[Q] State the differences - AT&T LG Optimus G

Hi Guys!
I will be getting my AT&T unlocked OG e970 next week. My previous device was HTC Desire S and I used it's official xda section to get answers and stuff... I came here to xda in search of a dedicated forum for the e970 model and was surprised to see only a single OG forum for multiple variants of this device.
As the hardware specs are more are less the same except the dimensions, camera and modem versions, I am kind of left wondering what features (either software/hardware) are drawing the line between these models.
Things I know so far
1. There are 2 variants for the device (International and regional)
2. Different radios (modems) can't be flashed across the devices. Eg., Flashing e975 Europe's radio onto an AT&T e970 as this would cause disruption in networks and connections such as 3G.
Things I would like to know
1. Are the radios of different models for the same region cross compatible? Eg., Is it possible to use the radio of Europe's e975 onto an Europe's e973?
2. Apart from mere hardware changes what are the features present/absent in the various versions (e970,e975,etc) of this device. Do they have any additional standout features such as qmemo, "see through lockscreen", irblaster (as in G Pro). If so what are the unique features of different models?
I've seen various review videos and articles and nothing seems to highlight the uniqueness of various versions of this phone other than that 13/8 MP camera.
So if you own one of these models of OG and happen to bump into this thread, kindly spare a few minutes of your time to clarify my doubts and many others out there too
Thanks

there are multiple threads for the LGOG phones, you just happen to have posted in the AT&T thread, which is the E970.
international forum (e975) includes canadian variants (e971-e973) http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=1838
sprint LGOG http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=1928

Our standout feature is an SD card slot, my main reason for preferring this model. Also, having hardware keys is nice (compared to google nexus 4, aka mako ) which is exactly this phone, but with the other two options reversed. We can flash mako radios, but theres little reason to do so, but there are hybrid radios that use core parts of ours with updates revisions from the google side. I haven't used stock rom in so long I have no idea what would be different, if anything among the stock features. Poke around the forums, including the nexus 4 forum and get your read on for whatever it is you're looking for.

Thanks for the info

Hi GimP, thanks for the info on availability of various forums for various variants. And yes, I forgot to mention about the SD card slot. Before reading your reply, I thought each one of the model eg., e970 had an international variant and a regional variant. Thanks for clearing things up for me. Although your answer was helpful what I expected to know was the presence of special feature available on the different regional models (like the indian e975 which has native fm support, the korean models which can receive free to air TV channels, etc) like that.
But thanks anyway

[Q] Which variant do you have?

I'm considering purchasing a Player 4.0 or 5.0 (Very likely a 5.0), partly as a bit of a hacktoy since there are no custom kernels for it. However I am curious how many users there are of the particular variants, since this forum covers AT LEAST four different devices: 4.0 US and International, and 5.0 US and International.
As a resident of the States, I'd be getting a U.S. variant, which is why this poll might be a bit U.S. biased by possibly lumping multiple international variants together. As i understand it, only one of the International variants has a custom kernel series going for it.
So - which version do people own?
I have the 4.0 US but apparently the majority of people have the International versions because it seems that the little development going on is for them
I have the 4.0 US version as well. It would be so sweet to finally have a developer for our device!

I think it's partly because the international versions have been around MUCH longer, and they're not being marketed in the US much at all.
I've got the US 5.0 and love it. I rooted with SuperOneClick, used Tegrak to overclock just slightly to 1.1 from 1 to smooth out Netflix (audio didn't sync with video at stock speed, does now). I don't really miss not having custom ROMs to experiment with but I've got a rooted Nook Color and several older Android phones for that.
See clarification in next post down
So, just for clarity, the differences between the devices are?:
Galaxy S Wifi 4.0 = YP-GB1 (and presumably also the YP-G1?)
Galaxy S Wifi 5.0 = YP-G70 and YP-GB70 (my UK version with a physical home key is a YP-G70CW, so is the YP-GB70 the US version with all capacitive keys)
Galaxy Player 50 (3.2" screen) = YP-GB50
US versions have all capacitive keys at the bottom of the screen, no hdmi out. Does that hold for both the 4.0 and 5.0?
International versions have a single physical home key between the two capacitive keys at the bottom of the screen, no hdmi out. Again is that true for the 4.0 as well as my 5.0?
My understanding is that there's also a Korean version which has a mini-hdmi out port, no idea what the product code is for that nor what the keys are like.
If you look at the opensource.samsung.com website under "Mobile > MP3 Player & Etc." is shows a choice of product codes to choose from.

Actually, YP-GB1 and YP-GB70 are the korean versions of the players, which have an antenna and hdmi out. If you look here, http://www.samsung.com/us/mobile/mp3-players, the galaxy player 4.0 is YP-G1CWY and the 5.0 is YP-G70C.
Using the international YP-G70 version
Probably going for the 5.0 due to personal preference.
For the US-based players, there is a single source tree download for both devices.
In addition, the source tree has defconfigs for international variants. Supporting International devices may be a simple defconfig change, just like I9100 vs I777. It may even be possible to build Korean kernels from the source.
The US 5.0 will, of course be the only one tested. I need to consider my strategy with regards to blind development.

Got the US 5.0 and bought one for my son as well. I bought his a couple of days after Xmas and Best Buy was sold out of them in three different stores - bought the last one at the fourth store. So it must be a fair sales performer.
It sure would be nice to get some ROM's for this. CyanogenMod would be great.
AOSP bringups are tough - although a deodex job shouldn't be hard.
I'm more of a hardware/kernel guy than a userspace guy. Even extended power menu mods aren't easy for me.
Turns out the US 5.0 variant has the MC1N2, not the WM8994.
Actually, looks like both 5.0 variants...

It was a big let down for me to find out that it has a Yamaha DAC instead of the Wolfson. The only possible tweak seems to be a fix called Voodoo LOUDER fix by supercurio, but the fix is not ported to Galaxy Player yet.
Voodoo LOUDER only gets you 6 dB volume.
Considering that with my earbuds, half volume on media player + half volume of the earbud volume control is damn loud, no real need for that.
I have an international G70CW/XAZ version (for Brazil).
YP-G70CW/WON in Peru
The one I got off the US website Woot.com is a an international YP-G70CW/TTT
I fully bricked it. It's soft bricked now due to Android booting errors and I can't find an original Froyo 2.2.2 pit file to back track out of the bad GB update. The rom offered in one thread does not repartition successfully in Odin so I assume the file is not there.
I'm looking to manually fix the offending partitions if I could figure out what they were.

My week just got a bit better. Soooo much more development is going on for this player! You made an excellent choice. I am looking forward to more of your work. I never realized you didn't even have a player. I use your kernel, and enjoy it quite a bit. Thank you for all of your work and am looking forward to more.
Wow just saw how old this post is... Well thank you for tour kernel lol

[Q] 2GB Variants and Rom Compatibility

So Samsung Canada has officially announced that all the Canadian versions are going to be just like the Japanese one with the Snapdragon CPU for LTE support and 2GBs of ram, at a glance it appears that everything else under the hood should be the same more or less (obviously dont know for sure but just guessing) so What Im wondering is will the firmwares be the same for these 2GB varients or will there be enough differences that the modding and development area of the S III will differ to the point that anything made for the GT-I9300 wont work on these models?
Naturally the assumed answer would be no, such as the custom SGS2's that have 4 touch buttons and no home key compared to the international model, however all S III's appear to all be the same layout of 2 touch 1 home and same phone design ect, just different CPU and amount of ram inside the phone.
+1 for this question, this will make if I buy or not the phone
The amount of memory is the least of your concerns.
The device is using a completely different chipset, it uses a Qualcomm Snapdragon S4, so no, firmware/roms made for the GT-i9300 will not work on the version you're getting, not even the HSPA+ one.
But i'm sure there will still be a lot of support for doing custom roms on your versions as well
This has always been the case... anything for the "I " will have to be ported to work on north American variants... there will be different modems/kernels ...international will get updates first and certain things will be pulled to build roms for us.
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA
Both of them are based on different soc. international version is using the exynos chipset
and the lte version is using the qualcom chipset. so the roms would be totally different
What I think he's asking is whether or not the Canadian and Japanese (for example) versions will be firmware-compatible, as they both will get the alternate SoC and memory, not the international version...
It's a question without an answer. All we can do is guess, and not educated ones. We'll have to wait and see.

Actually its both, I guess I should of worded this better with more details lol.
But my main thoughts were dev work on the international GT-I9300 and mods/addons etc working on the LTE 2GB varient (since at a glance it looks like they are the same phones but with different CPU/Ram), also as well Japanese/Canada/USA versions working together since it looks like all 3 countrys are getting the same model phones with the same hardware (different model numbers though because of branding purposes but same hardware inside the phone).
Im not looking for custom roms though my main thoughts are small addons that you generally see in the themes and apps section and the huge following that you see with the S II and constant checking and usage with new firmwares for the shake of improving everyones device, and most important of all CF-Root for the device. My concern is that most of the dev's will be putting the work and effort into the international model and not the other ones so I will be SOL unless I get the international model (which is why the question in the first place), but heres the other thing that bothers me with that...
It feels like its not worth the upgrade (hardware wise), everything is the same except 200MHz faster CPU with a couple extra cores that most apps probably wont take advantage of for some time to come, and a 720p HD screen which is nice but not really necessary. The S III feels more like a software upgrade rather then a hardware one (amazing software and improvements Samsung has done for the device over the S II for sure), but to me it feels like its not worth it unless your getting all the hardware improved upon aswell, like were just re-buying our S II's because its "shinier" with new and improved software lol.
Doesn't anyone else feel that the S III should of been not only a CPU upgrade but double the ram, improved MP's on the front and back camera's etc etc?
So with all that in mind atleast for me it feels like if im to get the upgrade it should actually be a nice upgrade (hardware wise) you know what I mean?
Well, our opinions appear to differ a lot on the subject, but I have no interest on elaborating on them yet again.
However, for rooting, for the SGS3 something like CF-Root is not needed due to the separate kernel and recovery partitions. You flash a modified recovery (once) then root through that.
Future firmwares can then be flashed with Mobile ODIN (which can root during flash), or (again) through the recovery, if you didn't overwrite it.

No I ment both. Compared to the international model and as well between the same alternate ones that are the same.
Pretty much don't want to get the 2GB ram model if most of the development is only for the international model, however getting the normal one over my S II feels like I'm practically getting a small upgrade if the ram isn't getting doubled among other things.

Different SGS3's and why?

I've noticed talk of different SGS3's in certain countries, sorry if this sounds a bit of a stupid question but I'm confused.
What are the differences between these devices, and why are there differences? Why not just ship the exact same handset worldwide?
Thanks
Sent from my Samsung Galaxy S3 using XDA Premium
Except for north America they are just different firmware. Hardware is the same.
The reason is different languages, modems and in some cases locked to a certain carrier or with carrier branded firmware.
Sent from my GT-I9300 using Tapatalk 2
The reason I'm confused is because I've noticed some people saying they bricked their phone because they accidentally followed the root instructions for the international version (something like that anyway).
Also I'm sure I read somewhere that the international SGS3 has a different (better?) processor. Is this true?
Sent from my Samsung Galaxy S3 using XDA Premium
The International version Uses - Quad Core &1GB RAM
The American version Uses - Dual Core & 2GB RAM - Due to LTE being a battery hog - LTE is super fast internet
The Korean Version Uses - Quad Core & 2GB RAM - Don't know why they got that maybe because its Samsung's home town - Brown Nose
Anyway there all the same on the outside. That's all i can tell you but I'm sure somebody else will fill you in
My name is Optimus Prime and I send this message..
Hardware is different - as already stated - so drivers from the international I9300 won't work on those and hence "brick" it.
Firmware / ROM / OS / whateveryoucallit differs a lot on those models too, down to the partition layout. It's a nightmare what Sammy did there this time.

So, no hope for anything resembling, hellraised rom or at least framework for these, right?
Sent from my SGH-I747M
NA SGS3's use the qcom S4 over the exynos quad, thus roms and kernels will not work across them, and flashing an international rom on a NA phone will brick it.
There is no foreseeable way to simply and easily port roms across (aka nothing as easy as hellraising).

Having an Unlocked Bootloader

so whats the point in having an unlcocked bootloader if you cant even do anything to it..
i have the tmobile version of the galaxy s3 which only has 2 roms available
we cant flash any international roms onto the phone.
when i had the htc sensation i unlocked the bootloader and got s-off
and was flashing international stuff/roms
why cant we do that with the galaxy s3???
i know ill probably get lots of hate on this
or this has already been posted, sorry if
it has..
The international version has different hardware. It has the Exynos processor and Mali GPU. The US versions have the Snapdragon SoC. This requires different code optimization and different communication interfaces for each hardware component. There are actually a lot of little differences in the hardware, most because of the Exynos vs. Snapdragon CPUs and the way it interfaces with the hardware.
For example, both versions have the same LEDs and everything, but the Light Flow dev(s?) had a problem getting the US S3 to work even though the international one worked. In fact, I'm not sure if Light Flow is fixed yet for the US S3. And that's just one of the minor differences. More important components could cause huge problems.
I'm willing to bet that the Sensation had all the same hardware, international or not, but the radios were a little different. If that were the case with the S3, then yeah, we could use international ROMs. Different processors (and most likely, different motherboards, too) make a huge difference.
There are more roms than that. Flash cyanogen 9, 10, aokp, or redrum or team sonic's to name a few
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda premium
At this point, you can't even flash Roms across different US carriers much less the international version. Which really is an almost completely different phone.

[Q] China android phone with custom rom

Hi,
I'm willing to buy a new Android phone.
I'm not so excited about the prices of current flagships models (S3, S4, Nexus, HTC One, etc.) but I like their hardware (obviously!).
About one month ago I discovered a whole bunch of Android phones from China. Their specs are amazing (beside the processors, MTKXXXX).
What I'm asking here is:
is there a phone from these China makers which has:
- a decent processor (not MTK series)
- current flagship phones hardware (1-2gb ram, quad core processor, decent front/back camera, various sensors, etc.)
- availability outside China (I'm from Italy)
- support for custom roms (like Cyanogenmod or any AOSP/AOKP)
?
Thank you
Take a look at Oppo, Meizu and the like. They have great specs and some models are made not only for China but for the rest of the world as well.

Biggest reason that most don't buy those phones is there is no trust of knock off devices.
OP you may find roms for them on other sites but you will not find any here.

Also, not all of the Chinese smartphones are intended for external market.
Thank you for your answers.
I've asked this question because I'm interested in having a decent piece of hardware (I don't care if it's a knockoff of another phone or if it has original design) AND a ROM that is not the original one. I've read they're full of chinese bloatware and bugs, so the combination I'm looking for is a decent hardware and a rom made by other developers than chinese one (a cyanogenmod?)
But if there is no support here at XDA for any of these phones I think it's not worth to buy any one of those phones.
Bootlaoder language written in chinese
Hi,
I wanted to install ROM but after putting the tablet in bootloader mode, I discovered the language is Chinese. I took picture and is attached here. Any help interpreting or changing to English? This is just frustrating.
It one of those generic tablets made by Speed. The model is MB-Z5S.
