Hello,
Just had some questions about the RAZR / RAZR MAXX and the laptop dock.
1. Does VZW require a tethering plan for use with the dock?
2. Just how awful is the webtop experience? Is it at least partially usable when it is using the actual phone interface in full screen / landscape mode?
3. Are there any existing roms that make the webtop more efficient / usable?
4. Do you think there is any chance of ICS redeeming the webtop setup?
5. Finally what is the actual battery life of the MAXX?
Thanks.

I can only answer to the battery life which is outstanding. I am a light to moderate user depending on the day. I am at 21 hrs and still have 60% battery left. I have used it lightly since it has been off the charger and through the night. I have almost 2 hrs of screen on time, some email and texts, about 30 mins of phone time and very light gaming. I would easily get 20-24 hrs with heavier use.
Have had my Maxx for three days now. Battery is simply amazing. Far better than my iPhone 4s. Also better than my EVO with extended battery.
According to the Rep at the store, you do not need a tethering plan with the dock. The dock and the phone function as one device. Not two separate internet connected devices.

That is good to know. At&t wanted us to have to pay for tethering on the ATRIX when it and the lapdock first came out.
My solution to all of this was going to be the Asus Padphone but it seems somewhat lackluster.
I think the best way to have this done is to implement a generic laptop / tablet dock that works for all phones, has a storage compartment and a few flexible ribbon cables that use MHL / HDMI and transfer input back via bluetooth. It really isn't that far fetched now, ICS does most of that work already.

That pretty much sounds like the current dock for motorola phones including the Razr except that it uses the microUSB for input or you can use the bluetooth that is already part of the phone for input as well. The current dock uses a generic holder to hold the phone and a flex cable that plugs into the usb and hdmi on the phone. I was even able to succesfully plug it into my old Droid X however triggering the hdmi out on that did not "wake" the lapdock up. Probably something that's triggered through recognizing a supported phone.
I have a regular razr and the lapdock. It all works as one device, you get your signal and data through your phone. I am enjoying the lapdock. Works well and is super convenient when playing on your device for long periods of time. The much bigger screen and keyboard ( and a wireless mouse) make it so much enjoyable and easier to play/mod/etc. etc. with. The best part was the great deal I got on it.
Wasn't impressed with the Lapdock
I got a Lapdock 500 Pro as a great deal and tried it out, but I wasn't impressed. It's great for watching videos from your phone, ok for surfing online, and if you have to access a Citrix server, but not much else. Texting from it is buggy, and mostly you just access the phone's screen that's mirrored on the lapdock screen. I'm selling mine.
It does run off your phone's data connection, so whatever your phone is using is fine. It has a built-in battery that recharges the phone, which is convenient.
Outside of the lapdock, I use my Razr Maxx moderately for texting and occasionally playing games or checking email. If I unplug it by 8am, it usually still has at least 60% battery by 5pm. I keep it on wifi and use the Smart Actions to turn off background sync while the screen is off and it's sitting on the desk.

That is what I think they should have done from the beginning. Just simply mirrored the Phone's screen instead of trying to create an OS that the phone cannot run properly. Now with ICS, Onlive / Onlive Desktop, Splashtop and other software there is no longer a need to have a "desktop OS" on your phone because Android is pretty much there already.
I was hoping that Moto would just abandon webtop and simply make the phone mirror itself to the lapdock with ICS. That's what the Padphone does. But unfortunately the padphone has pretty weak specs on the actual phone.

The main problem I am seeing is the 1520 mAh battery. That pretty much ensures that you are going to have to either drag a charger or the paddock around all day. Or cut out part of the dock to squeeze an enormous extended battery into.
The best solution would be for a third party manufacturer to create a tablet dock using a combination of MHL, HDMI and Bluetooth as to be universally adaptable among all ICS phones, not just moto ones.
Are you satisfied with your Huawei mediatap.
I'm considering buying one, but i noticed that the samsung galaxy tap 2 7", is costing almost the same, where i live. This version of the galaxy doesn't have 3g. But I'm not going to use 3g, but it's nice have though. What would you choose, if you had the choice?
Mediapad is a real value for the money. But still this has a small user base, so still lacks good community support. There is no good custom rom so far. In my country Mediapad with ICS costs the same as The Samsung tab 2 7". But the HC version of Mediapad costs less, and it only takes 5 mn to upgrade to ICS.
Sent from my HUAWEI MediaPad using XDA Premium HD app
I have the Springboard from TMobile and find it to be a great device for my needs. I like the cellular capabilities and use it in the car as a GPS. Overall I'm very satisfied and once Huawei releases the source code for ICS the custom ROM's will start to show up. For now I'm rooted and running a stripped down ROM.
the samsung galaxy tab 2 without 3g is 30% cheaper here, the one with 3g the same price.
BUT the samsung has 1024 x 600 display, proprietary Samsung connector so no hdmi and usb. That should be enough to look somewhere else.
edit,-
Forgot that with samsung tab you also need to buy an overpriced connector if you want to hook it up with hdmi to a tv.
Then you need to plug in the samsung power cord to the hdtv connector, then plug the hdtv connector to the tab, then the hdmi cable to the hdtv connector. The tab needs to be powered\charging while connected to a tv.
I really don't like those small proprietary connectors, either they are not at hand when needed or get lost.
Thanks
I read in magazine review today. That the touch screen isn't that well, and that you sometimes have to press twice. Is this also what you have experienced, or is it and old fw issue.

Compared to the fw that came with the tablet, it improves a lot... But still not on par with the likes of Samsung, HTC or other well known brands. Depending on the apps, yes, sometimes the touch won't register.. basically the screen/driver setting is too sensitive thus sometimes touch is registered as swipe. It isn't a big problem though, just a small annoyance. Right now I'm posting this from mediapad and I can type comfortably.
Basically both are good tablet for the money, but I like the fact that mediapad have separate input for the power, HDMI, and USB. The higher dpi screen also very nice... Less zooming needed when you're browsing the net.
I bought one a month ago or so and I can tell that it is a great device with great potential... H/W specs are excellent (especially the screen resolution, cpu and ram), There are already two major custom ICS roms that doesn't do much, but offers a lighter os and the remove of all Huawei apps that you may never use and just consume free space. And the best thing is the price... It's quite cheap for what it offers and the device doesn't give you a "chinese" product quality (in fact it is excellent). It could answer lots of your questions if you read the review at the gsmarena.com.
I'm very happy with mine. I've had it for 3 months or so. I really like the mini usb and hdmi ports which galaxy does not have , screen is not quite as responsive as the galaxy, and some apps are not available in play store that are available for galaxy, but there are workarounds for those. All that in mind, I think you would be happy with either purchase.
I am satisfied with mediapad, in my country the price is much cheaper than the samsung tab 2 (3G). with the same spec, mediapad much better and elegant. (No bundling system in my country)
Just got one pre-owned 2 days ago, good so far
I got a used unit 2 days ago, put in a broadband SIM, and working great so far. Primary use as browsing device and book reader.
Upgraded to C232B005 as well, pretty good. Giving it a good spin over the next few days. Charging via USB works with my existing Galaxy Note 1A charger.
Hey guys,
with the release of XBMC for android MHL and TV Out got a lot more interesting for me, and for probably many others out there.
I really like the idea, and I've spend the last days to get into it. Sadly the AOKP and AOSP Roms don't support MHL yet (and probably never will), but with Siyahs kernel we can set up a dual boot situation with a Samsung ICS Rom as the MHL option. My choice is WanamLite V12.4, which works great.
As for the MHL adapter i bought the cheapest one I could find on amazon. Was about 7,50 €.
Now here's the question-part of my question: There is one major flaw in the setup at the moment, which is the phones screen being on the whole time MHL is streaming. I understand that MHL is just mirroring what the phone displays, but can anyone think of a way to turn of the screen? The problem is that the power consumption is ultra high (overall drain is bigger than the recharge!), and the phones screen being off, or dimmed, would probably help a lot.
Would be happy to get a discussion about this, and all other MHL and XBMC related thoughts! Cheers!

If your issue is about battery drain bigger than than recharge, then you can increase the charging currents via Extweaks since you are running Siyah.
About screen on, I'm sorry, I can't help.
Swyped from Samsung Galaxy SII

Yap, just got behind that as well! Thank you! With the usb-charginb current set to 650mA (max) the discharging rate is slowed down to an usable rate. After streaming a 30 minute clip from the internet to the TV Out there was a negative charge of 4%. Totally acceptable!
Now, to keep things rolling, something very f***ed up just happened... I have a bluetooth headset attached to the phone while on HDMI to answer calls when watching something hassle free. Now a call just came in, it first rang through the tv, then through the phone, then I answered on the headset. Talked a little without problems. Then when i wanted to return to my stream I had to realise the picture on the Tv wasnt showing anymore. After further inspection it seems like my freaking 5.1 digital receiver, which the TV Out was connected to, is blown! It doesn't work anymore! F***ing birdcrap! Maybe, i thought, the soundlevels for media output and ringer volume were set differently, but I just checked and the ringer volume is set just marginally higher than the media volume... don't know what just happened, but everybody please be careful with that stuff! I just lost my trustworthy receiver
Hello, I got a xperia z2 D6503 I guess but got water damage and screen is dead so replaced it and after month touch lost its sensivity in some regions which makes it completely unuseable, But I invested good some of cash in it and don't want to waste them or even invest more on fixing it, So I live in front of 5 Stars hotel with outstanding WiFi which over x20 my internet speed in both down and upload and since I used to download with phone due to strong WiFi in z2 so I was wondering method that I can do it again with mirorring and etc, Or make its quad core Cpu and 3gb ram boost pc performance, Just need a list I make me cable of using phone. Also I got Htc m9, Samsung note 8.0 which I use it in samething and in processing simple stuff,Studying storage etc..., Thanks in advanced
@Tammz
Why not get an MHL adapter and a bluetooth mouse/keyb combo, plug phone to your tv/monitor and use it as a "desktop" ?
I use my z2 with an MHL adapter and ps3 gamepad to play all my favorite old emulator games eheh
Screen mirroring / airdroid is not fast enough for gaming but mhl is nice.
Hello,
I have a more obscure Android device, a Nikon Coolpix S800c. It is a mediocre camera, and a terrible Android device. The biggest issue is that the camera cannot be used while charging, which is an issue in a device with about a 90 minute battery. It is also running Android 2.3.
These are my questions: Is it possible to hack the camera so I can use it while charging (it charges with a USB cable)? Also, is there any custom rom with a more recent version of android than Gingerbread that I can use (To be honest, I'd like anything newer...)?
Thank you!
