"error 498" - Barnes & Noble Nook Tablet

I've searched, but I can't find any answers on this topic. My rooted NT stopped allowing any updates on any apps from Google. I thought I had solved it by clearing the cache, and it updated a few things, but that was it and it doesn't help any more. Nothing will update, I just keep getting "error 498".

Entered ˝error 498˝ into Google. One of many results:

Thanks., I did that. Several times. That's where I got the idea to clear my cache. I don't know what the "dalvik cache" is or how to find it to clear it. I can't download "Cache Fixer" b/c nothing will download due to the 498 error.
And I can't find any other solutions to this that both make sense, and are relevant to the NT.

I have no idea how to fix this since I have never encountered it myself. Are you running stock or an alternate ROM? If on CM7/9/10, try reflashing the gApps. Worth a try...

I rooted the thing back in Dec. 2012 when I bought it, and I haven't done anything to the OS since then, so I'm running whatever I found here at that time. Huh. Do I have to revert to stock in order to re-root with one of the new OS's? And, er, how do I reflash the gApps?
Sorry for the stupid questions, this is my first-and-only Android device. And might be my last. Or I may take the stupid NT back to stock and just use it to read, and buy a real tablet now that they've come down to a decent price.

You do not need to revert to stock to flash a new ROM version.
I'd suggest flashing cm-10.1.3-RC1-acclaim.zip (http://get.cm/?device=acclaim&type=RC) and Gapps package dated 20130812 (http://goo.im/gapps) using the procedure outlined at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=43326042&postcount=123.

Thank you. I'll give that a shot.

Now. I know I'm not blind

Hey guys. I just got my brand new galaxy s2 and I'm loving it. But as of right now the latest software update is 2.3.6. Now I'm on 2.3.4 and I checked for a software update and it says I'm on the latest software.

My understanding is that AT&T is rolling it out to in waves. Eventually you'll see the update. They just can't, and don't want to, put it out to every [email protected] at the same time.
From what I've read, if you're planning to root your phone, it's much easier and better supported to do it from an earlier version.

AT&T does this in case the update has a problem that missed their QA process.
I'm fairly certain they are rolling out the update fairly slowly - there were even rumors that it might have been pulled for a while. People getting the OTA have had a LOT of complaints.

The reason you see so many 2.3.6 based ROMs in development is because a few developers took a gamble - they guessed that the UCKK6 leak might be a final release that could go official, and they were right. We had access to a full UCKK6 2-3 weeks before anyone received an OTA.
Note that many of those ROMs are appearing to have a few issues:
1) Weird wifi compatibility issues not present in UCKH7
2) Bluetooth HID is broken - no mouse/keyboard pairing

Thanks bro. I appreciate that. Now I'm about to root using either super one click or the zedomax way and I just wanted to confirm this with you. If you root using either Super One Click, or Doomlords version of the zergrush exploit, you will still retain the stock kernel and be able to get the update without additional changes. If you update while rooted, you will retain root on UCKK6.
I'm not sure, but if you use the zedomax kernel to root, you may lose device manager and therefore not be able to check for the update.

Am I supposed to take the battery out or something. It says do not turn off so I'm a bit confused.
You should not interrupt download mode during a flash, of course, because bad things will happen. However, if the flash is finished, or if you put the phone into download mode without starting a flash, just hold down the power button until the download screen goes away, and the boot screen appears. You can also just pull the battery.

That should work fine.

I don't know what would be causing the problem. Some posters indicated that you need to have all the bloatware on the phone, as well as the stock kernel, but I don't know if that is true or not.
I know that when I tested it, I started out on UnNamed. I Used the Odin One-click downloader to put UCKH7 stock plus root, and then updated succesfully. The first time I did it, I forgot to do a data wipe, so after I pulled the files I was getting, I did a data wipe, installed the UCKH7 stock plus root and updated again. The update worked flawlessly on both occasions, retaining root.
So the only thing I can suggest is do a wipe data/factory reset in recovery, install the Return/Unbrick to stock UCKH7 plus root package, and then update. I would think that would clear anything out that would prevent the update.

Broken Wi-Fi

I got my new refurbished phone today and I usually know how to do the whole root process crap, but somewhere along the lines, I must have rushed something. My Wi-Fi is broken. I'm guessing it had something to do with 2.3.4 and 2.3.6 and something to do with a build, but where do I go from here? I tried wiping and I also tried using the Odin 1 click to go back to stock, and it's still broken. Like wtf?

So your wifi is broken. But are you rooted, as you said that's what you're trying to accomplish? If so, what did you use to root? if you've got a custom kernel installed just flash anything you want in CWM.

If you are still on "back to stock" UCKH7 then enter 3e recovery and do a wipe data/factory reset. I know you said you wiped before, but it looks like you did that before you flashed back to stock. So try the wipe again from 3e recovery, and if that does not solve the problem, then let us know as your issue is more serious.
simplicityy, pls do not complicate your life but simplify it by not flash anything.
You wouldn't ask and suffer with the "crap" if you didn't play with it
Here's the help, since you did not want to provide detail info, I assume you KNOW what have done correctly.
Advice, get into recovery, wipe data/factory reset and see if it helps.
I rooted using the back to stock thing, but then I searched tediously and flashed a siyah kernel just to get CWM on the phone.
As of right now, it's on stock UCKH7 but rooted, but without a custom kernel. And I tried wiping using 3e recovery. Wi-Fi still broken.

As for detailed info, what more information would you want that would provide use?

Secondly, brandon has asked you some info, you reply was "I don't remember". You don't remember what you have done, where you get from. That's a sign of problem, m8.
Anyway, I just gave you an advice, take it or leave it.

Not sure what would account for that. I would suggest that you flash stock again. You can choose either the straight stock, or the stock plus root. Redownload the install file of your choice just to make sure you have a good download. Download links are in the guides linked in my signature. Do a wipe data/factory reset both before and after you flash. (for good measure.)
If you still have no working wifi, then I would suggest you start taking steps to see if your hardware is malfunctioning. You might try flashing the full UCKH7 firmware package which includes bootloaders and param.lfs from the Download Repository. Or you might try flashing Entropy512's UCKK6 stock plus root firmware package. Or you might try flashing the UCLE5 stock plus root firmware package that is available in the development section. Remember to do a wipe data/factory reset before flashing any of these firmwares, but read the warnings in the UCLE5 thread.

Depends what you mean by FULLY wiping. I wipe data/factory reset and wipe cache and wipe dalvik cache. If there's some other method of "fully wiping" that I don't know about, please do tell.
Update: I have re-downloaded the one click downloaders to go back to stock, rooted and unrooted. ( I tried both). Wi-Fi is STILL broken. This is getting annoying. It seems like nothing is working. Then again, I was never able to test out the Wi-Fi before I started rooting it. If it's a hardware error, I'm going to be pissed.
A full wipe includes the/system partition as well. Also what ROMS are you currently trying this with?

When I choose to flash a ROM, I flash phone bricker because I used Odin to flash a custom kernel to get CWM and then I use triangle away and flash back to ICScrewed 2.1 or unoriginal. Wi-Fi doesn't work at any moment, whether I am on 2.3.4, 2.3.6, stock, etc.
I still have yet to attempt flashing the second bootloader and param stuff creepyncrawly mentioned, but I've never done that and I know flashing that stuff can brick your phone, so I'm reading up on it so that I don't screw up.

[Q] Why can't i flash a custom rom??

I have the XSG region (uae) model of the S3 9300 and i've had it for over a week by now, I've successfully rooted it without a problem and i love the phone. However, when i comes to installing custom roms that supposedly improve performance and battery life, it's not working out for me.
So far I've tried the Cyanogen mod and the liquidsmooth mod, using odin. With both of those i repeatedly tried installing them and i even wiped the cache and data, but they just end up sitting there at the boot screen, as if i did all this just to stare at a logo! why the hell don't they work?????????????? help please,
Peace

If it is GT-I9300, indeed it is an international model (if it is not faked ).
You should be able to, for instance via CWM or Mobile Odin (to keep root), flash a custom rom. Try to do a factory reset wipe/data wipe and install the rom again. For some roms you also might do a "fix permissions" from your custom recovery after you flashed it (but before you restart the phone).
Looks like you are trying to flash zip files in Odin.
STOP NOW!
Ok note we have sorted that, and before you do anything else, take a step back, and do some reading and learning, starting with the rollup sticky at the top of the general thread.

Rule two is backup your EFS folder before flashing instead of crying later .

If down the line I ever get another phone I will try it then, it has been a headache trying it on this one. I decided to give it one more try yesterday after backing up everything, I used titanium backup and also made a back up in recovery mode, I tried fixing permissions after installing the latest cyanogen mod but it didn't make a difference, it just sat at the stupid boot screen, making my phone warm.. I suppose it's okay if one needs a hand warmer!
My woes did not end there however, as I assumed that since I made a backup i could just restore the phone to the way it was. That did not exactly happen unfortunately, clockwork mod restored the system and image just fine, but when it was restoring data it kept stopping at one file and giving me an "error restoring data" bull****. Great, so I boot the phone and now most of the apps don't work and just crash when I try to run them, the only way to fix them is by uninstalling and then re–installing them one by one! Very inconvenient! And to top it off avast told me I have several "problems" found, I assume that is those apps.
So there it is, I shouldn't have done that to my phone yesterday, it worked beautifully until that point, and I was using nobloat to get rid of the unnecessary stuff, make a rom flash pointless, but I was curious.. And there you go, that is my story, I thank you all for trying to help, and I appreciate it really, but I'm done with this nightmare, at least on this phone i am.
Peace
Ok a quick update:
After repeatedly having an occasional issue with the phone, I decided to go for it one more time, this time I followed your advice to the letter, and I'm happy to report that it Worked! I've installed the liquidsmooth Rom and it works great, except for a few issues which I'll talk about in another more relevant thread. Just wanted to say, I apologize for my earlier posts, I was at my wits end at the time!
Since the custom Rom issue has been resolved, I shall lay this thread to rest and hope others learn from it.
Peace.

Here is your life line to ICS:

Good Luck!
I had upgraded to JB through the CWM back up that was posted. I reverted back to ICS by simply flashing the backup I had made before upgrading.
...I think I may possibly still have the JB radio installed, but everything is working fine anyhow.

Get the right kdz from above linked thread, then follow this thread if you're not familiar on how to flash it. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2085344
I flashed the JB cwm backup, then I went back and flashed the ICS backup I had and when I did that I went into my file explorer and my 'external_sd' wasn't showing up as a directory anymore, it was simply an unrecognized file at the bottom of the directory listing. I've since went back to JB because of that and not knowing how to fix it. anyone have this problem or know what happened?
You have to do a hard reset in order to get back. Look. I know you are new here but you need to start reading the threads and doing your own research, Good luck.

Do you really have to hard reset after restoring a cwm? It replaces everything, if you hard reset after the fact, you lose settings and data.. But if you're switching back and forth using clean backups, hard reset wouldn't hurt. Did you reformat at any time or just had the sd in during?

Although he doesn't have a lot of posts, he's a member since 2008, you've just joined in 2012.. Unless you're referring to him as new to this sub.
Even i wish to go back to ICS coz of the battery issue. Just wanted to clarify whether i will be able to push CWM using fastboot ( I have bootloader unlocked ) and then flash superSU ?

[Q] Flashed wrong rom, can't wipe anymore or boot into a backup

Hey there,
Today I received an MHL-adapter for my Galaxy S3 and wanted to try it out. Since it didn't work in combination with Slim Bean I decided to flash another rom (more on the sammy side of things). Coming across a thread with a guy pointing out a so called Chameleon crossover rom, I decided to give it a go, downloaded and flashed it. I shat bricks as I saw that, in my euphoria to try the adapter, I flashed a rom that was meant to be for the Galaxy S2!
So I restarted into recovery and tried to perform a full wipe, which didn't work, because it wasn't able to load the partitions (data etc.) then I tried to flash on a recent backup of Slim Bean, which was only partly succsessfull, meaning, that it flashed but couldn't wipe because of the reason mentioned above.
Booting into system doesn't work either, I just get a bootloop.
Right now im not quite sure, which step to take. Shall i flash on a clean stock-image via Odin or maybe try out something like One-Click UnBrick?
All your help and suggestions are highly appreciated!

Odion stock. If that fails you'll need to find and flash with a PIT

Thank you so much for the quick response, I'm going to check whether it works and report back after it's done! :good:
G'Luck
Problem solved, thanks rootSU!
So, if someone is following this thread, I just want to share with you guys what I did and how it turned out:
I flashed the original firmware, according to region etc. via Odin, the procedure was succsessfull and I rebooted.
At first I had a bootloop, so I went into the stock recovery and hit "wipe /data and /cache", which was succsessfull as well, meaning that the previous problem with not being able to mount the partitions was resolved. So I went ahead and rebooted again aaand it booted!
Everything is working fine as far as i can tell, no misfunctions, hot reboots or anything similar.
Thanks very much for the quick response rootSU, which prevented me from hyperventilating .
I've rooted, unlocked bootloader and flashed stuff on my former phones (Htc Wildfire, Galaxy S) and I've never done anything like that before and nothing like that ever happened to me. So to anyone reading this, I highly encourage you not to be as dumb as me and to doublecheck what rom you're flashing and not to flash while being overly exicted about anything .
Does your adapter now work?

Never panic. Read lots and dont do anything you don't understand. That's my advice when you're in an S3 pickle
