrade was the audio hiss / distortion but as it turned out D801 has never suffered from it and on latest KK the sound is as good as with JB for me.
Agree... Except the camera was unbearable!!
Still, I think it's excellent we can go back. Subscribed.

might be nice to use kk ondemand settings on jb.. make it a bit snappier
also the advantage of using aosp browser properly is a big plus.. with webview intact

SwiftKey worked on Kitkat since day one. You would just get a popup that gapps stopped working once you turned the phone on but that was all.

You are more than free to pass, but the thing is - on kitkat, I was barely able to get four hours of SOT on a regular basis. And since I'm an unrooted user, I have NO ways of checking what's draining my battery at all. Sure Jelly Bean is not flawless, but battery life is very important to me and seems more stable all around.

My device never had the hissing problem with KitKat, and the perfomance was generally much snappier. But the international KitKat didn't seem to be refined at all, so maybe TMo did their job!

I agree. But I actually figured that the phone runs much cooler on Jelly Bean BECAUSE the speed doesn't jump to 2.26Ghz instantly. I also think that the refined ondemand is what's taking a toll on the battery =)
JB had HORRIBLE bluetooth drivers on stock for my device in my Honda Civic. The static in the background was borderline unbearable. KK update fixed it so I'm sticking with KK. Battery life could be better though, I do agree. Something I've always noticed about all devices I've owned is that the shipping OS is always the most stable.

Now that you remind me - I occasionally played music from my phone in my dad's car through bluetooth. I only have lossless music on my G2 (.FLAC), so the music quality of the files is generally very good. On kitkat, however, I would start hearing background noises at higher volumes. That's not a problem on Jelly Bean at all.
I guess you're right about your observation, although instead of going back to the 10A which my phone shipped with, I downgraded to 10F (a version of the software, which I never got). The only major difference I feel between 10A and 10F (and keep in mind it's over 4 months since I last used JB) is, that knock on is much faster on 10F and very comparable to KitKat. The only thing I really miss, however, is the CPU jumping up to an adequate frequency to prevent lockscreen lag.
I do agree with the fact JB had stellar battery life compared to KK, although i feel like if i go back to JB, mentally thinking i feel outdated compare to the other phones out there, but thats just me haha, i never had any lags when i first got my G2 out of the box, highly disappointed the fact KK did the opposite in terms of battery life. Honestly i cant really complain, this battery still beats all the devices ive owned or came across and tried for a few days, M7, S4 etc
I guess the kk battery is also more bad because like you guys said it is fast and smoother then the jb stock and jb stock is cooler so yh... Their kernel. Kk stock users must just use dorimanx kernel its better and safer then the stock one

@OP
"I had almost forgotten how GOOD Jelly Bean was."
R u sure you meant "GOOD" and not "BAD"???
You can always go back to JB and then months later, you could say the same thing "I had almost forgotten how GOOD Kit Kat was."
C'mon, m8, move forward.
I have seen too many people eager to get the new update (that many people usually do curse mfg. for slow update) then demand to go back.
Same exact reaction with Windows OS.
I personally have no issue with KK.
Im going to 4.4.4 cm11 to see what its like and if its cack ill be going back to jb i think.
