ice cream & lag. - HTC Rezound

i have a valid question for you guys. every ice cream rom ive tried has given me significant lag/choppiness and heats up my rezound. now today i played with both a gnexus at verizon and a htc one x at at&t and it was smooth as butter. is our issues because of no ota or kernel source? just curious as to what you guys think?
thanks!

Both I would take a very educated guess in saying. no OTA means it is a work in progress and no kernel source means that the kernels aren't really tweaked out for the ROMs they are running....

my guess is sense bogs us down a good bit. also ics is coded for the gnex.

Without kernel source, we're stuck with what the leak has. From what I've read, that is not good.
I'm sticking with GB until we have source...GB flies for me!

Yeah, Sense 3.5/.6 are steaming piles of laggy crap, but 4.0 seems really nice.

I have official ics on my unrooted galaxy tab 2. It has the touchwiz overlay but is still superfast. I was worried too that ICS was slow until I got this. I think the omap processor is a better performer on average than a qualcomm too, but not by much.
If you are running the gb kernel and firmware it is hit or miss with ics roms for the rezound. GB will always be faster if running gb firmware and kernel. I hope that the ics kernel is fixed when we get the official ics update and that sense doesnt bog things down. We really need htc to release kernel source and firmware in order to have a solid base for ics roms imo. I love Rez Rom Sense 3.6 ICS though, runs pretty good even on old firmware.

GB flies for me too, even running a sense ROM.
I always chuckle when people post how "slow and laggy" sense is.
I get absolutely zero lag running sense 3.5 and figure those posters are probably clueless on how to correctly set up their system.......

Actually for me all of the sense 4.0 ports were super laggy. I can say gb seems more fluid but the battery life still stinks on my rezound. That one x is really a nice device but im thinking this may be my last htc. I havent had good luck with the brand.
Thanks for the responses guys.

ICS doesn't lag for me ever, but I dig the Senseless roms for the looks, and indeed, Sense 4.0 isn't optimized for us yet.

when i went from a sense rom to an aosp rom on my inc2 i noticed a big difference in speed. sense definitely affects things.

ics runs great for me on 3.5/3.6 and on 4.0 its great as well... i have no problems at all

I don't get all these people who have all the battery and heating problems. I think it is user error. I have better battery and better signal since I upgraded to ICS CleanROM.

Agreed, if there were such a range in hardware that some overheated while others were great, I'd expect that HTC's quality control was so bad that half the units that were produced wouldn't even power up. Always get a kick out reading about someone who has warrantied a couple of phones then in the next breath says "I'm running "xyz" kernel and OC'd...
Anyway, would you mind sharing your setup Gray? It might help others to know what a working ICS setup is. What Kernel, Radios and other specifics are you running.

What I find is interesting is that with my first rezound I had a horrible experience when I flashed the ICS leak. Extreme overheating, even worse battery life, but it was nothing that I could have done. It was the radios on some hardware that cause this issue. I sent it back, got another, and reran the leak. Haven't looked back since. It's also worth noting that I have a way better experience with ICS then I did with GB. GB scrolling was always choppy and just overall sluggish. ICS fixed all that along with giving me a battery life ranging from 11-17 hours depending on usage.

I also have a better user experience, as in runs faster, smoother, and less lag along with better battery life on ice cream sandwich than I did on gingerbread. I think a lot of it has to do with how it's set up and configured. And I understand that some people have genuine hardware problems but it seems that it's causing a lot of people to quickly attribute their issues to hardware and not spend the time to chase down the problem and solve it. Regardless another leaked kernel or an official OTA base will definitely be welcomed and help this beast run even better.

I don't get any "lag" persay with any Rom I've used. What drives me a little nuts is the stuttery and choppy scrolling in a LOT of apps I use daily. The text and the pictures chop, even though the scrolling motion is smooth. Facebook, zynga apps, internet (if its more than text) messaging app, contacts, reddit news... There are some that don't stutter though. Twicca, tapatalk, menu scrolling, root explorer...

That annoyed me about GB (stock and CleanROM 1.7.5). Even on ICS, Facebook scrolling is choppy, unless you enable Force GPU rendering. Running ICS with Force GPU rendering is an incredibly smooth experience, and I haven't run into any bugs. I'm surprised it's not enabled by default in all ROMs.

I think that people having a better experience on a hacked(nicely mind you), sense 4.0 rom must have set up Gingerbread wrong. See how easy it is to make a statement like that. I have experienced both ics, and gb, and have always had a smoother experience on gb. I hated how ics scrolling in the browser, xda app, tapatalk, and others was jittery at best. I love some of the elements of ics, but the trade off was too much for me. My phone ran about 11 degrees different between ics, and gb. Also, if you go back to around Christmas, overheating was an issue then. On stock. So apparently, this phone can have heat issues. Don't get me wrong, I love this phone, and I appreciate all the work that goes into making roms. I have been following these developers for quite a while. They are all really good. We are blessed to have them.

ICS - 1 week later... impressions?

So it's been roughly a week since the ICS leak hit. What are your impressions?
I didn't think a tweaked GB 2.3.4 rom was too bad, at least not to the point where I constantly pined over ICS. GB was satisfactory to say the least.
ICS has been pretty impressive imo. Battery life has definitely improved and things feel a bit more peppier. Then again it could all be placebo effect. I mainly preferred a sense base rom for the camera and I'm pretty happy i can have the best of both worlds.
Overall if my level of satisfaction with the 2.3.4 roms was a 7/10 i would rate my satisfaction a 9/10 with ICS.
What do you guys think so far?
So far so good, i would rate it 9.5/10.
I am personally much happier with ICS then GB. I like the look and feel I just wish i had the same service (coverage) as GB. I now get HORRIBLE reception. Hopefully there will be an update for my completely stock Amaze.
Very stable here.

I'm having the same experience.
the only thing i really dislike about ics is the lack of apps optimized for ics (no fault of ics of course)
my reception doesn't feel changed at all.
I guess its because where i am its either 1. very strong or 2. weak to the point where there is no signal.
I am using NRG ICS, but I was on stock for a day. I really like it, and the battery is twice as good.
My favorite feature is that one can combine icons on the desktop to create "folders" with multiple programs. I keep all my browsers in the space needed by only one icon. Very cool.
I like ARHD. I'm getting fast data speeds and good reception. The battery life isn't all that great. I already reconditioned it 3 times, and did a battery stats wipe. Unplugged it at 12 am, and checked it at 6am. It was already at 86 percent. If it was my glacier, it would be at 95 or more. I also used better battery stats app, and disabled any rouge apps. Juice defender running disabling all data, and system tuner sets the governor to powersave while the screen is off.
For some reason, I can't get the radio settings to stick. It always goes back to gsm whenever I tried to set it to gsm/wcdma prl or anything else.

Yeah, I just stumbled on them in GB as well. I think it's a sense feature rather than a GB feature. I think I remember watching a video showing folders on whatever version of IOS first had them and thought that'd be cool, and one day saw I could do it on my phone. I threw all my games into a games folder.

I split my games into categories (RPG, board, etc). Very useful.
My reception has gotten slightly better, stock ICS with Apex launcher is much smoother than any GB ROM I've tried, and even though I'm not a fan of HTC Sense's overhead, I'm still pretty happy with it
I like the leak. I've been running stock rooted and debloated with apex launcher and its WAY better than 3.0. Especially with Apex.
ICS is MUCH snappier (no placebo). It has everything I liked from 3.5 with improvements in performance.

1. MUCH improved battery life.
2. Snappier response.
3. 150MB less memory usage on average. I've changed nothing about my usage habits. This probably contributes quite a bit to the snappier performance.
I'm not sure if reception is better, haven't really been paying attention. Overall I'm impressed. I like the return to the icon bar instead of that stupid giant PHONE button with two other useless things on it. I am noticing a little bit of stutter on cpu intensive apps; wonder if that's just tweaking/optimization that will be taken care of in the release.
I think my phone reception is a little bit better with the new radio, but my wifi reception has gone crazy with the new radio. Sometimes I'll have full bars sitting in one spot, and 0 wifi bars a minute later in the same spot. I do like ICS a lot more than GB though.
Perhaps those are some of the issues the T-Mobile team wants HTC to fix before the actual release.

[Q] Game performance is worse on all ICS roms

I have tried every ICS rom that has been released thus far for the Evo 3d, but I've decided to go back to GB roms for now due to game performance being sub par on ICS in comparison. A very good example of the performance disparity is X–Men which isn't even a 3d game. The game is unplayable on every ICS rom, but it flies on most gingerbread roms depending on the kernel.
Has anyone else experienced this, or hopefully knows a kernel or mod to help this issue? I love sense 3.6/4.0, but I can't bring myself to sacrifice performance for the sake of a little extra polish.

I'm happy to give you your first Thanks. You 100% correct.
I am going to get severely flamed for what I'm about to say but I'm going to say it anyway.
GingerBread roms on Evo 3D blow ICS out of the water.
Ok I said it. having said that, I do really appreciate all the effort of the devs put into development of the ICS base. I hope to one day actually use an ICS rom as my final daily rom. However, I am stuck on having everything working and not just working but working superbly.
GB has been around for awhile. We had very good kernel developments and stock is not bad either. 3D is important to me. Amaze Camera was a huge upgrade to the Evo 3D camera. Pdroid is awesome. Battery fast charge is cool.
Everyone seems to be waiting for the "Official release of ICS" as though it will be the second coming of Christ, but I have a wait and see attitude towards that.
Kernel devs have moved on and so have some rom devs and lots of peeps moving onto the EVO LTE. Not sure who will stick around and how much development ICS will actually get on this device.
I say if ICS were released first, then they came out with Gingerbread with all the **** it can do, HTC Evo 3D owners would be dancing in the streets.

You won't get any flaming from me. You have to remember that the leak has been out for a month and GB has been out for a year. Like the original stock ROM was, the original ICS leak is very raw. I almost think that HTC released it early for Virgin Mobile so that the VM customers (and us rooted users with the leak) can beta test it for them.
Having said that, the devs have been able to work magic with GB even with the stock kernel (ex: ZR3d 4.1GT absolutely flies with the stock kernel). I know some devs are either staying with the 3d for a while (like MikeyXDA with MeanROM ICS) or have promised to perfect their ICS ROM before leaving for good (like Vin and viperboy with ViperROM). Hopefully they will be able to work their magic and get the ICS ROM on par with the GB ROMs.
ICS does have some phenomenal plusses though, like screen off battery life that barely touches the battery and better sounding audio out of the box.

Very good comment.
Interesting theory on the leak. Yes, perhaps HTC leaked it on purpose to get a feel for what XDA devs would do with it.
I know from reading alot that the #1 advantage to ICS so far has been battery life. I have mixed feelings on this. If you play games and use the phone heavy, your battery life will suck no matter what. There are apps and tweaks you can do on GB that will improve your battery life tremendously. I guess it all depends on how much you use your phone.
Just sitting on standby with screen off, yeah I suppose ICS blows away GB on battery life. I like to put the screen at full brightness and I have a long delay before screen turns off because I find it irritating to have the screen of in 30 seconds.
I have a small stack of batteries, and keep em fully charged. Its a pain but not a big deal really to rotate the charge and swap em out when using the phone heavily. The one thing I would hate about the new EVO 4G LTE is it does NOT have a removable battery. So, if your playing a game or watching movies and the battery dies, you are dead in the water until you can get it back on a charger and then you'd have to wait a long time to bring it back up to a full charge.
The sound on ICS is better. Perhaps, but I don't think the EVO 3D comes with a great speaker. The sound is adequate for me. I didn't find Beats to be a huge improvement although I see that many on here do. I've tried different EQ settings and apps and its limited what you can with the sound.
The X-Loud patch that was done to GB greatly improved the volume problem that plagued the EVO 3D out of the box. One problem I've noted that ICS has with sound is the headphone jack. The ICS leaks sends too much voltage to it. Causes skipping and in some phones causes the phone to dial out the last number dialed. Those who don't use the headphones probably don't experience this. I don't know if this has been tackled and solved or not.
sent from my Commodore 64
Probably depends if your CDMA or GSM, GSM gingerbread performance blew donkey balls if you needed a full rom with everything working..ie sense enabled.

[Q] Why are Stock ICS launchers so choppy?

I have tried every ROM available, senseless or with sense; and whenever I run Apex or Nova, the scrolling is low quality, laggy, and choppy. I've tried setting different scrolling times with no avail. Is their some sort of optimization that stock ics has that sense phones don't? I'd love to know if I can fix the issue, or at least figure out what's causing it.

People's perceptions vary. It's the same for them as it is for you. They've probably never seen the launchers running at a full 60 fps on a Galaxy Nexus and have no clue they're getting subpar performance.
It seems to boil down to unimplemented acceleration for some functions in the graphics driver (if sense doesn't use it, they don't need to support it). Don't bother with the 218 drivers, either, they aren't any better.
i dont know why more people dont use nova.. its the smoothest launcher for me.

That's why I left Apex for LauncherPro. Not ICS, but fast as hell.
I emailed the programmer for Nova and he told me it might have something to do with our leaks not including the proper 3D or graphics libraries.
I do know exactly what you mean, when flipping desktops with Sense, it looks like we get 60 frames per second and it's super smooth. With Apex, Nova or GO, it's still fast but the framerate drops down a LOT.
What's weird is that when opening the app drawer, all those launchers become really fast and really smooth. It's only when flipping desktop pages. Even with no wallpaper scroll it's choppy.
Same problem here. I tried flashing the Adreno 220 update but it lowered benchmark scores and didn't improve the responsiveness of Apex.
Guess I'm stuck with Ultrasmooth Rosie, I don't really like the Sense app drawer (neither 3.6 nor 4.0) but I'll take 60fps over 10fps.

My thought was that the libraries just fell back to software for some functions, and that was why it was slow. We certainly have the necessary library files, but that doesn't mean all the hooks were properly implemented.

For me, the app drawer in Nova is choppy until you get to the widgets section, which is ultra smooth. Apex's app drawer is adequately fast. Both home screens are terrible, though.
This is also quite irksome for me because it also seems to affect Chrome's performance, and I'd really like to use that.
One can only hope at this stage that the official OTA is different and properly accelerates the missing drawing functions.

Actually I have used a Galaxy Nexus, and the only thing that my Rezound does not compare too would be Jelly Bean on the Nexus. I switched things up lately though to sense 3.6 to run Tablet mode again though and I Still dont have any performance issues, Even on Apex Launcher. Both on Sense 4 and on 3.6.
Although I would agree that when running Tablet mode, Nova runs a tad choppy, but Apex is still beasting it!

What about with Chrome? Is your scrolling there 60 fps or does it stutter?
I'm curious about the Droid Incredible 4g now, too. I'm wondering if it does or doesn't have this issue. I pulled the Adreno drivers from its image and tried them and it makes no difference on this phone.

So far its super smooth, I have a friend I work with too that has a Nexus and he says I did a good job setting up. We did side by sides and it keeps up very well with his ICS Nexus, then he Put JB on and I lose lol.
For Chrome I dont know, I never use it, I use stock ICS Browser or even ICS + (The Stock runs better than ICS + [Although I'm sure they are the exact same thing?]). Only issue I have is that stuff shows up kinda small since I'm running Tablet Mode now.
Also what's the purpose of the Adreno drivers? I read the thread on it a while back when they first pulled them from some other device, but dont remember what they were for.

Saying it's "super smooth" doesn't mean anything, because it might mean something different to you than us. I was looking to quantify things. If you know what 60 fps looks like, you can definitely say whether or not you're achieving that. I can say that this phone does not reach 60 fps in the cases I mentioned. A Galaxy Nexus does.
I use ICS Browser+ as well, as it doesn't seem to suffer from the stuttering issue. If you're willing to test, it's simple enough to download Chrome and check if scrolling is smooth like it is in the stock browser or ICS Browser+.
The Adreno drivers are just that: the drivers for the Adreno 200 series of graphics hardware. They are an implementation of EGL and OpenGL ES for the GPU in the phone. The theory was, being newer, that they would be faster or have improved acceleration and/or power management. From testing, I haven't seen any qualitative benefits to using anything other than the stock drivers, and people have said their benchmark numbers aren't any different, either.

I agree with you that saying Super Smooth doesnt really mean much to everyone else, but without any real method of measuring the true FPS at the moment makes it even tougher. Although I can truthfully say that it seems to be matching the smoothness of the Nexus so far, if its not a full 60fps then its pretty DARN close lol.
For Chrome I'll be testing in a few when I get out from work and I'll post what my findings are. Never used Chrome on Phone mode or Tablet mode lol.
I might try out those Drivers see if it makes it even better....ish? Although If you guys havent had much luck with your rezounds then I assume I won't have much luck either. Either way i'll Try that out too. Anyone have a link to it?
Yep, this was the main reason why I stopped using de-sensed roms with apex/nova/trebuchet and switched to sense roms. Just couldn't take the choppiness anymore
Anyone have the latest apk for chrome. I can't get it off the market. Says not compatible. Much thanks in advance

I know everyone loves ICS but GB is faster

Truly is ICS better than Gingerbread in real life [on the EVO 3D]? I find myself flashing multiple ICS roms hoping to gain the smoothness of GB but I just can't find it.
I know the features ICS brings are great:
- Chrome support
- Better sleep management
- Better system/data management (cant confirm this)
- 32 bit color by default (cant confirm this)
But one thing GB has that ICS doesn't is complete capability with our phones. We were able to make GB fly and I feel since Sprint is dragging their feet to release the update, we will have some time before ICS flies like GB. By then Jelly Bean will be running. It's a vicious cycle.
I am all for trying out new software, I love being on the bleeding edge of technology. However, for example, when playing Max Payne on ICS, the joystick would stop responding or the framerate will drop dramatically. That never happened on GB.
So my question is, whats your reason for running ICS on your EVO 3D? It is because its the latest and greatest or is there a certain feature I am missing? Because I am starting not to see a benefit.
**Disclamer: I read a couple of threads related to this but this subject was never expanded on. Mods feel free to close if you think this is redundant.**
I run it because I'm yet to have 1 problem that's not a known ics general issue.

For cdma phones yes, the 2.17 base was an excelent base for GB roms. Us poor GSM users had a crap base which when even overclocked was probably still slower than the current ICS.. for example low 2000 quadrants and 24fps nenamark
I just wish there was a way to use the 2.17 base roms on GSM, I would certainly use it. :good:
ICS runs fine on my phone. And I'm easily getting at least 24 hours per battery, as opposed to 12 hours with GB.
ICS definitely has better battery management. However, for me personally, I don't mind having less battery with more performance since I have multiple batteries I can just swap out. A perfect balance is what I look to achieve. ICS beats GB in terms of battery life but I have to give the best performance title to GB.
Wait until HTC release the kernel sources and we get custom overclocked kernels, will speed it up a little

Considering they haven't yet, what makes you think they will?

There hasn't been an official ICS release? (For CDMA at least). Generally its been a 90 day or so time frame for source release. We should see GSM source in the next couple of months. While HTC isn't the fastest at releasing they haven't ever failed to release source that I'm aware of.

Disagree with this post 100%.
Even though im running a GSM version, i can tell you right now that the phone is 100% different then the GB version. Its faster, smoother, and runs far more efficient. (ive only got 200 mb used of ram, when my GB version was running around 400-450, and i still have to remove junk from my ICS version once i root it.)

Again this is for the GSM version, it may not be true for CDMA phones as i doubt you have one to compare...
I myself believe the fact that their phones run worse on ICS then ours because the same thing was happening to us on GB...
I think for me gb gave me problems with youtube....always skipping in the middle. But going to ics has fixed that. Everything is smoother. Battery life to me isn't much of a problem since I have about two extra batteries.

ICS runs way better than GB did. side by side comparisons of Eternity 1.4.2 vs inbREDed 5.2 verify that for me in an instant.
apps load faster, menus react quicker, etc. I'll never go back to GB and can't wait for an Anthrax kernel for this.
I do wish that the Sense 4 ROM's had 3D and 4G though, because those things run really, really nice.. *sigh*
Interesting feedback, thank you everyone. This is definitely "food for thought".
Whats your feedback on game performance? I usually find myself playing one of the Rockstar or Gameloft games I have purchased and I feel ICS framerates drops much more than GBs.
I feel that since GB's kernel source has been released, devs were able to tweak it for maximum performance under heavy load vs a stock kernel which would be somewhat conservative on performance.
And yes I do have a CDMA version but input from GSM users are welcomed.
Hate to be the one to say it but the second our devices are graced with JB performance and battery life will not just reach the best balance yet, but take both to new levels.
Were in developmental limbo right now, and shortly enough new JB roms will start pumping out, keeping users happy for quite a while

Not everyone will jump on JB. I know I won't. I have good 4G coverage and want to keep that, especially since my speeds have been going up. and I want to keep 3D. So if those aren't present I'm staying on ICS
I really wish we had a stable build of CM7 for CDMA to play with, htc holding the source on ICS kernels has made the ICS dev basically come to a crawl and it saddens me lol... My old Evo4G had a new ROM out everyday it seemed and IMO CM9 was more stable there than on the 3D. Nothing against the wonderful devs here as it's not their fault htc is being stingy with source.

Do not compair roms just on benchmarks... ICS is waaaayy better than gb even without overclocking. Solo many more features in ICS made it impossible for me to go back to GB

I don't actually have an evo, but I've been using an HTC hd2 for a long time, until yesterday.
I was running the latest ics version mostly just to be on the bleeding edge of technology. Their were a few things I really liked more and reasons I wanted to run it because of, but mostly i wanted ics because it was new.
We also had gingerbread roms that were blazing fast and worked almost perfectly. In all honesty they were amazing.
Then ics came along. Many of the drivers were not there for our device and the devs start working like crazy to fix them or write them, just whatever needed to be done.
However even to this day ics does not run as well as gb did. It is very stable, not a lot of fc's but it still has some. In reality its just not yet the same quality gb was.
I think that until HTC releases the kernal source like for the evo and other phones that ics will not run as good as gb. In no way is this in offense to the devs. I just know that its hard to match a companies time and man power when your doing something for free.
In short, unless their is a lot of official support I do not think ics runs as well as gb either.

Placebo Effect?

I have been looking at my girlfriends brand new S3 with stock firmware and i have noticed that ICS is actually smoother than every JB leak i have installed and also smoother than my Omega 26 Rom. My Omega 26 Rom has all of the bloat removed and it doesnt make any difference.
In fact i would go as far to say that hers is smoother than mine!
Im starting to think that all this Rooting and Flashing causes more problems than it might solve!
Smoothness doesn't necessarily mean speed though
Eg. Reset transition speeds to 1 if you have them on 0.5 is a good way of demonstrating what I mean

I've noticed the exact opposite. My girlfriend's phone seems so sluggish with stock ICS compared with my JB ROM. I think JB has been really snappy since at least LI6.

I kinda get what youre saying. I have 3 devices on which I have the new cm10, dli8 and lh1. LH1 wins in all categories except for jellybean smootness of the dli8 leak. ICS is still king.
remember, these are still leaks, may still be bugs...
No. The jellybean is smoother. And cm10 is waaaay faster
People just have different ideas of smoothness. Some people think the Galaxy Nexus with Jelly Bean is smoother than the GS3 with ICS, not a chance, Some stupid people even think that the Iphone 3Gs is smoother than the GS3, which is just plain retarded. Some people think that the iphone 4 and 4s kill even the high end Androids in smoothness, wrong again. Some people think that sense 4.0 isn't a stuttery mess and that the One X is actually close in performance to the GS3, you guessed it, wrong.
Just go with your eyes.
If i were to hazard a guess. AOSP probably has about 30 frames of animation that just cycle every half a second, locked at 60fps. While touchwiz has like 40 frames of animation or more that is usually locked 60fps but not always like JB. So yeah, during the times that ICS touchwiz is at 60 fps, it should appear smoother.
Basically if ICS doesn't drop below 60fps or have memory que issues then technically we wouldn't see project butter. We don't even technically see it. We only notice it when the system chugs, and if project butter kicks in properly, we won't even see that. lol
Well its subjective, you need to ask yourself what do you mean by smoothness? For me its fast respons when opening apps and having no lag or stutterings. For this JB leak li8 does the job
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda app-developers app
people keep raving about how smooth the iphone is but it's noticeably slower than android, esp the high end ones.. the smoothness is just there to cover the lags
I have owned 5 iPhone's and I can tell you now that ios strongest point is the consistently fast transitions. You can move around the OS 10x faster than android. Android is filled with loads of pointless animations and transitions that just make it slower.
I found my problem to be a widget called application manager. It caused a stutter in my transition from Page to Page. I minimised this and now it's smooth.
But I'd still argue that there is no difference between my girlfriends ICS and my JB
