I have the phone in the title on 4.04 and is unlocked and rooted. I would like to update the software, probably stick to official firmware to ensure maximum compatibility for the apps i am trying to develop.
So my question is how do I go about updating without losing any of my data? I am willing to unroot if necessary.
Thanks in advancve

Hey guys complete amateur at this and couldn't find a clear answer for the issue I'm having. I have an unrooted Galaxy S2, in Sri Lanka.
I believe that my carrier doesn't allow us to get OTA updates as I'm currently on 2.3.3. I've heard that there have been a few more updates since. Was just wondering would it be possible to root the phone and then upgrade to the latest Samsung firmware without installing any ROMs? Just want to break the carriers hold to receive OTA updates from Samsung is all I'm looking for? Is this possible? If it is could someone please point me in the right direction, would be much appreciated. Thanks.
You can install latest firmware without the need of rooting, just grab the orginal firmware (samfirmware.com) and flash it with odin.

Flashing orginal firmware via odin dosnt ask root, and dosnt void your warranty.
Thanks, sounds like the perfect solution!
I just got my Galaxy last week.
I see it is firmware 2.3.4
Has AT&T offered/sent the 2.3.5 update? If so, how do I get it? I have not seen any notification on my phone about it.
Also, I rooted my phone.
When I get the 2.3.5 update will my phone still be rooted after if I install 2.3.5 from AT&T?
Is it possible to update through Kies Mini? That is what I used for my Samsung Vibrant T959. But kies does not seem able to connnect to my AT&T galaxy s ii SGH-I777
OR do I need to root it again?
2.3.5 has not been officially announced.
the main reason for the update is the fix for the lock bug.
the 2.3.5 that is available im not sure if its leaked or user developed but its not Official.
Perception ROM is your best bet at the moment.

to my knowledge it is the only rom thats based off 2.3.5 and of course, like every other rom its rooted=)
I think we'll see more 4.0 roms sooner than we will any 2.3.5's if you want a higher os then flash CM7 and have 2.3.7

AFAIK the software update from samsung is for Jellybean v4.1.2.
Any OTA update will unroot ur phone for sure
PS- and do keep in mind not to create multiple threads for each of ur issue, rather update the same thread
Hey guys,
So I really want to upgrade my Rogers Samsung Galaxy Note II (SGH-i317M) to JB 4.3. I currently have JB 4.1.2. BUT, I'm currently rooted. I have used Framaroot to root my device and it's worked! When I get 4.3, I don't care if I have my data or not or if I'm rooted or not...
So my question is: Can I update through Kies? Will it brick?!
I'm pretty sure (and it is the case with my Galaxy SII) that Kies does not work with rooted phones. You may be able to unroot, update, then re-root.
Hello!
You may think this is a newbie question but I haven't found an clear answer to my question:
My gf has an locked Samsung SII Plus - I9105p (locked on Orange - Romania), curently running on Android 4.1.2. It runs very slow so I want to update it to some 4.4.2 found on the internet. Can I do this without sim unlocking the phone, is it gonna work?
*note: the 4.4.2 i'm talking about is not an official Orange - Romania OS. Kies tells me there is no newer version for this phone. Truth is that I heard the Orange team here in my country is very low on human resources so they didn't bother releasing anything new for this phone, and I don't blame them.
Thanks in advance!
Yes, you can update it. I am also using an i9105p locked on orange Romania and i've installed any version of android from 4.1.2 to 5.0.2
