[Q] Modifying Custom ROMs - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm trying to modify CM 10.2 for Samsung Galaxy S3, and i want to know if i can change the SystemUI.apk and Framework-res.apk with the one from Paranoid Android 3.97. I want to integrate the HALO and other features from PA 3.7 to CM 10.2. Can i do it? or it doesnt work after changing those .apk files.. or is there any other way to integrate HALO into CM 10.2? plz guys help me for this I want to create a hybrid custom ROM...

Its a question of reading and trying .
But you cannot take stuff from a rom without permission of the developer .

No offense but if you have to ask this question you are about 2 years off being able to do it.
This needs to be done at a source code level and is very complex. You will need to important thousands of lines of code into hundreds of Java and c++ source code files. It takes an advanced developer to do this.
Your first step is to build a Linux box and turn it into a build environment and learn how to sync and compile cm code. As I said, 2 years and lots of learning, you may be ready to attempt what you're asking about

Obviously not, no. Like I said "needs to".
This is complex work for an accomplished developer. It is not a newbie thing.
Learn to compile source code first, reading Google and cm guides.

ya, i have read the Google and CM guides to compile the source code and also i have looked to the source code of HALO.. I will be downloading the source code after few days and the main thing is how to implement those source codes of HALO into the CM 10.2? I know i m asking all the questions at a time but m very curious to know all about it..

With 2 years practice!!! Its not a case of copy paste. You must learn to develop. You must learn what the code means. This will take time. There are no shortcuts.

Thanks for all ur help to let me know all about this... i will be working on this project....

Good luck.
Here is a tip.
Once you learn to compile cm for your phone with no errors, flash and fully functional... then look for some small commits. Maybe try to add "seconds" to the status bar clock for example.
It might just be 1 line of code to edit in 1 file. Easy yes? But then think... what if the entire line if code doesn't exist? Imagine - the clock must be managed by some code. As a developer you must learn how to understand the code, work out how you can adapt the code to work with your source. This is the tricky bit and that is 1 simple commit.
Now imagine you want to add one of the most complicated and biggest android development commits of all time.... hundreds of lines of code you need to edit don't exist. You can't just add them. You learn to adapt by understanding your code and the thousands of lines of code in halo. Let alone to mention several of the files you need to edit to add halo don't even exist in cm...

Andy, can u post the URL of the manifest of your sources?.. i m learning to develop android and would be helpful if you provide the URL.
Also how much is the size of the repo of urs? I am using virtualbox and want to decide the size of the virtual hd.
The virtual hdd have to be at least 50GB in its size.
I dont have a manifest.xml because i dont have a full repo nor provide
the full android sources but only modified code.
If you want to start with developmen on android, dont download not working
code, dont download the OS sources - it doesnt makes you happy after/when
compiling - better start with pure simple android apps to understand what is
android, how works android and what do i need to modify sources for my ideas.
if you really want to develop on the OS itself, i recommend to use a working tree
like AOSP Gingerbread or CM7 Gingerbread. ICS is still in early alpha, almost nothing
is working... it brings even nothing to write a lot of posts in development forums,
most developers doesnt spend time in answering "noob" questions, so its better
to learn step by step.

It's very good advice, when I knew ICS was about to be released I downloaded all the CM7 sources to be ready. I looked at Mik's thunderg sources, compared it to some other phones and just went through all of it to see how it works. I have a small notepad in which I wrote down what each file is for, why some things are changed for our phone and 'remade' CM7 for myself.
It means that when I look at the ICS code I still don't understand everything, but my head doesn't immediately explode when trying to work out why it doesn't work

wich is going to be based on the stock verision of ICS by Sony
some may know me from my modded x10 ROM. wich was not a big succes
now i want to begin again for xperia S with some people to help
first things first we need a base for our rom
on what is it going to be based? stock is a big start it has most of the ROM already done.
then we will try to get a kernel or use other kernels by other people
if you are interested please reply!

Is it anything specific you don't like about those ROMs, or are you doing this for education?
For now, I can help testing if the ROM is stable enough for usage (SMS, GSM and wifi).
I can help out with build prop tweaks and any icons or anything we need done. I am still learning the android programming side so I wouldn't be of much help there.
Miui is based heavily on Cyanogenmod, so we'd need to have major progress on that before making any move onto that. As for what would be interesting would be a heavily customisable 'build your own ROM'.
I'd envisage large file, but one that you can select the features of, from theme to audio ports, tweaks, keyboards and the like, and one that you can clean up easily after flashing.
Thoughts?

Then you should decide what are you going to do. Either you work with MIUI/stock and modify, theme and whatnot, or you work from source and build your own version of AOSP. The latter allows more, but also needs more knowledge.

What is AOSP and AOKP?

Hi all, What is AOSP and AOKP based of rom? what is the different?
AOSP stands for Android Open Source Project. This is a 'pure' build and AOKP stands for Android Open Kang Project. This has features like rom control so you can do that little bit extra with your device

-AOSP stands for Android Open Source Project, and it is headed by Google.
-CYANOGENMOD (CM) is based on AOSP with their own customizations. It is headed by CM team.
-AOKP stands for Android Open Kang Project. It's based on CYANOGEN MOD with their own (more) customizations. It's headed by AOKP team.
***So in summary, ***
-AOKP is more customizable than CYANOGENMOD, faster but a bit less stable than CYANOGENMOD.
-AOKP is compatible with almost any MOD made for CM Roms e.g Themes.
-Any bug present in CYANOGENMOD will also be present in corresponding AOKP version and thus on all AOKP based Roms.
-because AOKP contain it's own bugs + the native bugs present in it's parent CYANOGENMOD, it is a little less stable than corresponding CYANOGENMOD.
I hope this helps everyone.

[q]What programing skills do i need for compiling android from source

Hello i would like to make my first steps as an android developer..i know this **** is difficult and i know you should learn many staff about os stractures etc and of cource a good understanding of some programming[c java]... but i am intrigued by those things[i am also starting my studies about programming in university] but i dont know where to start and what exactly should i learn to have a good understanding about android and be ready to start compiling. building and porting android source to some devices[i know it will take some time but i dont care as i really like programming ]
[ i know some basic stuff about roms kitchens logcat porting and i have really basic level of programing skills [ but i suppose that is not enough]
The only skill required for compiling a rom is reading. There are thousands of tutorials about how to do this.
Porting ROMs to different devices will require some more skill, I think most of the difficulty is in the C part although I personally don't have experience with this.
Most important thing is java
if you successfully compiled ROM and found bugs like FC
you will find it very hard to fix
learn java then continue and then follow the guide by @jackeagle and his awesome team

Yup
But you must don't forget
android 50% of it is apps
Java required for help in fixing bugs in your ROM
For example if you have FC while choosing an option in settings
What you should do ?
Let's think a bit
Settings at the it is an apk file
apk = android app = written with java = can fixed with java
don't go to final phase fast
Start from zero and learn Java and then you can start with ROM development
and then Learn c/c++ then start with kernel development
Do that and make your life easier
you will find that hard a bit in the begins (nothing easy in this life and nothing impossible)
but at the end you will find your self an expert
Hit thanks if i helped you

The future of development on LG L9II ( d605 )

I'm just decide to create this thread because comunity for our device isn't very big.
That means if we want make some progress on it, we need to team up.
Few folks ask for rom build howto.
I just push few tools and wrote some hints into wiki.

So if somebody got and idea or like to start some rom hacking for d605
this thread would be best for discussion about that.

Ok, so here is what I tried.
Multirom - Stuck at porting hardboot patch to kernel. Achieved some kind of dualbooting by symlinking part of fstab (userdata and system) to cache and properly loading it at init scripts. This but won't work with cm12, so now using recovery partition to boot cm12 at emmc and boot partition to boot cm11 at sdcard.
AOSP 4.4.4 - Strange issues at building qcom hw sources, after some dirty patching wont boot. Stuck at bootanim
AOSP 5.0.3 - Same weird bug as CM12 if setenforce 0 is called. Stuck at bootanim because of incomplete sepolicy
AOKP 4.4.4 - Stuck at bootanim because of libs exceptions
Omnirom 4.4.4 - Works but having some bugs, apk won't install properly.
CM 11M 4.4.4 - Works best for now
CM 12 5.0.2 - After Varcain released devicetree source, builds and boots ok. But got still problem with modem/radio and selinux (if disabled, immediately kernel panic appears )
My opinion is that you should focus on improving roms that already work. By that i mean cm11, paranoid or omnirom. Of course, lollipop would be great but i cant see it working in the near future.
Ive been using the omnirom, since you PMed us for beta testing and i must say im impressed by the smothness and how it works generally. I dont really use omni switch, it just works best in my experience. Plenty of free ram, enough costumization by default and few other tricks make this rom my daily driver. With app libs taken from cm11, ive got a perfectly usable rom.
Some kind of Frankenstein with paranoids overclockable kernel, cm base with theme support and omnis dynamic status bar (works much better than any xposed module) would be a keeper. Dunno if its possible but id like to see a rom like that in future.
That's the kind of feedback I've looking for. On overclocking I'm with Varcain, that d605 is alredy overclocked. Now I testing compiler optimizations and outcome looking good.

Hi puresoul_cz!!!
I just found this using google...indeed, the community of d605 users is really small
So, I am happy to see somebody, who is trying to get these people together, as I am an owner of this phone as well.
I would be glad to join you.So far, I only have experience with app building for android.
PM me, and I'll give you my google mail adress, so we can discuss this further
I am from Rimavska Sobota, Slovakia by the way....
nice to see you aboard

So what's new.
I've clean up useless apps from cm11 rom, change Appolo music player by MusicFX. Set up compile optimizations with SaberMod 4.8 toolchain. Few more free ram by cmdline optimization.
What's comming next,
Just start diging into IR driver. Some elementary work done by Varcain, but still don't know how to blink with it.
Porting stuff from stock rom and cleaning init scripts.
Using front cam as light/motion sensor to mimic some proxymity sensor features.

Best app for using front camera as light sensor is lux dash. Will be able to add more function to left special button like on stock?
Right now I don't know. For now it's just an possible things to implement. But still need ti dig in HAL and stuff around...

Hey pure, when you release the next version of omnirom?
so, my final decision was to base my work on CM11 source, clean up it from useless CM bloat and port only some apps from Omnirom source. Because the libs problem with rom I don't base my future work on that source.
And to answer your question, for now I think there is only few changes to release it and for now it needs some testing. I may build some testing release if someone like to try it.

Is there a chance you could implement dynamic status bar colors from omni?
